Inshallah the work of Siraj-ud-din and others like him will endure and overcome the forces of darkness and evil. May God protect him and others like him to make sure civilized societies can emerge and become free from fear, healthy and prosperous. I would like to see the U5MR( under age 5 mortality rate to drop substantially, and there is supporting community for education of girl children to high school at least) These changes will have really salutary effects on the community as a whole. Naturally arable land and portable water, immunization programs will be necessary and will require substantial local sweat equity and major contributions from the G-20 nations. As the U5MR drops and girls education rises the TFR (fertility rate per lifetime of a woman will drop preferably closer to 2-3 9 this would be close to the NRR of 2.2- natural replacement rate) over time which will in turn reduce the youth bulge-percentage of youth below 25 especially the ratio of this group to the above 50 population. Unless the TFR drops closer to 3 or 2.5 the risk of the youth bulge exploding into anomic anarchy will remain endemic in a community. Access to schools that are not Madrassas will be major factor in the stabilization of a community and its future economic viability and social harmony.

Dear Solon,
Pakistan and Afganistan both are and used to be quite conservative societies. Girls did not willy nilly go and do things that are taken forgranted in the west or in non islamic countries but they were also not killed willy nilly for dancing or singing or going to school until these dour bastards from Taliban started enforcing a joyless version of islam in these lands.

There is a very poignent scene in a movie called "The Kite Runner". One of the protagonits says - The Taliban don't let humans be humans.

That is the tragedy. Because even conservative societies have their own way of celebrating and expressing joy. Women in those conservative societies may not have all the freedoms women have elsewhere but they are not always treated like animals either. Both Pakistan and Afganistan used to have societies, atleast in the urban centers where women were substantially more freer than women in, say, Saudi Arabia. That is, until the Wahabbis and then the Taliban rolled into these lands like black plague.

Even in tribal pakistan/afganistan, killing of a girl for alleged impropriety is still an exception rather than a norm.

Its too bad it took a massacre within their village to get them up off their a55es and fighting the Taliban. If they would have stepped up when the Taliban began setting up camp in their area and nipped it in the bud, 40 of their fellow villagers would still be alive. Maybe they can be an inspiration to other villages and get a pro-active resistance to the Taliban going, before other villages suffer the same fate. The fact that they are fighting the Taliban is great, that its a retribution/revenge thing kinda dampens the spirit of what they're doing. Next step for you, the international media, would be to bring to the world's attention the vile and despicable nature of our nation's supposed leaders, who have been passing the buck to each other for generations in order to keep it within the family (reminds me of post WW1 Europe, all the bloody kings were cousins and grandkids and what not of each other. anyways).

Here is the other side of the story that nobody is discussing or seriously thinking about

Pakistani military action and the way they handled it as far as displaced folks (in millions) is deplorable at best.
Remember 80's mujahadin (so called muslim hired fighters to fight russians) produced an exodus of people who later converted to taliban in the 90's when abondened and left unattended. Now you have another generation of displaced people who are for the most part abondened by pakistani govt and military. Now you are looking at another frankestien monster coming to be born in another 10 years, well actually may be even less even if the taliban gone. Pakistani military/govt will just use these people to make another monster and then fight them with foreign aid and the whole cycle will be repeated all over again. Already the lashkars(Sirajuddin and company) are being made by pakistani army who will enroll these displaced people when they go back to make a new taliban like militia. As long as this mentality will continue this problem will not go away.

My thoughts and prayers are out to Sirajuddin, Akhtar Khan and Niaz Wali, and all the peoples of Pakistan, Afganistan etc where there is a growing and strong will to oust the criminal thugs like the Taliban and restore peace to their land. These 3 individuals and their countrymen that are with them are at least taking the necessary first steps toward a life of peace and true freedom. I hope our US Generals and President Obama are helping with as much support as possible. They need food, shelter, medicine etc, and we need to help them out. The fleeing enemy has endless resources including aircraft that we need to shoot out of the air. I hope the Governments realize that DURING THE FIGHTING AND after all the fighting and the extremists are gone, They need to provide these villages with basic service. I.E. money for schools,electricity,food,jobs etc etc. Money for thier infarastructure. Fix any collaterall damage as the result of the fighting.
