Obama. We should expect the world to support a well educated, polished, experienced, and composed leader.

And since we're on the subject of race, I'd like to point out that Kansas is the birthplace of Sen. Obama's mother. The world views Sen. Obama as "Black," which is fine. But let's not forget that he is equally of Anglo descent as he is African. In fact, he was raised by his white relatives. So his "race" should not define him; his character should.
Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

Spot on guys, we want change too! It is up to the Americans though, but rest you assured those Republicans, especially Pres Bush did your country no good guys... We don't respect you anymore. A lot of work needs to be done to resore your international credibility... Good luck.

Lastly, I read somewhere one of Mr McCain's managers taking a swipe at Mr Obama's failure to "rescue his poor relatives" from poverty in Kenya... Geez! What a nerve! Can anyone stoop so low! Begs the question: Would he say that about an American family in the midst of an election in these dire economic times? Methinks not.. Shame on him to use a defenceless poor family for political expediency.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

It is not only tasting the fruits of a black president but showing the world that balcks also have brains; contrarily to what some conservatives would have us believe. Much as I hated apartheid, let me remind you what happened to South Africa when apartheid ended. It was amazing! Everything went downhill from there! The medical system went downhill (the president blamed AIDS on poverty, said it was not caused by the HIV virus. Good grief!), the education system went downhill - last I heard you only need 25% to pass a class, unless you attend an institution where they can't fail you, which is also common. Imagine going to see a doctor who only needed 25% to pass medical school! Unemployment skyrocketed! Like someone said above, vote for personal freedoms, Obama/Biden will just take a lot of those away...We DO have the right to have these freedoms you know???

and in response to everyone attacking "Gene." I think what he or she is trying to say is that we don't need other countries who have constantly benefitted from the U.S to try and influence a nation's choice. Like them, we have a choice, let us make it whether it be a mistake or not! They're getting our money regardless of who runs the country. For those of you who think we are worse off than some places, look up Third World Countries like those in Africa and tell me if you can even make a slight comparison.

In regards this article, racism is no longer a major public issue, like with anything these days, the street now goes both ways!! Lets move on from this.

Rights, Freedom and Choice for me the next 8 years. McCain/Palin!

Obama supporters please get beyond naivity. Stop looking past the policies/plans of him by thinking you are hearing the voice of an angel. Remember that he has plans for not just the country, but the world and that is a radicalist and socialist idea. This has nothing to do with race, gender. It is politics and if you would look at he facts, look at the past and present, you too would realize how much better off we'd be in a McCain administration. STOP trying to run against a president who has already served his terms!

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

don't pay any attention to Gene from Woodward Oklahoma, he's not too bright.
I'm from Oklahoma, born and raised and we are good people.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

"Most of the people I am around, at work or at home, are all concerned with the general Marxism flavor of the Obama platform. America is a Constitutional Republic. There is a difference. Feel free to look it up.

Basically people seem to like Obama either because:

A: He's black (partly) and they regard being black (even partly) as a positive thing over being white. Good.

B: He's not George W Bush or John McCain. Granted they are terrible in many ways. But is Obama better? Will his agenda drive America further into debt? Into more wars? Does he flipflop on issues (like Iran/FISA/funding/negative campaigning, etc)? Does he sabre rattle (consider his comments on Afghanistan, Iran and Darfur)? Does he show even a glimmer of economic understanding with a regime of heavy spending, more regulation and tax increases?

If America continues its economic decline, as I'm quite certain it will under an Obama presidency, don't expect those "fruits" to taste very sweet.

Change is definitely needed. I find it interesting that a country like the US which has NO survellance system to detect the exact number of HIV infections can come up with bogus statistics regarding the HIV/AIDS rate in countries like South Africa. For your information, the US government hardly ever does something for nothing. Almost all the money going towards helping with HIV/AIDS in Africa is for research purposes. In other words Africans are wonderful gunea pigs. Africans couldn't care less if individuals such as yourself are interested in their "respect/goodwill". However, you should know that this is not a situation of the rich helping the poor. Over the past decades, it is The Great US of A, that has taken on the role of God, in the lives of many. America, that has twisted the arm of truth and justice, and have destroyed countries, and the lives of many. America, who has repeatedly benefited from spoils in form human resource and material wealth, as a result of oppressive measures, namely slavery, racism, the design of poverty among minority groups. So, if the truth must be told, America cannot be blameless, and those of you who will deny these atrocities, are without an active conscience. However, the past is the past, and it would indeed be wise, for us all to look toward the future, and make it work. at the end of the day, we all need each other, and there is more than enough, for everyone. so really, there ain't no need for the selfishness and greed that's going around. for the betterment of the entire human race, we need to put aside our differences aside, and do all within our power to create wealth, health, prosperity and happiness, in every nook and cranny of the world. Let's all aim at summoning the blessings of God upon every nation, and not just America. After-all, America isn't the only country in the world. I am all the way here in Jamaica (Caribbean), and sure, we got more than our fair share of problems, but hey, all is in vain. we suffer as a people, as a nation, and the entire global community, because we allow ourselves to be overcome by greed. by our own selfish desires. we have allowed love, compassion, empathy, to die a very painful and terrible death. That too gonna suffer a similiar fate, if we don't change our hearts and minds. There has been far too much hate going around, for far too long. This has to end now. Let's all check ourselves. We just got to. Everyone thinks that African's shouldn't have a say so. Well, everyone is wrong. African's can be concerned about what is going on in the U.S. Think about it like this, what if they want to come to the U.S. and live over here. Don't you think they would seriously care about what kind of state they were coming to or what kind of person would be ruling over them. What if the person ruling over them wouldn't like them coming over to the United States? I mean really people, think before you speak.

And about the voting...No one is voting for Obama just because he is black. And no one is voting for McCain just because Obama is black and if that is the case, then GROW UP because the racism stuff in this world needs to stop. Yes, I'm white but I LOVE black people. I'm for them 100 percent!!!! But I don't want my people voting for Obama just because he is black. I think people should vote for him because he is the one who finally wants to bring our soldiers home!!! That just makes me happy to hear someone say that they want to bring them home. Because I know I'm ready to see my ex-boyfriend. And I'm sure y'all are ready to see someone y'all know over there. So please people, just think before you speak. And try to end the racism.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. USA. In the USA, a democracy with a white majority, a better-qualified black candidate is poised to be president. In South Africa, a democracy with a black majority, a blatantly corrupt and useless black government has replaced a highly effective white government. Even though South Africa has falled from being one of the most advanced nations in the world to now given to countries in Africa and elsewhere. There is much of the story we don't get to see in the media here in the United States, such as the extent of the support we gave to Mugabe, and many other tyrants who brutalize and murder their own people with Government knowledge and support. If the country had anything the U.S. wanted such as oil in Nigeria or strategic locations for military bases, we poured money into those country's governments and closed our eyes to the atrocities being perpetrated by those same leaders/murderers.

All we see in the press here is how the U.S. is 'helping' another poor country in Africa. The reality is the PEOPLE of Africa rarely see any benefit from the U.S. dollars, as they are spent by their Presidents, Military, Police, etc. to keep themselves at the highest standard of living. Even humanitarian efforts are thwarted by governments such as Zimbabwe's Mugabe who would rather let millions die than give up his domination of the country.

If you are willing to look past the hyper-sanitized versions of our involvement in other countries, go to the library and read some books written by authors without the 'pro-USA' bias and get the real facts behind the money being pumped into Africa. I can assure you, every cent is given with a string attached right back to Uncle Sam.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. course not. The notion that African Americans would only vote for Barack because he is black is apalling. This man is educated and intelligent, but because he is black, this somehow disqualifies him from being a good presidential candidate. Only narrow minded people filled with hate and clinging to racism would even suggest a thing.McCain serving in the military does not make him an honorable man or one who is qualified to run this nation. The smear campaign he is running on Barack, attacking his character, only shows that McCain himself has no character. He has distorted the truth (LIED) and has played on America's long history of racism to try and shift this election. Barack has already won as a MAN even if he may lose this election by default, so no one can take pride in that. The problem is that we can no longer continue to help the entire world, because there are too many people in the USA who are draining it dry. For Obama to become president means we will empty out what little we have left.
We are re-living the fall of the Roman Empire when too many people became dependent on the government.
If you really want to see the difference, consider this: 3 years ago we were still a land of plenty.
Then Nancy Pelosi and company took majority control. It has been downhill ever since.
It's not the presidential race we need to worry about, its the Congress and Senate! They will do more damage than the president. The last 2 years proves that.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

I have lived many places in the world, and each one is insular and petty in its own way. In Europe, they hate Americans not because of our current president but because it's fashionable and they think it makes them look intelligent. It is also the stereotype backlash one gets from the recipient of so much monetary assistance we provide. Most Europeans will tell you what monsters we are for making unilateral decisions like what occurred with Iraq but get very quiet when you speak about the unilateral decisions made on behalf of Europe, like Kosovo. They will also plead ignorance when you ask about France's arms deal with Iraq which was clearly in violation of every international organization, treaty, etc...
In Asia, they could care less. Why? They don't look to the U.S. as their sugar daddy, and they tend to be more self reliant. If it weren't for the U.S. most of the world would be speaking 1 of 2 languaages; German or Chinese.
When I lived in Istanbul, everything was some kind of CIA orchestrated plot. If you're late for work because of traffic, a Turk will lecture for 20 minutes on how the CIA caused this. People in that part of the world can not be reasoned with. Don't believe me. Get on the plance and pay them a visit.
Africans think Obama will be good because he is black. This is called racism. Blacks in Chicago think Obama will give them better jobs and build them better places to live but without higher rents. This is called welfare. If the people in this country will have some self respect and do what they think is right for themselves and their neighbor, then the rest of the world will take care of itself by default.
What we should all be concerned about is a democratic congress and a very liberal democratic president. Government works best when there are forces holding each other in balance. Do you know what happened in socialist Sweden when tax rates became very high for successful people? They moved to another country. If there is no longer anyone to pay for handouts then where will you get them from? If you don't like CEO pay then why don't you boycott their products? Why doesn't anyone get upset about senators and congressmen not paying into our social security system? Aren't they our representatives? Why is it wrong to ask a guy trying to be president why he attends a church that proclaims, "God damn America"? The rose colored glasses combined with the blame game is going to come to a very bad end.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

All this talk about race is getting out of hand. People race should not be the issue here. The concern should be who is capable of taking the Country out of the state it is now in. President Clinton was able take us out of such stagnation after the republicans made a mess of things and our fear is if another republican is elected, we will be heading for disaster.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

What difference is the color of the skin? I am a hard core Obama supporter, and white. I will admit that, outside of thinking Obama is by far the most qualified for the job, I also love the light it puts the US in. We need the support of the rest of the world to dig ourselves out of the hole we've created. I cried over the last election and can't even imagine losing this one. However, this is not the point I want to make. My point in posting is to state that it is ridiculous to think it is purely a race thing that is making blacks support Obama so strongly. They always overwhelmingly vote democrat (at least by 80%). Honestly, if blacks had control of the electorate Gore would still be president. While I do not know everything that would have happened, at least we would have had a better handle on the environment.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

Of course we should be aware of what other people around the world think of us, but there is nothing we could possibly do to please them all. I for one do not care which presidential candidate is most popular in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya or anywhere in Europe for that matter.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

Hey Nathan cool it now... Fact is it is true that my continent has not covered itself in glory in a whole lot of issues. The stance of our former Pres on HIV/AIDS left a lot to be desired. Morons like Mugabe across my border have done us no favours.

These are facts that many of us debate daily in the country, and believe me there are many opposed to my views and believe the West (you guys) are the primary cause. Perhaps to some extent, but not anymore. We hold our future on our own hands and believe me, young 30 year olds like myself are hard at work on that. Whether you feel there is moral obligation for U.S companies et al who traded with the apartheid govt and enriched your country while condeming some of us to perpetual oppression is another debate...

Fact of the matter though is your Pres lied to the rest of us about Iraq. He alienated us as either "for us or against us". We admire the U.S for all the reasons u correctly stated, but the arrogance of the past 8 yrs left a bitter taste in all of us.
As much as we need you guys i think humility and consesus seeking will take you much further.
Lastly, the Exchange Control policy as implemented by the SA Reserve Bank has largely insulated us from the credit crunch turmoil that your country brought to the world. Now that is something worth learning... and not let people in the McCain campaign pick on poor helpless families...not here, not over there.

All the best and happy voting...
Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

I am happy to say that my at my office the subject of race has come up and discussed quite frequently regarding the election. What is most discussed is how scared some of us are if some crazy supremacist decides to take aim at Mr. Obama. I wish the McCain campaign would do more to dispell ugly untrue rumors going around about Obama, but they won't because they are most likely at the root of the lies. I look forward to a change for the better, and hope that people won't close their minds because they are scared of change or the unknown. Some places in this country black and white live and interact with one another daily...some people out in the midwest may never have even seen a black person other than what is on TV. I hope and pray that average citizens will take the time to look at the real issues and free themselves of any irrational prejudice.

Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

Who on God's green earth cares what South Africans think!!South Africa is being driven into the ground by their African National Congress communist party aligned socialist government. Howz the U.S?
Look, SA has its problems: crime, disease, poverty, corruption etc. And this is where we are hammering our government right now. Infact, I for one never voted for the ruling party. They have not done nearly enough for our country in 15 years! I want a strong opposition to challenge the ANC and I want them out of power actually.
However, can you really say it was better during apartheid??? U joking right!??? Look I was 16 when apartheid ended. I was raised in the Homeland "state" of Transkei, forbidden to "come" to South Africa. My parents were nothing more than cheap labour for the multinational mining companies here in Jo'burg. I went to rural schools, sat classes on cardboard boxes, walked bare foot and had very little clothing.

"How" am I sitting here u may ask? Because the end of apartheid meant black students like me who had potential despite systematic prejudice were able to go to Medical School, WHICH I DID! Now I am a medical graduate from the Univ of Cape Town and hey I did it in the 6 year period that every other white student did, and not the so called "extended" 7 year programme for "previously disadvantaged students". Our medical educ is still one of the best, I see all Western countries send candidates here to specialise etc. I have never seen anyone graduate as a "25% student". Infact some U.S students were amazed how tough our lecturers are to give 80 and 90 % passes and how easily failed we were. I mean FAILED if u are not up to scratch. As a result, I can walk into any country with my certificate from UCT and start practising...

Lastly, the infrastructure you say "went downhill" was verily built to serve only a minority of our population before 1994! Its just that now everyone is included and I do think the govt should have done more quicker to accomodate everyone.
The Pres should have butt out of the debate on causes of HIV/AIDS long ago, it aint his business but that of the medical profesion! I blame him there.

So please get your facts straight. If you want to stay in the US well and good, but critic our country on facts... and there are plenty... Meantime we will continue to look for solutions down here.
