Mandela was smart enough to know this, and that is why he did not follow a path of "anti white" when he came to power in South Africa. Mugabe is not Mandela - never was, never will be, and because most westerners don't understand what is really at stake here, they are not doing anything about it.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

For Immigrants in USA! Leave them alone. I visited the country recently and did not see any of the violence that was being mentioned in the media outside of Zimbabwe. And the people I met with and spoke to had more animosity towards the UK, Europe and the US for the sanctions that have caused hardships for them. The sanctions may be on the businesses run and owned by goverment officials but they hurt the rest of the country as well. In the meantime the companies that are doing well in Zimbabwe are American and British owned companies. Even British Airways after convincing other airlines not to fly to Zimbabwe was itself flying to the country till last year and is still doing so using an airline their control that flies in Africa alone. So why should these people trust the west. Start asking serious questions and don't believe every person that doesn't like their leaders. Why is it that the world wants to address the economic problems and collapsing infrastructure of Zimbabwe but not address the sanctions by the west that are the real reason for the problems. It's easy for you to blame Mugabe, but none of you have ever been in his shoes or the thousands of Zimbabweans who lost loved ones under colonial rule as well as fighting for their freedom. No one gave the western world the responsibility of Afica. Leave the African people to handle their matters. They do not like western interferance because through experience they know the west cannot be trusted. By the way not every country wants to have a political system like America's or England's. One can only imagine how the American people would feel if there were other countries that were more powerful that would choose to impose santions on this country because a few people had left and complained that they didn't like President Bush as some have been doing. Just as much as you don't like other countries interfering in your state affairs, so do other countries despise western interferance especially African countries.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Wow, look what Marxsim and Black Majority rule has done for a former thriving country (Rhodesia) now Zimbabe.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Well, at least those poor Zimbabweans don't have to live under the old racist regime of Rhodesia. Things were much worse then, weren't they? Thank goodness Robert Mugabe overthrew the old white supremacist government and brought in a new era of freedom and prosperity for all Zimbabweans!

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

I want to thank you guys for giving the world a "window" from where we can see the otherwise unseen. The best alternative I now believe is to forcefully remove Mr. Mugabe who has single handedly with the Zanu PF destroyed the country and made its wonderful people slaves to his dictatorship.

I am a strong believer that the country can be turned around and that the Zimbabwean people can with Western and local African assistance evolve into a great African nation again.

Thank you for helping 4 men escape the tyranny of Zimbabwe I hope one day they can return to their families and enjoy their country.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Thank you so much. The United States and Great Britain need to change their hands off attitude towards the suffering people of Zimbabwe. Many brave souls died trying to keep this Black Hitler from power, and I am sure they are all smiling now.

Be careful what you wish for... you may just get it.

Ex Rhodesian

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Unless you have lived in Africa you cannot begin to understand it and some of the comments I have read are so short sighted and out of touch. For those people who think that Zimbabweans deserve to suffer as they are now, I would say that you are definitely missing a 'sensitivity chip'. You have no idea what people have been through in Zimbabwe. You state that Zimbaweans killed and sacked the 'whites' out of the country, so now everything thats happening to the 'blacks' is well deserved. What you fail to understand is that the president and his regime were and still are at the forefront of such acts of violence. It was necessary for our land to be shared fairly, since the 'whites'owned almost all the commercial farms in our country, and this was not fair. Most Zimbabweans however do not condone the manner in which land redistribution was done. Nobody deserved to be treated the way the farmers were treated, but one has to understand that it was the work of the president and his regime and not of the average Zimbabwean. So to turn our backs on the majority of Zimbabweans due to some evildoing of a powerful minority is a crime against humanity.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

I love reading these comments that blame America first. Where are the good journalists? Mgabe is our problem, not the US,Britain or any other countries and it is and has been our own greed that brought this great land to its knees, not even SoA or the criminal Russian and Chinese thieves. Learn your AFRICAN history, bro! We murder and thieve like any other continent and we do it because we can and because we too covet. This is not a black/white, Zim/Rho, Mgabe/Mandela, Africa/America, illegal immigration/legal immigration, Obama/Bush, or any other short-sighted quick explanation issue. The Iraqi people chose to remain under the thumb of Saddam Hussein because regardless of what he was doing, most of the time he was doing it to others. The majority tacitly approved of Hussein regardless of whether Shia/Sunni/Kurd. In my Zim, the blacks who benefitted under the new constitution kept quiet because we approved of Bob Mgabe and his politics because he was doing it to others. Even when Mgabe's wife filled a 747 with goods from Harrods department store, we saw humour because after all, we still had a money flow and liked to shop too. The poor would always be poor and we needed them to service us, just as the Iranians only allow Christians to collect trash, whites could leave their homes for us to live in and we would hire the poor instead to clean them.People are ignorant sheep, as Hitler, Amin and Mao knew.North Korea is another example of how the people with the power and the money do not care about their own countrymen starving.Zimbabweans are the same as any other and the blood of our people is on our hands only.We are responsible for our demise. The Mexican crossing the American border is laughable to be considered similar to a Zim crossing; only an ignorant American would think this because they do not understand history or politics or reality.Mexicans crossing the border are opportunists, not downtrodden as evidenced by a recession that has them scurrying back home where the grass is again, greener.America is a great nation being governed by lesser dolts and idiots, a great nation that is being run into the ground by a poorly educated citizenry and elected officialdom, social and political naivete, the morally expendable and corruptable, whether it is the white Bush or the black Obama as its leader, America hates itself more than the world. No nation on Mother Earth has ever done more to preserve the world as a good place than America and her own citizens wish to destroy her.Zim is and was the same, and both shall remain the same, as will all nations. It is the nature of the beast. Trust in God, but tie up your camel is our world.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

How did the situation get so bad, so fast in Zimbabwe? Nevertheless, we all know this is happening because Mugabe is from Africa, and it is Zimbabwe in Africa that we are talking about. Why cant you journalists go to North Korea and try and cover a story on the plight of the common man over there? Why not try giing us an insight in whats up, with the iranians? or the saudis? or even with the palestinians? I guess there's a double standard being used here. Robert Mugabe is not a bad man. sone of you wrongly accuse him because you are not very familiar with what is going on. Have the journalists tried to envision what is happening in Nigeria during the time of general Abacha, and even up til now, where the continents richest economy cannot boast of a clean drinkable water and uninterrupted power supply for its citizens? Of course they cont complain against the nigerian regime because the corrupt officials there stash their loot in the banks and they make use of the money stolen by the officials, interest free, and most times confiscating the funds at the end. Its time we all call a spade a spade.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

why is it that everytime an african country screw up like Zimbabwe, they turn to the western countries to deliver them. i find this very troubling, because it consistently suggest that africans are not capable of gorvening themselves yet they are quick to demand respect, how do they expect the rest of the world to respect them when they are always begging for help on things they have done to themselves.Africans should take responsibility for their actions and find solutions for their problems, if they think that is hard to do, they might as well surrender their countries to the USA and UK to run it for them, since they are always running to them for help. It's a shame what is happening in Zimbabwe but self pity is not the way to go, im sure they are not the only country to go through such difficulty others have been through worse times yet they found strength from within. Its time for them to know that the best solution always comes from the people and not out source.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

well done for enlightening others who cannot even image the hardship of the African people, Zimbabwe is one of those African Countries whose people have been subjected to inhuman treatment by their goverments/ and leaders, while the world stares unconcerned. The pain suffered by the people of Zimbabwe could easily stop if this world is fair. The world powers know exactly how to stop the suffering of the these people, since by now there have realized that their so called sanctions arent bitting, and cannot change the Mugabes goverment. It seems that every time a soft hearted reporter publishes a story about some starving, impoverished people in a country involved in rebelion or taken over by an evil dictator we have to shoulder the responsibility for caring for the people that should stand up and do something about themselves. I have worked very hard all my life to get what little I have now and I am getting very tired of giving it away. The people of these countries may be starving but the reality is that they should do more than just flee to another country , maybe they should do what my forefathers did, stand up and take control of their lives and their country, stop running and make something better where they are. If they can't do anything to help themselves I do not want to do it for them, and I do not want to send my sons to die in some country for people who do not care to try and help themselves.
Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Most Zimbabwe people who remember the "colonial" past and the white government of Ian Smith now dream of the good old days before the world forced the communist government of the degenerate mentally ill Robert Mugabe on them. And what about South Africa? Do they really need more refugees coming into their country?
The problem is the corrupt leader of this country and his socialist policies that are destroying the country. This is a problem for Zimbabwe to resolve.
Perhaps with help from the African Union? It is sad that this is going on and I feel sorry for the people it is happening to. But, we do not have the resources or the political clout to resolve this problem. And truly, it is not our problem. Maybe someone in the U.N. can help with this? Yeah, right. That organization is SO effective. I don't have an answer other than the people of Zimbabwe need to rise up and get themselves a new leader. If are participating in sanctions perhaps we stop doing that. However, be carefull what you wish for. It may be that these policies could bring an end to the rule of Mugabe and that could be the beginning of the end of this tragedy.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

they say violence is not good??/i wonder we hang saddam, jailed noreiga, almost killed kaddafi????all because we did nt like them or their role is over .???why we don t kill mogabie and relieve the people of zimbabwe ,hunger to starvation, depleted economy inflation 1 million or more%,now cholera.hey george bush wake up and smell the the dead people of a country that offer the world things other than diamond ????

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Although I am sure it has already been said here, it bears saying again.

Where were these "journalists" when the white farmers were being thrown off their land?

Given that fact, the "tragedy" of this situation is completely lost on me.

Just more more liberal elite media nonsense.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Ken in Colorado: The media did not do enough to inform our nation of all the damage that your president has inflicted on our nation. Unfortunately Africans are the wretched of the earth, and at this time Zim is the posterboy for that situation, this is because they cannot tell their own story, they do not control the media. There are no less than 400 UK companies operating in Zim now, and they want even more, but how many Zim companies are operating in the whole of Europe??
When the Europeans scrambled for Africa centuires ago, and partitioned it, Africans were forever divided, enslaved, weakened and ruled. Next time when you jump on a jet plane to go surfing in Cape town or Durban, or to count the wild entities of the Congo rain forest, look around you and count the % of Africans who can afford to fly around the world having a good time present in that plane and let me know!! Think about it, this applies to every plane that takes off from any airport.
The EU sanctions are not against Mugabe, they dont affect him at all, he has everything an 80 yr old desires, they are against the whole people of Zim especially those who cannot emmigrate, but of course this story will not be told.
For those of us who lived thru the liberation war, seeing our people being killed daily with Uzis, and ammo made in the US, and the EU, and for what? The story goes deeper that what a modern day western journalist can tell!! The west is not all that it is cracked to be, and eating wheat bread is not the best thing for sub equatorial Africans with their gluten intolerances, they should focus on other natural foods that God placed before them, but tell this to a chinese breadmaker who is out to get resources! Its all very sad if you happen to be the African in Zim.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Mr.Fletcher you are a great man. Zimbabwe will never again be Rhodesia, problems or not. Mugabe is a bastard just like you, but that doesnt nullify the authenticity and freedom from colonialism that Zimbabwe has now. WE need Mugabe to go, and God knows we have a lot of things to fix in Zimbabwe, but Mugabe is one man with a grip on the police and the military. There are millions of better men and women in Zimbabwe and it will rise up again. So if you are having Rhodesia nostalgia and celebrating the problems in Zimbabwe becasue you are bitter because we got our independence from colonial bastards, then i pray you NEVER come back to Zimbabwe, even after Mugabe and his goons are gone. Nomatter how bad things get, intelligent people never wish for slavery and colonialism to come back, NEVER! I am sure that if they had money supplies could be bought there that would cost less and at the same time it would provide jobs which again would put money into the communties. Pigs, sheep goats etc., could be purchased locally and again stimulate the local economy. Security would of course be the first concern. Again where and how could we send money that leaders will not skim off the top so it gets to the little people that need it all over the world.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

When I watched you say "What’s more important, their freedom or our story?", and then toss the bottles of water, I wept. To see you understand and publically demonstrate the proper priorities of human freedom over journalism was very decent. Kudos to Martin and Paul. Thank you for broadcasting a selfless standard of behavior.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

I dont understand why other leaders of the free world doing just zero... They never appreciated the very hard work the white people and the indians put in to bring western money to the region.
there is notion that people should just give aid to all these regions....grow up. These are countrise with people who are well able to work for the wealth that is readily available and they choose not to.
no one starved in these countries while the whites and indins were working there. they grew food for the countries and exported the surplus. there was resentment that 'foreigners' were making any money...and yes the local people were paid well and made money too. those that studied and learned to farm or do business or run hospitals did well. unfortunately there were many of their own people who also resented that fact. it was a lot easier to be corrupt and just take what you need and that is how the countries were run when they threw the 'foreigners' out. then when there was nothing left they have starvation and poverty and desease. the reality is they care less about their own countryman than we do. these are not children, they could solve their own problems if they worked together.
it was criminal to assist the men crossing the border illigally. they may have brought cholera with them. you disrepected those countries laws.
you would have done better to give them money or your phone so you could interview them and get some facts.
you should have got some information on how they could best help people in their area instead of running from their situation.
those men run away( you note there were no women and children with them) but the outside world is supposed to go in and help...and be killed in the process and then told to leave and mind their own business!!

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

Mugabe's regime is corrupt and paranoid. The sanctions imposed on him were designed to force him from power. Sadly, as is the case with most liberal regime change methods sanctions and blokades simply add to the sufering of the people that are already under duress from the corruption and brutality of the Regime. Look how effective sanctions have been on Cuba, North Korea, Sudan, Iraq prior to Gulf War II and Iran. The Regime is still firmly in power while those that oppose it are starved, disease ridden and deprived of any leverage against their oppressors. As a matter of fact their starvation as a result of western interference is a rallying cry for the regime. Sorry guys, regime change is a violent business but saves lives in the long run.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

I am an African (Liberia)...I know how people are treated in Africa (it is not a nice memory) so what you guys are doing in Africa to help is such a great blessing, and only God can repay you for the great job you and your crew are doing towards humanity.

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

It is nice to see that they made it and that numerous people are happy. But it makes me wonder how many of those same people are opposed to illegal immigartion in our own country. These are probably the same people who wish to build a giant fence to keep people out of the US. The problems are the same worlwide. Poverty and no opportunity drive people to leave their homes and families. We need to adress the root of the problems and not the results(illegal imigrants)

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

I have read through all the comments posted. I note with concern that few of the writers really understand the situation in Zim and the causes. Mugabe still enjoys support here. Those who do not support him have 'fortunately'had access to various media tools to shout the loudest. I sum the Zim situation as " There are too many hands for the pie".

Zim Problems Listed

1) Sanctions from the West
2) Land question
3) Corruption (at every Level!)
4) Interest of the West on Zim's Vast Mineral wealth - major Prob

All the other problems stem from this list.

America got it wrong (George Bush) getting rid of Sadam did not solve anything except create perfect hatred and anger towards the west. This problem so created and retaliation to come, will haunt American generations to come.I thank God terer are no guns and bombs on our streets, we are a peace loving people and peace we will have!!!

Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

i cant believe the odasity you have comeing into my country and doin what you did! americans should clean there own yard before pointing fingers.
