Islam is only 1,000 years old. The jews lived in "Israel" until the Muslim hoards (Salledin) attacked from the East and conquered the area. It briefly changed hands to Christians during the Crusades and then back to Muslim rule again. So the Palestinians are not the original occupants of the area, the jews were. So I have no problem with the jews getting their ancient land back that the muslims stole from them 1,000 years ago. First the jews were enslaved by Egypt, then the Romans, then the Nazi Germans. Do you blame them for not wanting to be enslaved by the Arabs?

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

let us review the spanish expulsion of jews from spaim in 1492. Than the portugal expulsion. Than the russian expulsions and finally in 1939 the final european expulsion to auschwitz, treblinka, bergen belsen, dachau et al.
In 1492 jews in spain were told to accept the christian way of "life". They were not offered "life" but the jew in spain resisted the christian way and accepted the "jewish Way".Spanish Jews were told to leave spain without money property. They were escorted to the borders of course fully protected that no mobs would attack them? Read the articles on this chapter. Imagine marching from central spain to the border with your wife and infant babies in their arms without legal protection or any citizenship protection. Take a look at the next chapters and look at the most recent chapter. Well europeans finally thought hitler solved the world problem. Jews were again on the march. This time it looked like jews were marching to the end. But behold there were back doors to those ovens and they led to "palestine". Jewish people yearned for their "home" where they could be Jewish and not be marched around by any one else. They settled in palestine but the arabs who lived there ran away to jordan and arab countries. they were going to unite and put the jews on the march again. It did not happen. But the arabs did not give up. They were ready to live lives of hoodlums just to accomplish what they wanted to do. The jews wanted peace and gave gaza back. What is happening there. A group of arabs relentlessely bent on destroying the jewish lives who live near that border. Again the arabs want the marches to begin. Yes Jews are on the march. But now jews coming out of those camps in europe where a secret door and tunnel opened up for the jews are on the march. Time will tell where jews will march. But today in Israel the march is uphill - the hill that moshiach, the jewish moshiach will tell the world where to march and when.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

We are going to Israel next week. This is my fifth visit. I have no family in Israel :-(. As a Jewish refugee from the USSR living in Boston, I have a great respect for Israel and the US. If I was treated by the above the way Arabs treat their people I would have no respect for them. Instead, the moment I stepped from a train in Austria on my way to the US I was helped and cared by strangers and goverments. If we want peace in the Middle East Arabs should learn about helping others from the US and Israel. I am pessimistic regarding this, so I am for STRONG Israel and peace through strength.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

That "miracle" in 60 years, with nuclear power and the most advanced science, comes from hard discipline and loyalty to Israel. This is simply not the case. In fact, the population was almost 40% Jewish and 60% Arad in the time of WWI (that's right -- one, not two).

And the impetus to divide the land between Jews and Arabs started at the end of WWI and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Britain was then given The Palestine Mandate until a resolution could be made so that the land could be evenly divided. At this point, by the way, we're talking of "Palestine" at c.1920, which included both modern-day Israel, the West Bank, Gaze, AND the whole country of JORDAN! However, to reward Emir Abdullah for the efforts and assistance of his Bedouin Army in helping to combat the Ottomans, Britain illegally and without legal right, since it was only serving as a UN mandatory and not a post-war conqueror, simply "gave" Jordan to the Emir c.1922.

Following this, the Jews were asked to divide the "remaining land," which at that point was already <50% of what the old Palestine was. In three successive UN plans recommended by The Peel Commission, beginning in 1937, each of which gradually allocated a lesser amount of land for the Jews, the UN attempted to partition the land. The Jews accepted each of such 3 proposals, the last of which gave them the least amount of land and was to serve as Israel's borders once the British Mandate ended (i.e., when Britain removed their troops). That day was May 14, 1948.

Within 8 hours, the new state of Israel was invaded by 8 aggressor Arab armies, but miraculously fought and ultimately won (without any US involvement by the way) in that an armistice was signed in 1949. Armistice does not mean "recognized borders," only that the "fighting will end." Basically, the Arabs lost but wanted the land back anyway, even though they started the war.

Anyone who says that the Jews "stole" the land is simply misinformed and buys into the propoganda spewed by linking the Holocaust to Israel's connection. The Holocaust only created the *political will* to end the Mandate. Their was a huge Jewish population dating back decades before even WWI, and the new Jewish population emigrated to lands that had been allocated to Jews.

Don't believe me? Google it. Search for "Balfour Declaration," "Sykes-Picot Agreement," "Palestine Mandate," "Peel Commission," etc.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

The first two comments have many falsities in them. Israelis/Jews never stole land from anyone. They bought land legally from Arabs for centuries leading up to its declaration of independence. In 1948 Arab leadership told the Palestinians to leave because they were going to "drive the Jews into the sea." Also, Islam has only been around since the 7th century so it isn't possible for Muslims to have inhabited the land for '2500 years' as 'whatever' from PA indicated. On the contrary, it is the year 5768 for the Jewish calendar.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

israel deresves this land,Jews were fro mthe begining. And, Whatever, (PA), your comment that Jews deserved hate in Eurpope and the Middle East is terrible. Jews got hated in Europe because they were scapogoated for economic and social downtimes there like in the Holocaust. So that is extremeley rude to say Jews deserved hate because your saying it's ok for them to be hated and then killed for things that they did not to do but were blamed for. It seems Whatever,(PA), is a neo nazis or supporting them(which is just as bad). The reason Jews are hated in the Middle East because they give women rights', civil rights, let people practice their own religon, and are the only true democracy in the Middle Eaet. They are mad because Jews are nice to their peopole and they and the rest of Middle East nations are mean and oppressive to their people. That is no reason to be be mean to Jews because Jews are righteous and fair people. The fact that Arab govts. such as Syria and Jordan asked the Palestinians to leave "temporarily" so they could attack the newly formed Israel and give the Palestinians their homes back after Israel is destroyed is never mentioned. The fact that while Jordan controlled most of the West Bank from '48-'67 and the Palestinians had no voting rights and already lived in refugee camps well before Israel took over the West Bank is never mentioned. The fact that there were no "Palestinians" as a people until the mid-1900's when the name became popular from a terrorist organization. And on and on....I am not saying Israel is compeltely blameless in this mess, but I am saying that we should all learn our history before stating facts that simply aren't so black and white.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

You what you guys need to do your research correctly my friend. JEWS [HEBREWS] have been there far longer than their enemies who claim they stole their land?
Anyone who cares to review or learn known history would know TRUTH- the facts though for some unknown agenda are constantly confused and distorted. Not one JEW in all history has nor would ever blow themselves up in pursuit of their ignorance. They have however cured diseases and made contributions to education, business, science, history, medicine, arts, etc.,etc, well beyond any other and all groups of people that have saved millions of lives. Why is it out of the billions of people on this earth that these 12 million-a fraction of the earth's population that these people are so special or such a concern?
It is good they may enjoy their existance and for the good of all mankind, pray may they always..........
The light of these people illuminates across the entire world. Leave them a days peace-they have earned it.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

It seems that few of the above know who the palestines are. And, indeed, when they were offered soverign control over more than 50% of 1947 Palestine and over approximately 85% of 1920 Palestine, they rejected the offers and repeatedly went to war to prevent any exercise of Jewish sovereignty. That notwithstanding that Jews formed the majority of the population in the areas which had been awarded to them by the UN, and had formed a majority of the population in Jerusalem since the 1800s, which was not awarded to either Jews or Palestinians by the UN and which is the so-called "Palestinian downtown" shown in the photograph. That the Palestinians lost the murderous wars which they began in 1920, 1929, 1936 and 1947 is no cause for grief. They had been Nazi allies during World War II, continued the fight after the fascists were beaten, and deservedly suffered the same fate. If they continue to suffer, perhaps because unlike Germany, Italy, Japan and their allies, the Palestinians never renounced fascism or race hatred or despotism, and have either continued to practice it themselves or have permitted their leaders to continue to practice forms of it in their name.
The homes and areas shown in the photograph are in one piece, well fed, and thriving, despite Palestinian suicide attacks, school bombings, and anti-Jewish murders. Why,ny would not acknowledge that, even if s/he knew it, because facts clearly are not part of his/her analysis.
Perhaps why, ny should consider the consequences to the people whose stolen land s/he lives upon and should try to help those victims, rather than condemning the Jewish victims who successfully reestablished their lives in their own land. No meaningful offer of sovereignty was extended to the native peoples who had lived on the land under why,ny's feet.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

Anonymous. What the hell have you been doing for thirty years, sleeping?

The place is as undemocratic as any third world nation. What you call parties have always been under the control of several key individuals. Politics, even by Israelis themselves, is so predictable that they are staying away from the polls in droves.

Warlike is a way to describe Israel. They havent learned a thing about how they persecute, discriminate and generally ignore their own 1.5 million Arab 'citizens.'

ANd if they really wanted to exist and live in peace with their neighbors they would sit down today and start holding discussions with Hamas, Syria and other neighbors. Returning to the pre-67 borders is what a majority of Israeli citizens have been asking for, so what prevents this socalled democracy from listening to its own citizens?

As for US support, that is going to evaporate sooner than later with the recalcitrance of guys like Olmert, and Netanyahu.

What a mess is this beacon of democracy in the middle east. They are Jews. The original religion of all the world. A small cross section of secular Muslims are the ones who use ignorance and brute force to try and get their way. There isn't any such thing to them as diplomacy. The radical factions of Muslims won't be persuaded by anyone and that is the reason the PLO didn't and doesn't work. It is a ragtag outfit of militants. Why should Israel just give it back? They lost thousands to rescue it from people who wouldn't have taken care of it and preserved it for what it was anyway. The 6 Day War-where every Arab nation fought Israel-AND LOST. Israel is the land of peace regardless of what insane people try and try again to ruin. Drive through the Arab towns in Israel and examine how they are cared for. I drove to the Cave of Machpela with my father and hundreds of Arab children threw rocks at our car. When the seeds of Arabs and Muslims are poisoned, you can forget about peace in Israel.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

how would you live if you had country after country since your inception trying to destroy you for apparently no reason! i know most of you don't read the bible, but Hagars son has always been trying to destroy brother Isaac.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

To all of my Palestinians friends. Here's the formula: Compromise. You could have had a Palestinian State by now, but you prefer to keep on trying to "drawn the Jews in the sea". So, now you have a fight on your hands. And guess what, you are on the losing end. Get your dictators out of office, and let the people shake hands and make peace. It's called: "Give and Take". TAKE a Palestinian state, GIVE peace a chance.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

Prior to 1948 the whole territory was sparsely populated and had no commercial value. It's been sixty years since the world turned its back on the Palestinians and allowed the Jews to militarily take the land from the arabs.

I've been to Israel, and for that matter most of the countries bordering the Med (save Libya), and cannot think of anything memorable there except for seeing how the Jews treat the Arabs. And by the way... they (IDF) took my camera for taking pictures of a check-point. How's that for America's closest ally.

Don't forget these are the people who spy on us daily, sold our nuclear secrets to the Russians, attacked one of our naval vessels (since covered up) and drain our treasury on a yearly basis.

The peace talks and "Land for peace" is all a smoke screen. The Jews will never give back the land they have taken (all by force) and if the world would only close its eyes and ears too they would evict the arabs for good.

And our government supports this country?

I always wondered why the Holocaust museum is on our national mall.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

Israel is a joke. 60 years old. Land stolen from one people and given to another. Sounds so American. Why is it ok for israel to persecute, maim and kill Palestinians and the world looks away. Palestinians retalite with crude means(suicide bombers)and the world reacts with horror and this trumped up war on terror. It really is just another Christian crusade. America supports Israel only because Israel provides us a base in the war on Islam, not because we feel bad. It's to our advantage. People cried, rejoiced and felt relief when the Berlin Wall came down. When will we at least acknowledge the walls Israel built to oppress a people, who were wrongfully displaced?

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

As a history scholar, I find it hard to defend the actions that created this state. This is a spirtual home to 3 religions, yet the territory is awarded to only one of these?

In a perfect world, the territory in and around the Holy City should be an open forum for all pilgrams of all 3 different religions can visit and practice their faith peacefully.

Since we are living in an imperfect world, Isreal is the imperfection we have.

This state of Isreal is NOT the long term fix for the enormous problem that lies in Jerusalem. There is nothing in history that people take more seriously than religion.
Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

Unless both sides make significant concessions this conflict will never go away. Yes, the Muslims were in the region for 2,500 years. At the time the land which Israel sits on was part of the Ottoman Empire. There was no Palestine, there was no Jordan. Centers of hi-tech and innovation alongside the greatest biblical scholars in the world, a powerful military force pitted daily against home-made rockets, a vibrant economy with one of the world’s strongest currencies and one of the greatest gaps between rich and poor in the developed world."
Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

GOD BLESS ISRAEL! In the Christian calendar it is 2008; in the Jewish calendar its 5768. Islam has been around for about 1400 years. Until 1948 there was never a muslim or arab nation known as Palestine. Throughout the entire history of the world there has never been an Arab nation nor a muslim nation with Jerusalem as its' capitol. Israel and Palestine were created in 1948, in response to the fact the 2 ppls were unable to live together for a 30 year "trial" period following the demise of the Ottoman empire which has ruled the entire area for 400+ years. This 30 year period included such "niceties" such as the Arabs massacring the Jewish population of Hebron in 1929. The Jews, once WW 2 ended flooded the area and started buying up land. Not stealing, but buying it. After 1948 Israel accepted partition. The Palestinians and the Arab world chose war and lost. Part of palestine became Israeli. The west bank became part of Jordan and Gaza became Egyptian. For 19 years we heard nothing about a Palestinian state, just more attempts to eradicate Israel. Once Egypt and Jordan lost these lands when they lost another war in 1967 did the Palestinians as a people become an issue. I guess being ruled by other Muslims who brutalize you is fine. More attempts to eradicate Israel including the despicable Yom Kippur war of 1973. Imagine America nuked on Christmas Eve. It was only then that worldwide concern (laughale term) about the palestinians took hold. Of course this feeling is most strongly felt in Muslim lands where it is based on religious bigotry and in Europe where anti-semitism oils below the surface daily. There we have it. The Palestinians are where they are because of who they are. When they accept the blame, everyone can move forward. They won't though. They are merely a pawn in the coming war of Islam vs. what remains of the west. Happy Birthday Israel. Shame on you Palestine.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

I think that these pictures are just hogwash. How come the pictures of the Israeli soldiers holding guns up to small muslim children aren't involved in that group of photos? I am an American and I don't think we should be sending "aid" and helping the Israelis kill Palestinians. And really, all these people wonder why the Muslims hate us. Why do you really think? Is it because we support muslim genocide? Or that we have occupied the middle east for 60 some years now? Is it because we take their oil and land? Is it because we destroy homes, families, values, and religion over there? No, it is because we are rich and free right? Geeze, numb and dumb, I'll tell you. Most of these pictures are so BIAS, it could make me sick. If Israel denies the right of the 4.5 million Palestinians to their homes then we may want to realistically offer them a very handsome monetary compensation, but no we only believe in raiding , killing, and lies. America did not return the Indians to their kland but they appologized to them and compensated them. What goes around comes around, the Europeans still do not favor the idea of returning Jews amongst them, they donate money to keep them at arms end. America has established a well fortified colony where they can intice the Israeli to keep buying and stashing weapons for their own security. The truth is the relationship beween the two countries is parasitic, one feeds on the other, it is in the best interest of America the drums of war continue. The champions of freedom & democracy fogot to look at themselves in the mirror and see the hypocrisy of their slogans. Peace can be achieved, but only if we admit the right for the Palestinians to live in peace and prsperity like the rest of the nations, justice for all, not one side over the other. The establishment of Israel sadly lead to a system of apartheid that no human being with any decency and understanding of human rights and equality we accept. Israel is buying time as long as America is nodding. America polices the world on human rights and forgets to look at itself. One thing the whole world needs to understand that the Palestinians will never go away, it is their right to live in peace and dignity. For all of pontifs and champions of Israel, just look at S. Africa and Northern Ireland , then and only then you will begin to see how this story of human misery will end, sooner or later this system must collapse if not from the outside it will be from inside. Your opinions will not change the stark truth about the real victims and the raiders who were once victims of European hatred.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

It has been from the past,it is now, and it will be that Israel are the chosen nation of God.Both the bible and the Quran testify to these. It is therefore extremism for a group of people to want to annihilate that particular nation. It has not succeded and in the past, nor will it succeed now.The major problem with we humans is that we fail to accept what God has put in place, and we get punished not not accepting it.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

Mr. L Larsen from Phoenix, AZ. It seems to me that the Arab world wants to the Jews to be gone no matter what the means. Sadly this will go on until the end of time. Jews around the world need to raise their hands and signify the right to live in peace.

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

The Jewish people are only defending what is rightfully theirs. However, if you do not believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God then you will have a hard time with the previous statement. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.....Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the Life and no one comes to the Father except by Me." That is not narrow-mindedness....it's mercy. God wanted to be extremely clear on how to get to Heaven so He made One way!

Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

While reading these comments here what is amazing: people with common sense and intelligence are constantly trying to educate the ignorant masses of anti semites...
