By Martin Fletcher, NBC News Correspondent TEL AVIV – This American election has fascinated the planet more than any other in living memory; because it concerns us all more than any other. There is still time for negotiation, low-level discussions at first, setting the table for high-level negotiations soon after. My feeling is it will not work, as the Iranian mullahs will remain obstinate. ANY strike on Iran will have to involve US warplanes, a massive strike that must negate thier ability to strike back. The problem will be the depth of the facilities that need to be destroyed. There are rumors of the US using bunker-busting, low yield nuclear weapons. There has to be a better way, but using 5 kilotons would accomplish the mission. Troop concentrations, armour, airfields, naval craft, all on the target list. It will take hundreds of planes, and weeks to hammer our point home.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Someone please explain this

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7656807.stm

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

This election will usher in a transfer of power to the new congress. The Iranian regim wants to remain in power in the region for ever, despite its people crying to be free. Iran nuclear power once fulfilled it will become a strong political and military tool in the hand of the regim. It can keep the regime for ever, to creat political un settlement in the area. In my opinion, the best shield to protect Israel, is to promot peace, eduacation and prosperity among the people in the entire middle east region. Then, the Iranian regim can not recruits and brian wash savage people any more. It will be isolated to swim the ocean alone. Allah decided who won that war, and Allah has allowed Israel to exist.

Were the gains of the 1967 six day war be returned to the countries it was taken from, none of it would go to Palestinians.

Do you hear those "contributing "countries wanting that land back? For them, isn't Israel the solution for their own Palestinian problems?

Israel is not a Facist state. Israel has the right to defend itself against the murderous ideology of the Palestinians, which is unrelenting.

The Palestinians are their own worst enemies.

We have to change that, and somehow become more of an enemy to the Palestinians than they are to themselves.

I don't see how that can be accomplished. Open war has been outlawed on Earth, in favor of "police actions" which are incapable of providing meaningful damage to the enemy.

We won WWII by carpet bombing them back into the stone age. Israel will probably use Irac as a launch point to strike Irans nucular facilities. Iran has been to threatening with the US Navy, and the threats to attack American bases. The USA will not stand in the way of Israel as a war is going to be inevitable. The USA already has troops on both sides of Iran making for a good launch of troops into Iran. Syria will more then likely jump in on the action, and possibly Hezbolla. Then, we also got Russia gaining influence with South American countries. Chaves will most likely led the attack from the south while Russia will hit from the north. China, N.Korea, possibly Vietnam, and Indonesia will hit the west coast. Iran may well be the catalist igniting the next major conflict in these tough economic times.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Richard A. Stop bashing Israel, and let's remember that just a half century ago they were being exterminated. I think for what the world has done to them, they deserve at least a small piece of land in the vast middle-east. Support for Palestinians and Arabs? I personally advise against any interaction with any country in this world where women are being raped without repercussions and where the concept of human rights doesn't exist.
You want peace in the middle east? Then stop hating the Jews... what the hell is wrong with you people? Leave them alone in the land they have, and I am willing to bet that they won't invade any other country, and will stop killing the terrorists that keep attacking their way of life.
As fas as Obama and McCain.. Yes McCain is definitely the most aggressive of the two. I predict Obama intends to get involved in the world, only as far as we are backed up up by the UN or other western allies. This is probably a good thing for our country right now, since we are not as strong as we once were. On the other hand... let's remember all the good America has done in this world, including giving the world democracy, technology, and pushing the rest of the world to abandon their archaic concepts which disregard human rights. Should America be involved somewhere in the world where humans are being treated blatantly unfairly? Absolutely!! Is a lot of the rest of the world a bunch of cowards, driven by only self-interest? Absolutely! That's why they often don't do anything when terrible things happen around the globe. Should America stop mixing "freedom wars" with self-interest? Absolutely!

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Obama will make a horrible president, and so will McCain. We don't have any good choices this year...kinda like every other election year! None of the Independents, Libertarians, etc. are even good choices. This is pathetic that both Democrats and Republicans can't pick someone who is even somewhat worthy of being the next president. Neither of them could answer a yes or no question in the debate! I agree with Israel on this one. By the way...Israel will just use the nuclear weapons we gave them if Iran attacks.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

We do need to refocus and get our country back on track. These are God's chosen people and the land they occupy is theres. For years others have tried to take it away. The God of Israel is a loving God, but his wrath is something to be behold. The Old Testament points out many victories by David and his armies."The king kills his thousands, while David kills his tens of thousands" Why was David granted victory becuase he was on God's side, his enemies were not. And when David fell out of grace with God, (remember David was God's chosen warrior) God made sure he had he rear end handed to him and lost the battle. Moral of the story (and the Bible is not a story!) Those who support Israel are seen as favorable in God's eyes. Those that don't (Look at the example above) pay dearly. Want peace in the Middle East, Arabs, Jews, Islamics are all going to have to get along and restore to Israel what God gave them. Iran is a serious threat, especially with nuclear capibility. N. Korea is a huge threat, especially with nuclear capibility. Some of you are just finding anything you can to complain about. How about instead of bitching about all the things you see wrong in this country and how it's ran...hhmmm, I don't know; maybe go pick up a weapon and fight the war on terror. Do something for this country besides taking up space and complaining about everything you see wrong. This country is a great country, a powerful country, and a free country; many of which you take for granted. Instead of bitching about Israel and how you don't like what they are doing...hhmm, I don't know; do some reasearch on their belief system and the historical nature of their great country. If you have never been to the middle east then how can you truly understand how they operate. The answer is simple; you can't! The minute we stop supporting Israel will be the downfall of the U.S. Some of you would rather only care for those of the United States, but why is that? I'll tell you why; because your selfish. America has the greatest fighting force this world has ever seen, and I know from first hand. The world relies on us for help; and we answer. We have been given much, and to that much is required. Israel is our only true ally in the middle east. You say let Isreal take care of itself. That is like saying "Let Brittain allow America to take care of itself." Some of you people have absolutely no strategic insight on how we have stayed the most powerful country. It's not just because we are who we are. It's because we have had leaders, despite their indifferences, who have fought the fight to keep us allied with certain countries. It really saddens me to read what some of you wrote. It shows me the stupidity of many of you Americans and how much you take living in this country for granted. I pray that we do not ever allow Israel to stand on their own.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

what a bunch of stick your head in the sand weenies, and that's exactly what you'll get with obama. that's been proven not to work either. spineless!

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

western civilization was build on the"idiot" bible. so u might want to look into that. and somehow i dont think giving up more of israel's historic land . the only land the jewish people can ever call their to arab migrants. The iranians would have less leverage in the region than they do now, half of the muslim world wouldn't hate us, we probably would of got Binladen and shored up afghanistan by now, and pakistan probably wouldn't be in the turmoil it's in right now.

As far as the Iranians attackin Israel as soon as they develop a Nuke:
The Iranians want a nuke for 1 reason, to protect themselves from us (the USA). The nation of Iran has been in exsistance since the Roman Empire fell, they haven't attacked a country in a longer amount of time the we (the USA) have exsisted. In our short 300 year history we have sen't troops to almost every corner of the globe, for every reason. I think it's time we take a step back and realize that we (the US & Israel) are the aggressors in this situation. If we would only put a leash on the Israeli's and make them negotiate a fair peace (saudi peace plan) with their neighbors, and sign a non-aggression treaty with them they would back down from the Nukes in return for modest economic insentives quickly.
The crazy neo-cons don't want to negotiate with the Iranians because they want them to be a "threat" to us, how else could they continue to beat the War drum and make all that money for their buddies in the defense sector. So they take the ridiculos stance of we won't negotiate until you stoip doing what were negotiating about in the first place. The REAL problem is the muslim world wants Jerusalem and will do ANYTHING to have control over it. It is a holy war to both of them and they will go to extremes. We are a christian nation whether people like it or not we are. Radical Islam dislikes us because of this and waNts to destroy all jews and christian because their agenda is to rule the world. SO, WITH THAT BEING FACT LOOK IT UP FOR YOUR SELF IT IS CALLED RESEARCH NOT JUST BELIEVING WHAT PEOPLE TELL YOU.OBAMA WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR BUT HIS PAST SAYS DIFFERENT WHY WOULD I VOTE IN A LEADER WHO HAS CLEAR STRONG CONNECTIONS TO THE NATION OF RADICAL ISLAM TO RUN MY CHRISTIAN NATION????
If you are not Christian fine do what you want. If you are a christian YOU need to decide whom you will serve. OBAMA IS A SOCIALIST HE IS AN OPEN BOOK TO THIS. ALL HIS POLICIES LINE UP RESEARCH IT!!! OUR COUNTRY WOULD CHANGE FOREVER AND WE WILL LAND IN THE HAND OF ISLAM. NO FREEDOM TO DISAGREE LIKE MANY OF YOU WILL WITH ME. THAT FREEDOM WILL BE GONE, AGREE TO ISLAM OR DIE IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT??? if you think it is not possible how sure are you of that conclusion??? enough to take the chance??? Obama has nothing to show for his idle words they are just words. He and Michelle play the game very well. Please note... if you have no faith/religion then I am not talking to you. We need to concentrate on our own needs and advancing our own people.
Dave Rotundo, Queen Creek, Az (Sent Thursday, October 09, 2008 11:56 AM)

Saying 'Artifical Entity' would be applying your own personal theological opinion, rather than historical fact. Where did you come up with the notion that if the US stops supporting Israel the U.S. will no longer be 'put in danger of further strikes by Al Qaeda'?

This is nonsense:

First We're already a target, that won't change until Middle Eastern countries reign in their militants, Pakistani Madrassas stop teaching hate and murder (English class consists of chants 'Death to America'), and Wahabbism is deplored in Saudi Arabia! None of this will happen without US intervention. Whether that be leaning on the host governments, surgical strikes, or soldiers on the ground.

Also one would assume that the US relies on the Massad (Israel's CIA) for intelligence. If Israel disappears 90% of our Middle Eastern HUMINT human intelligence is gone....

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Any jewish person should know the best vote is for McCain. If they vote for Obama Israel will eventually cease to exist....

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Obama will surely sell Israel out to the Muslims. Wait and see. I don't believe Martin Fletcher when he says that Israelis are split in their opinions of McCain and Obama. If that's in fact the case, they are in a national state of denial, which is understandable. The media gives out ideas to terrorists and children who do school shottings. The republicans act irashionally and spend spend spend for their own personal interest. The people of the united states are just as guilty as bush for allowing him to come to power. This government is useless. I used to be proud to be an american but now I question that. I am crisitian and believe that israel should be protected. If they fall then the world falls into the hands of the anticrist. Its all profesied in the bnook of revelations in the bible. But then again I am not really happy about obama becoming president as due to the fact that I don't really trust his intentions. But if Mcain was to become president it would further destroy the u.s and its economy and lead us into the battle of armegedon. We are already in the last days. wake up people we have lost our morals. Between abortions and huiman cloneing, and all the crap the u.s does we are no worse than saddam Husein. Obama's not the best candidate but he's our only good option. the republicans have dominated congress for years. Clinton was the only democrat in years that we really had. He had us to the surplus but somehow in a matter of only a couple of years we were in debt. think about it. The democrats will bring us out of this. The U.s just needs to mind our own buiseness and and work on the probs here at home. the only Country we should defend is those who defend us. Bush himself is associated with terrorists why do you think he can get saddam but not osama. think about it. Those out there who don't believe in defending Israel as the biblical holy land simply because you don't believe in the bible or god. Well its people like you who have taken religon out of schools and further allow rediculous politics in this country. Thats why this country is falling, not because of a financial crises but because we have rejected god, the god who gave us and blessed this country. I'll bet our forefathers are rolling over in their graves at whats happening today in this country. This country was based and founded on cristianity. You can't even watch t.v anymore without ur kids seeing condom comercials and tampon comercials and things that years ago would never be allowed. And then we wonder why teen pregnancies happen and why there is school shootings while our children play voideo games intended to teach them to kill. What the bleep is wrong with this country. When sept 11th happened everyone turned to god and prayer vigils. Now that its passed and not the breaking news nobody needs god anymore. I only pray that god has mercy on you all who allow these things. You are the reason why this country has become what it is. What happened when thre people cared enough to fight a civil war to make change or womans suffrage. which by the way woman now have more rights than men in this country. A man can't even raise his voice and he goes to jail. these are the things that make me feel embarased to be american. I'd rather live in mexico than here, and soon I will be moving to mexico, I am not mexican but am just sick of the hipocrisies of this country. Mexico is not perfect either but theres a hell of a lot more justce there then here and the people there know what its like to bust their butts to survive. Here the governments spoil woman and give everything out on a silver platter and then wonder why we are broke and arrogant.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Hey, mmt in Louisville, how many Zionists do you know can prove they are related 3,000 years back to King David or Solomon or a tribe? Since 1948 the Arab states have expressed the same goal. Unlike naive Americans the Israelis pay attention to both history and the pronouncements of their enemies who threaten to destroy them. The Palistinians are hated by every other middle eastern nation, noteably Syria, Jordan, and Egypt who refuse to accept a Palastinian presence within their borders. The PLA under Arafat set new record for corruption and abuses of civil rights. Hamas is even worse and can't be negotiated with. Obama is naive beyond belief when he assumes that talking to murderers will bring peace. Has he forgotten the Palistinian mothers who encouraged their sons to become suicide bobmbers partly because it was sanctioned by their religion but also because Hamas and Iran gives cash bonuses to the families of those who blow themselves up and kill innocent people? The Arab doesn't think like we do and never will until they realize that it is hopeless to fight us with guns and bombs. If they ever enter the 21st century where, theoretically, reason and negotiation are used to solve problems then talking might accomplish something. As it is they talk from both sides of their mouths, expressing a yearning for peace while at the same time launching rockets from Gaza into Israel.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

What's interesting about Obama is that he isn't beholden to the pro-Israel lobby. Look at the facts.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Give to Israel what belongs to Israel and to the Arabs what belongs to the Arabs. Separate Isaac and Ishmael; the Arabs have plenty of their own land in which to absorb the Arabs who left Israel in 1948. Give to Israel the land (and the City of Jerusalem) which has been defined for them for the past 3,500 years.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

People, there will never be true peace in the middle east. The whole basis of the Muslim religion is to destroy the infidel. That being Jew and Christian. If we stop our support of Israel, it will just add fuel to fire of the already growing Muslim movement against America and God's chosen people. We've already moved in America in remove "God" from nearly every decision and to abandon Israel now would only lend to further trials for our country. I don't condone violence as a means to peace on either side, but let's not forget this a war that has far greater consequences that we see with our natural eyes. Russia's involvement in this region is inevitable, so we must do all we can to protect the freedom of Israel. I pray that whoever runs our wonderful country, that they don't forget the principals our great country was built upon, Godly prencipals!

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Oh you American's still believing you rule the world. So Israel, your happy eastern 'pals', supply you with a constant river of over priced oil.., as long as you OK their military actions against Iran with the U.N, warn the world even more of Iran's dastardly nuclear weapon program and keep that wonderful army of yours shootin' them damn Arabs!

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Look, here are some facts, but just like the financial crisis today, we have to come up with a current solution not based on what is fair. The Israelis were attacked by Palestians in 1967 and to their dismay the Israelis won. They Didn't STEAL the land. If on this basis alone we ahould make Israel give back the land, then California should give back its southern territory to Mexico. Or perhaps send the Jews back to Germany and give them their homes and businesses they had bef the Nazis' took it. The reality is that Israel should give back the West Bank and let the Palestinians create their own state. But make their oil rich Arab relatives put out the money to help them. Why aren't the Palestinians questioning this? The U.S. is a Western country that doesn't share their values. And why doesn't Jordan or Egypt allow Palestinians to immigrate into their countries. It is time for Arab nations to stop feeding Palestinians with hate in order to keep the spotlight off their own shortcomings. Let's all try and be level headed as there is plenty of blame to go around!

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Unfortunatly no American president will step up to the plate and demand that Israel cease its illegal occupation and return to the pre-1967 green line borders. Gaza is the world's largest prison. What i being done there is no different than Warsaw sevent years ago. Israel refuses to join the IAEA, sign a nuclear non-proliferation treaty or allow inspections of their nuclear facilities. Iran has done this. Israel continues to violate international law and countless U.N. resolutions. These are the acts of a rogue country that now wants to pre-emptively bomb Iran, the home of a large Jewish population. If Russia did that Irael would scream anti-semitism. The U.S. should never give Israel the go-ahead to pre-emptively bomb Iran. That is the Bush Doctrine in action and we've seen where that has gotten us.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

This is the United States of America. Not Israel. And we need to stop treating Israel like it is a part of the US. It is time for Israel to deal with its own issues and not rely on us.

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

If Obama does not get elected, you can count on an economy that has not been seen since the 1930's but on a much larger scale and we will be on the brink of world war III in the middle east since they rely on the U.S. so much for economical and political guidance.
Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

Real strong leaders are not measured by how hawkish they are, like McCain or Bush, they altimately yield a bad result! They elienate our allies, leaving us a lone. The result is what we´ve seen in Iraq and 9/11 . It is time to recognise that unduely hawkishness does not work, but worsens. Strong leaders should should be cool headed and smart and be dynamic with right judgements. Unfortunately, these are far from McCain´s credentials. Those who may refer to him as strong leader are not only the uneducated folks but people who might have the same character like him. The Israelis also would like to enjoy peace and tranquility that is why their Citizens are begining to consider Obama / Biden . l

Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

A writer on your blog said that Mr. Obama lack of leadership because he will cause Israel to go to war with Iran. Let me tell that reader that the last thing we need after the cold war,is a war President. We want a president who will not take side but rather get involve in a honest negotiation and solution of the problem in the middle-east. Everyone can see that the policy of Mr. Bush and his Republican party chair leader, Mr. McCain, took our country to war based on lies. If you think going to war will solve the problems in the middle-east, you are 100% wrong. One major break through to the solution for peace in the middle-east is not to take side with Israel, but rather, look at the facts. The second is to eradicate sufferings of the inhabitants of the middle-east, and not just citizens of Israel. Provide good living conditions, food, jobs, and the right to live side by side as inhabitants of the land. We all condemned horrible killings of the JEWS by the Germans, I believe the Israelis should be the last to inflict any form of harm to its neighbors. It is simply true that the reason the palestinians are behaving the way they do,are because they have no future, no hope for better life, and desparate sense of despair. We do not need a presdient whose first priority is to go to war. We need a smart and sensible leader like Mr. Obama, who is willing to look at the conflict in depth, and come up with a friutful and likable solution for both sides.

Thank you.
