By Ian Williams, NBC News correspondent HANOI, Vietnam – Mention the U.S. election on the streets of Hanoi, and you are likely to get two very different reactions.
Among the young, the most common response is a shrug. These men need to hate their enemies in order to fight. We have to beleive that only foreigners can torture and beat prisoners. We do it too. I had to keep taliban on their feet for three days, shifts of course, for me not them. If you have never been sleep deprived, not a long work day, but days of fatigue, then you don't know, but it is torture. Your spine is racked with pain, screaming at you to lay down. You hallucinate and begin to repeat what you hear. McCain didn't get it any worse then our pows are getting it from us. reality is that the enemy is human. They have better things to do and understand that doing horrible things stays with you. It's unlikely that the torture that hollywood glamorized is true on a wide spread scale. McCains injuries came from the crash and the mob, and you know, if some foreigner was dropping bombs near my house, i'd beat em too.

Vietnamese back the man they know

McCain, yes you are a "Model Soldier." We need you very much at this moment when the World's peace is threatened and America is at war with our enimies. McCain has become so erratic It makes me wonder of his time as POW is still affecting him.

I will not reward him for being a hero any more than I will reward Obama because his race was once held as slaves.

Vietnamese back the man they know

I only wish there were more true Americans like John McCain. John Mccain himself wrote that he traded Military information for special treatment. In his own words he acknowledged that he broke the Code of Conduct under Military law. If you ask me, John Mccain should have been put on trial when he came back for aiding the enemy. In my view he helped them win that war. Some hero. He was their model POW. He makes me sick. This probably won't get blogged because it points out who John Mccain really is, a traitor. I understand with the war going on now that nobody wants to question his POW past, but he wants to drag out uglies from Obama's past that aren't even as serious as this issue. The people who wrote these negative comments about McCain have no respect for a soldier. Their hero is a man who never registers for Selective Service, who can't even be qualified for a security clearance. The reason he didn't register for Selective Service is another story that people should google and find out why. Now I see where this country is heading. How many of you personally know the Viet Cong to make any comments above? I can tell you by personal experience that you should not believe anything they say because I am a Vietnamese-American. Most of them are two-faced and lie and lie and lie. They are Communists. Just draw a conclusion by looking at Putin and Chavez's behavior.
They do not vote in this election so what they say is of no value, I don't understand why the reporter would was the space to write this article. Reading their mind I can tell you that they like McCain to win only for one reason, McCain has a connection with Vietnam and that would benefit them. They know that Obama would not waste one minute of his time for a country that is of no use for America, that would stab America in back any chance they get. Because the Republicans need the votes of all those old time Castro haters.

Vietnamese back the man they know

The skin color of both candidates play a role in the way Vietnamese (especially older people in Vietnam) think and not look at each candidate's record and policies. If you travel to Vietnam, you see alot more of Caucasian than African American tourists and they are exposed to that. Vietnamese in America are more tolerant and are more open. So I think is really bias and racially motivated.

Vietnamese back the man they know

Sen. That they want a person to lead our country with very little political experience over a women who has many more years of experience. Again, woman get put in third place in our country. They must be crazy the Democrats to think that the smart american people would vote for a person that has little political experience in this time of economic crisis. Clinton has many, many years of experience but the Democrats made there choice. Why would you want to put somebody in as President in these terible times that has very little experience. If you think it's bad now, if Obama gets in the white house with his years of experience watch out. Remember once our country had a depression look out america. This wouldn't be Obama's fault as the Democrats would say.Lets stop with the blame and fix the future and the future belongs with experience.I say we should and need somebody with years of experience the white house in these economic bad times. If the Democrated voters made Clinton there lead person it might be a different story. Now there is only one way to vote with experience in these economic bad times that we are in. I don't want somebody with little experience as my leader in this crisis, this is a no-brainer for your choice as president. People let's vote smart, not who is promoted. If it isn't Clinton then it has to be McCain this is a no-brainer for future hope.

Vietnamese back the man they know

For all the "red" blooded Americans who know the truth, please don't think that everybody in Washington state are sheep. So this War hero stuff is a crock of baloney. Yes, he got shot down and he was held captive. There are many who were in the same boat. And do nor give me the baloney they were fighting for our freedom. They were fighting to get control of a part of the Far East just as they are fighting now to control part of the Middle East. Let us not forget our Government has lied to us many times in the past. If McCain deserves to be president because of his incarceration then there are many more who also deserve to be President. With that being said, the people of this country can't nomiate a man just because he served in the service and doesn't let anyone forget it,it's as if he is saying we owe him and he wants to collect with the presidential seat. I don't believe he has any real knowledge about the economy or how to fix it. Let's face it, when your in the service the government takes care of that not the soldiers. He has a bad temper and until now i never realized how much of a liar he really is. I have no respect for any man who sends the women in front to do all and most of his fighting even if it is with words he's still a whimp and i don't think he is the one to run this country.

Vietnamese back the man they know

Yates in Houston ought to consider the vituperation the far "right" (as in wrong) heaps on the left and moderates before making such uninformed comments about the media. People, the Vietnam war was a civil war. Vietnamese were our enemy and our allies. It makes sense that after the war when the country became very "Americanized" they would identify with the young American pilot. It seems to me that the heroic thing that McCain did was to go back and try to help heal the country. Our soldiers are like kemotherapy, they wipe out the cancer but also destroy a lot of healthy tissue. That's a soldiers job. Everything heroic that McCain did in the war was the duty of a soldier. Many other people, bad and good, did the same thing. There's a difference between serving honorably and serving heriocly. McCain served honorably.
His young opponent also served honorably in the inner city of Chicago. That is also a challenging way to serve.

Vietnamese back the man they know

I'm "fed up" with idiots like Fed up, who sing the Palin song about Bill Ayers. If you do not like his politics, fine. If you do not like his platform, fine. If you don't think that he's the right choice for President, fine. Don't vote for him. However, the man is a war HERO by any definition of the word and the most important thing that he did while he was there was to SERVE his country with HONOR and come BACK HOME ALIVE. Those who have the audacity to say anything other than that about a man who spent FIVE AND A HALF YEARS in a POW camp should talk to a few people who've been in a POW camp and/or look through a few historical photographs of a POW camp(s) before you open your mouths and pass any kind of judgment on this man for whatever happened there; most of us would probably not have survived what he did. His loyalty or love of THIS country have never been questioned - before, during of after his stay in Vietnam. The man has spent his ENTIRE life DOING for this country - he has a record that is open, honest and available for review and critique - mistakes and all. Barack Obama, on the other hand, is a virtual unknown - with no experience holding an executive office and no real political track record of any length, breadth or depth. What he has actually voted on ("present doesn't count!") during his time in the US Senate has been right in line with the most liberal of agendas. Because, he's been too busy campaigning to become President from the moment he got elected to the Senate, to be bothered with much of anything else. Beyond that, Sen. Obama has had the freedom to choose all of his associations. And in so doing, he had NO problem being an active member of a church for MANY years, where the minister - his spiritual advisor, with whom he had a close relatioship - spewed anti-American messages in his sermons (and then remained unrepentant about it when confronted with it!) And, it was not until it became politically "disadvantageous" to remain tied to said minister that Sen. Obama severed ties and denounced him. This, in and of itself, may not be such a "big deal" - I don't know, as was never expanded upon. However, in addition to that there's now Bill Ayers, a known domestic terrorist who he has some sort of relationship with, as well as Tony Rezko, who has just been convicted on several counts of fraud and bribery and ACORN, who has made the news by trying to to fraudulently register voters (fraudulent because the voters DIDNT EXIST!) So, while Sen. Obama isn't guilty of anything just because he associates with people who are, one has to wonder if, when you add it all up, perhaps what you have is a gifted speaker who is very intelligent and highly motivated to achive a goal (become President) - who is also largely unqualified and who has a history of associating with some very "questionable" people - capitalizing on fear about the ECONOMY to detract from this and to promote himself and his agenda.

Vietnamese back the man they know

When did being a POW make someone the best candidate for President? I have two suriving WWII POW's in my family and they detest McCain.

As much as people find this story heart warming, I would guess that all that are praising McCain for thsi story also hated Kerry and would never have voted for him.

Stop with the blindside politics and note that regardless of this story the GOP will vote GOP and the Dem.'s will vote for the Dem. No Brainer...this story is just fluff for a losing cause.

The Ayers BS is just that too...if not, then why is it ok for McCain to accept monies from Annenburgs as they had closer ties to Ayers and lets not forget that McCain has ties to Paul Schenck who was meeting privately with Senator McCain. In fact, he received a VIP pass to the event in which McCain named Palin as his running mate and he met privately with each of them as well. Schneck has been arrested several times as well as advocates assaignations and bombings of clinics that comit abortion "Legally under our Law". That to me is a homegrown terrorist and still is one today! Nice job McShame. I bet Palin has a poster of Schneck in a speedo up on her wall idolizing him!

Vietnamese back the man they know

Sorry if this posts more than once...it didn't look like it was doing anything.

Sure I have a lot of respect for McCain for surviving a harrowing experience. But I won't vote for him. I'm an independent, and was having a real tough time choosing between Obama and McCain. I was undecided up until the point that he picked that wacko, scary, moose-hunting, wolf slaughtering, unqualified, lying, and apparently racist woman as VP. I don't care who what country supports him at this point, I don't care if he was a war hero - the choice Palin proved to me that he lacks good judgment.

Vietnamese back the man they know

That Obama supporters honestly think the Vietnamese have carried out a secret plot for 40 years to control the free world reflects badly upon their candidate.

What is wrong with you people?

Vietnamese back the man they know

By all means, we should honor the endorsement of McCain by the Vietnamese who once imprisoned him. Can a McCain endorsement from the Iranians, North Koreans and Russians be far behind? After all, these "friends" realize that with four more years of Bush/McCain economic policies and international diplomacy, the US will have declined further towards third world status. That being said, I believe Obama does want to change our nation to be a socialist dream, that is change. If successful, our economic model will look more like Russia's with command economy decisions. Unfortunately, McCain doesn't appear to know what economic model to prescribe to: much like Bush he bounces between free market and socialistic concepts.
