ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – The story about the worsening economy in Pakistan can be seen in the plight of children at the Edhi Welfare Center in Karachi – it has meant more children being dropped off.

Here is Canada we know so little of the hardships suffered around the world. But my heart broke as I read about the numbers of children that are abandoned, I know offering prayers isn't a lot, but I will pray for your organization. I wish I had money to send but I am ashamed and sorry to say I don't. I live a frivolous life compared to all the suffereing around the world, and I am going to endeaver to start being more responsible so that in the future I am able to send more than prayers. I am adding this to my favorites so I won't forget about it. And in time may be able to help a little. God bless you all for all your work and sacrifices.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

L. Here in America we have plenty of money for congress and haliburton but very little money for our soldiers or kids on welfare!!! Cook,
Putting more money into America's welfare system is not the answer. Providing jobs for lazy stay at home mothers is. We don't need to go into how many people abuse America's Social Security, Welfare and all the other assistance programs but its definitely something to think about. I can't tell you how many people who aren't even CITIZENS can get money from our Government. The people need employment opportunities, not funds just handed to them. It's really sad how many people this country allows to abuse the system.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

Actually, Mrs. Lessnor, things are THAT bad for some families in the U.S. This problem is not reserved for 3rd world countries. There are places and people who are in the exact predicament(or worse)right here in the Good Old US of A. I work full time, raise one child, and I know that I am less than a paycheck away.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

ppl plz read carefully, 8 kids with 3 mothers.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

If you really mean what you say --- donate money today to help. Action speaks louder than words.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

So saddened by this story I can't even imagine how a mother would feel dropping their kids at an orphanage or worse selling them into slave work etc. The world is a cruel place but I sincerely believe the Edhi foundation really cuts the red tape out of charity and actually helps those in need. (Try 1 or 2, then adopt if you can support more). If people are not educated to understand that they are lowering the life condition of everyone on the planet by having more children than the planet can sustain, more heartache will follow and the poorest will suffer the soonest and the most. What is sad is that there government is not able to provide for them; period. Our beliefs in the US differ vastly so we cannot look at them through our filter! Birth control is frowned upon, having a lot of children is the norm. Polygamy is their practice. We shouldn't scorn them for their culture, we should ask what they have been spending their money on and where the Aid Money to Pakistan in previous years has gone. We can't seem to control our own pocketbook so how do we expect a 3rd world country to do it?

As for the comment about "lazy" stay at home mothers, they are not lazy! I was lucky to be able to stay at home with my daughter for the first year of her life. What makes a mom lazy? That she is at home? What do you think they do all day? Watching your children is work, that is why we often pay others to do it for us!!!

I feel terribly for the parents who cannot support their children in Pakistan. Times are tough for everyone in the world.

I also feel the same way if not more distressed for the families who suffer a similar fate here in the US. I think it is important to donate where we can but I also believe we need to start at home first. Too many children here miss meals or eat junk food (which ironically is inexpensive as opposed to healthy foods). Too many are uneducated even though they attend school because there teachers lack the skills to work with children (for various reasons one also being they don't share the same economic background as their students) who have bigger problems than learning to read, like eating. Many families are becoming homeless due to our economic crisis and nobody is helping them.

We need to refocus our compassion and pocketbooks to fulfill our needs and secure the future for our children here in the US. If you can afford to help another country as well, then even better for you.

Wake up people, the world is getting smaller and smaller everyday, lets find a way to make it better for all.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

How did this get turned into yet another male bashing post? The thread gets pulled all over the place. Oh Rachel, you can't effect change! My ex-husband is one of 10 children born into an irish catholic family. Birth control was not an option for his mom(the good catholic)and his father was your typical "thumping on the chest, he-man". During the lean years when construction workers were being laid off during the winter, my ex tells the story of too many mouths to feed and how his brothers and sisters were split up and sent to live with relatives. Its a heartwrenching story to even separate a family to live with other family members, I can't imagine the heartache of leaving ones babies with strangers, yet it seems the only option to ensure survival. Its an awful truth and think of how many children are homeless with their parents? or will be because of the economics of our current situation here in the US. If orphanages still existed in the present day, don't think for a moment that parents wouldn't be dropping off their children, giving the ultimate sacrifice to ensure their childs survival vs. starvation or homelessness due to their choices in life. I pity the mothers who have no choice and my heart breaks for the children that are being torn apart. Who are we to jump to conclusions? rather than be judgemental lets find a way to help. If you're against helping those outside of your community than help within your area..shelters need food, clothing, donations. Become a secret santa for a struggling family do something other than scoff at those less fortunate and make some ignorant excuse or blame. This story is to spark awareness and compassion, and show how the innocent continue to suffer.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

This story is shocking- but a similar story is occurring in Nebraska where parents are abandoning children at local hospitals. Unfortunately, the economic crisis and its impact on families is not limited to "Third World" countries.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

Pakistani did not know how good they had until they were thrown this bone of "democracy". People like Mr. Zardari and Nawaz Sharif two leaders in the present government have been tried and tested. Both failed. These leaders had bankrupted the nation, until Musharaff took charge and rescued it. He lead the biggtest economy recovery in the history of Pakistan. No one went hungry under his watch. He allowed total freedom of press and people had the right to speak as they wished even calling him a "dog". Some people complain about a lack of democracy then. There was democracy as far as people having total freedom. Yes he concentrated too much authority in himself. I think that is far better than to have corrupt rulers like we have now.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

Very sad indeed, but these people need to be smarter than this. In 1950 the mortality rate was twenty-seven per 1,000 population; by 1990 the rate had dropped to twelve (estimated) per 1,000. Yet throughout this period, the birth rate was fortyfour per 1,000 population. On average, in 1990 each family had 6.2 children, and only 11 percent of couples were regularly practicing contraception....

The key to controlling population growth, according to activists in the women's movement, lies in raising the socioeconomic status of women. Until a woman's status is determined by something other than her reproductive capabilities, and especially by the number of sons she bears, severe impediments to lowering population growth rates will persist."
http://countrystudies.us/pakistan/29.htm
Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

Abuse is abuse... child wealth fare is not the answer. This is about KIDS and not women and not about Muslims or Asian, etc. I dont know how I will react too if I have to give my children away. Pakistan is a country that has been victimized by the COLD war and having repeatedly corrupt leaders. Pakistan was not given a choice to be an America Ally during the Cold War or the War on Terror. They had to comply... They had to spend the money on the Army to fight the war on Terror. Having corrupt leaders does not help either. But at the end of the day, the problem remains the same, poor people are suffering and it is people like Edhi Foundation who, without being prejudice, spent everything towards the welfare of these people. I will do everything that I can to help people like this through Edhi Foundation. Maybe this will bring me closer to God. May God help his suffering creation all over the world and give our leaders the wisdom to spread peace in this world. Amen.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

jane Doe,

I can emphatically tell you that non documented individuals are not entitled to any support...well, they're entitled to have temporary insurance during child birth...that is about it...not a whole lot...for every time you mention illegal individuals and how much they're taking from us, I will show you about 30 citizens of this country (of various colors, creeds and ethnicities) who do not want to get out of their house and get a job...they complain loudly but will not do anything unless it is the 1st or the 15th of the month when it's time to renew your benefits at the local welfare office...that is about the only thing that they get out and do...they will scream loud but will not do anything about it...have a great day
Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

I agree with what was said earlier by Mike and others: the women are beaten because they tried to find a solution for keeping their children from going hungry, and the men are given jobs? What?! I'm sure the women hid some of the money (any smart wife would- my mother has always had bits of cash hidden all over the house, and often times that money got us through tight times), but that won't keep all of it out of the men's hands, and it will be spent away in a week. I think the men should be taken outside and beaten before sending them off to their new jobs. This all came about because of sympathy for the women and children, but the men deserve some sort of punishment.

And I agree, birth control would help these women control their situation tremendulously. Funny how our Pres. Bush and his cronies don't understand situations like these and want to push abstinence all over the world. Do they really think men who beat their wives understand, "Sorry, honey. We don't have enough money to feed our kids, we can't risk another baby!"? The conservatives LOOOOVE having babies, hate birth control and pander on about the sancity of life, but they don't want to feed those babies or preserve life outside the womb! "Sorry kid, yur on yur own!" If they really cared about the "sancity of life" they'd help medical professionals provide access to birth control so parents can take excellent care of the children they have and not have to worry about another unexpected mouth to feed.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

Don't say that "it isn't that bad here in the states." *You* may not be feeling the pinch, but what about people who are less fortunate than you? People who don't have the money for the things they need.

And if you want to adopt kids, look for the kids whose unashamed parents have been dropping them off in Nebraska from all over the country. Sure, Pakistan needs money, too, but they aren't any worse off than the people in Darfur. My point is that such things ARE happening here in the states; it's just easier to listen to in the media when it isn't so close to home.

Plight of Pakistan's abandoned children

for the person below: 8 children between 3 mothers.. duh.
I am so thankful that both my husband and I have jobs. I was born and raised in India, lived there for 27 year and was a high school teacher in a village for about 5 years. It broke my heart when my bright high schools girls dropped out because they got pregnant. Education is the KEY.
