If Israel is looking for a green lite to attack Iran, it won't get it-yet. There is still time for negotiation, low-level discussions at first, setting the table for high-level negotiations soon after. My feeling is it will not work, as the Iranian mullahs will remain obstinate. ANY strike on Iran will have to involve US warplanes, a massive strike that must negate thier ability to strike back. The problem will be the depth of the facilities that need to be destroyed. There are rumors of the US using bunker-busting, low yield nuclear weapons. There has to be a better way, but using 5 kilotons would accomplish the mission. Troop concentrations, armour, airfields, naval craft, all on the target list. It will take hundreds of planes, and weeks to hammer our point home.

Iran doesn't need nuclear weapons because they have the "oil bomb". Any attack by Israel or the US will result in counter attacks on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Without these shipments, which amount to something like 25% of the world's oil supply, and with Iran's oil production also withheld, worldwide economic collapse would result.
Our American love of high-tech weapons would be helpless to prevent the sinking of a couple of slow and cumbersome oil tankers and the economic chaos that would result.
The only sane course of action is to negotiate with Iran, who is quite willing to talk unless the precondition is to concede in advance the major issue, stopping all nuclear activities.

It seems to me that the world is headed for another world war. Israel will probably use Irac as a launch point to strike Irans nucular facilities. Iran has been to threatening with the US Navy, and the threats to attack American bases. The USA will not stand in the way of Israel as a war is going to be inevitable. The USA already has troops on both sides of Iran making for a good launch of troops into Iran. Syria will more then likely jump in on the action, and possibly Hezbolla. Then, we also got Russia gaining influence with South American countries. Chaves will most likely led the attack from the south while Russia will hit from the north. China, N.Korea,possibly Vietnam, and Indonesia will hit the west coast. Iran may well be the catalist igniting the next major conflict in these tough economic times.

I am really dismayed to see so many people having the impression that the US is fighting Israel's wars. In fact, Israel has never asked for anyone to fight its own battles - only for the ability to do so.

The middle east is a tough neighborhood and if you've never lived there it is really difficult to have perspective. While Israel is not perfect the reality is that the Palestinians, Iran, and Arab countries are ruled by either corrupt dictatorships or religious extremists who use the Palestinians in order to deflect their people's attention away from their own governments and so they don't have to deal with the Palestinians themselves.

If you know the modern history, it was the Arab countries that first rejected the UN Mandate and a Palestinian state because they thought they could defeat the newly founded Israel and drive the Jews into the sea.

Now, the same country rulers (especially Iran) are not interested in having the Palestinians make peace because it is against their own interests which is to spread their extremist Shiite Islam throughout the middle east. Israel is also a good distraction from their own domestic policies and problems.

Israel cannot mae a lasting peace with the Palestinians or Syria for that matter while the real intention is not peace but a respite to rebuild, rearm and restart the "resistance" against Israel. This is an exasperating situation for Israel to be in. For those that think Israel has been just killing and stealing know this: Israel has the military capability to bomb Syria, Lebanon and Palestinians to the pulp leaving little left. while Hezollah and Hamas fire at Israel from schools and villages they do so knowing full well Israel has the moral dilemma of not being able to fire back into those population centers.

This is not a simple issue and those that have simple solutions are fooling themselves.

The Iranians want a nuke for 1 reason, to protect themselves from us (the USA). The nation of Iran has been in exsistance since the Roman Empire fell, they haven't attacked a country in a longer amount of time the we (the USA) have exsisted. In our short 300 year history we have sen't troops to almost every corner of the globe, for every reason. I think it's time we take a step back and realize that we (the US & Israel) are the aggressors in this situation. If we would only put a leash on the Israeli's and make them negotiate a fair peace (saudi peace plan) with their neighbors, and sign a non-aggression treaty with them they would back down from the Nukes in return for modest economic insentives quickly.

The Palistinians are hated by every other middle eastern nation, noteably Syria, Jordan, and Egypt who refuse to accept a Palastinian presence within their borders. The PLA under Arafat set new record for corruption and abuses of civil rights. Hamas is even worse and can't be negotiated with. Obama is naive beyond belief when he assumes that talking to murderers will bring peace. Has he forgotten the Palistinian mothers who encouraged their sons to become suicide bobmbers partly because it was sanctioned by their religion but also because Hamas and Iran gives cash bonuses to the families of those who blow themselves up and kill innocent people? The Arab doesn't think like we do and never will until they realize that it is hopeless to fight us with guns and bombs. If they ever enter the 21st century where, theoretically, reason and negotiation are used to solve problems then talking might accomplish something. As it is they talk from both sides of their mouths, expressing a yearning for peace while at the same time launching rockets from Gaza into Israel.

Look, here are some facts, but just like the financial crisis today, we have to come up with a current solution not based on what is fair. The Israelis were attacked by Palestians in 1967 and to their dismay the Israelis won. They Didn't STEAL the land. If on this basis alone we ahould make Israel give back the land, then California should give back its southern territory to Mexico. Or perhaps send the Jews back to Germany and give them their homes and businesses they had bef the Nazis' took it. The reality is that Israel should give back the West Bank and let the Palestinians create their own state. But make their oil rich Arab relatives put out the money to help them. Why aren't the Palestinians questioning this? The U.S. is a Western country that doesn't share their values. And why doesn't Jordan or Egypt allow Palestinians to immigrate into their countries. Iran has done this. Israel continues to violate international law and countless U.N. resolutions. Let me tell that reader that the last thing we need after the cold war,is a war President. Everyone can see that the policy of Mr. Bush and his Republican party chair leader, Mr. McCain, took our country to war based on lies. If you think going to war will solve the problems in the middle-east, you are 100% wrong. One major break through to the solution for peace in the middle-east is not to take side with Israel, but rather, look at the facts. The second is to eradicate sufferings of the inhabitants of the middle-east, and not just citizens of Israel. Provide good living conditions, food, jobs, and the right to live side by side as inhabitants of the land. We all condemned horrible killings of the JEWS by the Germans, I believe the Israelis should be the last to inflict any form of harm to its neighbors. It is simply true that the reason the palestinians are behaving the way they do,are because they have no future, no hope for better life, and desparate sense of despair. We do not need a presdient whose first priority is to go to war.
