Thanks for this article. It tells me that the real pandemic worldwide is hypocrisy. Here we have a Muslim country that "hosts" 300,000 pigs. Why is that? Then we have a poor man who has a family much too large for a country that is way overpopulated in its metropolitan areas. Except for the Nile River, most of the rest of the country (desert) cannot sustain or feed a large population. With that said, who does Mr. Sayed sell his pigs to? Does he sell them to restaurants that cater to "infidel" tourists? Another thing that is apparent from listening to Mr. Sayed is that the Egyptian government does not do much for poverty stricken people. There must be millions of them in Egypt. Is this the will of God that millions wallow in poverty and a few live in luxury? What about that pillar of charity advocated by Islam? The same people probably do not have enough clean water to drink or wash with. Sounds like they have a garbage collection problem also. Do 300,000 pigs eat garbage? Would love to hear from someone in Egypt on this. For that matter the United States and some other countries need to consider getting rid of pigs anyway, not because of flu but because they are a filthy animal. That makes me a hypocrite for eating bacon and eggs.

As an Egyptian, I am also amazed, but not by the stupidity of the Egyptian government. I am amazed by the well intentioned thinking of the of the comments, and, to a larger extent, by the ignorance of their authors.
Egypt is not exclusively Muslim, it holds a minority of Chistians too, who are allowed to eat "unholly" food. In fact most pig farmers are Christian. This decision to kill all the pigs is not stupid at all. It is a thinly veiled attempt to hurt the minority as much as possible. This is yet another way you can be harrassed if you are a Christian in Egypt. I guess I'll take that over a suicide bomb.
Let' stop assuming good faith from the Egyptian government. The swine flu was the next best thing it was waiting for, the first being Crusader's desease or Jesus' flu.

This just in from competent medical authorities in my area. Swine influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses. According to a Medical Doctor (not VP Joe Biden), the most important action people can take to protect each other is to WASH THEIR HANDS. In addition: Swine flu viruses are not spread by food, and people do not become infected with swine flu by eating pork. Eating properly treated,handled and cooked pork products is safe. This is a medical opinion. Sounds reasonable to me. However, Muslims need not raise pigs even for non-Muslims. In fact, if swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs etc., then perhaps we should all consider becoming vegetarians. And remember that cattle get diseases also plus other animals. In that regard, there is a threat of contracting some sort of illness by eating the flesh of any one of a number of animals, well cooked or not. Again, we should consider becoming vegetarians of well washed and well cooked vegetables, to include fruits. So, with regard to hygiene, what is the Egyptian government doing to promote it? Besides the unnecesarry death of his income, they have been given false hope of being protected from the Swine Flu virus. The article said that the government sent someone to innoculate the 14 members of his family. Funny, THEIR IS NO INNOCULATION FOR THE SWINE FLU!
Again the craziness continues.
Look at how the WHO creates a fear when truly the only deaths were in Mexico and even the reports indicate that the number of cases per day is decreasing.
The one US death should not be on our books as the child was sick in Mexico and then came across to Texas just prior to its death.
If the WHO has an automatic threat level change for pending pandemic if more than one country has deaths this too is crazy.
Look at the numbers, nearly 9 million people in Mexico City and 20 to 200 deaths are counted due to this Swine Flu. Which is it 20, 100, 200. Most of the 3000 suspected cases are not even confirmed.
In California, Texas and New York we are blindly closing schools and having the 2 income parents figure a way to care for there kids while they work. Has any buddy figure how this rampant fear is now affecting those of us in the US. No deaths, all treateable. Over 36,000 die in the US due to the regular flu and complications caused by the flu and we never shutdown a school or government.
Hace we taken this too far? Is this so blown out of proportion by the media?
Can we get a world map of all of the cases of the regular flu for this season, yes from around the world and look at those numbers? Over 13,000 have dead in the US since January 2009.
What are we doing to stop these deaths?

I've only read through the first few comments.. so, here's a little insider perspective from an egyptian. It is ridiculous and utterly inexcusable, of course, that the government has ordered the slaughter of this huge swine population. There should be closer communication with reputable medical organizations and infection control programs. I believe the panic response may have stemmed from the fact that Egypt is among the countries stricken the hardest with the avian flu. We continue to lose lives to the flu, every day, and control measures seem to be greatly inefficient. So, I guess the government is working with a 'better safe than sorry' attitude.. only I think it's a sorry resolution, too.

As for swine breeding in muslim countries: It is true that muslims are not allowed to eat pork under the islamic jurisprudence, however, the islamic law is basically tolerant of the other religious groups that live alongside the muslims in any 'islamic' state. I quote islamic, because egypt is closer, in its governing system, to liberal systems, than to islamic ones. With the same notion, it is permissible for people, christian or muslim, to breed pigs for the purpose of being sold and eaten by non-muslims.

A final note, mainstream islam doesn't refer to non-muslims as 'infidels' anymore than christians do. This may oppose a media image propagated in the west. It is also good to be respectful to organizations and people who constitute countries and to make proper discrimination between a governmental decree and the entire country. Millions of people all over the world starve to death for one only one reason. Only because white pigs have outlawed thier traditional cannibalism.
During the neo-enlightenment of the last few years, surely scientists have realized by now that all meat is quite simply composed of the exact same atoms, be it human or otherwise.
Cruel laws that have no scientific basis that any loony liberal can point to, that starve congenital cannibal populations to death must be revoked now!!!

It's certainly sad for the family, but understand that this is a chance for politicians to take advantage of the situation. Pork is forbidden in Islam..even though tolerant any excuse is good (ring a bell?). Humans are the same everywhere, some have their hands tied other not..And when in panic, the will of the majority is putted first..
I imagine many Muslims or Jews were feeling even prouder to not eat pork. Some will say it's ignorance.. Other will say wisdom..
A good prevention (but at any cost?) is always better than a cure.
All my best wishes for the family.. Guys pork tastes good but not that great if I have to die from it..

This is an excellent order by Governoment,Eating Pigs is HARAM in ISLAM,A True Muslims cannot use Pig for his/her income.Islam is the Religion of Peace,Protection and most closest to human nature.The Things/Action which are dangrous for human life and society are Forbidden in Islam.So I think it is a good action and other Muslim and Non-Muslims should do the same.

Sure the government will compansate Mr. Sayed for his loss,but who will compansate people for the loss of their loved ones if an outbreake has happened because of the very unhyagenic way that is related to raising pigs.We know that so for there is no informations about any cases in Egypt,but if Godforbid this happened ,Egypt is a good soil to grow this virus and export it to the entire world.People that raise the pigs work as garbage collectors, and enter each street ,and each house in Egypt to collect garbage for the pigs(excuse me). Alot of people dont understand why they are killing the pigs.. Egypt 90% muslims arabs 10% Copts Christian .. Muslims dont raise Pigs the Christians do.

The goverment persecutes the christians and alot of muslims want Egypt to be a full muslim contry, now how do you ruin someones living with an excuse for the international community to not step in.. Hey guys. I'm an American student living in Cairo, Egypt and I'm surprised at the comments you all have been leaving. Certianly this is a stupid decision, but its not caused by ignorance or religion as many of you have been saying. The Mubarak government is corrupt but it is in no way becomeing more religious as a few comments suggest. Especially after the terrorist attack a few months ago (which was almost not reported back in the states) the government has been cracking down hard on Islam in the government - including banning religious affiliated parties from running in elections.
Secondly, pork may be haraam to Muslims, but that does not mean that they don't raise pigs. Smoking cigarettes is also haraam, but I guarentee you muslims do that here! There are also sizable minorities of Coptic christians who do a lot of work in industries like pork and alcohol so a mere 300,000 pigs in a country shouldn't be surprising.
But this problem is not caused by ignorance. No one in the governemtn is that stupid to think that killing pigs would prevent the flu from spreading here. No, someone is making a lot of money from this. Thats what we should be reporting on.

1- You need to know that in Egypt all pigs are raised eating garbage and that mainly occurs in Cairo and its Outskirts. (an efficient recycling method).
2- Egypt now is considered endemic for the Avian flu and if you have Swine flu+ Avian flu that would cause an epidemic. (Egyptian Economy has losses over 8 billion Egyptian pounds due to Avian flu in the poultry industry sector)
3-As a Muslim country we don't consume pork meat as much and its almost consumed by hotels (Tourists) and few Christian people (And I mean FEW).
4-The problem we will face after the slaughter of pigs would be the increase in the price of meat, chicken and fish. Besides, tons of garbage that were consumed by pigs should be burned.
5-The government should slaughter pigs and freeze the meat to be consumed later.

I believe that getting rid of pigs, especially in a country like Egypt, should have taken place a long time ago. The hygiene status of pig farms(if we could call them farms) is zero as they're literally raised on garbage. Getting rid of them has nothing to do with religion. I (as a vet) consider those pigs-raising places potential foci for spreading more dangerously modified diseases like flu, that has extreme ability to modify itself and pop out as a different hard to cure disease each time. A decision like that to be made, a number of highly qualified and educated people should be on agreement to make it, not waiting for some pig lovers' or anthropomorphic comments. Don't forget about a deadly disease was originally caused by pigs, when their offals were fed to cattle. This was called Mad Cow Disease, which had cost UK alone heaps to get rid of it.

what everybody who's commenting on this matter dont know that pigs in egypt dont live on farms,they are raised in locatins in the city very close to human population less than a mile away.They are also grown on garbage and waste,and mated with humans and other animals like donkeys cows and chickens.
The market demand on pork in Egypt is minimal (less than %10 of population is non muslims and half of them dont concider it as main source of food).
Because of all that the gvernment decided that all pigs will be slautered and owner will be compinsated.

Egypt inherited this stupidity from the Ottoman rule. I was recently in Cairo, after 25 years of being away. Things changed drastically there. The country is really running into chaos. Over population, inflation, unreasonably higher prices for everything, unemployment, tyranny, opression, loss of personal freedoms, are taking a toll on people. They see no hope in the future. They lost interest in being better. Same like communism. Tell me which civilized country in the world today mandates having your religious affiliation showing in your ID? People in charge in that coutnry are bunch of farmers who are unqualified to be in these positions. I was reading their personal profiles and none of them have post graduate education! none. Slaughtering the pigs is an execuse to make the Coptic Christian minority lives harder. Pork is cheaper than beef, and more affordable but muslims can't eat it. Destroying the pigs will make the country more "Holy" :) ya right!
