THis is an internationally-monitored light water reactor that can't be used for "nukes" regardless of the false and provocative title of this article. Iran's entire nuclear program started under the Shah, decades ago, with the full assistance and participation of the United States BECAUSE IT MAKES ECONOMIC SENSE. After 6 years of intense inspections and hyped speculation, there is still absolutely NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER of any nuclear weapons program in Iran.

The great nation of Iran has achieved what it had, for the past thirty years, wanted to achieve: build its own nuclear power plant to procuce energy for peaceful purposes. But it also wants to do that while insisting on others respecting its dignity, including its right to contnue uranium enrichment up to the point where a definitive choice has to be made whether it wants to keep the nuclear weapons option also open, or whether it wants to achieve the ultimate Islamic-philosophy-enjoined honor of wilfully eschewing nuclear weapon development and at the same time using the capability to encourage the existing nuclear powers to implement their disarmament obligations under the International Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

The whole international community should send messages of congratulations to Iran and encourage it to pursue the lofty goals that the country's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has set for his country, and pledge to do their part to disarm.

While the incoming new Government in Israel is reportedly contemplating whther it should release Marwan Barghouti in a prisoner exchange deal for Shalit, it could contemplate also doing so. Such a gesture would signal a possible peace-making breakthrough comparable to the release of Nelson Mandela by apartheid-era hardliner Frederick de Klerk in 1991, which ushered in a near-miraculous change of dispensation in South Africa without bloodshed.

I am still amazed that no articles on the Bushehr Nuclear facility mention that construction of this plant was started by the West Germans in 1976. They had a contract to build two units and the price at that time was $10 billion. The Germans built a city of 10,000 with 700 pre-fab homes, fully furnished and complete with bidets, hundreds of apts. for German craft people and over 4,000 laborers from all around Iran. I know because I was there until leaving in Jan. 1979 with a plane load of Germans as all work had effectively stopped due to the revolution. In fact, I finally decided to go when the Shah announced he was taking a vacation - I knew the end was near.

I am no fan of Israel and how it treats its neighbors, although I am extremely fond Jewish people all over the world and their contribution to every facet of life. I know I'll get slack for this, but I salute the Iranians. Although an oil producing nation, they are forward thinking enough to see that clean energy IS the future. Now... with that said...
Iran has made it clear that they DO have nuclear intentions, and their President is not to be trusted with this knowledge. I believe the relationship between the US and Iran is the sole driving force behind all attempts at blocking their way to nuclear capability.

Other states, more dangerous, have atomic weapons, and that includes Israel. I doubt very seriously that the Iranians dont' realize that if they were to develop nuclear weapons, that their use by them would surely bring the destruction of their target, followed quickly by the destruction of Iran. They are not fools. If they can develop atomic energy for peaceful purposes, so be it, I doubt that the Russians want in any way or form to be linked to the destruction of another state by means they provided. They are also not fools.

Unfortunately, or fortunately as you may see it, The US has lost much if not all of the cache it developed after WWII in strongly influencing other states, and that is a rub for us here in the US. But some of us realize that in order for the world to be more peaceful, everyone needs a piece of the pie, everyone.

We can't keep it all anymore, nor should we.

Are we really that willing to put a blind fold on ourselves and congratulate Iran for building a nuclear facility. It is so amazing to read so many negative points of view toward a country that has done nothing wrong but to ask for its equal rights. Iran is a member of IAEA and if the West was not just after undermining Iran’s will to become a more modern and influential country, they could have easily monitor all Iranian Nuclear activities through this organization. The fact is Iranians have learned to live with double standards of the West for decades now, but they have not and will not allow those double standards to stop them from building up their country to the place it deserves to be in.
Iran will become a Nuclear power sooner or later, now the West can either accept that and start a series of direct and respectful negotiations with Tehran so when the time comes Iran would be a country with Nuclear Technology and a friend of the West or they can continue attacking Iran on every chance they get and end up with an isolated, suspicious, and closed country with a Nuclear know how…
I strongly believe that the second option is a lot worst for the West than it is for the rulers of Iran…

As a american i think we should get close to iran (forget the past) and get to know them, what they want and why? Otherwise there will be another iraq for us fighting forever with our so called "GREAT" economy.

I have seen many comments that said "strike them". i dont' know why they say that? but it is clear that these *****hole are the ones who voted fricking bush in office twice and who ultimately landed us in this great period of history (economy bloomming and two winning wars and american image in world superb).

This article is aimed at arousing fear. It is hardly objective. Here are the fact: The Bushehr nuclear power plant was started under the shah and was initially started to be built by the Germans. At that time the US encouraged Iran to develop nuclear power. 2. The Bushehr facility is a power plant that will produce 1,000 Megawatts of electricity badly needed in Iran where there are chronic electricity outages. 3. All spent fuel from the plant will be sent back to Russia under the agreement with that country subject to IAEA monitoring. Even the Bush admin was satisfied with that arrangement. so no threat to anyone. However, once the fuel in installed in the rods and Israel bombs the facility there could be serious problems of contamination not only in Iran but across the Gulf in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait(remember Chernobyl anyone?). So hopefully Israel will think twice before bombing the plant. Finally, why is it that nuclear production of electricity is good and allowed for Christian,Jewish,Hindu and Budhist,and Communist states but forbidden for Muslim states?

Let's see... 1) Iran was caught RED-HANDED purchasing bogus weapons schematics on the black market, and 2) the government has called for Israel to be 'wiped off the map', and 3) representatives from Iran sat down with European and U.S. representatives in 2005 saying that they'd 'stop supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraq if Iran was allowed to continue with its nuclear program.
