Firstly, the Christians in lands such as Iraq where Moslems hold undisputed power have been persecuted and martyred for centuries---that is one reason why there are so few left in North Africa and most of the Middle East. It is a systemic pattern. Most Moslems are so deliberately blind (and they are deliberately blind to these situations) that they go into a state of denial when approached about such things and reactively start blithering about the Crusades and Western Imperialism and so on. At least that is the experience I have generally seen.

Secondly, the rest of the world--and this includes the Bushs and Obama and Europe and China--have shown a degree of indifference to these situations so as to constitute near complicity. Governments seem to be unwilling to risk offending the perpetrators. That is really sad.

Didn't the Iraqi Christians support the US invasion of Iraq? Then serves them right. A million Iraqis have died since the invasion, most of them Muslims. Why are the Christians special? Under Saddam Hussain, a secular leader, Christians had more security than the majority Shiite Muslims. They had high positions in Government, like the foreign minister, Tariq Aziz. They decided to throw that away when they supported the US invasion, maybe because they thought they would benefit even more under an occupying Christian army. At least the Iraqi Christians are getting asylum in Western countries at a greater rate than the fleeing Muslim Iraqis.

I want to thank Mr. Aspell for writing a story about a humanitarian travesty that is being overlooked by the media as a whole. When the Sundan government was torturing, kidnapping and killling Christians and animists in southern Sudan hardly anything was said, however when that same government turned on fellow Muslims in Darfur, then it become newsworthy.

The fact is Christians around the world are being tortured by Muslims, Hindus and other religions where they are a minority. I live in San Diego, and went to a Catholic elementary school with a number of Iraqi Christian families. In fact, the school's librarian was te mother of one of the girls in my class, and had a master's in library sciences which she got at the University of Baghdad in the pre-Saddam era.

They are good people. It's a shame that (like several generations of Americans from all over the world who came before them) these people's best hope for personal safety and freedom is to leave their country.

This is not surprising, although it is very sad. I would have hoped for better. It is obvious that people wishing to have power, abuse their own religion by using it as a reason to abuse others. Often we find that religion is just an excuse in the first place and that those seeking power over others only hold to the portions of religious practice that allow for violence, sexual and otherwise. Note how religion was used in the Bosnian conflicts, World War II Germany and Japan (the religion in Japan at the time saw their leader as God) and in Iran/Afghanistan/Pakistan, as well as the resolution to dividing India into the country of Pakistan for the Moslems and India for the Hindus but no real place for the minority Christians and other religious believers. As a Christian myself, not only traditional but what people today laughingly refer to as born again,(a requirement in Christianity by the way), it is easy to identify with the beset upon Christians in Sudan, India, Iran and Iraq among other places in the world. We must all also identify with anyone who is set upon by others in order to gain power or to drive them out. Obviously there are reasons not to want people that have proven themselves to individually be a threat to others such as child molesters, rapists and murderers in a neighborhood where they can set upon others. Again, these people seek power by using violence. Individual use of violence is not the answer against those that use violence either. It brings a heartfelt thanks to those that chose to make this the land of freedom of religion, speech and thought and to those that defend that fredom, even though they are forced to use violence to do so. The use of violence must be relegated to those trained for such and monitored by those that do not use it wrongly to avoid further brutaality than necessary.

This is a very sad story if it is factual. It is so hard to varify news and events in Iraq anymore. There are also the individuals that belong to the Sadam's group that would do anything to create problems between the Christian and Muslim comunities by treating people in this horroble way, inorder to creat further divisions between the comminities and to extract large sums of money from the victum. There are also the occasions where the individuals proclaime mistreatment by the hands of others so they can claim refugee status to enable them to be accepted as refugees by Western countries. I am not saying that this unfortunate young lady is making such a claim, but there are many instances where this happens every day. Christianity and Islam, as a faith and religion do not permit such actions and behaviours. This is certainly the work of those that want to prolong the misary and anguish of the inocent people of Iraq what ever religious group they may belong to.

I read so many items in MSNBC,Newsweek and just great reporters telling the stories that they find.
Out of all of them and I must read hundreds a week, this one tore my heart a part. I am a Christian woman,married now to a re-treaded pastor/counselor. I was raped 36 years ago in Macon Ga. by the Sheriff's brother. I could not report it for obvious reasons but I have never forgotten the sense or horror, aloneness and just plain fear. It wasn't until I married this dear husband of mine that I could really start to heal. Why aren't Christian woman getting together and doing something for these poor women? Why are they stuck in a place where they will recieve little to no help? Forget Gitmo and the CIA, in fact, as un-Chritian as it may sound,round some of these Muslim rapist and send them there for the same treatment they dished out. Have I gotten over it? NO! But I have had and do have people in my Christian family that I can reach out to.

Do a little research and you will find a handful of Christian Iraqis visited GWB at the White House just before the start of the second invasion of Iraqi soil by the US (the invasion's decision point and also numerous meeting beforehand). Pamphlets were distributed at the start of the invasion depicting GWB as a "savior" of the Iraqi Christian --air-dropped over Baghdad. Only viewable outside of the US were Arabic and Iraqi Arabic language websites put up by the US again depicting GWB and the US (mostly by Conservative Christians groups sponsoring Iraqi Christians) as a great defender of Iraqi Christian Values. You cannot blame the Iraqi Christians for their current fate --only GWB for failing to see (too much faith and not enough brains) what the eventual outcome has become. The acts of one selfish and arrogant American president (including Dick Cheney) may have ruined many lives for 100's of years to come. Patti is absolutely correct, God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. Unfortunately, that selfsame darkness is rapidly falling upon the face of America; especially, under the existing administration where every immoral act conceivable is supported and vocal Christians along with Christianity as a whole condemned as criminal, enforced through censorship and even deemed a bias hate crime for speaking out against homosexuality and other ungodly acts. However, one day every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. So, before ridiculing other countries for their atrocities against Christians let us first and foremost look to our own hearts and country.

Wow – not even sure how to respond to your comments, but someone has too, so I guess it’s me.

First, I pray that God will forgive you for the hatred in your heart and that you find yourself forgiving those that put it there....I’m a Christian, and had a Muslim neighbor in college and we discussed the similarities and differences of the faiths on several occasions, and I think it’s safe to say, that whether you worship Jehovah or Allah, having a heart like yours (filled with spite and hate) is going to buy you a one way ticket to the
lower realms of hell.

Second, as a Christian, I’ll pray for you and myself due to my next comment.

Third, since I’m far from perfect thus more than capable of sinning, I have to say that I really wish you could meet a friend of mine – it’s a SS-109, that would be a steel core 5.56mm NATO armor piercing round, and would be coming at you at a little more than 3000 feet per second.....you know, get to know him, eye to eye......

This article talked about how many Christians are being tortured, discriminated, and violated where the majority of individuals are Muslim. Well, in the United States, where the majority is Christian, individuals who practice Isam are violated, tortured, and discriminated against. Any person that understands social injustice understands that whereever you are at, if you are the minority, you will suffer injustice.
Muslims in the United States are accused of being terrorists. They are accused of being violent. Yes, there are few Muslims that are extremists, but not all. When talking about religion, all these things have occurred throughout history; fighting for land, trying to promote a certain religion. We had the Crusades among many other holy or religious wars. Christians act so innocent, stating that they haven't fought, that they have never forced their religion on a certain area or country. Well, how did Christianity spread in the early times. Through wars, killing people, etc.
Altohugh all religions practice peace; in most religions, there are always extremist; Christianity, Islam, Judiasm.
Since religion was founded, there has not been peace. Going back to the early romans, the egyptians, the nomads. No peace. Why do we think this is going to change?
I pray for all that have endured pain and suffering because of religion; however, I am a realist, there will never be peace. Too many different battles between religion, politics, social classes, ethnic groups, minorities and majorities. However, what I do know is that all this has occurred since the beginning of time.
In all Holy books, they talk about war, slaves, oppression of the minority group of the groups that don't believe in their religion. Including Christianity and Islam.

I fully understand how fear and abuse can be used to convert someone to Islam. I was beaten and threatened for two years by my peace-loving devout Muslim husband who permitted me to practice my Christian faith for eight years until my children started to pray with me. The Holy Koran, which I read, doesn't preach violance, so where is this coming from? People who aren't secure in their faith and who feel threatened by anyone of another faith. I am free from my persecutor and I pray for those Christians in the Middle East who are becoming martyrs for their faith. Christ be with them.

This is in response to that so called "Assyrian" from Chicago, IL. You are NOT Assyrian at all because if you were then those ridiculous comments would not have been written. No Assyrian Christian would ever say such things! All I can say is that only God can help us in this uncivilized, evil and un-Godly world which we live in now. It's so sad that no one is paying any attention to the Christians of Iraq, one of the first people who converted to Christianity. I guess being a persecuted Christian doesn't bring any ratings to the news channels, hence no coverage of the violence and inhumane acts towards them. Hi Tom, here you are a gain writing a story about human right and human justice in this world !!! I have been following up with your reporting in the last 6 years about the war in Iraq. I must thank you and thank NBC news for providing us with the facts and information regarding people suffering from the different parts of this world. Christians in Iraq are clever and hard workers, they lived in that land before the Arabs and Islam. They always lived in peace and honesty with other people. They are not politicians and never challanged any person, nor compete with others seeking head positions in the country. Now they have a very difficult life in Iraq just because they are Christians minority living in their own homeland. Many of them have left to another country and many are still waiting and many have been killed or kidnapped. Similar to what happend to Germany jews some 67 years ago. It is hard for an eldery christians living in Iraq to leave or travel any where, they will die there after all the good things they have done for their own country. A story like Tom Aspell story is a real one, it is about human injustice in this world ... Thank you Tom, for holding up the sord of your pen with your hand while riding on the horse of the truth for every person who is in need to let the world here his cry... and to let the good people of this world to listen and cry with him, despite his religion or his color. I dont think Christians should leave the area. The middle east is a sacred area to Christians as well as Muslims. I would never let anyone drive me out of my home. I think they should fight back to protect their place in society or die trying. Christians have been persecuted since the religeon began and will be until the last days. This is no reason to become a refugee from your own home. I say, stand up for what you believe and fight those who would silence you.

This is insane. I see people looking for any excuse to blame the problems of the world on people they disagree with. Conservatives blame liberals, muslims blame christians, christians blame democrats and so on. Until we learn to respect those we disagree with and stop forcing our beliefs on others, we will never truly prosper as a nation or as a human race. We need to learn to live with those we dislike, because we can't ban religion or political parties. The world would be a better place if we could, but things just dont work that way.
