My wife and I just returned from 15 glorius days in Israel and agree with Mr. Fletcher entirely. We literally went from Dan to Beersheba by way of Eilat thereby traversing all of the various climates, cultures and religions that Israel has to offer. Our constant comment was "Wow, look what they have done in 60 relatively short years". And while there were certainly constant reminders of the conflict that remains, there were also constant reminders of how the majority of the populace live together in harmony and respect of each other's "space" even where there are deep cultural and religious divides. Now, if the rest of the world would resist interference and let them settle their own differences, peace in Israel would probably stand a chance. Here's to praying for peace!!

I can hardly wait to go back and see all that Israel has to offer, including the danger. A week after the last time I left, a suicide bomber blew up the central market in Jerusalem. Just a week earlier I was walking through that very same market with my fellow olympians at the Maccabiad... It was great to be in a place where one didn't have to hide their religion and be free of negative remarks and prejudice. I lived the first 18 years of my life hiding my identity in an anti-semitic country, and the visit to Israel freed up my inner strength and determination to make the change. The Muslims did not live in Palestine 2500 years ago. Islam is only 1,000 years old. The jews lived in "Israel" until the Muslim hoards (Salledin) attacked from the East and conquered the area. They settled in palestine but the arabs who lived there ran away to jordan and arab countries. they were going to unite and put the jews on the march again. It did not happen.But the arabs did not give up. They were ready to live lives of hoodlums just to accomplish what they wanted to do. The jews wanted peace and gave gaza back. What is happening there. A group of arabs relentlessely bent on destroying the jewish lives who live near that border. Again the arabs want the marches to begin. Yes Jews are on the march. But now jews coming out of those camps in europe where a secret door and tunnel opened up for the jews are on the march. Time will tell where jews will march. But today in Israel the march is uphill - the hill that moshiach, the jewish moshiach will tell the world where to march and when.

We are going to Israel next week. This is my fifth visit. I have no family in Israel :-(. As a Jewish refugee from the USSR living in Boston, I have a great respect for Israel and the US. If I was treated by the above the way Arabs treat their people I would have no respect for them. Instead, the moment I stepped from a train in Austria on my way to the US I was helped and cared by strangers and goverments. If we want peace in the Middle East Arabs should learn about helping others from the US and Israel. I am pessimistic regarding this, so I am for STRONG Israel and peace through strength.

I disagree with Martin Fletcher's use of the security fence as a symbol of the negative side of Israeli independence. Comments about Israelis "stealing" Palestinian land are based on the false premise that there were no Jews in Palestine before Israel was created. This is simply not the case. In fact, the population was almost 40% Jewish and 60% Arad in the time of WWI (that's right -- one, not two).

And the impetus to divide the land between Jews and Arabs started at the end of WWI and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Britain was then given The Palestine Mandate until a resolution could be made so that the land could be evenly divided. At this point, by the way, we're talking of "Palestine" at c.1920, which included both modern-day Israel, the West Bank, Gaze, AND the whole country of JORDAN! However, to reward Emir Abdullah for the efforts and assistance of his Bedouin Army in helping to combat the Ottomans, Britain illegally and without legal right, since it was only serving as a UN mandatory and not a post-war conqueror, simply "gave" Jordan to the Emir c.1922.

Following this, the Jews were asked to divide the "remaining land," which at that point was already <50% of what the old Palestine was. In three successive UN plans recommended by The Peel Commission, beginning in 1937, each of which gradually allocated a lesser amount of land for the Jews, the UN attempted to partition the land. The Jews accepted each of such 3 proposals, the last of which gave them the least amount of land and was to serve as Israel's borders once the British Mandate ended (i.e., when Britain removed their troops). That day was May 14, 1948.

Within 8 hours, the new state of Israel was invaded by 8 aggressor Arab armies, but miraculously fought and ultimately won (without any US involvement by the way) in that an armistice was signed in 1949. Armistice does not mean "recognized borders," only that the "fighting will end." Basically, the Arabs lost but wanted the land back anyway, even though they started the war.

Anyone who says that the Jews "stole" the land is simply misinformed and buys into the propoganda spewed by linking the Holocaust to Israel's connection. The Holocaust only created the *political will* to end the Mandate. Their was a huge Jewish population dating back decades before even WWI, and the new Jewish population emigrated to lands that had been allocated to Jews.

The first two comments have many falsities in them. Israelis/Jews never stole land from anyone. They bought land legally from Arabs for centuries leading up to its declaration of independence. In 1948 Arab leadership told the Palestinians to leave because they were going to "drive the Jews into the sea." Also, Islam has only been around since the 7th century so it isn't possible for Muslims to have inhabited the land for '2500 years' as 'whatever' from PA indicated. That being said, I am disturbed that the Olmert government has not seized the opportunity to disengage from the West Bank in coordination with Mahmoud Abbas' moderate government. If Sharon were still in power he would have made an agreement by now. Whenever we hear BS like "palestinians muslims have been living for over 2500 years" it's important to remember where the world "Palestine" comes from...

The term originated with the word "Plesheth" which was the name of a group of GREEK settlers. These would become known as the "Philistines" in later years ( and as recorded in the bible ).

From the fifth century the Greeks called the area "the Philistine Syria." After the Jewish revolt in 135 AD Roman emporer Hadrian renamed the area "Provincia Syria Palaestina" in an attempt to blot out the Jewish identity of the region. This was later renamed to simply "Palaestina" by the Romans, and then converted to the more English name of "Palestine" as Britain gained influence.

So, in short.. this "Ancient" Arabic homeland is named after the British mispronunciation of a Roman name for a Greek people. Incidentally, 2500 years ago the territory would have been known as Judea.

It is unfortunate that many Americans believe the Arab rhetoric - in 1947, the Jews accepted the UN resolution that essentially split Israel (and parts of western Jordan and easter Egypt) into 2 states - and Arab State and a Jewish State. The Arabs living in the area along with all of the neighboring Arab nations declared war on the Jewish people. The Jews, using ingineuity and their own home-made weaponry, defeated the professional Arab armies and created a country out of the desert that is more esteemed than every one of their neighbors (i.e. compare the number of Arab nobel prize winners to the number of Israeli winners - and remember that Israel is 1/100th in population and size of those states).

How 'bout this - Israel is a Democratic state (that's right - and Arab can practice Islam and work in Israel - and be FREE). Now name an Arab nation that is truly democratic and practices freedom of religion. Israel is the only country to have supported the United States's position on every UN resolution and yes - the USA supports Israel with financial and economic aid - but what nation will defend the US's interests in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia - no, Yemen - no, Jordan - no, the United Arab Emerites - come on).

Hopefully the vast sentiment of Arabs around the world is not the feeling that Israel must be destroyed (personally I don't believe it is); but, we must not believe the Arab propoganda that makes Israel look like a "bully" - Israel has been victimized by Arab terrorists that are affiliated with Hamas, the PLO, Iran, Syria, Al Queda - Israel has a right to defend itself, including aggressive offensives (as with bombing a station in Syria that was being developed as a nuclear reactor) because just remember this - if they don't do it, and they are destroyed, the USA will have to do it alone.

Those of my father's family who survived the holocaust live in Israel. My parents were sponsored by a cousin in Minnesota and we came to the US. I love America and have had the good fortune to visit Israel and love the land. Having family in the land adds to my experience. I have had the priviledge to listen to Martin Fletcher for years. I loved this article. It has truth. If Palestinian children were taught to love and understand the Jewish land instead of hate, peace may have a chance. As long as the message to the children is hate and martyrdom, the future of peace is a dream.

What we tend to forget is that the conflict between Jews and Muslims has been going on for centuries, with no resolution. They are half-brothers by lineage, and fight as mortal enemies on a continual basis with no purpose other than senseless hatred very similar to Hitler-type aggression, with blame resting on both sides. We as the US are negligent in establishing and supporting the state of Israel except for its use as a buffer against the prejudice and hatred of its Arab / Muslim neighbors. It is a good strategic move to maintain a strong military there, but it also begs the question: Would we (US) see as much hatred from Muslims had we not supported the stealing of land to create anew the state of Israel in 1948? At this stage in world history, neither side has much merit. We, as a PC nation, no longer have a firm grasp on the realities and impacts of such action, and it is best we abstain from interfering in the juvenile actions of people who have not advanced sociologically since the BC to AD conversion.

When talking about displacement, one should remember that it was the Arabs who told the Palestinian Arabs to leave the mandated area, that once the Palestinian Jews were "pushed into the sea," they'd be able to return to their homes victorious. This didn't happen, and the Palestinian Arabs have been kept in the squalor of the camps ever since. If the Arab countries really wanted to do some good, they'd: 1) recognize Israel's right to exist; 2) let Israel live in peace amongst the nations there; and 3) absorb the Arabs into their countries.

Also, consider this: Israel is the ONLY country in the world that has been forced to give back land gained in war against its enemies.

I never realized that Islam was 500 years older than Christianity...get your facts straight "Whatever" from PA.
The other fact to understand is that the Palestinians have had many chances for statehood, including in 1947 when the UN granted the west bank of the Jordan River for Israel and the east bank of the Jordan River for Palestine. The Jews accepted the offer and the Arab World rejected the offer. Those Arabs that remained in Israel were granted citizenship; those that left became refugees in the Arab World - no Arab country wanted them - not Egypt, not Saudi Arabia, not Iran, not Lebanon, not Syria.....
Israel has a history of working to achieve peace with its neighbors - Israel and Egypt have had peace for 30 years and Israel and Jordan have peace on their border.
What have the Palestinians done to achieve peace? Absolutely nothing!
Israel is a wonderful country as Mr. Fletcher explained. Everyone should visit to have a better understanding of what is real and what is created for the media. I've been to Israel 10 times and look forward to going again in the near future!

It's unfortunate that so many of you commenters who state Israel's horrible treatment of the displaced Palestinians, have learned their history from the media. The fact that Arab govts. such as Syria and Jordan asked the Palestinians to leave "temporarily" so they could attack the newly formed Israel and give the Palestinians their homes back after Israel is destroyed is never mentioned. The fact that while Jordan controlled most of the West Bank from '48-'67 and the Palestinians had no voting rights and already lived in refugee camps well before Israel took over the West Bank is never mentioned. The fact that there were no "Palestinians" as a people until the mid-1900's when the name became popular from a terrorist organization. And on and on....I am not saying Israel is compeltely blameless in this mess, but I am saying that we should all learn our history before stating facts that simply aren't so black and white.

Now for a history lesson for the vast majority of you. In the Christian calendar it is 2008; in the Jewish calendar its 5768. Islam has been around for about 1400 years. Until 1948 there was never a muslim or arab nation known as Palestine. Throughout the entire history of the world there has never been an Arab nation nor a muslim nation with Jerusalem as its' capitol. Israel and Palestine were created in 1948, in response to the fact the 2 ppls were unable to live together for a 30 year "trial" period following the demise of the Ottoman empire which has ruled the entire area for 400+ years. This 30 year period included such "niceties" such as the Arabs massacring the Jewish population of Hebron in 1929. The Jews, once WW 2 ended flooded the area and started buying up land. Not stealing, but buying it. After 1948 Israel accepted partition. The Palestinians and the Arab world chose war and lost. Part of palestine became Israeli. The west bank became part of Jordan and Gaza became Egyptian. For 19 years we heard nothing about a Palestinian state, just more attempts to eradicate Israel. Once Egypt and Jordan lost these lands when they lost another war in 1967 did the Palestinians as a people become an issue. I guess being ruled by other Muslims who brutalize you is fine. More attempts to eradicate Israel including the despicable Yom Kippur war of 1973. Imagine America nuked on Christmas Eve. It was only then that worldwide concern (laughale term) about the palestinians took hold. Of course this feeling is most strongly felt in Muslim lands where it is based on religious bigotry and in Europe where anti-semitism oils below the surface daily. There we have it. The Palestinians are where they are because of who they are. When they accept the blame, everyone can move forward. They won't though. The fact is that all holocaust survivors were handsomely compensated , they brought their money and prospered in America, the ones who lived in the ghettos in USSR were moved into readly furnished Palestinian homes or newly built state homes in new settlements built on confiscated palestinian land, no one can refute these fact, while these settlers were moved again, they were handsomely compensated with our tax dollars ( $300,000 - $350,00 ) just to be moved on
to better yet new settlements around Jerusalem again built on confiscated Palestinain land. If Israel denies the right of the 4.5 million Palestinians to their homes then we may want to realistically offer them a very handsome monetary compensation, but no we only believe in raiding , killing, and lies. America did not return the Indians to their kland but they appologized to them and compensated them. What goes around comes around, the Europeans still do not favor the idea of returning Jews amongst them, they donate money to keep them at arms end. America has established a well fortified colony where they can intice the Israeli to keep buying and stashing weapons for their own security. The truth is the relationship beween the two countries is parasitic, one feeds on the other, it is in the best interest of America the drums of war continue. The champions of freedom & democracy fogot to look at themselves in the mirror and see the hypocrisy of their slogans. Peace can be achieved, but only if we admit the right for the Palestinians to live in peace and prsperity like the rest of the nations, justice for all, not one side over the other. The establishment of Israel sadly lead to a system of apartheid that no human being with any decency and understanding of human rights and equality we accept. Israel is buying time as long as America is nodding. America polices the world on human rights and forgets to look at itself. One thing the whole world needs to understand that the Palestinians will never go away, it is their right to live in peace and dignity. For all of pontifs and champions of Israel, just look at S. Africa and Northern Ireland , then and only then you will begin to see how this story of human misery will end, sooner or later this system must collapse if not from the outside it will be from inside. Your opinions will not change the stark truth about the real victims and the raiders who were once victims of European hatred.

It is a shame they forgot. The Palestinians are trapped in the same predicamnet yet they are looked on as terrorists when they fight tanks with stones and want their homes and land and businesses (yes many Arabs and Christians had thriving businesses and lives that were shattered and taken by force )
The Jews have suffered as much from others hands over the years as much as their own doing and the whole thing makes me sad.

I do not understand why so many seem to have a problem with a JEWISH state but do not condemn other nations for being ISLAMIC. All the Israelis want is to be able to live in peace. Many speak of historic ties to this land from one group or another but who holds title due to what obscure lineage to this very small area of land. After WWII the area that is now called the west bank was known as the wilderness because it was so lightly populated. The population that did exist there was 60% Arab and 40% Jewish. That did not make it acceptable for the Arabs to refuse recognition of the new Jewish state and declare war in 1948.
If the Arabs on the west bank devoted their energies to earning a living and supporting their families they would be way ahead of where they are now.
