Egypt has cracked down very hard on Islamic extremism. Much of the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood is in prison. The main problem in the Middle east is that the governments help themselves too much and do nothing for their people. This is what has created Islamic extremism. The Bush Administration has handed billions to Mubarak but has done nothing to stop the persecution of prodemocracy groups in Egypt.

The president of the US really is the president of the whole world. US military and economic policy has an enormous effect on people around the world. Yet they have no say in who that president will be. They are left dependent on Americans to make the right decision.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

Sonja L. I am not going to say Bush destroyed this image, but I can comfortably say he has eroded our standing. I say Bush because he is the President. I have always believed that how we are perceived from without is just as important as how we are perceived from within. Bush didn't create the Arab/Israeli conflict, so that isn't his fault. But (the administration's) efforts were absent because of our obsession with Iraq. The Arab nations have been very much a part of the peace drive there, but because they do have eons old biases, it will be hard to garner support and trust between all parties until Israel feels confident that support is behind this effort. We're their only friend - either by default or by association, whatever. The Arab need the stability for their own reasons, but they and Israel can't work this out alone anymore - not when Israel is using our weapons, etc against the Palestinians. It is on our interest to help, after all, even if not for either part, are we not a great nation of problem solvers? Go America! I may not prefer Obama as my democratic nominee, but we have conferred a lot of hope and expectations upon him. He must deliver. If McCain is elected, I don't think anyone will expect anything, so the bar will be pretty low in terms of net change from the status quo.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

World citizens indeed- how about scape goats for the world.... having lived overseas for many years, there is not any 'true love' for us- just a calculation as to how much can be be taken for... many of the countries are not interested in trying to solve many of the problems in their neighborhood- they want someone else to and too often, the U.S., having this sense of 'be all to everyone', puts on their 'rose coloured' glasses and jumps in without testing the temperature or depth of the waters... Democracy will be sacrificed as long as Mubarrak does not challenge US policies. We need to be consistent in letting others practice the same principles of democracy, fairness & justice which we TRY to implement in our country.
Another glaring example of our double standards is our support for Pakistan's Musharraf, who put up a fascade of democracy, never kept his word, was hated by his public (last few years), but we were willing to ignore all these as long as he was willing to hand over Al-Qaeda to the US, w/o giving them a chance to defend themselves or providing them due process (they were kidnapped & simple dis-appeared). Ever been to the Middle East? Ever been to Africa or Asia? You sit here in America and pretend that you are on an island and that no one else matters. As an American that has worked internationally for the last 20+ years, I have seen our reputation disintegrate very quickly over the last 8 years even with our staunchest allies. The fact is, now, more than ever, it is a one world economy and that means that we need to at least understand, if not sympathize with all countries in the world, especially those that have been allies, and places where we have business relationships that last more than 4 or 8 years. We need to learn that it takes 10 times as long to correct an international situation than it does to screw it up in the first place. So that means it will take 80 years to fix the last 8 years....

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

I'm an American expat and have been living in Europe for almost 3 years. I'm a Republican who will vote for McCain and I'm 1000% against Obama. They fear McCain will continue the foreign policies of the Bush administration.

Americans can say, "Who gives a rat's a__ what foreigners think?", and I'd agree with them and take it a step further saying, "Who gives a rat's a__ what anyone thinks?" Why would you let anyone else influence how you'd vote? Vote for who you want. That's the point of our freedom to vote.

The thing that bothers me though is how pissy Americans are when it comes to presidential politics. Quit insulting each other and quit insulting foreigners and their countries. It's reflects so poorly on us. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. All the talk about the mid east's opinion on OUR election is of no importance. Especially Egypts, in this country they have laws similar to those of the jim crowe era, except towards Christians. It's so easy to blame the United States for your problems, but until the past few months the world economy grew at an unprecedented pace, so why is it that ordinary Egyptians didn't benefit? The most obvious answer is that they would rather complain about Israel and the United States instead of taking a hard look at their own government and its own domestic policies. Americans shouldn't worry as much about how Arab countries will view us because no matter what we do with our policies, ordinary Arabs aren't going to become pro-U.S. It's more important for us as a country to worry about how NATO, Japan, and Israel view us because these are the countries who have always supported us in the good and the bad times.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

Gee whiz, I wonder how much the average Egyptian cares about who I think should be the next President of Egypt. The rest either don't care or are envious.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

Great article: a much-needed reminder that there is a world of people out there just like us, who mostly like us as long as we treat them as we want to be treated.
On the other hand, it is frightening to see the many bitter responses from fearful, ignorant folks who don't realize they, too, have foreign counterparts: political extremists and religious fundamentalists who fear and hate everyone they fail to understand.
God bless the WORLD, including America!
Obama for President!

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

I'm just going to call it like I see it-If Obama was white this would not be an issue..Who in their right mind would want to go thru 8 more yrs of Bush's politics. There's a good reason for all of you why Israeli-Palestinian relations haven't been great over the past 60 years. How about we get someone in office who's respected by both sides, and maybe we'll have a fighting chance of finding a peace.
And don't say that foreign opinions and policies don't matter in our election. Plus, then we can send Palin to the far reaches of Alaska to keep an eye on Russia for us! The Republican party over the last 8 years has morally and now fiscally bankrupted our reputation around the word. I think one of the many lesson we can learn from Bush is that ignorance is not an excuse or an asset (take the que Palin). OBama/Biden is the only way to begin to rebuild the US - and I say begin because it's going to take a long time before our foreign and fiscal policies are trusted again; not only by the American people, but by the world community as well.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

Even more bias from MSNBC. WHat happened to creditable and fair unbiased reprorting in journalism? I used to have MSN as my home page but have switched due entirely to your continued slanted bias on all things political. I encourage all others who want to think with their own brains to do the same.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

To our dear friends in America,
We feel the same thing here in Tanzania, East Africa. First of all Obama and Mcain are both presidential candidates who are telling us everying we want to hear in order to swing the votes in their favor. They are listening to their advisors who tell them the majority of this particular group would like to hear this or that, or they feel so and so is an important topic. Once elected either candidate would have to face the gargantuan economic and international mess we are confronted with today. While my preference would be on Obama (I don't think he's the antichrist by the way, and just because you throw the word Hussein in there, it doesn't make it so. Talk about misplaced aggression and prejudice), Mcain would more than likely bend to the Bush school of thought which hasn't gotten us very far. The US has focused too much on other countrys' problems rather than ours and spent trillions on a war whereas that money could have been used to aid the American people/economy. Everything I said doesn't even scratch the surface or go into as much detail as I would like because of space limitations, but the bottom line is we need to get smarter about our budget and our choice of elected officials.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

Remember the saying, "you get the government you deserve.."? Living outside of the states for the past 8 years has been a real eye opener! We can only blame ourselves for allowing these people to represent who we are! The world doesnt really know us as people! And from what I've seen we're like everyone else in the world. We care about our families, how the bills are gonna get paid and where the food is gonna come from. With one great exception, we've become extremely greedy! Yes, we give $ away to other countries, that appeals to our sense of fair play and it makes us feel good but we allowed ourselves to buy into the gluttony of Wall Street that the Right Wing of the Republican party supported ever since they got a majority in Congress in the 90's and eventually the white house. They became corrupted by the Big Business lobbyists and allowed them to change the rules by which the Capitalist system is run and now it bears the fruit of deceit and corruption! In search of higher profits they took our jobs away and sent them overseas for a cheaper labor force and now the middle class is paying the price and the world also pays when the results are sub standard quality of goods (tainted milk, etc..). I could go on forever about this but the reality is that someone poured sugar into the gas tank of what we call the Capitalist system and a mechanic will say that the engine needs to be torn apart and rebuilt! We need leadership that will convince the public that we need to glean our system to bring it back to being fair and it needs to start with hearts and minds of the American public. And of course they would want someone who would be sympathetic to them and their cause. We don't 'NEED' Obama, a man who sympathizes with the Muslim nation and would like nothing better than a one world government, and the demise of the US. I live in a sovereign nation, founded upon the principals of the bible, governed by the Constitution. Yes, this country needs change, but not through a man who won't tell the truth about his past, (Obama), find out where his roots really come from. Do you want a man in the white house who loves the Muslim religion more than loyalty to the country he wants to run? And with only 143 days experience in politics (look it up). McCain isn't any better by the way. There are other parties out there who have men that believe in the sovereignty of our country and the law of our Constitution, why not check them out. And why is it, that when the world has a problem they want the US to fix it, and when we try, they scream and complain about the way we tried. It sounds harsh but my suggestion is, fix it yourself. I really wish people would educate themselves politically. Search out the truth, read, don't just believe the disgusting bias news reporting that the liberal media wants to cram down our throats.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

The moment America puts Egypt's concerns ahead of our own, we are doomed. The right to vote freely is sacred and we should not be intimidated or listen to foreigners who do not have this right or to the press who would inflate stories to pander their point of view.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

Wow, it's incredible how many people slam Obama and figure "the end is neigh" if he's elected into office. Here's one glaring reality you folks seem to be missing... If you don't like the job your president is doing, move to impeach him. And people want to blame the Clinton administration? Let's be real with it: 1. We had better world relations. 2. Our economy was practically in surplus. 3. The US prospered. What do we have now? That bailout is the big F-U by this administration that's on it's way out.

Here's some food for thought: If we weren't dumping close to 10 billion a month in the war effort, would we be in this financial mess? People scream "protect our country", let's start doing that by bringing troops home and fortifying our borders. And again, let's be serious here... McCain has about a 1 in 3 chance of kicking the bucket before his first term is over, which would put the Stepford wife known as Palin in charge (c'mon, she didn't even have a clue as to what the Bush initiative was). I'd be more understanding if the Republicans had a better VP pick, rather than it looking like she was picked out of desperation. If that even sounds remotely like a good idea, then something is really wrong and you need to do some research. At this point, we should be begging for some change to be brought about... Stop acting like sheep and open your eyes! Haven't these past 8 years shown you anything?

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

Americans are basically ignorant and carry a superiority complex . Words like "sole superpower" , "free world" , "third world" which border on steretyping the whole world are basically part of hte american pscyhe.

In addition american schooling leaves most if not all americans unable to understand culture differences or even relate to them.

Therefore I think someone who is somewhat multicultural like Obama is anyday a better hope than Mr Moron Bush.

and I am someone who has lived both in the US and outside it for years..so I know what I am saying.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

I can't believe the comments (attitudes) coming from Reps here. You can't help but notice that Dems comments are more intelligent and worldly. I believe that many Americans due to censorship of their media (they are 28th on 'Freedom of press' world list) and also the fact that 90% of Americans have never been outside of US have given them a confused view of the rest of world...an US verse THEM mentality.

There are many other Western nations besides the US
who are also rich, highly educated and enjoy a higher standard of living than most middleclass Americans. We do not and never have looked up to America as the 'Guardian of the gate'...We have always been FREE Democratic countries long before America became militarily powerful...we do share democratic values with US but only as equals.

The original role of US in Israel/Palestine conflict was as a 'Mediator' that was all...as we all know it got complicated as US clearly showed they backed Israel's which gave the other side no room to negotiate...They turned a blind eye to Israel's aggressive tactics. US is not the country to mediate because there is an obvious conflict of interest.

The illegal invasion of Iraq justified by lies to their Allies (weapons of mass destruction)and now thanks to our free press we know that it is all about oil.
I do believe that Iran, North Korea's nuclear plans should be contained but not by the US alone...rather a world treaty that applies to every nation.

Contrary to what most Americans think you do not send 'billions' in aid overseas...it's more like 'millions' just as every other Western nation sends 'millions'

Once a nuclear world treaty is signed...America should withdraw from conflicts and stop meddling in other countries..let them solve their own problems...in most cases it is Civil War.

They should stay right out of Europe..the Georgia conflict should be dealt with by Nato. Come now we are talking about VERY OLD grown-up countries that are experienced in how to deal with their own problems...They do not have to be led by US.
Let America look after it's own backyard for a change...Healthcare, Education, low taxes and just enjoy the benefits of globalization in terms of rebuilding your economy so every american can share in the rewards...It's a beautiful country with lovely people!

The world wants PEACE and they are certainly not interfering in US Politics by showing an interest in your election...Our world is BIG and we all like to know what's going on in it and to share and solve the problems together as we affects us all.

Barack Obama is a 'Born Leader and by divine timing he's the man capable of leading you into your bright future with respect and dignity restored without fear.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

I would like to address a series of extremely ignorant misconceptions that seem to be floating about here. It is absolutely not true that the Arab countries have done nothing to curtail the violence; in fact, on the contrary, they themselves have been a large part of the reduction of violence in the region (and yes, there has been a substantial decrease in ME violence in recent years, minus the Iraq War). As for regional leadership, Egypt has taken an extremely hardline stance against fundamentalism; not only was Egypt the first country to recognize Israel's legitimacy and sovereignty, the Egyptian government has actually outlawed any political party with strong religious ties (Muslim Brotherhood, for example). To say that the region is doing nothing to help itself is downright ignorant; is the US compounding the problem? Absolutely. Our presence in the ME is now being viewed with the same hostility as the creation of Israel had been. We are not here to police the world; we are here to help the global community of which we are a part - a fact we seem to have forgotten long ago.

Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

I used to live in Egypt and I would always hear Bush-bashing from the Egyptians.

G Feldman from New York, you are right that they are taking billions in US Aid, but they also blaim the US gov't for their corrupt gov't saying that we do nothing to try and help them with getting Mubarak out of office.
