Hi Richard! Excellent Reporting as Always! The speech by President Obama certainly was vital to sending a great message of peace to the Muslim World and it seemed to generate a positive response from many people in the Arab World. President Obama used the right words in the speech to not be offensive and it came across very well. Time will tell as to what the outcome will be for the many coutries in that region. Hopefully, peace will be upon all people of the Middle East. A vital first step. It was terribel to learn three soldiers had perished in a roadside bomb. I wish all these terror groups did not exist. I listened to Sean Hannity rail against the religiosity of this speech, claiming Obama is decidedly secular in the USA. Obviously, only a man who has resided in a Muslim country and who knows Muslim culture would be wise enough to include those references to Abraham,"Holy" Quran etc. As Nixon opened dialogue and trade with China, it is my hope that the same will be done in the Middle East. Contact will bring understanding. Obama was nothing short of brilliant and we should be proud of his efforts.

Barack Obama is attempting to save the West from centuries of arrogance and domination which have put it on a collusion course with a world that is assessing the damages brought upon them by the West's view of its place in the world. And Republicans such as Romney, Limbaugh, Cheney and the like are unable to realize this. The meaning of this speech, its impact on the minds of Arabs and Muslims could only be positive. Now, the world waits for them too to abandon violence, negativism as a way of dealing with the West and other peoples that chose not to be muslim or are not "people of the book". Richard Engel has just done a very fine analysis of this speech on minds in those parts of the globe. May peace be upon Him! America needs more reporters like him to educate the public.

Having just been in Egypt, I know that its people have great hopes and are enthusiastic about Obama. He did not disappoint them. I can only applaud President Obama's sensitivity and insights. He directed his speech writers very well and created an opening not only for America but for the future of teh region. While action must follow the rhetoric, if the speech helped change mainstreem Muslims' attitudes towards America much of the support structure terrorists now enjoy will be weakened. That in turn will improve America's security.

An excellent article that highlights and explains an excellent speech. I am born and raised in the USA but I work for a company that has me travelling to the Middle East often. There are a lot of cultural ignorances that we suffer from. And it is due to continued lack of understanding (and in some cases, the person's own stupidity) on our part. I simply cannot wait for the hate-mongers and evil bloggers who have venom to spew to respond to this.

At least one person has a clue. Clearly Obama is uneducated in this area or was lying. Historically Islam was the preminet power in the world for centuries. Most in the West do not realize the Crusades were the result of hundred of years of Muslim persecution. With this power did not come wisdom. Scientifically they captured ideas; but, did not create them. They did not even create the concept of "Arabic" numerals.
Concerning Obama use of language, you have to be kidding. Everything you stated is something my fourth grader knows. It appears your readers are uneducated in basic history and knowledge.

Dear Richard,

I don't think there was a single sentence in that speech that hadn't been specially vetted and crafted for the intended audience. I think our new president is a pretty shrewd and savvy guy. It was a good speech, a thorough speech, but not an awe-inspiring one, in my opinion. And there was much less applause from the gathered audience than I anticipated. Is that typical? An act of deference? Or was it a barometer of the room?

Thanks for your dedication to our troops in Afghanistan. They're easy to love, aren't they? I've been sending packages in care of Cpt. Jimmy Howell and Cpl. Josh Adams, because of your reports. I think some of the guys were supposed to have rotated out by now. I just have to say that so much of the reporting coming out of the Korengal is outstanding, not to mention the photography! My favorite photo so far is of a Viper Co. soldier at FB Restrepo, lifting a large bag of M&Ms toward the sky in exultation. The joy is obvious; the image is priceless.... Congrats to you and your team on the Peabody.

He is taking over private businesses with tax payer money , he has increased unemployment to hightest since Carter years, and I could go on about him ranting and raving about not having any lobbyist on staff and about 40% of hih key people were lobbyist and if not blobbyist then tax cheats. We have new CAFE standards that will cut the use of gasoline. This is great but did the BO people think og the loss of tax revenue? Were looking at over a trillion in fed tax and only heaven knows what the states will lose, plus the cost of the cars will increase by 1300 dollars , what a deal. He happened to highlight Muslim contributions between the 7th century and now: ....the Compass, Algebra, Pens, Printing, Medical discoveries...were acheivements in fields that had their start in ancient times...see below (from Wikipedia):

You're collective historical knowledge leaves much to be desired. In fact, Islam DID invent Algebra. In general, they WERE relatively tolerant (though not always so) of other religions; almost always more so than Christians were toward them (the crusaders were, in general, horrifically brutal, conducting mass slaughter of both Muslims and Jews during the various sackings of towns in Palestine). Islamic tolerance was in fact one reason why they had such a flourishing of knowledge in the 10th and 11th centuries as it provided a venue for Muslims, Jews, and Christians to congregate and learn from each other. In fact, the medieval European renaissance (12th and 13th centuries) could not have happened without the ability of Europeans to travel in safety to Muslim cities in Iberia where they picked up so much Islamic learning. Have you ever heard of Avicenna? Averroes? Al-Khawarizmi?

For a number of centuries, the combined scientific and philosophic knowledge developed and held by Islam dwarfed that of Europe. Only in the 13th century did Christian Europe finally meet and begin to surpass the collective knowledge of Islam.

For what it's worth, I have a Master's degree in medieval history and finished first in my class.

I'm interested to know which things you believe Obama was lying about.

You seem to forget that the budget and the spending that makes up the budget was started under our last president. Obama may not be cutting spending or getting the deficit under control, but the problem is not tied to his administration alone. North Korea is thumbing their nose at the world, not just the US and honestly, there isn't much save another war that we can do to stop them. Bush tried to ignore them and sanction them back into the dark ages and it didn't work. Should we continue with a policy that obviously failed, I mean if it was working so well they wouldn't have the means to test more weapons and build new platforms. Nice article, nice speech but what does anyone expect from this or future efforts? Peace in the Middle East? An end to Muslim zealot terrorisim?

The Arab leaders, any Arab leader to take a a real, legitimate stand against fellow Muslims that are doing the one thing, pretty much the only thing, that guarantees a place in Muslim heaven/paradise - martyrering themselves by killing the infidels (any human outside their one true and only religion)?

A Muslim "change of heart" toward the West?

Maybe they will like us more and modify oil costs?

Their holy book, their whole and absolute religon from cradle to grave teaches/promotes a single focus -now maybe among the 1.6B, "only" 100M openly HATE/terrorize and martyer themsleves but the other 1.5B believe what the aealots are doing is ok, it is right according to thier religion and laws.

Unfortunately, in our lifetimes, no matter how culturally sensitive, wise, loving, giving, diplomatic, etc Obama or any US president ever is, there will NEVER be a significant change in the Muslim world or among Arab leaders - NEVER. They have war'ed among themselves and with Christians and Jews for over a 1000 years and the rich zealots among them are sitting in caves or across the dinner table from Obama, planning the next "message" they can send the West or Isreal and folks, hate so much to say this but we WILL see the Muslims launch or plant bombs that will make 9/11 look like a tiny blip on the disaster scale.

God Bless Obama for trying diplomacy and lets all continue to pray for peace! God Bless G W Bush for taking a bullish "warmonger" stand and rattling/using a BIG saber - at least his team got Osama on the run and there were actually some Muslims/Arab leaders afraid of what we would do to retaliate if "they"/the zealots screwed with us again.

Now it is wait and see. Honestly our expectations(no matter how smart, charasmatic, etc, Obama is) should be low when it comes to CHANGE, real honest change from the 1.6B Muslims and their leaders around the world.

We can keep hope alive and pray but absolutely watch our backs in the process.

For the conservatives on foreign affairs: Other than siding with one group over the other and labeling other groups as "The Axis of Evil", start presenting solutions that show that your party is truly respectful and is only seeking the best from humankind. Also, admit when you are not all-knowing and have done wrong. Don't assume that Amreica has every solution, but know that our heart is always in the right place.

You lost the election because your ideas and record, especially on the economic front, failed miserably. So much so that you have boxed yourselves into beliefs that are nothing more than the previous failed ideas.

You do such a fine job, Richard. I have followed you since you were briefly with ABC. Yes. I have one observation to make. Well maybe more. In interviews with everyday people in Muslim countries, many reporters asked them what the wanted or expected from President Obama's speech, and generally from the United States.

The one common thread I found in many answers, was their too high expectation that Obama and America should or could resolve their problems. Yet,so much of what is wrong lies within their own power to correct. So much is internal to these countries. He is our President. There is no doubt President Obama has been repairing or attempting to repair the mess the Bush Administration caused. You're right. Bush did a lot to help alleviate the AIDS crisis in Africa. How sad that this is overshadowed by the ruinous policies of his administration in so many other areas of the international arena.

Bush failed in the Middle East. President Clinton spent the final days, in fact, the final hours of his presidency attempting to broker some kind of deal between Israel and the Palestinians. On January 20, 2001, George Bush deliberately turned his back on all that and walked away. He had no foreign policy, just a crude notion of how he would be different from his father. He simply took the Cheney Group's foreign policy papers, and made it the template for his plan in that region of the world. So, President Obama is cleaning up messes. But the Arab Street must realistically look at what they need to do now. The reaction to the speech is that they want to see actions not words. Well, so do the Americans. We want to see actions from the Israelis and the Arabs that demonstrate their own commitment to resolving the problems. Shame on them.

I see many have missed the point of this, and many of Barack's speeches and philosophy. We all have our convictions and our beliefs. Thank God/Allah/Moses/L Ron Hubbard/Mother Goose, whoever floats your boat, that we live in a society where we are entitled to still share those opinions and learn some things from each other. The problems often begin when our convictions blind us to the notion that others may have opposing, but nonetheless, as resolute, beliefs in their convictions. Wouldn't it make sense then to try approaches/solutions based on areas where we can find some commonality and progress? We have tried things the other way for so long. What does it really accomplish? Much is made about one side winning a war. It seems tho, the "winning" always comes with the peace. Who is to say that the cold war, for instance, wouldn't have ended sooner, or with a much more clear result without the Nuclear build up? Look what that build up has wrought today? Does anyone think that we can just scare or blow up N. Korea or Iran without some type of serious consequence to our nation? If not, what is the solution? Will tough rhetoric and blame make the rest of the world see our vision as the prudent one? Can we fix this on our own? Just as violent, hateful actions of today, while in the name of security, strength, et al, and maybe even with some temporary benefits, may seemed to be justified, make no mistake, there has been and will be consequences and more somewhere down the road. Always is. Of course no speech is going to make any madmen or terrorist with political, economic or religiuos agendas lay down their arms. Hell, we can't even stop them in our own country or Mexico. But if we can isolate more and more this type of bigotry, hate, and intolerance, maybe, just maybe, we can do something of lasting importance. Isn't it worth a try? Why is it our "mistake" to move forward with policies that protect the country as Bush did? Why does this President feel compelled to apologize to the world and kiss the ass of the collective Muslim wolrd? Why do our "diplomats" feel compelled to bow down to these little depsotish punks in their futlie attempts to "negotiate" or "win their hearts and minds" when history is replete with examples if the failure (Vietnam anyone?) of this very approach? Why do our "leaders" feel bound to seek the world's consensus or permission to move forward in our own national best interests when Russia, China, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, et al, blatanly do not and further thumb their noses up in our direction when we attempt to "engage" them in a dialogue? Bush knew that for such a vast majority of these nations and cultures, when one "negotiates" successfully, it is through a position of strength. When you "open a dialogue" in the manner of Carter, Chamerlain (from England in WWII) and Obama (from a position of percieved weakness in the eyes of their counterpart), you have ceeded your strengths and created a position of strength for your adversary, thus a position of weakness for yourself. That's how Chamberlain blew it for England in WWII, it's how Carter blew it for the U.S in the Iran Hostage Crisis and it's how Obama will blow it for us now. Look to the manner in which we achieved victory in WWII and look at how Reagan and Thatcher tore down the Iron Curtain. We will soon become the laughing stock of the world again, just like during the Carter years. Long live the politically correct, United Socialist States of America after the Obamanation of our once great country. Reagan and our founding fathers are rolling in their graves.

I will say I'm impressed by the SPEECH WRITER who wrote the speech... and let's all take a moment from appluading Obama and be clear that it was a writter and not Obama who did write this speach... It was a very well worded address.

That said, the simple fact that one would need to take such exacting steps to avoid offense illustrates exactly the problem with the overly zealous Muslim majority. Religion ought not be a boundary among men but rather a bridge and the majority of Muslims work very hard to keep that bridge blocked off to all but other Muslims.

Perhaps one day, people will rise above susperstition and communicate on the issues which we face today instead of those present in a 2000 year-old fairy tale.

I find interesting your condemnation of the religious right in America, and yet you are silent on the religious fundamentalism (i.e. adherence to the literal teachings of the Qur’an) rife in many Muslim countries, regardless of geographic location.

It may interest you to know that apostates from Islam fear for their lives in Muslim countries, whereas, say, converts from Christianity are not in fear in Western countries.

Indeed, such converts, or plain atheists, are lionized and free to speak about whatever issue comes to their mind. Such dissent and critique of religion, like Islam, is not tolerated in Muslim countries and threatened with death and imprisonment. These threats are also acted upon. I would also add that such treatment of apostates can be traced explicitly to the Prophet Muhammad commanding that all who abandon Islam must be put to the sword.

Dear Richard: All I heard yesterday was One speech cannot change peoples opinions of things. Well, I was so pleasantly surprised this morning when my co-worker who comes from Iran walked in the door. She said her Mother called her last night from Iran.Her Mother said that her Father had listened to President Obama's speech and was brought to tears. That she herself had been so moved by his references to the Holy Quran, and that she now had hope that things might move forward in the Middle East peace process. She even told my co-worker that young Iran's who make up 65 per cent of the population might just be able to defeat Ahmadinejad because Obama's speech inspired change. As an American Jew, I am very disappointed in President Obama thinking there needs to be an "even-handed" approach to the Israeli-Palestinian issue. The World press has painted the PLO and Palestinians as "those poor people" when in fact they have been the aggressors, have hid behind children, and terrorized Israel. The Arabs' one-note theme is to destroy Israel and throw the Jews into the sea. Doesn't President Obama read history? Every time the Israeli's are forced to give land for "peace" there is no peace. Every time the Israeli's want dialogue, they are met with calls for their distruction. every time the talk of a "two state" solution to the conflict rears its ugly head, the Israeli's must make sacrifices, i.e., call a halt to building new settlements and the Palestinians are forced to give nothing to the peace process. But, the cogent question becomes rhetorical: "When in the history of any battle has the victor given land back he has won on the battlefield?" Answer: Only Israel. And, why is Israel called an "occupying power" and the land Israel won fair and square called the "occupied lands"? I hope Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Neyanyahu does NOT BUCKLE to anti-Israel rhetoric coming from the secretary of state's office in the form of Suha Arafat kissing Hillary Clinton as well as well as the White House in the form of President Obama even though he sent a world-wide message to the Holocaust deniers that the Nazi's killed 6,000,000 Jews during WWII in his Cairo speech and met with the World's Conscience, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, at Buchenwald.

you all should read some books on Lincoln (team of rivals, giants, cry freedom), obviously this president seems to have studied him pretty well.

What they say about Obama, is exactly what use to be said about Lincoln during his time... That he was untried, inexperience, apologetic, to soft on rebels on and on...

Yet they both hired rivals, incorporating some from the opposing party in their administration and sought peace and understanding wherever they turned...

...not that anyone can hold a candle to Lincoln, but current presidents could do a lot worse then adopting his techniques...

Hello Richard, everytime I hear one of your reports I admire you as your usually in a fairly hostile area and quite dangerous. Kabul used to be a nice town that we too have stayed in. But not now and there must be many safeguards you go through. Obamas presence alone has helped us so much already few people even realize. This is not a subjective opinion but direct observation of how he is received in places such as Kabul. Seeing is believing. Thanks again for bringing it all home to us.

I just finished reading your second book. I started out reading it one chapter a night before I went to sleep, but by the 5th chapter, I was hooked. I stayed up Saturday reading to 3am until I finally fell asleep from exhaustion. On Sunday, I read it straight through to the end. But I feel like the story is unfinished. So much has happened since that last chapter. I hope you are working on book number three (hint, hint).

I had not looked carefully at the language of the speech, this blog raised very good points about the usage of language and cultural norms.
Important and telling is that Al-Jazeera called the speech "deeply respectful" When trying to open lines of communication, one first has to show you have more than contempt for the other party. Pres. Obama is attempting to change the tone of the dialogue by taking a step back and approaching the muslim world on their terms. To do so is not to take a subservient or weakened position as some have proposed. He is showing the wisdom of someone who understands complexities of diplomatic relations.
I am a canadian who lives and works in the US. What I find is that many americans do not seem to be aware that one of the reasons citizens of other countries have such strong negative feelings towards the US is the attitude that the american way is the only valid choice and that little exists beyond the borders of the USA. I think of this as being america-centric. To be sure, there is much great and to be proud of here. But by approaching muslims by accomodating their language and signs of respect, the president is showing that americans are aware of other cultures and that he is willing to accept their norms instead of insisting on "his way or the highway".

hola, richard, the interesting thing about the roman catholic church and the christians is that before constantine of the byzantine empire became pope, the dogma had no guts. the apostles creed was introduced by constantine. and islam knows that the crusades were just an estate land grab ploy by the church for all of the landed crusaders that were going to die in the conflict, totally political. richard the lionheart was such a jerk that his mother, eleanor of aquitaine, had to pay the church big bucks when he died so that they wouldn't send his soul straight to hell. all i look for these days is peace on my own little doorstep, a respite from the world at large. whatever worries i have, i put those on my prayer altars. those issues are certainly nothing that i can personally do anything about . . . . . re: korengal, why is it called 'the valley of death'?
