It really doesn't matter who wins the elections, the clerics control all the realy power in Iran. This is one of the better blogs done, usually are extremely biased, but this one shows the complexity the Obama Administration must deal with. On the one, Iranians are evenly divided over its future but a series of negative acts by the U.S. could rile up a nationalistic sentiment which will only hurt American diplomatic efforts.
Obama has already "unclenched" the American fist that Bush created and now Obama must follow suit. Iran's statements that the U.S. must sever its ties with Israel is an easy excuse for the Iranian hardliners to continue on their nuclear ambitions while trying to show their people they attempted diplomacy. In the end, Iran will not give up its nuclear ambitions unless the West, mainly the U.S., force Iran to do so. This means some type of war or instability in Iran is most likely the outcome of a failed Iranian policy towards the U.S. Beware Iran, the American people may be wary of war but they know the dangers of allowing a crazed, hypocritical religious regime being in possession of nuclear weapons.

The rhetroric of "Death to..." and so on is totally absurd and has no meaning in a civilized world. After all those who say this know well that death and life are ultimately controlled by God and saying such words is like acting God. However folks lets be clear, Iran is a country that has suffered a lot since the late 70's. During the eighties, Saddam Hussain Invaded Iran and fought a proxy war for others (and to some extent himself) against Iran. The war lasted more than 5 years and resulted in major loss to Iran in terms of lives and financially. Ofcourse Iraq lost also but was soon compensted by its friend at that time. After all this and no compenstaion by either Iraq or its proxies during that war Iran has become sort of like suffering similar to a holocaust and is acting unconciously or counciously to assure their security by all means.
Ther bottom line is that trust has to be established with the Iranian leadership and people to get them out of the hole of feeling insecure. Starting a direct dialog with the Iranian leadership and eventually the people will be a good first step.

I only believe this will work if the Iranians are serious about diplomacy. It is ironic that the election is coming up and Khatami is the more moderate of the two candidates. I expect that Ahmadinejad will make an appearance and at least try the diplomatic route, but I don't feel after reelection that he will follow through. The Iranians, I don't feel, are evil people. They are people poisoned by the policies of their radical gov't. To teach hate to children is awful. We go through enough of that here in the U.S. The U.S. welcomes all cultures, but we are not welcome everywhere. We can only help so many people, and the Iranians are no different. Iran is just one more example of "blowback". Iran and the United States were once as close (perhaps closer) than Isreal and the US are now. One day however, the Iranian people elected (they were a democracy then) a government too far to the left for America's taste. The US responded by destroying the democracy and replacing it with a dictatorship with all the terror and secret police stuff that comes with it. Naturally, the Iranians (like the Americans during their revolution) would not stand for it. However, they made a huge mistake during their revolution and allowed the religious fanatics to take over. Thus, the Iranians have good reasons not to like or trust the US, but now when most Iranians would like to improve relations and their society, they are stuck with a backward religious based government that prevents this from happening. If the US had just followed the advice of its Founding Fathers and not interfered in the first place - this whole mess would not even exist. Read the US Constitution and writings of the Founding Fathers. Isolationism, a gold backed currency, this is what needs to happen for the US to return to being both the economic engine and beacon of democracy it once was and should be. Clearly, the US today is on the wrong path and the demons it faces both internally and internationally are often of its own making.

Do they hold us to a higher standard of behavior than they themselves practice? Personally I think we SHOULD hold ourselves to a higher standard, but if they expect that, then where is the "MUTUAL respect" they want so badly? How can anyone respect someone they look down on as not being capable of demonstrating the same level of respect to those they want respect from?

a watchful eye should be kept on iran, nothing more or less they hate us because we live in a contrie that promotes prosperity and wellbeing it must be hard for them to comprehend this.... i personally think they will never understand... not with all the hate and such in their hearts- thank's to our troops without them this great country would be nothing god bless and seek safety!!! endever to persivere.

What I find disturbing is all the "it's Bush's fault" rhetoric. Pres. Bush never attacked Iran. He did, however, try peace to overcome the issues in Iran AND Iraq. Those people, meaning the religious leaders, have no interest in peace. They want all non-muslims dead. Do you even understand that? They want you, your spouses, your children, your parents your loved ones... dead. These people do not understand peace, they only know death. First Brother and his kubiya love fest will only lead us down another road to war. This one will be more deadly than with any President before. First Brother is going to send our kids to fight his war because he's to damn stupid to understand international politics. Look at the last 12 years, obmama... the US has ALWYAS tried the peace route... but those people want us dead.
