You are joining the UNITED STATES MILITARY; put in place to defend, at all costs, the American way of life. If going to a foreign land to fight with combat arms, and risking life and limb is something you are diametrically against, I would suggest you stroll right past the recruiter's office. This man stood in a room with however many other recruits at the MEPS in Downtown Cleveland, raised his right hand and swore to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic. He doesn't get to choose his war zone. I hope Germany doesn't set a dangerous precedent and allow this DESERTER, this back-turner, to be freed of his military obligations. I hope he is given an Article 15, discharged dishonorably from the Army, and flown to Leavenworth to serve a long sentence for dereliction of duty and desertion. He is every bit a traitor in my opinion. Prosecute and label him accordingly. To all the Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Navy personnel out there who have honored their committments to this great land, God bless you all, and may you return safely to the Hero's welcome you all so richly deserve. Whether these brothers and sisters in arms agreed to the war or not, they stood, they fought, and they died. Their personal beliefs and convictions suddenly were immaterial; they were now part of something more. They were ordered to go, some leaving young children, husbands, wives, parents surely knowing that soon enough, they would return -
that day never came. Their families struggle to understand. The only solace is knowing they died for what they believed in, something more than their self. When you raise your right hand and swear to protect and defend the constitution of these United States, you are no longer an individual; you now are a part of something more. Soon, your life along with your fellow soldiers is intertwined, each depending on the other. There is no room for individuality, nor personal interest. This individual has done far more than just abandon his country, he has abandoned his fellow brothers in arms. During my 13 years in the Army, paying the ultimate sacrifice was always understood. This individual is a coward, and should never be allowed to step foot on American soil again!
U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

I look at most of the comments on here saying "lock him up," "he's a coward," and my personal favorite "he signed up for it." I find it funny that most of these ignorant people haven't served in the military or the ones that have haven't properly looked at law concerning military personal. He signed up to be a US soldier because he believed it would be serving his country. However, when does serving your country cross the line and become killing innocent people, a clearly immoral thing that he believed he was contributing to? Clearly he thought it had crossed this line. To the people who say "this is what he signed up for," where on the contract does it say you will be killing civilians and you must sacrifice your principles? Read Civil Disobedience you mindless conformists! Society is not always right. I would also advise you to broaden your horizons and first read books about the military before you announce your brand of justice. For example, did you know that even though military contracts do not include a clause stating that soldiers can be used as test subjects for new medicine, such as vaccines, the military is allowed to test them on soldiers? And that this is backed by the FDA? Probably not. Kind of defeats the statement "he knew what he was signing up for." Some vets are already experiencing negative effects from medicinal testing, specifically from experimental vaccines for anthrax that incorporated oil based conjuvants which are known harmful substances? I'm aware this is a long winded response but I thought I would attempt to dispel some of the clearly ignorant comments previously made. I support the man who has the courage to stand up for what he believes in, especially in such a totalitarian society that believes they should dictate all appropriate actions.

U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

What a bum I say draw and quarter him. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.) It seems to me that this man served his time in Iraq and then was re-deployed to Iraq - so he has served his country honorably. Many of the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are becoming ill with PTSD, something the news media doesn't advertise - they'd rather call this guy a deserter - yes he went AWOL and is branded a deserter - but think of the circumstances and be aware of PTSD. This may be what is wrong with him and the gov't is ignoring it, and so is the media, ready for another "ripe" and "juicy" story about our servicemen. He has not had any psychiatric tests or been considered he is suffering from PTSD - so cut him some slack because of the fact that at first he did serve his country and followed the oath of a serviceman. You people are so quick to jump to the conclusion that this man is a traitor and should be shot, but if he were your brother or son, or husband, would you not give him a break and perform psychiatric tests to ensure whether he is just another guy who has gone AWOL or that he is suffering, like many of our soldiers over there, from PTSD and other disorders. I am a patriot and love the United States of America and have raised a military family for 48 years and I believe in supporting our country in time of need, no matter what, but you are not considering all of the circumstances. Pretend it is you, and you are suffering from some ailment. What would you do if you were in your right mind? Give the guy the benefit of the doubt until such time as he is proven not guilty or guilty - that is justice speaking.

U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

Once you join the military, you can't just pick and choose. Because whenever someone said something HE didn't "like" about his "job" to PROTECT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES, (a VOW he took as he was VOLUNTARILY SWORN INTO THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF THESE UNITED STATES, a "long, hard fight to win his 'bid' for office"!), he would respond with such "cutesy" statements like, "Stop shoving the Constitution in my face - it's JUST A PIECE OF PAPER!"

Ahem - now then, one other thing - the ARMY, and ALL of the ARMED FORCES have been trolling high schools and utilizing "sales tactics" to get people to sign on the dotted line - at the time when most of these people signed up, I'm pretty sure that the financial outlooks they had were pretty bleak, and whatever arm of the forces they signed into probably "offered" them "training" they could "use" in the private sector - I don't know about you, but, I'm not so sure there's a lot of call for people who used to "kill" or helped same in the private sector - unless you're going into "special black ops" or some other thing that most knee-jerk liberals worry about.

Both sides have to weigh in - and it's going to take time. That said, there are a LOT of people who DIDN'T want to send their kids to the War - mostly Congressial Representatives and Senators - and again, CONGRESS didn't send anyone to war - that was Bush's "call" - remember all that flack over his "unilateral action" WITHOUT Congressional "approval"?

Just think of it - this war will be remembered as the war that "BUSH" "used" our kids as his "private army"!
U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

Travis R. We took out the stablizing power in the region being Sadam Hussien insane, and now we have mess on our hands. We knew where Binladen was and we failed to go there sending in a small amount of troops. Instead we went into Iraq, now after spending billions of dollars and the loss of life we are no safer. We are in the wrong country with the war on terror knowing Iraq had nothing to do with 911. I don't support the war in Iraq, but I do support the troops, because they go where they are told. That's what you do when you are a soldier. But he did voluntarily join the Army and he knew he would probably end up in Iraq. He needs to just carry out his duties that he swore to follow, after that then he can do whatever he pleases. As for calling him a hero Kathy Campione' I dont think so. It seems that word gts thrown around way too much these days. He isnt a hero hes a deserter.

U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

This coward thinks he is more special than the 800,000 other troops over in Iraq and Afganistan? Sounds like he signed up got the bonus now he don't want to play anymore. Right or wrong he signed a contract. Snivel waaa, the military or the USA don't need candy asses like him!!! At least in America it's volunteer to join the military, not forced. He should be glad he is getting the right to fight back against his boss, even if it is Uncle Sam. I joined in 2004 too, I knew what was going on, I knew what I was getting into, and I didn't agree with it all, but at the same time, I agreed with the fact that someone has to be out there to defend the states. And for all of you counting him as brave, or smart or whatever, think about it. Would you really want this guy watching your back in anything? If he doesn't agree with everything, your back is gonna get stabbed.

If you don't stand behind the troops, please, feel free to stand in front of us!!!

U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

Good for him! This war is highly Un-Constitutional, so this whole "he took an oath to defend our country and constitution" pretty much goes out the window. Yes, he enlisted after 9/11, but like many soldiers, he didn't realize the WHOLE situation and start to question things until he saw it with his own eyes. Is he not allowed to question things and come to a different conclusion? I applaud this young man, for standing up for something and trusting his instincts. There are plenty of other soldiers out there who 100% believe in what they're doing and fighting for, so why make this man continue? Everyone knows this war is wrong. Over 1 million innocent Iraqi's have lost thier lives since we invaded. It almost seems inhumane in a way to make someone go out there and do something that they believe is comepletely wrong.

U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

I agree that he signed up for this gig, and should expect to see deployment to a war zone when he did. But the war is illegal, official investigations have determined America was lied to by Bush et al to get us in it and if he doesn't have to play by the rules, why should the average soldier? We are taught to lead by example in the military and the example he was shown by the administration and those military leaders above him blindly towing the company line certainly didn't teach him to do the right thing as they didn't. The whole thing is bad and in the big picture, this soldier's screw up is NOTHING compared to the lies, cheating and manipulation of those above him.

U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

Punk. Amusingly enough that is the same argument that the SS used during Nuremberg. "I took an oath to follow orders, and I was just following orders as I ordered my einsatzgruppen to roll through those occupied russian exterminating jews"

If you were in the military and your CO ordered you to shoot an innocent civilian, would you follow it? Now if your answer is yes, well you are a piece of **** human being. If your answer is no, how far is being ordered to repair a chopper that kills civilians from being ordered to kill that civilian yourself?

I'm not saying the man is right or wrong, i'm not him, i've never been in his situation. But I will say that the man is not a coward as it takes far more courage to stand up for what you believe in the face of adversity, knowing that you will be **** upon by the ignorant masses who know nothing of your life, than it does to blindly follow orders.

The true fault of this situation lies upon the Bush Administration for creating a situation where this man has to choose between his moral/ethical obligations as a human being and his oath as a soldier. When you send men to fight, kill, and die you had best be certain beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are in the right. Of course that is something I doubt most of the fools here can grasp.

Hermann Goering (head of the Luftwaffe, german air force in WWII for the ignorant amongst us) once said (at Nuremberg) "of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drage the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger"

U.S. deserter seeks asylum in Germany

Jenny in SC,

You have no clue. 1 million Iraqis dead?
