I am nearly 37 years old, and am not ashamed to say, "I love Hello Kitty!" It's a throwback to my childhood. (Of course, I am also neither a man, nor a police officer!) So, now that this form of "punishment" has been abandoned, the Thai police force must have a surplus of said armbands.... How can I get one? LOL

Dear Ian, I do wonder what the Thai police force will do with the surplus of Hello Kitty armbands. It does seem like a silly punishment to make the officers wear these on their uniforms. But for all those people who are fans of Hello Kitty maybe you could send the supply of armbands to them. Laurel already asked if she could have one. They will be well loved. Peace to all!

I am a former American police officer who is married to a Female Thai police officer and we live in Bangkok. I have many times spoke to her about the conduct or actions of Thai policemen. I can not believe some of the stuff these guys get away with. I have seen policmen do nothing as someone was being assulted, insert an athoritative position over non-Thai's to extortion - which I was personally approached. If it wasn't for my wife being in the car and showing her police ID, there is no telling how much money I would have had to pay for a speeding charge which was false in the first place. Law Enforcement is a discipline that not every man/women is cut out to take on. However, it is a position in every society that is very much needed. I think that if the Thai police were paid better (so they wouldn't have to extort to SUPPORT their families)and made to take in service training courses on a frequent basis, we all might see the Thai police do a 360 degree turn for the better. I wish the Great Kingdom of Thailand's Police Force all the best in the future.

The armbands are just another version of the DUI license plates we use here in Ohio. The problem is that with the armbands, the Force would be displaying their errs to the people over whom they are supposed to be enforcing the law, and if there is a better way to encourage insolence to the police, I'd like to hear it. The humiliation tactic, while excellent in theory, is simlpe unfeasable when used in a position of authority, not because of it's impact (which would only increase) but because of the kickback -- which is unfortunate.

A better solution would be the institution of rewards (pay raises?) to the officers that perform their jobs sans corruption and without error. As for the armbands, the police should either sell them in order to raise money for themselves or for a charity (which, I admit, is les likely), or the armbands should be donated.

Best of luck to the Kingdom of Thailand in matters of their police force.

wait till you need one, then you'll appreciate that they have guns and badges. there are MANY citizen serving cops in the world. not every cop is corrupt. don't colour the picture all in one brushstroke! they don't get paid enough for what they do. and justin timberlake and tom cruise get millions for just entertaining, something that used to be 2nd class citizenry. we're paying the wrong scales to the wrong people. the millions should go to cops, firemen, and teachers, not preadolescent brats that stuff it up their nose or drink it down "oh the pressure!" they should try protecting kids and elders from crack addics, muggers and rapers and see how well they do under REAL pressure.

Hello Bill from Toledo and Neil from Lafayette. Thank you for pointing out to me that my compass reading was malfuctioning. I think I made my point, which is that in order to stop wrong doings by policemen, then we should pay them more and offer or mandate training that would better educate them in society. Believe me, I wore that badge for many years and it's a hard thing to do at times. Not only are you worried that the night goes by without anyone getting hurt; one is always thinking about their families and how they are going to pay the morgage next month. Please, I am not making excuses because I, as did all other policemen, made the choice to serve our communities in that capisity. As far as Thai policemen, if you only knew what the guys were making a month, you would probably not see them as bad people for doing some of the things that they do just to pocket a few extra dollars (baht). Anyway, thanks for pointing out my 360 comment because you guys are absolutly right - they would be right back where they started.

Oh yeh! how about the Thai immigration officers at the bridge crossing to Laos. I went to visit Laos in last October of 2006 and I handed my passport and the Immigration form but somehow I left one spot blank. When he look at it once and pushed it back to me without saying anything so I though he was done so I took it back and he started yelling at me. I responded back with a question in Thai but he answered me back in English because he saw my passport was from America. Not knowing what was wrong, I calmly asked him back in English as what was wrong? and he just simply yelled "FILL IT" Oh! my god! I have never seen any government official being so mean like that in my life. Talk about being corrupted I saw some other people handed him a $5 bill and he was quietly and quickly stamp approved. I think all Thai police expected people to supposed to just bribe them every time.
