We went into Iraq with a shock and awe program that was supposed to intimidate the Arab world into submission. If, as Mr. Cheney implied, we slapped them around they would show us some respect. At the same time, we went out of our way to needlessly humiliate a weakened Soviet Union and a militarily weak China. And now the chickens come home to roost as we head to another cold war, but with a far larger and more powerful collection of adversaries. But all is not lost. The massive military spending will be manna from heaven for all those right wingers in the weapons business. As we approach 50% of total military defense spending in the world, we will soon hear that we need to boost the military spending even more. The worse our foreign policy gets, the more money these guys make.

I have been to Russia 4 times during President Putin's administration have been in office. You have to understand the corruption that went on after the fall of the soviet union. Most of the business owners, the ones truly complaining about Putin and taking away freedoms were the ones that were most corrupt. It has now become safer to go to Russia under Putin's era than under that former drunk, Yeltsin.

Putin has spent most of his time cleaning up Yeltsin's mess and his relationship with the USA could not be better. Democracy has not eroded there, it is actually so much better there now than 10 years ago. All the politicians were so corrupt it made our politicians look like kids selling lemonade on the side of the street.

As far as the comparisons to our President Bush, I would honestly tell you they are neck and neck when it comes to fitness. So, god bless him is he wants to show it off at age 54 when most men want to hide their bodies. By the way, President Bush is 60 years old too.

It seems that some people see being the leader of our country as a simple job. They have not seen nor do they want to view before and after pictures of him years into his presidency. Say what you will about Bush and nothing that I can say will change your mind but the job puts a lot of stress and strain upon the physical frame of a man. The constant finger pointing, ,criticisms, and contending with a non-supportive left-wing congress would tell on anyone. Worrying about the safety of his countrymen, dealing with world opinion and its leaders have made him much grayer and more wrinkled than when he was first elected. Thank God he has the strength to still stand up to it all and not waver to the idiotic rantings and ravings of the weak Democratic-led Congress who fold up at the first sign of a crisis. Every day they ignore the needs of the American people and have only one agenda on the books and that's break down President Bush. What about immigration, health care for all of us, and something really beneficial and, most important of all, start earning the fat salaries they get by passing some domestic legislation instead of wasting our time and tax dollars flogging a dead horse? Remember, they do not need our vote to give themselves a payraise. Putin strikes a healthy figure and you put our man down by saying we deserve what we got. Who, obviously, has the most hassle leading his country comparing the support he gets from it? I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count. Here, we have a choice whether to support our leader while there, a dictatorship. From the polls, the crybabies are in the majority. The best way to fight terrorism is to run from it or just ignore entirely is their motto. While our leader has strived to keep us safe, most of those being kept safe seem not to support our efforts but still reap the rewards. How long could we count on them when the chips are down?

I find it interesting that so many people refer to President Putin as being like an "average Joe." Perhaps by American standards but certainly not by the standards of Russia. For all his foibles, Boris Yelsin was far more like the typical Russian man. Boris Nikolaevich may have had a weakness for vodka, but so do a lot of other Russians. He also seemed to have a Russian soul. He was a man who was not without flaws, but they were the kind of flaws that the average man saw in himself and could identify with. Vladimir Vladimirovich is a much more measured character. He is very in control, as you would expect from someone who is coming out of the intelligence services. His physical fitness is far from typical of Russian men his age. I think one of the reasons for his popularity here is that he is the sort of strong, confident and assertive guy that most Russians wish they were, but are not. Vladimir Vladimirovich may be a lot of things, but I don't think that an "average Joe" is one of them.

Hey, if Putin offered me a chance to go camping, hiking, and fishing with him, I would take him up on it. There's supposed to be some incredible fishing over there, and I'm sure he would know the best spots (absolute power tends to bring you the very best information). Honestly, if Bush did the same, I would also take him up on it.

I really don't particularly care for either guy. However, finding common ground with someone you disagree with provides you an opportunity to communicate with people that you would never have anything to do with, in a low-pressure, more comfortable setting. I would certainly bring up my concerns with either man's governance, hopefully in a way that they might actually listen and think about it. Of course, if they suddenly become total jerks in the face of constructive criticism, well, at least you tried and now you know the true nature of the man.

Some people here seem to have very vauge, and quite frankly, ignorant views on how the world works.

Firstly, about the Putin pictures, which, allegedly is what this article is about, I would say that Putin's physique and attactiveness largely irrelevant factors, excepting the minor factor that he is probably less likely to die from something like a sudden heart attack. Do I think Putin is attempting to crush democracy in Russia? Not really, since that implies that there was a stable democracy in Russia before Putin got there. If he isn't any better than the ruling crowd before him, he's not really much worse. Yeah, he was a KGB thug, and those types of methodolgies and tactics seem to be his modus operandi. But it was those thugs who were running the country since Stalin took over. Russia hasn't really had self rule since before the Mongol invasion (excepting Alexandr Kerensky's six months of rule after the February revolution).

Now, for all of you Bush bashers. I am sick. *sick* of hearing that "We went into Iraq because of Oil." Let me explain something very, very simple. Even the original, extremely overoptomistic estimates put the cost of the invasion at something like 200 billion dollars if they wanted to rebuild and remain. And even if they did that, it would not be assured that other regional powers, like Saudi Arabia or Syria or Iran would not step in and snatch the oil away from us. If we really wanted oil that bdly, we could you know, just buy it. Iraq was under crippling economic sanctions at the time, and wasn't in a position to bargain too hard. And, coincidentally, since most of the people who are saying "Oil, Oil, Oil," have such a low opinion of the republican administration, I would like you to ask yourselves that if Bush was so evil, why wouldn't he just cut a nice little deal with the nasty dictator and just buy the oil.

Now, to be fair, I will cite my own opinion, which is far more cynical than the oil one.

Setting: The War Room of the White House, probably some time in the summer of 2002. The Afganistan campaign has gone on without much of a hitch, but Bin Laden got away, and the whole thing is likely to fade into obscurity. Bush still doesn't want to go down in history as the "Guy who let 9/11 happen" and his second victory in the election is really not looking all that certain. He wants to do something muscular to impress the voters back home, so who does he look at?
Well, current attention is on the middle east, and we have three real enemies there at that moment. Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Syria is landlocked, hard to get a supply line to. Iran is extremely strong, at least on defense, probably looking to be too much like the bloodbath Iraq is turning into now. But Iraq..... Iraq looked weak (Remember how easily they fell apart in the first Gulf War?) Iraq probably doesn't have WMD's or they would have shown them the first time around. Remember, they threatened to fire gas missiles at the invasion force, but they never materialized, and it was too short a gap in between wars to have any real chance of developing a viable nuclear weapon. Maybe Iraq had some gas, but gas attacks are only really effective against civilan populations, an armored column breathes its own air. However, Saddam's internal position was precarious enough (He had to put down two revolutions in between 1992 and 2001, and unrest was *seething* that he couldn't be seen to his own people as knuckling under to American pressure.

Bush had a perfect target. And to be honest, if it was executed better, it probably would have worked as the Bush politios would have wanted. However, occupation is not something America is really good at, and we have the situation at present.

A little history, oh naive Americans. Putin was a member of the KGB, whose job it was to enforce a totalitarian state bent on subjugation of its own people and millions more under their yoke. Thanks to the determination and vision of America and it's allies (you know, the bad guys) the Soviets finally gave up, freeing those millions. Putin transitioned from the KGB to the current version of it and then began to climb the ladder. The collective loss of empire and prestige no doubt drives Putin nuts. He (and many Russians) want it back, and freedom stands in their way.

Ask a Pole, German, Bulgarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, Chzeck, Slovak, Byelorussian, Ukranian, Moldovan, Rumanian, Hungarian, etc how it felt to be part of the Soviet Empire - they will tell you there is no subsitute for the freedom they have today and they know how they got it. Most young Americans think the Berlin Wall is a band and most liberals think we made up the Cold War to help the defense budget.

Putin is Putin - he understands power and he understands Russians. He is willing to bet he can incrementally take back political freedoms and remain in power, or at least continue to run things if he does step down. Hopefully, we will keep that in focus as we deal with a country that is basically Indonesia with many thousands of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons...but who wants to be treated like the Soviet Union of old.

Speaking of beliefs...to say that a person who speaks their mind, no matter what opinion they may have, is a traitor is just plain foolish. We live in the country where our freedom of speech is protected by the constitution. You may have an opinion, and so may I, no matter how much you and I may disagree, we are Americans, and it is our right to speak our minds.

In fact, if you read the Declaration of Independence it states:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

We were founded on these ideals, which allow us to disagree and change our minds.
