The Chinese people shouldn't get jealous over what the Persian people have. This election was a farce designed to pacify an oppressed population. The election was basically a beauty contest between 4 men who were hand picked by the Islamo-fascist dictatorship that controls Iran. And they were running for a post that is mainly ceremonial. No matter who is installed as president the regime will still be exporting terrorism, abusing it's citizens and racing to build nukes in order to threaten and possibly incinerate other nations. Yes the Chinese people should demand freedom and democracy like their counterparts in Iran. But it would be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire to use the radical Islamic theocracy as their role model.

I have my prediction as what is going to happen within the next sixty days in Iran.
Mr. Rafsanjani is the chairman of the 86 members of Assembly of Experts who have the responsibility to watch, dismiss and select the supreme leader. I predict that Ayatollah Khamenei will not change his mind for either total vote counts or supporting a new election (This happened already as predicted. Ayatollah Rafsanjani will call an emergency meeting of Assembly of Experts and with majority vote Ayatollah Khamenei will be removed and Ayatollah Rafsanjani will become the new Supreme Leader. He will announce a new election and Mr. Mousavi with the help of Ayatollah Khatami will become the new president.

I am white and have lived in China for 6 years. The Chinese SHOULD be jealous of what the Iranians have. If I stood in Tianmen for 15 minutes - just stood there, a soldier would come over and tell me to move. If I went to an internet cafe to get online, I had to show my passport, they had to take a photo and there was a police officer 24/7(this started in 2006). The authoritarian government spills over into other areas of life. In the middle of my Mandarin class, I felt the call of nature. I left quietly and returned 5 minutes later. On my return, the teacher yelled at me for 5 minutes for causing her to lose her face because I did not ask permission first(I am 30 years old). At McDonald's, I saw an old lady ask for 3 sugars and instead of 3 sugars she got a long argument about 2 sugars is the rule. On TV, you often see adult parents hitting their adult children. Everything is cheap in China and the cheapest thing is human life. Taiwan? Slowly(very slowly) they are progressing.

At 65 years old, it’s sad to me that the beginning of the 21 century is no better than the beginning of the 20th century. You'd think our elected officials around the world would realize by now that modern warfare leaved few winners, just a lot of death, destruction, misery and hatred behind it. Having nukes makes it even worse. It’s like having a gun with one bullet. Once you fire it, there is nothing left. The principal of MAD is still alive and well and we will be lucky to have a world to survive in, let alone a country. The frightening specter of bio weapons is even more alarming. There had to be a better way, unless all these lunatics want all of us dead. In that case, human being will at last stopping killing other human beings in the name of something. Sadder still is the fact that these leaders will no more listen to the voice of reason than those at the beginning of the 20th century did.

From my vast experience, the Chinese are pretty clueless about democracy and "freedom". They will ask you what freedoms to Americans have that the Chinese don't have. I tell them to go on the Television and say something bad about your government. You can't do it, it's not allowed. China still has the left over mentality of a third world country, which in many respects it still is.

What is happening in Iran today is a continuation of events which began with the fall of the Shah in the early 80's.

The Iranian people like many others before them (Russia, Cuba, etc.), have come to realize that revolutions are only the first step. They are not a final solution particularly when you trade one dictator for another.

As a result the revolution has become a slow moving evolution, and the end result may take a while longer to realize.

Rest assured a different future is coming for this country with enormous potential and a huge well educated middle class.

NOTE: Many of those now entering power were educated compliments of a democratic west. Finally, the next generation has been enlightened by events via the internet.

Momentum has shifted once again, and it will be more difficult than ever to stop what has already begun!

I disagree with TJC. To me this is reminessant of the marches of the 60s when people of all backgrounds walked in opposition to our own coutries governmental crackdown on the black population. People of all races stood together with the black community demanding that our country acknowledge the rights of all individuals regardles of race. It's even more special today because of Juneteenth. BTW, I'm not a black man. I'm a jew who married a nice hispanic girl and have a wonderful marriage over 18 years. I've spent my life around the world defending my county. I've always looked for the best in all places I go and have made freinds in every culture, including moslem nations. Give these people the chance to make a change for the better. If they can get their government to listen. That is always a step forward. If the Iranian government cracks down to destroy this peaceful demonstration, the people will rise up and so will the rest of the world.
Time for us to be more hopeful and less pragmatic.

Seriously if the Chinese want to rebel. They would have. As a a chinese person born and raised in Canada who ahs been to china many times, i know it well. Most people are happy with the way China is becoming more powerful. In general life is improving for most Chinese citizens. When this double digit growth stops, people will become more discontent and may rebel. The stuff that western media records are the protests involving 5,000 people or the 4 main dissenters. Out of a population of 1.3 Billion People they are the minority. If you look at what is happening in Vancouver, Canada where they are kicking the poor out of their houses to make way for the Olympic Village. (the original plan was to provide low income housing after the olympics, but that has been scratched due to costs) I didn't know about this. The canadian media never reports on the multiple protests that happen in Vancouver. I only found out about this by searching the Internet. I would say the Canadian Media and the American Media are just as biased and patriotic about their country as China is. The Western Media is focusing on every minor event that shows disent among the population when really if you check out the population the number of protesters are really small. The vast majority of people are happy with the Current China. Chinese youth are not being brainwashed (i've gone to school there). And today's China is much better than the situation China was in in the 1960s, 1910-49 and during the Opium War).

I just don't understand the madness. Why do so many leaders want control of the minds of their people? Religious or not, it is just sick to want that kind of control. My heart goes out to those people who will never be allowed to achieve all that they are capable of achieving because of leaders who are quite obviously cowards. They always want to blame the U.S. for their problems. They are like children blaming someone else for the trouble that they have caused. I agree with Obama in saying that we need to stay out of this. Yes, it is troubling but if the people want change let them bring it about. We do not need to police the world. We need to get this country straightened out first. President Obama said what needed to be said while in Cairo. I had several friends in college from Iran during the 70s. They were wonderful people who loved our way of life. They dreaded the thought of returning to Iran. The only reason that they wanted to return was to visit their parents who were telling them never to return. Thank God that we can vote in and out who we please. Too bad that the people of Iran have to deal with someone like Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who has ULTIMATE power and someone like Ahmadinejad who is ready to cut off the hands of those responsible for the downfall of their economy. Everyone is brainwashed in more than one way. No one is perfect.... U.S. forien pollicy doesn't even reflect the views of the party who ellected the president half the time. It mostly reflects the whims and desires of the poloticians and is encouraged by interest groups(media conglamorations not excluded :) )

This is in response to Mano Bakh. I watched his interviews on the website excapingislam.com and was surprised that just because there are some mullahs (he talks about) misleading people about Islam he has decided to completely give up on the religion of his mother. From a rational perspective I would expect hime to show love for his mother by keeping the true Islam in his life as she taught him rather than be a reactionary and go aginst the faith and beleif and teachings of his mother. It kills me when Americans label legitimate resistant to occupation, terrorism. I think those who do such should concentrate more on ending terrorism and abolishing it in our homeland. Even if Ayatollah Rafsanjani becomes the new Supreme Leader, and Mr. Mousavi becomes the new President of Iran, how much safer will all of us be? Won't it still be an Islamic Republic, a religious dictatorship? Will they institute a "kinder, more gentle" religious dictatorship?

On that note, how much more freedom will the Iranian people have under two "new" leaders? What do we mean by "freedom" under a relgious dictatorship? What kind of freedom do the young people of Iran want? I'm all for freedom (whatever that means at any given time, and in any given country), but take a look at U.S. culture and ask yourself if Iranians want freedom a la current Americana style?

Guess this means freedom for women to parade around shopping malls with their boobs hanging out, lots of tatoos, navels on display, and best of all, FAT. Add to this couples necking in public and lots of ear, nose, and tongue rings, and future generations of Iranians will have all the freedom they want. Right?
The question is always: What kind of freedom do people really want wherever they live?

That is ridiculous. There is no comparison between situation of the protests of unarmed citizen in Iran,and the natives of Oka. The protestors of Iran are justly demanding a recount of their votes, against the wishes of a regime that has demonstrated the will to torture and kill its enemies. The natives at Oka, who were armed with assault rifles and guns, were illegally blocking a road in protest over some disputed land that was slated for development. In the process of the conflict,they killed a Quebec police officer. Afterwards, the Canadian Armed forces were sent to confront the situation, there was no fighting after that. The Natives live in Canada, a country that values human rights with citizens who feel guilty over the suffering of natives in its past. The protestors of Iran are defending the essence of democracy in Iran, the natives were (in effect) demanding property or money. The protesters of Iran are exhibiting some of the greatest elements of the human spirit. The natives were exhibiting something else.
