The movement for enforcement of shariah in Swat Valley was initiated by sufi Khan Mohammad who is father in law of Maulvi Fazullah. Friends, reading your opinions has been really informative. I have only a brief comment. Why is it that if the majority of us hate violence we don´t face up to it more boldly? Its because noone wants to be in the firing line, I guess. But ask yourself this, whilst the majority talks the fanatic few rule a reign of fear and that includes some of our Western leaders even though that may sound unnacceptable to some. A fundamental change to the power of our vote needs to take place. Our vote needs to count for more than one misguided decision every four to five years. We need to be very much more active during the political term. Its like we are watching TV, the only power we have is to watch or turn on or off. Nothing more. Very sad. Let´s try and change the programs if we don´t like them.

And please, let´s leave God and religion out of this. Neither God nor religion are to blame. From what I have read of the major religions none of them condone an attack though some do condone self defence which is legitimate.

The US is not bereft of blame in Afghanistan. The Taliban was CIA trained to fight the Soviets so that the US could maintain the upper hand in the Cold War. There was the promise that the US would help rebuild Afghanistan in return so that the country could recognise its growth potential. However, once the Soviets were defeated, the US packed up and left. Tanks, mines and so on were left on Afghan soil in a hurry. Afghanistan was left war torn and with a bleak future.

This is no defense or argument for terrorism - it is inherently wrong. But surely, the US must understand the repercussions of its actions.

But what about you, I am sure you have had some schooling being an American resident or citizen, or whatever you are--eduation is something that all Americans are piviledged to, unlike residents of other poor nations. But what has all your education and exposure taught you--disrespect?? So how are you better than anyone else. Too much religion in the middle east has caused far too many problems, conflicts and wars for centuries. I say. let them rule how they want to rule and do what they want. They are the ones that have to face God for what they do. If WE really wanted to fight terrorism we would just go in and level that place and then right behind all of that start rebuilding. If WE were really fighting terrorism WE would find those people here that are from there and send them back there. They don't want us in their area of the world then they should not be in ours.
I'm not really for nuking them but they really need to set off some huge bombs. WE need to do a lot of PR work as well. It is very interesting analysis, but I am failed to understand why no one could acknowledge the fact that most of the policies of so called thirdworld poor nations are being dictated by so called first world nations. And thus most of these policies are good for the first world instead of common people of those concerned nations.

Unfortunately geographically Pakistan and Afganistan are located in such proximities that they have significant importance to the causes of Western world, especially the Capitalist block, which was scared of communists untl late 80s. Like any where when you have wage a gurrila war, you will have to go to people with extreme courage, bravery and trustworthyness, and unfortunately (for pathans), these characteristics are common among Pathans of Pakistan and Afganistan and even more common in tribal people of these two counrties.

Therefore, when CIA needed a plateform and people to wage such a war against communist Russia, they have no better option than Pakistan and Pushtuns, who could easily be moved into Afganistan to fight against Russian along side their pushtun brothers from Afganistan. So especially CIA (and for the sack of Pakistan military, ISI-Pakistan intelligence agency) trained these people to fight against russians their war, and once they defeated Russians; these uneducated poor people were left at God mercy.

During Russian war, they were motivated to fight in the name of Islam and now same Islam is being victimized to declare them as terrorists. I am sure no mother (be it a human being or an animal) will want their kids to die, but when you pushed someone to the point where they have only two options: either they have to die by your bombs or bullet or else they could kill you along with them. Then you should decide .....

Wish if we could use all the money on food, health and education of the people instead of using all this money on bombs to kill these innocent people.

Who are terrorists? Someone misled to believe that killing is the only way to get back at someone and get what you want.
Who is a Pakistani or an American or an Indian? Someone who is a citizen of that nation.
So a terroist hailing from a nation would be called as coming from that nation. Having said that, separating the human community by religion, racism, etc. even after so much advancement is merely out egocentrism. People who follow a leader do not understand this or do not want to believe that this is true or are always brainwashed by the leader or afraid to raise their voice of concern. If the leader is true then why doesn't he sacrifice his own family for suicide bombers?
If I do not like someone, I do not even go in his/her path. Similarly if Taliban or Al Qaida or whoever are anit-western or anti-Pakistan should not don't cross paths. Killing does not solve anything, the hatred still exists. The extremists groups like this must be live in a secluded place like "MARS" or "PLUTO" or kill themselves since they don't like to co-exist with other "NORMAL" human beings.

Contrary to current political correctness, "Fundamentalism" is not the problem. Fundamentalism is not the same thing as militancy. Fundamentalism means you believe/practice the fundamental tennants of the faith. Before you blindly assume moral equivalency of all religious faiths as some of these commenters have, you need to actually compare the core 'fundamental' teachings of that faith. The problem with Islam is that it is a militant faith. Mohammed was a warrior prophet who cursed and killed his enemies. The Quran teaches that this is the will of God (too many references to even begin). Jesus taught to love your enemies. Paul taught that if the message of Christ is rejected, to dust off your sandals and move on to the next town. Irregardless of what people do in the name of their religion, when you look at the teachings of Islam vs. other world religions, it is the only one where its god mandates killing the infidels. Islam itself is the core of the problem.

Also, on a related note, all along Pakistan (and sometimes even the US!...) has viewed India as a threat. Now, with these mullahs running around the mountains and China looming as the next superpower, I hope Pakistan is realizing the folly of its ways. India has always been a secular country with democratic values -- moreover, it has never invaded another country in its entire history. Hey Riz in Indianapolis~ while it is true that the Islamists are co-opting people non-educated (by Western standards), the people they are co-opting are highly indoctrinated into the understanding of their Quran and by that standard they are educated in the "true" teachings of Mohammed.

The truth is that Mohammed would not recognize "moderate" Islam. The apostates of "true" Islam are the moderates and the reason the Jihad grows is because leaders like this one are calling the people to the "true" teachings of the Hadith and Ahadith.

I recommend reading the "PIG (Politically Incorrect Guide) to Understanding Islam and the Crusades" for educational reading. I find it to be ~enlightening.

That's one example of a US airstrike in Pakistan. Yes this was AFTER 9/11 but that doesn't justify it in the least. 9/11 did not give us the authority to attack anywhere we felt like it. Think of it like this - what if another country thought there were "suspected terrorists" in an American town and launched their own airstrike - its a ridiculous and inhumane idea.

Here is what we need to do. Say good bye to the middle east. Let them "win"! Lets pull out, stop sending exports and don't import their oil (which is the only resource these guys have) and see how well off they are without us. Not fair? Then play nice! They don't need to sell us oil! There are plenty of other markets out there they can persue (couldn't say which one of those though... Mules and wepons?).

It's not like we go up there and slap a couple of pipes together, plung a big hole in the earth till the oil flows out and say well good enough, cap it! (and it's thanks to you, enviornmentalists, that this technology is now eco friendly, so keep up the good work).

Lastly, i would like to ask people out there to treat their faith as just that, faith. There is truth in religion, but religion is not truth. That's how people get hurt. See here is the thing, every government is corrupt in some way. Our government happens to be more corrupt in the 'war' department(as are most others.) People will never live in 'peace' because no one will ever agree, there in lies the problem. Since we can't agree ... we go to war to decide who truly was right, which causes all these opinions to blurt out and he-said she-said bull to come out(similar to the Iran-US navy 'incident'.) The only true and honest way we can ever defeat any form of terrorism is for all countries to rise as one and strike them down in the name of peace. Not because your religion says cows are gods, not because his religion says that women are to work and nothing more. Not because her religion says that his religion is wrong. Once people can agree upon that simple fact the world will be rid of terrorism, until that day countries will go to war... people will die, all for nothing. Nothing will ever be wonderous in this world until any and every form of terrorism is wiped off of this planet ... and unfortunately I do not see that happening any time soon.

If a Christian does something, it is just a fringe fanatic but all of Islam and all Muslims get labeled terrorists if one of them is doing wrong. All those people who call the Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him, a warrior prophet and that he raided villages and killed and subjugated people need to show proof. Since I've read the Koran, I have not found a single word that tells me to go kill people. I've been reading the history of this religion and I have not found any proof where Mohammad, peace be upon him, went and killed people. It's a basic tenet of Islam that you can not force people to convert as they will be Monafikeen (hypocrites), which by the way most so called Muslims are anyway nowadays. Moreover, all of you blaming Muslims, should have read the article carefully and realized that this man (more appropriately animal) is killing and threatening Muslims. He might be spewing propaganda about the west but is it you sitting here in the West that is suffering or those poor people down there? And everytime I come to read one of these articles, all the ignorant people come together wanting 'to level' these places and 'start rebuilding'. Please show the rest of the world by example what you have achieved until now by this leveling and rebuilding. You want to kill these terrorists? Stop funding them. Tell your representatives, you don't want funding going to Pakistani politicians. Tell them, you want all the funds to go to schools, colleges, universities, libraraies and the building of civil amenities. Send monitors down there to keep a check on where all the funding is going in one of the most corrupt places on earth. Then and only then will you be able to take away terrorism. These events of today have been in the making for the past many decades. Many are partly responsible for this,including us the western world. During the last 70s & 80s when Saudi was spending 100s of millions to promote islam world wide, nobody complained about money laundering & what the millions were actually used for? All of it was used to breed hatred all over the world. Apart from that no other purpose has been served. During the same period, India kept yelling about Pakistan exporting cross border terrorism to them & creating the Kashmir issue. No one us listened. What we are saying to the world today is the exact same thing India has been yelling to the world since the 80s. Did we listen?? Had the US not paid & created Osama Bin Laden in the so called pretext of fighting the Russians, we would not have been in such a situation today. It is also worth remembering that Saddam Hussein was a close freind of the United States from 1980-1988( during the Iraq-Iran war). So before we make allegations, we need to look into ourselves & see what kind of miserable foreign policies we as americans have had in the past many decades. Americans have always had a failed foreign policy resulting in Today's freind being tomorrow's foe. When are we gonna learn to recognise freind from foe? When are we ever gonna have a stable foreign policy? What we did we Saddam in the eighties we are doing now with Mr Musharraf.
