Three thousand years and the human races have not progressed beyond the barbaric T-Rex character. I listened while a man this week justified taxes on people as a way to maintain a civilized society. When I look around the world I see no civility. There is less Chaos in the outside universe than herer on this planet. We Americans are quick to calling names and critizing other nations but still we do little to quell all of this violence, We do one thing very well and that is We are experts at controlling our own teenage population. Americans have seen war almost continously since the Revolution of 1776. My ancestors have participated in every war since the revolution and yet there is little to show for it except for a skyline full of skyscrapers and big wide and long highways. It is a continous war after war and the young teenagers are sacrificed for these wars political or entertainment and with no end in sight. If there was any comnon sense in this world most of the strife and violence could be ended very quickly, but what would the world do for action and entertainment? Civilized?????

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Right now Bhutto is the lesser of two evils. Bhutto is no angel either. While reporting from Pakistan, Richard should investigate why Benazir´s dad Zulfikar was hanged by Gen.Zia who was the boss of Musharraf in 1979. Between Benazir and Mush, I prefer Mush. After all, he is getting the Pakistani economy growing at 8.5 % a year with the help of his well educated economist P.M. Hard working Pakistanis are no fools and they are unlikely to listen to demagogues like Benazir or Nawas.

One thing I appreciate about Prez.Mush is that when the shove came to push, he did not tuck his tail behind his hind legs and run away shirking away his responsibilities. Coming from a landowner family, all her Harvard/Oxford education has really been for her own financial gains. In her two terms as the former Prime Minister the percentage of eduated Pakistanis remained at 2%-5%, in a population of about 160 million. She HAD TO leave the country because of corruption charges against her and her husand Asif Zardari, commonly known as MR. 10%! Both time she left the country's economy in a wreck! All the current hype about her "leading the charge' against the ruthless dictator Musharraf sells news and that's all. She cares as much for the common Pakistani as she cares for shred of trash on the streets of Karachi! It would be a fairly safe bet to say that Western powers have attempted to set her up, only to insure their own interests. Musharraf, while having now lost his senses and his "democratic" ways, is in a way still the only horse to bet on. If Musharraf goes, the Islamists have a clear shot at Pakistan, with no opposition and then Pakistan will look like a mirror image of a Taliban Afghanistan!

60 years of troubled existence has left Pakistan, truncated, fractious and totally bankrupt leadership-wise. The question should be: If not Bhutto and Musharraf, who then? The answer lies in many different aspects of Pakistan. However, the one factor that has regularly been left out of any national discourses, infact it has been completely avoided as a subject, is mass education. Compulsary, effective and relevant education for the Pakistani masses is the key to the future successful existence of Pakistan. In 60 years the percentage of educated Pakistanis remains abjectly low! Pakistan, even today is plagued by a form of slavery under the various landowners that are the power in the country. Majority of the Pakistanis are infact quite moderate in most ways, believe that there should be some rule of law (not democracy, necessarily) and live in peaceful conditions. Again the leadership, post Jinnah, has always failed because an overwhelming majortiy of them came from the landowner ranks. The rest have been military leaders. America shouldn't get excited about Bhutto. More than likely, if she were to somehow fanagle her way into office, she will emain there on as long as she needs to. Benazir Bhutto will not be able to withstand any political or military attack from the Islamists. Quite possibly she will once again empty out the country's finances and be off on her merry way to live in one of her many residences, from Dubai to Switzerland to London! We sure know which horse to back, don't we ?

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Ask any everyday Pakistani not involved in politics and they will choose a military govt over a so called democratic one, especially the devil in disguise, Bhutto. She is one corrupt lady who will sell out anything in Pakistani to any buyer especially the USA so that she can have her charges dropped, be in power, and have access to more corruption activities.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Part II>
Musarraf is not an angel by any means but at least being in the military he will balance Pakistan's needs with pressure from outside (USA), as all our Generals have had to do before. Bhutto, will sell her mother if the USA tells her if she can have access back to her money and lands in Pakistan. The western media is playing it so different, in Pakistan they hate Bhutto and feel that the USA made a move to move out Musharraf, by getting him to accept Bhutto as a partner, and slowly bring in Bhutto and move him out. This gives the USA complete rule rather than partial rule. Love them politicians in any country...willing to sell it to anyone.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Back before the days of neocon faith-based foreign policy, we had leaders who realized that places like Pakistan weren't Wisconsin and didn't feel the need to offer the public a cast of phony good guys and bad guys. You said Bhuto is not Aung San Suu Kyi. Maninly it is not about the difference between Bhuto and Suu Kyi. It is about the difference between Government of Pakistan and that of Myanmar. Pakistani Government is much more humane than Myanmar Government. Myanmar Dictators are incomparably oppressive to their own people. Comparing Bhuto and Suu Kyi, they both are Oxfore-educated. But you can't find corruption in Noble Peace Prize Winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Moreover Suu Kyi has been sacrificing her whole life(12 of last 18 years in house arrest). Nobody talks loud about Suu Kyi's decade long house arrest while Bhuto's one day house arrest is getting media attention. It is odd and funny.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Are we sending money to that country. I do want to say though that its a little bit late, maybe if you had reported on it a while ago, or maybe if you had reported on the fact that bhutto is friendly to corporate interests, and would make a great leader to have supporting american corporations in one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Maybe if you reported about all the wheeling and dealing to get her back in pakistan, and get musharraf to feel the pressure to drop the charges. Maybe then you might have a little bit of respect, maybe then you might actually be reporting something to inform people about the world around them. Pakistan is the epicenter of all the terrorist activities in the whole world. Instead of trying to attack Iraq or Iran, US should have attacked Pakistan and send it to stone ages. Most of the terrorist training camps have been in Pakistan for the longest time. The sad part is that Pakistanis claim to be very brave but the fact is they are the cowards in this whole world. They don't have the backbone to stand up to their own army. Where in the world would you find the army ruling a nation for the past 50 years of their 60 year independence? This goes to show that they have no backbone otherwise a strong million people on the streets on Pakistan would have send the army back to the barracks and they wouldn’t have dared to take over power. This message is for all the Pakistanis if they have any shame left then instead of hiding in their own houses and claiming to be brave come out in open, tear the ISI’s of this world, tear down the army and break down the army’s backs. Send a message to all the generals for the future that you won’t tolerate army rule ever in Pakistan. Take the example of Russia, when the people came to red square and took the communist out of power. Their politicians are the most corrupt. Bhutto's husband was called Mr.10% because during her regime in power her husband took 10% in bribes for all the contracts awarded. General Musharff is no better and has stolen money from the aid that has been given to Pakistan for the last seven years. All the generals in Pakistani army have become rich while the country has become poorer; the $10 billion aid given to fight the war on terror has gone into the pockets of corrupt politicians and generals. It is really a stupid policy to rely on army in Pakistan to further democracy in a nation. The US foreign policy has weakened the democratic process in Pakistan for the longest time. We can’t have foreign policies tailor made to suit a nation. If we say we stand for democracy then it should be same policy for Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. . In fact even the nuclear scientists in Pakistan have given the secrets to our enemies in the past. Its time the west realize the mistake and Bomb Pakistan once and for all, make sure all the nuclear sites are bombed so that in future we won’t have any more Mr. Khan’s giving the nuclear secrets to other countries. For the Pakistanis I wish them well and hope that the sooner they got rid of the generals and the ISI it will be better for them. In fact they should get rid themselves of the nuclear weapons also which doesn’t serve them at all. What is the use of having nuclear weapons when you don’t have food to eat? Grow wheat, rice and educate your kids. Educate them in science and Math, not in some stupid religious books which doesn’t prepare them to face the world. Teaching them to hate the west is not a solution for Pakistan.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Benazir and Nawaz Sharif have been tested twice. American aid to Pakistan is a military aid to protect its interest in the region. Do we really care who is incharge of the country as long as they serve our interest. Many countries around the world have dictators, who neglect human rights, torture their own people, loot the economy of the country, but we are not maintaining a presence there because it doesn't serve or affect our interest. America had a vested interest to keep the Russian's out in Afghanistan, thus creating Al-Qaida, and now to fight the demon it helped create in the first place, it gave Musharraf billions of dollars in aid, so please, remember that it is our policies that have created a mess in that region, unstabilized the whole area, created thousands, if not millions of refugees, orphans and widow and most importantly instead of bringing the rhetoric of democracy and freedom that we peddled along with the "USAID", we have instilled a deep mistrust of all things American....Benazir and Musharraf are playing to the piper's music, and of course all these things will come back to haunt us, and our future generations for years to come. I think we have to see how our actions have not made this world a safer or better place, how we haven't succeeded in bringing the world together, and how even billions of dollars in aid will not work, if there is no well thought out policy behind it and long term diplomacy/emergency preparedness to deal with, when things take a turn for the worse, or if the policy fails..For those of us who have experienced war first hand, have seen things blow up in our face, have heard the sirens and ran for cover, have prayed to God to send someone who will please stop this carnage, where are all the people of the world who are watching this and not demanding to have it stopped, (not the TV war that most Americans see, where we can turn the TV off when we can't bear to watch it anymore and then go to bed), know that War is not a solution, it breeds hatred, resentment , anger, and many other strong negative feelings and it will create whole new generations who won't know how to resolve issues in a peaceful way, ever!
Remember when we point one finger at someone else, three fingers point right back at us. Try it! Just hold your hand in front of you and point your index finger at someone, three of your own fingers point right back at you. It is a simple idea...Richard Engel, I applaud you for being objective and always reporting the facts without coloring it with your opinions. I have watched you cover the war from the very beginning and admire your courage and objectivity in bringing both sides of the picture to the forefront. Unfortunately in this day and age truth is hard to swallow... and very few people will accept it, especially those who govern!

We are lucky that we as a people in this country can make a difference (look at what the people of Pakistan have to go through to be heard), it is good to be able to blog and voice our opinions, but it would be so much better if we all go out and vote and bring about the changes we truly believe in. Let us call our leaders to accountability if they don't deliver. Americans are a good people, so let us show the world we can make an effort to right our wrongs, and we will do everything in our power to rectify our mistakes! Every American, who reads this...PLEASE go out and VOTE! we know that we can make a difference! And WE WILL!

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

It's too late to do anything except watch...
With all the extremist and religous fanatics out there....The weak, if not nonexistant governments...The poverty stricken vs the rich...The black vs the white..Terrorists vs everyone.....

Someone will be detinatimg a nuclear bomb soon...
These peaple in the Middle East, Africa, and the Far East are not stable and/or intelligent enough to have control of weapons of any kind, let alone nuclear.....

Too Late We(civilized people) LOSE !!!!! Lunatics WIN ????

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

I don't see this country as a Democratic country in any form.
1.It has a long history of Dictatorship(Seezing the democratic government many times)
2.Santuary of World Terrorist/Organisations
3.Comparing to IRAQ and Afganistan,Pakistan seems to be more dangerous country in earth.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Sadly, while it is difficult to trust the media's take on any of these events, I do know a Pakistani who has expressed the same sentiment as this article: Between Bhutto and Musharraf there is no "good guy", only a corrupt struggle for power.

Hopefully a respectable leader is raised up in Pakistan. Lord knows they need one.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

I believe Hasan Ansari, Atlanta, nailed it with his view of Bhutto posted November 12, 2007 at 9:45am. But wait, I repeat myself. It doesn't matter in the slightest about Bhutto or Muaharraf since neither of them has a chance of ending up as the leader of Pakistan. It is inevitable that within a few years Pakistan will become another Islamic Republic. The sooner the United States drops its support of right wing thieves and crooks and abandons its policy of making the world safe for Democracy by imposing Democracy on everybody at the point of a gun, the less trouble we shall have with the new Islamic rulers of Pakistan. And with other Islamic states. We have got to stop antagonizing nations who have legitimate Islamic governments, trying to overthrow those governments and replace them with one more favorable to us and seek some accomodation with them. It won't be easy because we have made so many mistakes regarding Islam and the Middle East in the last few years that even the lowest farmer or herder knows and hates the United States. We shall never, ever have an Islamic state that is favorable to us, but until we stop threatening them with our outdated, inneffective, laighable and obscenely expensive military we shall have no chance at even an accomodation.

The Islamic state is the way of the future in the Middle East, Africa and Asia and even someone as eminently intelligent and successful as George W. Bush cannot wish that fact away.

It is not necessary that these states be bent upon the destruction of the United States, as their people don't have enough time to bother with that nonsense and their leaders will follow their people if we try to work with them. But as long as we try to keep them down and not allow them the same national status as Western nations, they shall become more and more contemptible of us and, while I believe that the United States would start a war much sooner than any Islamic state, none of them seperately have the capability of harming us. They're smarter than us in their undrstanding of human nature and what constitutes a real threat and what a political threat. We have time to work with them because Iran is the only true Islamic state at this time with Syria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iraq and Malaysia to follow shortly. Ease up on the Iran rhetoric, quit the threats and seek accomodation. It is never, ever too late to talk. It might work, but of course it will have to wait for a new President to replace the malevolent, confrontational, incompetent we have now.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Sounds like the way our "ELECTED"? government is headed.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

These people seem to stand for nothing. If all they do is spew hot air...wait, that sounds like our own politicians. Maybe our journalists could serve us better by applying this same sort of criticism and skepticism to our own politicians. Quite frankly, if the leading contenders for the U.S. presidency are Giuliani and Clinton, then the American media is severely uneducated and misinformed. Therefore, they spread the misinformation to the U.S. populace, which is probably why Obama is slipping in the polls. He is so smart that half the things he says fly right over the heads of the media, they'd rather focus on the fact that he's black and has a funny name. The mega media machine running this nation is simply a monopoly of deceit and corruption. The only way this country will become truly democratic is if there is a full scale revolt by the people. Until then, they will continue to be ran by giant corporations who will help to elect whichever candidate will make their executives richer. This country has never been less free. We vote, and yet our votes aren't even counted. Instead it all comes down to the electoral college, a system that most Americans are barely aware even exists. Freedom would be a President who is elected solely on the tally of the peoples vote. No special interests whatsoever.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

With the current situation of Pakistan and the constant media hype over the emergency rule and media banning, I have noticed one thing that most Pakistani channels are airing support to corrupt leaders like Bhutto & Sharif! Or should it be the US government under President Bush, who has taken almost two terms to understand and say that Musharraf "can't be the president and the head of military at the same time"? These paradoxes apart, if the two gentlemen are now apparently willing to play ball with the lady, they need to be duly careful as she knows the craft of politics better than many. Pakistanis elected both Bhutto and Sharif twice. Both of them turned out to be robbers of the highest degree who plundered the poor country for their own monetary gain. They did so while already filthy rich and knowing that an overwheming majority of the country's population could not afford to get enough food to fill their stomach. When in power, they curtailed civil liberties and freedom of the press. When Benazir was the Prime Minister, her thug husband Zardari had airconditioned stables for his horses at government expense. This, in a country where many poor people die every summer from heat. He robbed the country's meagre resources by awarding government contracts to those who paid a cut to him. He started out as Mr. 10% but progressed to a much higher percentage later. A dangerous and brutal criminal, he arranged murder of his own brother-in-law. The country became his feudal state. All this happened with full knowledge and approval of Benazir. Sharif, a protege of the late dictator Zia ul Haq became so intoxicated with power that under the guise of Islam, he was in the process of introducing Sharia law to replace he judicial system before he was booted out. He was also in the process of having himself proclaimed as Imer Ul Momanin, meaning Ruler of Muslims, with absolute power and authority over everyone in the country. He was not satisfied to be a democratically elected prime minister of the country. Now he is talking about bringing democracy to the country. Both Benazir and Sharif are birds of the same flock: greedy, manipulative, selfish, corrupt, power hungry and immoral. When they talk of democracy, human rights, freedom of press and freedom of judiciary, they conveniently forget their own dismal record in all those areas. Hypocritical politicians and gullible public--that is the tragedy of Pakistan. In the mean time, people be damned. How sad. He has transformed the lives of ordinary people for the better. Our democratically-elected leaders have proven to be brazenly corrupt, better suited to starring in a musical farce called "Goons & Buffoons" than aspiring to public office.

As matters stand, the problem is not whether Musharraf should stay or go. There is no question; he HAS to stay. There is no other viable option - for Pakistan or the world community. This is not to say he's perfect: he's made several mistakes (the biggest being his revival of the MQM, a party that spread a reign of terror and lawlessness through its violent urban network in Karachi in the 1990s) but his stand-off with the Supreme Court is not one of them. The legal community has a long history of corruption. For them to claim any kind of moral highground and use it to justify behaving as a political party - as they had in recent months - was clearly an attempt to stage a new kind of coup and to add instability and uncertainty.

The real problem is we have no viable option other than Musharraf. The ruling classes belong mostly to feudal families, like Benazir. In election-time, voters in their consitituencies do exactly as they are told by their lords and masters. As long as feudalism exists, landlords continue to operate as absolute, Oxford-educated rulers in their lands, with the power of life, law and death. Democracy holds little meaning in such a context. The only other politicians with mass influence are the mullahs who exploit religion rather than land ownership as their power base.

Democracy can't happen till real social and economic reforms take place, which no 'democratically' elected leader has ever done. Musharraf has made dramatic inroads in many economic and social areas, including the free-est press in our history. If this is military dictatorship, I'm all for it.
Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Feel sorry for the people of pakistan. Can Pakistanis be proud of Bhutto as their leader in comparison to San Suu Kyi, not all, Kyi is a true leader and fighter for democracy sacrificing her life for country under the force of the brutal Army Junta of Myanmar. What has the world done for her fight, can this be comparable to Bhutto. It is a shame to see how media plays in supporting Bhutto rather than San Suu Kyi. Nawaz Sharif is another rouge, he benefitted by strengthening and fortifying his family and industrial wealth.Tried to get rid of the General who banished him out to Saudi on request of his Royal friends from Jordan and Saudi Arabia, where he is living in luxury in one of the royal palaces. Lastly don't forget the Judiciaries, they are no Angels, they are as corrupt as the leaders, all like to have their fingers in the pie.The comes the Mullas who under the banner of Islam want to take over and impose selfmade Shariat laws, bringing extremism, hate against the non Muslim World, depriving the rights of women folk etc.etc. With these elements can anyone think that Democracy can work in Pakistan, it is 60 years since Jinnah made this country thinking the Muslims of India will have a Democractic State, yet there is no sign of such a thing like Democracy. Why, because 70% of the people are illiterate who can be easily bought or brainwashed and made to accept. In the 30% literate ones, 5% of these are the rich Feudal Lords and Industrialists and their generations Like the Bhutto's,Sharief's Pagara's, Zardari's etc the most corrupt rule and safe guard and amass their wealth. The rest 25% of the literates end up as educators, army officers, lawmakers, etc of these 10% are again bought and guided by their paymasters. What can the remaining 15% do, if any one rises up they can be easily crushed. So what happens, the Army has to rule and keep the illeterate and the masters down with there iron fists, these then start crying out loud for democracy to the World. Until and unless education, honesty, integrity, with love and compassion for a democractic Pakistan comes up, it is better that it is kept under control. I feel sorry I know because I have also belong to that unfortunate nation and had to exit out elsewhere where true democracy exists.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Lorainne CA, I agree with your view 100%, what you say is the real truth --- the more they get the greedier and corrupt they become..
USA needs to stop giving aid to corrupt Goverments and dictators.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

A repeat of the 1979- 1980 American screw up in Iran?President Carters Idea of solving the Musslim uprising
in Iran, gave us the Ayatolas and insane leaders of today. The Shah of Iran,a strong supporter of the US,
tried to sqash the riots in Theran.President Carter
took sides with the Mob,and pressured the Shah to give
up his power to rule.Promising Asylum to the Shah, and then denying entry into the US.[What a stand up Guy]
We are facing the results today.I compare todays
Pakistan,with 1980 Iran.President Musharraf,also a
supporter of the US, keeper and protector of all the nuclear weapons, needs our full support. It seems to me,
President Bush, and some other missguided Polititions
supporting a corrupt former exiled Ms.Bhutta.[like
Mr.Khomeni,he also used to live in exile in Paris]We
dont seem to learn from our mistakes, not supporting our friends 100%.Imposing our kind of unwanted Democracy,on other Countries,I call stupidity.Like the
old saying goes"HISTORY REPEATS IT SELF"

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

What if Musharraf really IS a good guy? In the recent past some personalities have risen to the rank to show off their metal such as Aitzaz Ahsan. Although he belongs to Bhutto's party but he seems thoroughly disgusted with her and has led on his own the the fight for the re installment of the chief Justice of Pakistan few months back. In the process has earned the respect of many. Imran Khan, to some is another option. But when those that are in power, themslves orchestrate the 'lead' in greed, conspire to remain un-accountable and the people continue to suffer in tyranny, it's always the correct time to intervene on the side of the people. In the region under scrutiny the religiously intolerant genie was released from the bottle, by us, and whole-heartedly assisted till they drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan.
Now the chickens come home to roost!
The Rove-Cheney-Bush 'intellect' contrived to formulate a sort of alliance of: a military dictator who has carried out a coup against himself; and a wealthy, recognized as corrupt, known autocratic politician of sorts to be their proxy in attempting
to suck the genie back into a different bottle under the pretense of giving rise to a 'democracy 'that would overcome religious intolerance.
Is that a joke? or is it a Joke. The once well-meaning Musharraf failed to bring Sharif and Bhutto to the trial that their abject performance deserved. Then in 7 long years he miserably failed to bring into leadership positions and nurture the necessary alternative of GOOD leaders from within the political parties of those despised and discredited two. He has behaved totally ir-rationally ever since he had Sardar Akbar Bugti of Baluchistan killed. And the Red Mosque massacres, and the attempt to have himself declared president for another 5 years without holding an election to so decide, and the failed attempt to 'sack' the highest judicial authority in Pakistan and then the 'emergency' and the criminal clamp down on civil liberties and human rights are all there for us to see. That proves that he has
been recognized as power-hungry and has now lost the respect of a large percentage of the people. He is no more the answer to the well-being of the people. Bush needs to stop repeating the sense-less phrase "stay the course" in this situation The Pakistan Army possesses the potential to safe-guard the country's nuclear weaponry and now in this internal turmoil to provide the people of Pakistan with the alternative of a SYSTEM that will ensure that the NEXT ELECTION BE FREE AND FAIR. We should advise the speedy setting up of a PROVISIONAL Council of leadership comprising personalites of conscience such-like Aitizaz Ahsan, Imran Khan, retired Lieut.Gen. Hamid Gul, Adil Najam and more from the provinces, for this purpose. With firm committments on oath from this proposed Council to relinquish control "soon after" the setting up of the future administration, the people of Pakistan may well see the advantage of setting up a firm date for the next election. The Pakistan Army under the guidance of the next in line, who-ever it may choose should remain in the background this time.
In closing, let us not forget that, historically, the "suicide-bomber", usually, is a product of deep dedication to a cause that surpasses their most cherished possession, ie life. To think that one should impulsively wage a shooting war naming it "terror" and then expect to "win" is sheer foolhardiness. The 5 year long rape of Iraq is in the foreground here. Such genies, so-released, will, in the long-term, need to be handled, for realistic out-come, with measures other than stupid war-mongering.
Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Bhutto bacame prime-minister of Pakistan in late 80's and 90's. The solution for the betterment of Pakistan's Future lies in having a solid building block of strong Democratic institutions, Justice System, and Educational Revolution. These building blocks will guide this Nation away from extremism of all sorts, ethnic and gender inequalities, dependencies on Foreign aid and depths of ignorance. The Republic of Pakistan stands at a crucial crossroad where the best help a Friend and ally like United States can give to the People of Pakistan is the gift of moral support and guiding light towards true freedom of Democracy. Let this symbolic gift from U.S be ‘Statue of Liberty’ for a Nation yearning to come out of 60 years of distressful darkness to the true enlightened liberty of masses. It is important that U.S understands this opportunity of goodwill to foster democratic forces in motion and not align itself with morally corrupted stooge Generals and selfish Benazirs. The propagandists and ignorant fools will drum up the fear cards of religious fanaticism and nuclear fiascos, but the goodwill by U.S and West in support of removal of this Mushy regime will pay enormously in the fast forward Future as dividends in Trust and Friendship. We should not view protests against Mushaaraf as something against the interests of U.S but rather as birth pains of a Democratic Nation ready to bloom as a responsible state on the World stage.

The Billion of Dollars in aid to the World’s impoverished and allies is a nice gesture but we should be needful of our people in U.S before meddling in affairs of others and becoming a ‘Rich Dad’ solution for them. It is better to guide Nations like Pakistan towards a true Democracy than giving them loads of money with no committed solutions. The only funds if possible should be given towards the strengthening of above given building blocks for the allies. We should be spending the tax payers money towards improving Health, Education, Economics and Security of everyone in good ole’ United States towards a prosperous Future. It is time for U.S to reflect and act internally …and drop the imperial stooge baggage of Mushies, Benazirs, Hosnis and Saudis of the World.
Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Kind of similar to Hillary (Bhutto) Clinton getting a piece of the "Bush" machine.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

OK, so now we have the Bhutto, Sharif, Musharraf, the Taliban and al Quida all clamoring for control of Pakistan. One is just a corrupt as the
other. Maybe, if we play our cards in our traditional mannor, we can spend billions supporting another looser, and Al Quida will end up with
Pakistan's nuclear arsonal, whoopee!

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Pakistan needs me as its new leader. Anyone ever think of that? They depend too much on the Koran and don't or have never read the rights of man. If they would teach that or about the Magna Carta maybe they would open up. But until they stop using a relitous text for how they govern Western style Democracy won't work. What else is needed is for someone from a major political party to stand up and say as I am about to say.
"On behalf of the Indepdence Party of Minnesot 3rd Congressional District, We support the PEOPLE of Pakistan in their struggle for freedom against terror, exploitation, and movement to a greater voice in their goverance to be a free and Independent people."
Good luck Pakistan and the rest of the Middle East.
Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Great piece once again.
Being a Pakistani living in the US, it is quite embarrassing to see what Pakistan has to offer to the world. i.e. Bad News!
I would like to request you if possible do a story on Imran Khan, a harsh critic of President Musharaf. One of the most popular Pakistani politician within the Pakistani & Indian communities across the US is this guy. He has massive support in the younger generation, although he has been termed as Anti-American, the truth is quite the contrary. He maybe against the US policy, just like many of us here but NOT against the US, as a country. Being a disgruntled Republican, I was surprised to learn that Gov. Jeb Bush was shocked the way he was enthusiastically taken in a gathering in India, where he was visiting, where Imran Khan was also present as a guest.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Didn't Musharraf say he was going to step down as head of the Army if he was elected. Thanks Richard! Despite the media's blind hatred of Bush, Musharrif is the better of the evils. Real leaders must make difficult choices, and Bush has chosen correctly. He has also stayed true to his principle of protecting democracy at all cost by vigorously opposing Musharrif's crackdown, despite the potentially disasterous alternative of Bhutto actually gaining control in Pakistan. That's just the plain truth reality and once again Bush is denied credit while the dishonest leftist media spin it as "Bush supports dictator Musharrif against democracy and Bhutto". People better realize that hating Bush is not a legitimate basis for deception, propaganda and spin to undermine American interests simply to oppose Bush. Thanks Richard, for reporting some truth - even though it doesn't hurt Bush.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

I think that Bhutto is a nightmare come true. There have been rumours of domestic violance between her and husband Zardari. She always acted like a weak Eastern wife. How can she claim that she can take Pakistan out of turmoil. Her husband lets her on the loose when she is fighting for the post but when she gets it, he is the actual prime minister and not her. Pakistani people should do something to stop her. I wish i can do something from US to help. Musharraf belongs to middle class, he has not stolen Pakistan's money, even if he has acted like a dictator at times,he has given people a lot of freedom. He will not live forever but i believe that he has given Pakistanis a taste of freedom of expression that they will not forget. We owe this to him. He should be supported in his cause.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Don't forget Benazir Bhutto leaked important secrets to India regrding Khalistan Issue. There was never an independent judiciary in Pakistan. I hate to burst the bubble but Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudary does not represent independent judiciary. He was one od those judges who took oath under previous PCO (order imposed when Musharraf last came into power). It is ironic that he went out the same way.

He has no right to complain as he himself was a product of PCO. If anyone who needs to be commended then we should commend the judges who did not take oath under the previous PCO.

This man is a self centered person with a feudal mentality. He is in bed with Nawaz Sharif and both are pro extremists. This guy was releasing terrorists and called for Lal Masjid and Madrassa to be rebuilt.

Don't get too much excited for the "heroic judges who did not take oath under PCO". Little knowledge is a dangerous thing and this is what is going on here. I would advice everyone to form opinions based on facts and after going through all aspects.

Benazir is ok when it comes to her views on extremism but she is hated in Pakistan for her corrupt rule. Was she the one who gave Pakistan 100s of channels? NO! Her rule was more dictatorial than Musharraf? Was she the one who brought bills for women and minorities? No!

The only real and sincer moderate in pakistan is Musharraf. His problem is that he is from Army. Remember Musharrag did not elect to come into power. he was in the air when he was removed but the top brass of army supported their leader, removed Nawaz Sharif and made Musharraf the man in charge. So when he landed in pakistan, everything was done already.

So what's the solution if Nawaz Sharif is extremist, Benazir is corrupt and Musharraf is dictator. Unfortunately, in a country where 70% of people live in villages and where feudalism is present you cannot have a Unites States type democracy! There will never be such situation until you get rid of feudalism. Nawaz and Benazir are feudals with unlimited wealth. Their seats are secured and they will keep showing up again and again.

My hope is that Musharraf (who is the only sincere leader to pakistan and a geniune moderate) needs to be there at all cost. I am worried that if he is not there for some more time then these feudals will come back, loot and destroy and that will lead to insatbility of 1990s which favors extremists.

Musharraf has to be there to keep these in check. Ideally (if there is no feudalism) these politcians should not be there but i think they will come back now but we need someone to check on their activites.

Thanks

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

It is the USA and China(They both cheat each other too) who have made Pakistan a nuclear power. A leopard never changes its spot. She had no problem making deals (to drop corruption charges against her) with General Musharraf while he still wears his miltary uniform. Presently, she is using the public discontent to make Musharraf's uniform a major obstacle to democracy in Pakistan. Her record as a very corrupt prime minister speaks for itself.
I was one of those that felt that spreading democracy in Iraq is a good thing. However, watching so many Americans die and the ingratitude of some people in Iraq has greatly changed my view. I certainly believe that Musharraf can do better in terms of ridding Pakistan of Terrorist and reducing corruption. He will not deliver OBL because he knows that if he does, the U.S.A will cut down on its aid to Pakistan. We need to put more pressure on him to deliver OBL.
We have to ask ourself if madam Bhutto has the courage to go after extremist in Pakistan. Would she, in an Islamic country have been able to deliver Khalid Sheik Mohammed and others to the U.S.A after 9/11 ?
As previously expressed in this forum, democracy that works in the U.S.A will not necessarily work in other parts of the world. There are just too many variables. We can only hope for a modify form of democracy that reflects the culture and aspirations of the Pakistani people. The only victims here are the Pakistani people. I hope that things work out for them.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

In any developed and civilized country, Judicary is free and independent. For any country to progress financially, socially and democratically,it is must to have independent judicial system. Benazir was disgracefully fired from premiership twice.Same happened with Nawaz Sharif.Prime minister Zufiqar Ali bhutto was executed while General Zia was blown up in the Air when he was on a flight to Islam Abad. The list is very long.Looking at the whole picture in pakistan at present, I can see general Musharraf will face the same fate,A disgrace or being taken out.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Musharraf is a great President, he made the mistake of letting Bhutto in and everyone is now realizing she is nothing but a power hungry woman. President Bush will be making a wise decision in supporting Musharraf because he is the only sane person there who will help Pakistan and the US.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

Good for you Lorraine. But the impression such events convey can often be misleading and unrepresentative of a country as a whole.

A few days ago I was sitting in a cafe sipping best Italian espresso and reading a news magazine.

The front page was full of furious faces and clenched fists under the headline, The Most Dangerous Nation in the World isn't Iraq, it's Pakistan.

Hugh Sykes journey took him to the Chitral Valley in north west Pakistan

The cafe was in a smart bookshop in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.

I sighed and turned to the article inside.

It was a revealing analysis of some penetration of a few places in Pakistan by the Taleban and al-Qaeda.

I pondered the magnifying-glass effect of dramatic news coverage.

The suicide bomb attack on Benazir Bhutto's homecoming parade in Karachi in October, which killed an estimated 140 people, and the assault on a Taleban pocket in the Swat valley, a tourist destination, took place while I was in Pakistan.

But neither event had a noticeable effect on the general sense of security and stability where I was in Islamabad or on the road.

The notion that Pakistan is more dangerous than Iraq is absurd.

Until recently suicide bombs, murder, and kidnapping were routine in Iraq.

And there is no way I would do there what I have just done in Pakistan: take a holiday.

Never alone

I hired a car in Islamabad and headed out onto the partially completed M2 motorway that will eventually connect Lahore (near the Indian border) with Peshawar (the last city on the road to the Khyber Pass and Afghanistan).

But motorways are boring, so I left the M2 and re-joined the ancient Grand Trunk Road, which links most of the main towns of northern Pakistan.

FOREIGN OFFICE TRAVEL ADVICE
We advise against all travel to areas where there are reports of military or militant activity...
We advise against all but essential travel to Quetta (Balochistan) and... against using the rail network or bus services in the whole of Balochistan
There is a high threat from terrorism and sectarian violence throughout Pakistan...
You should avoid any demonstrations or large gatherings of people

Full FCO advice for Pakistan
For much of the route it is lined with eucalyptus trees, their almost-autumn leaves and silvery bark shining in the clear October sun as I drove along.

Driving in Pakistan is fast and sometimes chaotic, but not competitive.

They even hoot politely. And one great danger at home you hardly ever have to contend with in Pakistan is drunk drivers and people with concentration blurred by hangovers.

My destinations were Chitral, an isolated valley in the far-north-west on the Afghan border and Gilgit, close to China and Tajikistan.

The round-trip was more than 1,200 miles (nearly 2,000km) and included mountain passes almost half as high as Everest.

And although I was driving alone, I was hardly ever on my own.

There is public transport but not a lot. So, people walk long distances along these high stony roads and if a car passes, they hold out a hand hoping for a lift.

Twelve-year-old Kashif, one of Hugh Sykes' companions on his road trip

One morning, 12-year-old Kashif sat with me for a while.

He had been expecting to walk for more than an hour to the nearest town, to buy a new pair of shoes.

He showed me the pair he was wearing. The right shoe's upper was half split away from the sole.

Kashif spoke almost perfect English, good enough to warn me as we turned a tight bend, "Be careful, uncle, road badly damaged round next corner from earthquake."

Earthquake damage from 2005, still unrepaired.

I spent the night at a hotel next to the old fort at Mastuj, near the snowy Hindu Kush peak Tirich Mir which is 7,690m high (25,200 feet).

The hotel consists of small timber and stone cabins set in a wood of walnut trees and poplars and a plane tree reputed to be 200 years old.

I woke to autumn colours every bit as wondrous as anything I have seen in Kew Gardens or New England.

My next hitch-hiking companion was Mohammed, an English Literature student at Peshawar University.

"So you study Shakespeare?" I asked.

Mohammed, an English Literature student at Peshawar University

"Yes, and Wordsworth."

And John Donne, I wondered?

"Ah, John Donne," he raptured.

"John Donne... the poetry of love."

I do not know any Donne by heart but when I attempted Shakespeare's Seven Ages of Man from As You Like It, Mohammed completed every line as we bumped along the dusty road.

Parts of Pakistan are deeply conservative, devoutly Muslim places, and I was not signalled for lifts by many women.

But there were some.

A mother and grandmother, sitting in the back, their heads covered but not their faces and one-year-old Anis and his father Samir in the front with me.

He protested when I took a photograph of the two women but they did not object and posed happily as they waited for the flash.

When I delivered them to the Gilgit hospital where the little boy had an appointment with a heart specialist, his father was so pleased and grateful he gave me a bear hug, and a massive smile that erased his earlier stern objections to taking a picture.

I gave lifts to more than 20 people, learned how to say "You're welcome" in Urdu (Koi Batnahi), and had to hold back tears when two children said thank you for their lift and offered me money to help pay for the petrol.

From Our Own Correspondent was broadcast on Saturday 10 November, 2007 at 1130 GMT on BBC Radio 4. Excellent reporting as always. In the interview with Musharraf it was interesting to hear some of his answers. I don't not think that journalists should be taken with her because of the way she presents herself. Yet as you state in the article she does have a flair for the dramatic. Musharraf may have a point is saying she "distorts the facts" because she wants to receive a certain response from her supporters. Neither Musharraf nor Bhutto is the answer to all of of Pakistans problems. Musharraf may be the lesser of two evils as others have written. I hope she remains under house arrest because it seems when she emerges even more violence occurs. More developments will come in the next few days. Thank you for your continuing amazing reports Richard! Stay safe as always! Peace to you always!

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

This is typical "two party" BS. Musharraf and Bhutto are proven to be corrupt yet these are the only choices that Pakistan will be allowed to have. America is forcing Democracy down everyones throat, but fails to tell the little man that your choices are going to be limited by the powers that be. Both of these individuals are corrupt, but how is that any different than Guiliani vs Clinton '08? American democracy is a sham for capitalistic greed and that is what we are 'infecting' the rest of the world with.

Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

So good to see some people in the US not jumping at the chance to shove Benazir down our throats. Bhutto & Sharif are time tested failures openly groping for power. Musharaff maybe a poor judge of political intrigues but has emerged as an honest, bold and decisive leader. His fight against extemeists in Pakistan has been a sucess. 95% of Pakistan's mainland is clear. However remaining 5% tribal areas(The most difficult area in the world to operate) remains to be cleared. The best option for Pakistan today can be to opt out of war against terror, to rid itself from the manance of suicide bombers but we under Musharaff want to get rid of them permanantaly for a safe and modren homeland for our children. Musharaff is fool to have trusted Bhutto under US pressure. We also saw a ray of hope by reallignment of two moderate forces but it is clear Bhutto in her lust for power has choosen confrontation instead of compromise against extemists. Am sure Musharaff can deliver if freed from the shackles of democracy fudamentalists and is allowed to work independently. We are fed up from Bhuttos,Sharifs, Chaudris and Maulvis. Please spare Musharaff because silent majority wants him(The reason why masses are not comming out).
