With that said, who does Mr. Sayed sell his pigs to? Does he sell them to restaurants that cater to "infidel" tourists? Another thing that is apparent from listening to Mr. Sayed is that the Egyptian government does not do much for poverty stricken people. There must be millions of them in Egypt. Is this the will of God that millions wallow in poverty and a few live in luxury? What about that pillar of charity advocated by Islam? The same people probably do not have enough clean water to drink or wash with. Sounds like they have a garbage collection problem also. Do 300,000 pigs eat garbage? Would love to hear from someone in Egypt on this. For that matter the United States and some other countries need to consider getting rid of pigs anyway, not because of flu but because they are a filthy animal. That makes me a hypocrite for eating bacon and eggs.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

And this is a government we have to consider when we go to the UN? They can't even make reasonably sound decisions concerning their own country but the rest of the world has to listen to them in the UN. Now we see the first problem with letting the UN make decisions that affect the world. Ignorant...

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

Because of basic ignorance of some people, maybe we should have started using the medical name for the disease from the begining.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

How is it that a family with memebers named Mohammed can raise pigs in a predominantly Moslem country?

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

This is SAD! The cause of these false beliefs is worth at least a modest effort to change.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

It is idiot morons like this government that spread the mis-information that winds up getting moree people killed because they don't follow common since and listen to people that know what they are talking about.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

COMPLETE IGNORANCE FROM THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT...HOW SAD!!!

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

MSNBC, why on earth would you show a picture like the one of the man holding the pig by his legs???? This strain of flu is no worse than any other strain. Yes there have been deaths, but there are always deaths during flu season. Those with weak(ened) immune systems and the young are particularly vulnerable, as are those in areas with poor sanitation. As the article states, this strain is named swine flu, but has not actually been found in any pigs. It is actually a hybrid of avian, swine and human virus. The government of Egypt does not take any chance. Its job is to protect its citizens from any disease that may appear on the scene. It happened several years ago when the chicken flu came into the international stage. secondly, the family that has been mentioned in the article feed the pigs and whatever they raise (chicken, goats, lambs, donkys, etc.) the garbage its members collect from the local streets. above all, pigs are filthy and dirty animals and are forbidden to be eaten in Islam, jeudism and christianity. The same family and others can support themselves by doing better works for the society. Note that their chicken are eating garbage they collect early morning from the neighborhood including human wastes. health is not of a big concern to them since they are ignorant not the government. to those who feel sorry for the little pigs, how about our fellow humanbeings who are being killed in unjust wars all over the world because of the aggression and greed of multi-trillion dollar corporations who are after the natural resources of those 3rd world countries?. Your medical advisors aren't that ill informed, are they??)

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

Marti, your ignorant (lacking knowledge, not stupid) on the subject of this flu. You state that the flu kills the old, young, and weakened immune systems. Well, what they are finding is that this flu is killing those 25-45, hence the threat is greater. This is not your normal flu. The genetic variations of the flu from the stomach of birds can have a wide range of effects on humans once the virus has geneticly mutated to transfer to humans. This strain is called swine flu because it went from birds to pigs then to humans.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

SAVE THE PIGS!!!

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

Muslims sould not be attacked by these comments. Sure they dont eat pork but dont say its better for them. Thanks just acting like a fool. I'm sure is was some hypocritical christian making that statement.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

It doesn't matter whether their Muslim or not. Their livestock is being killed because of fear and now their income is gone. Then being billed to have his pigs slaughtered when he had no choice. What a shame.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

The Muslim population of Egypt does not consume swine, but the Christiam population (10+%) does. Eating properly treated, handled and cooked pork products is safe. This is a medical opinion. Sounds reasonable to me. However, Muslims need not raise pigs even for non-Muslims. In fact, if swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs etc., then perhaps we should all consider becoming vegetarians. And remember that cattle get diseases also plus other animals. In that regard, there is a threat of contracting some sort of illness by eating the flesh of any one of a number of animals, well cooked or not. Again, we should consider becoming vegetarians of well washed and well cooked vegetables, to include fruits. It is ridiculous and utterly inexcusable, of course, that the government has ordered the slaughter of this huge swine population. There should be closer communication with reputable medical organizations and infection control programs. I believe the panic response may have stemmed from the fact that Egypt is among the countries stricken the hardest with the avian flu. We continue to lose lives to the flu, every day, and control measures seem to be greatly inefficient. So, I guess the government is working with a 'better safe than sorry' attitude.. only I think it's a sorry resolution, too.

As for swine breeding in muslim countries: It is true that muslims are not allowed to eat pork under the islamic jurisprudence, however, the islamic law is basically tolerant of the other religious groups that live alongside the muslims in any 'islamic' state. I quote islamic, because egypt is closer, in its governing system, to liberal systems, than to islamic ones. With the same notion, it is permissible for people, christian or muslim, to breed pigs for the purpose of being sold and eaten by non-muslims.

A final note, mainstream islam doesn't refer to non-muslims as 'infidels' anymore than christians do. This may oppose a media image propagated in the west. It is also good to be respectful to organizations and people who constitute countries and to make proper discrimination between a governmental decree and the entire country. Thanks and I hope this helped.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

I am so sad for the poor pigs..intelligent, joyful creatures!!!! Every living thing is important in the circle of life, not just humans. I'm ashamed for Egypt.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

Hello, Every one
As many of you don't know, the government decreed to slaughter every animal (pig or avian) who's raised by individuals in thier houses.
What about farms, it is not yet clear here, but i think it will be allowed to rise the animals (avian or pigs)
This is to be easier to control the farms than individuals to control any crisis may occure.

Then in Egypt, there are many Egyptian christians so, they eat the pig's meat and not the Muslims.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

This is so unfair. A lot of people here live with less than a dollar a year. It is sad to see this. To those people who think that the Nile is the only source for the people's water, you are wrong, there are oasis and canals. Egypt is a very agricultural based country. Also the Nile area is filled with tons garbage, while the Sinai Peninsula is beautiful with little trash.

I hate to say this but my people (America) are almost as ignorant as the Egyptians government.
An American in Egypt
he lives here he's the only 1 qualified 2 speak most of ppl here donno wat's egypt Capital!!
how could u speak about inner situation then!!!!

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

Alot of people dont understand why they are killing the pigs.. (an efficient recycling method).
2- Egypt now is considered endemic for the Avian flu and if you have Swine flu+ Avian flu that would cause an epidemic. (Egyptian Economy has losses over 8 billion Egyptian pounds due to Avian flu in the poultry industry sector)
3-As a Muslim country we don't consume pork meat as much and its almost consumed by hotels (Tourists) and few Christian people (And I mean FEW).
4-The problem we will face after the slaughter of pigs would be the increase in the price of meat, chicken and fish. Besides, tons of garbage that were consumed by pigs should be burned.
5-The government should slaughter pigs and freeze the meat to be consumed later.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

I believe that getting rid of pigs, especially in a country like Egypt, should have taken place a long time ago. The hygiene status of pig farms(if we could call them farms) is zero as they're literally raised on garbage. Getting rid of them has nothing to do with religion. I (as a vet) consider those pigs-raising places potential foci for spreading more dangerously modified diseases like flu, that has extreme ability to modify itself and pop out as a different hard to cure disease each time. A decision like that to be made, a number of highly qualified and educated people should be on agreement to make it, not waiting for some pig lovers' or anthropomorphic comments. Don't forget about a deadly disease was originally caused by pigs, when their offals were fed to cattle. This was called Mad Cow Disease, which had cost UK alone heaps to get rid of it.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

This is a beautiful article to demonstrate how government makes swift decisions without adequate study or research in a problem. My heart goes out to the swine farmers as I was raised on a farm in USA in the 1950's & 1960's where all of our food (100%) was raised on the farm. Government should be ashamed!

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

what everybody who's commenting on this matter dont know that pigs in egypt dont live on farms, they are raised in locatins in the city very close to human population less than a mile away. They are also grown on garbage and waste, and mated with humans and other animals like donkeys cows and chickens.
The market demand on pork in Egypt is minimal (less than %10 of population is non muslims and half of them dont concider it as main source of food).
Because of all that the gvernment decided that all pigs will be slautered and owner will be compinsated.

Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

I agree with Aaron from New York, they don't give a crap about that family, it's all about politics and taking advantage of the lucky term of a strain supposedly found in swine; which ofcourse is great opportunity to enforce religion predgitice actions. That family should come to America where the government experiments with people and could care less about pigs. I was recently in Cairo, after 25 years of being away. Things changed drastically there. The country is really running into chaos. Over population, inflation, unreasonably higher prices for everything, unemployment, tyranny, opression, loss of personal freedoms, are taking a toll on people. They see no hope in the future. They lost interest in being better. Same like communism. Tell me which civilized country in the world today mandates having your religious affiliation showing in your ID? People in charge in that coutnry are bunch of farmers who are unqualified to be in these positions. I was reading their personal profiles and none of them have post graduate education! none. Slaughtering the pigs is an execuse to make the Coptic Christian minority lives harder. Pork is cheaper than beef, and more affordable but muslims can't eat it. Destroying the pigs will make the country more "Holy" :) ya right!
