After Saddam lost the first Gulf War, the repressed Shia smelled blood in the water and took matters into their own hands, in some cases street by street. Soon, cities in the South such as Basra and Karbilah began to fall into the hands of The Opposition. The U.S. stood by and did nothing. The same thing happened in the north in Kurdistan. In the South, Saddam's men strapped babies to the fronts of tanks and used them as human shields. They also bombarded the Opposition with their helicopter gunships that the U.S said was OK to operate as part of the Gulf War Truce. All to soon Saddam regained power. Thousand were executed and even more disappeared. In the North, the Kurds, the gasing still fresh in their minds from a few years earlier, fled into Iran and Turkey. Saddam leveled cities and the U.S finally stepped in, due mostly to TV reports on the goings on, because now that same gasing of the Kurds was suddenly a very bad thing. Remember the No Fly Zone? Saddam was effective during his reign because the people feared him. Death is a powerful motivator and it kept the people in line. A people that will strap a baby to the front of a tank or drop poison gas on their own are a people that we simply can't understand. Today the focus is on radical Islamist extremists and rightly so. The daily bombings and murder of their fellow muslims is horrific. Any cleric who teaches his students that murder is a virtue worthy of a reward is reprehensible. But during WWI and WWII, the unholy bedfellows of religion and politcs caused the death of millions of innocents. And this slaughter was carried out mainly among those nations that claimed to be "christian". Today the focus is on Shia vs Sunni. The daily reports of the brutality sickens me. But what about the so-called "christians" who slaughtered their "brothers" of the same faith just because they happened to live under a different government? Remember northern Ireland? How many Catholics and Protestants killed each other during that dark period? Remember Bosnia & Rwanda- both had so-called "christians" brutally murdering their neighbors during periods of attempted ethnic genocide. So to say that Christianity is the religion of peace is only partially correct. True Christianity follows the teachings of it's founder who advocated peace, loving ones neighbor, being no part of the world (and it's nationalistic conflicts) and leaving vengence to God. However, for the most part, the churches seem to have failed to impart to their members the true meaning of what it means to be a Christian. In times of national conflict, religious leaders have been all too eager to bow to the god of nationalism rather than obey the teachings of the Prince of Peace.
