My guess is that most of the information given to the interviewers was well calculated to present a postion of growing strength. It reminds me of Che Gueverra before he was tracked down by government forces and killed. I just listened to Robert McNamara story about lessons on vietnam on books on tape...The lesson of this war is that it could not be won in the air, only on the ground and only with a stable government. The Russians tried to win in the air by bombing out this country. The only way to take out the key leaders of the Tailiban is on the ground and setting up bases right in the mountains..No one has ever tamed this area of the world..The british fought and lost 5 wars in this region.Like in vietnam and laos, the enemy can withstand large amounts of bombing, with no effect on either the supply routes or military operations..This is what MacNamara wrote in his book...Strange, alot of people who lost friends in Vietnam hate the book by MacNamara but they have never read the book.. Some of the things I read about people's attitudes towards out military actions amaze me. People act like we were minding our own business and then attacked on 9/11. America has been telling other people and countries how to act so we can keep the oil coming cheap and easy. Why have we not invaded Saudi Arabia where most radical schools are setup, etc? I cannot be but surprised at the way the Taliban will portray their efforts as being just and noble because the US has bombed places where non-combatants have been injured, or killed. It has to make one wonder where those suicide bombers that blowup markets and buses with non-combatants being the targets come from. The Taliban claim that they are doing the will of Allah, yet according to the Koran, no Moslem is supposed to harm another. Yet, these very self-proclaimed servants of Allah, would repress there own people to prevent them from learning that a government of the people and by the people, is not just composed of religious fanatics that use that control to further their own and not Allah's ends. The article mentioned how women are willing to sacrifice themselves as martyrs as well, but it fails to mention that in most cases they are either coerced, or paid to become suicide bombers. The problems created here are called ones of religious persecution by Christians of Moslems, yet it is these very same Moslems that are using their religion as an excuse to harm those that are not a threat, simply as a means toward instilling fear and horror in people. The Taliban are not about religion, they are about power, it is not enough for westerners to be accepting and tolerant of other religions, they must bow down, convert to Islam and let people like the Taliban dictate their lives to serve those in power. Faqir states that all Moslems should unite to remove all foreigners from their borders, yet he failed to mention how the Sunni's and Shiites would willingly kill each other over religious differences. The only justice that people like Faqir understand comes out of the end of a gun, so lets help him out by letting him stand in front of one. One last thing, when is it that the Faqirs of the world are willing to strap on a bomb and blow themselves up, it is only the fanatic, or ignorant that are talked into it, not the Faqir's of the world.

After 9/11, the U.S. Special Forces, etc and the Afgan's Northern Liberation Army quickly kicked out the Taliban. We had the opportunity to build up the country and quickly train a well equipped national army and set up a MAG team (military adveriser Group)
and with the building up of their intrastructors, roads, etc and factories from the international community we could have made Afganistan a real window of opportunities for that region of the world. But no, old Bush had to derail the who process and go into Iraq and spend a trillion dollars there for no good cause. Now, we have to do Afganistan all over again and it might not work this time around.

The problem is that to wage a war the way we did in the 1940's would require the entire country to shift gears: factories retooled for war-production, large changes in economic policy to support such an effort, and the possible institution of a military draft (which would be political suicide in modern politics).

Indiscriminate bombing (i.e. carpet bombing) doesn't really achieve any military objective. Even during WWII, the carpet bombing of Dresden achieved almost nothing militarily. The Army Air Corps (later renamed the Air Force) realized this and soon after resolved to stop the practice and concentrate on Germany's industrial capacity; correctly realizing that no matter how many soldiers the enemy had, without the necessary supplies, their army would grind to a halt. We have to shift our focus from killing the teenagers and guys in their 20's; no matter how many you take out, there will be 2 more to replace them. We have to going after the root of their supply networks, wherever they may be. That's the real problem. The supplies (both in men and material) are coming from outside the current theater's of operation...

What I always say is, do your homework, then try to make intelligent assessments based on reality. What is the history of the Europeans/Russians in that part of the world? Have we meant those people well? Did we try and take their resources by force? Why were the British/French/Russians in the Middle East, and Central Asia, in the first place many years ago? Do you know that the Euros created many of the "countries" in the Mid East, arbitrarily creating nation states such as Iraq, which had been tribally oriented for many thousands of years? And, the same in Africa...many of the countries there were created by Europeans, and not with the best interests of the African people in mind.
Many Americans, unfortunately, talk/think in simplistic slogans, rather than doing the hard work or reading and studying to see what's really going on around the world. America has long supported and created very nasty dictatorships all over the world, mostly in the service of American business interests...again, this is all historical fact, and you can read many books on the subject. I am not a fan of the Taliban, and I do not wish to live under Islamic law...nor am I looking forward to seeing a nuke go off in America. So basically we are not harboring them but following our own Punstanwali code of honor.

If these Arabs are so considered to be pious in their everyday walk of life, then they should leave our country rather make our citizens shed blood only to protect these couple of handful of Arab terrorist.

First off, I love America and I am very proud of our men and women in uniform.

At this point we are faced with a problem that should have been dealt with decades ago. By us putting off the inevitable back in the late 1970's and into 80's we are now faced with a situation that has evolved into a crisis that is potentially out of control and that will involve the likes of Iran, Russia, North Korea & China all on one side.

Al Qaida, Taliban and Hezbollah are the rogue pawns being used by the likes of Iran, Russia, North Korea & China. All of this is being done to pull America into a situation that she has been trying to avoid for a couple of decades. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are unfortunate, but necessary. Better to fight there then here on our soil!

It is not a coincidence that Russia pulled out of the cold war as suddenly as they did. They have always been the smiling man that won't hesitate to stab you in the back. They are trying to pull the greatest Trojan horse.

With all of our politics both domestically and internationally we must stay the course and not worry about the political ramifications. We as Americans have a resposibility to our famalies, our country and to each other; to ensure our nation and our way of life is not compromised. War sucks, but it is necessary!

There's an intricate joining of powers by the likes of Iran, Russia, North Korea & China with the sole purpose of destroying all that we hold dear, and that is our freedom and liberties! Are we going to let them take that away from us?

We can never go back in time and undo what's already been done. What we can do, is take the cards that we dealt ourselves and make it better; by any means necessary.

After the Vietnam War, we likewise joined an economic effort to rebuild that country.

Its' success depends on the fortitude of the Western World to fail to respond. If, as most Leftist Liberals would have it, we should retreat, give up, hope they are not serious and bury our heads in the sand, then we will be speaking Arabic in twenty years. Is that what you want?

Arabs need a little extra time to understand the concepts of freedom, their religion having been subverted to Immans and Clerics of Islam, pesky dictators and demigogues.

Wow. People on here who use the "they attacked us first" line need to remember who attacked us. Was it all the rural tribes of Afganistan? Remote villagers who have been hit by Tomahawk missiles and B-52 strikes without having any knowledge of why (except for what they are told by the local gang of militants) have a damn good reason to support the guerillas, either passively or actively. Total war will not work. Unless you have a large enough force (we don't) to achieve "local superiority" in all battles while still not leaving anyplace un-controlled by friendlies (leaving the miltias no place to hide) then they will continue to dodge us and make minor attacks and meanwhile, we will continue to kill civilians and just generally piss people over there off and drive them into supporting the rebels (who are locally probably thought to be more legit than the "US backed puppet government"). A local guerilla force has NEVER lost on it's home turf when it has maintained the support of the local population. A guerilla army has NEVER been victorious without this support.
Or we could nuke 'em. Yeah, whoever said that was probably some idiot rich kid from Texas. HAHAHA, Sorry. You would have to nuke the whole country. Which I guess wouldn't be a problem if Afganistan existed on some other planet. And of course even if you magically killed every member of Al-Taleban you would have a one-hundred percent chance of a religious oriented retaliation. Which you would deserve, because you just nuked a entire country, killed who knows how many people, ruined a good portion of Asia and I am sure the world.
