The British have been in fighting there for longer than a year. The British forces and other country's forces (Danish, Canadian & Estonian)have done a stellar job fighting the Taliban. I feel that this doesn't get mentioned enough.

I hope people will be made more aware of what our troops are doing right now by the media. There has been very little mention of this on the three major networks. They seem to be too transfixed by what Hillary said about Obama and what Obama said about her. That really is soooo much more important than anything else that is going on in the world! I hope people will pray for them.
Thank you for being there and giving the troops there our suport and helping us at home to get a better perspective on the world.
I wonder what would happen if people who abuse drugs ever make the connection that the money spent on drugs helps to finance war and the worst sorts of oppression

Being a former Marine with over 25 years of active service I can tell you being on the wrong side against the Marines isn't a health thing to do. But if you want to meet your maker, the Marines will make darn sure that you get your chance to meet your God up close and very one on one . When the bullets start flying the Marines are the ones that run towards the bullets not away from them.If you value your life and want to see the next day, week or month or even next year for that matter, this isn't the time to fire on Marines because if you do, it's a one way ticket to hell.

The British invaded Afghanistan three times when they were a huge empire and superpower-they were humiliated in all three attempts. Then the Russians did the same in 1979. After 10 years of brutal occupation they suffered the same fate. The Taliban are the people and the people are the Taliban. They will always refuse to be defeated. The best thing we can do is give up our imperialistic ambitions and leave the people of Afghanistan to determine their own future. Remember, not a single one of the Sept 11 terrorists was an Afghan.

As the sibling of a Navy Corpsman serving with this group of Marines in Afghanistan (1/6 BLT; 24th MEU), I want to thank you for the detailed report/blog. My brother was part of the last deployment (Ramadi), as well. It is always "comforting" (I guess) to know what he is doing as things unfold overseas. He is happy to be serving with the Marines and has expressed the importance of their role in areas like the Helmand province. We are very proud of him and all the Marines he serves with. I hope you will continue to keep us all updated on the progress and challenges the Marines face during this deployment.

I was reading your blog post about the marines deploying in southern Afghanistan. One of the marines from the 24th MEU, BLT 1/6, charlie company, a LCpl Burrows, is my fiancee. He went to Ramadi last year, and I just thought you should have your numbers correct, BLT 1/6 spent 9 months there, not 15.
I also want to thank you for choosing to be embedded with the marines in southern afghanistan, you've helped me and my family keep some kind of tabs on what our boys are doing over there, since their use of phones and internet is limited.

Just like Nikki Knupp above, my brother is also a Navy Corpsman, 1/6 BLT 24th MEU, serving alongside the marines. I hear very little from him, so it is nice to be able to at least know what he is up to through your news reports. My nephew is a Corporal with this group of Marines and our family is extremely proud of him even though we are very nervous. All we ask is to PLEASE wait until AFTER they have surprised the Taliban and the mission has started to talk or print about it. We heard about this massive push on Sunday before they went in on Tuesday, and several of the leaders of our brave, wonderful men said it was obvious they knew they were coming and had planted bombs in response. PLEASE don't add more danger to their mission by revealing what they are doing before it starts.
