But is it right to do so by silencing the natural grief and anger of Chinese citizens? Over 70,0000 people died - those scars will last far longer than the glitz and glory of the 2008 Olympics.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

Remember Katrina? Its devastation is much the same. Families torn apart, Lives ruined. Though our government did not try to silence its citizens , all else was much the same as in Sichuan Province. 3 months...6 months later...what do we do with the residents?, what compensation?, everyone was still scratching their heads as to what to do. And yet, sadly, the world moved on.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

Why do we so closely assist a nation who behaves in such a starkly contrasting manner from our own? Our assistance comes from participating in the Olympics and our favorable trade with this nation. It isn't our right to dictate to these people what we think is more just. It is our right to choose whom we do business with. What do we gain by doing business with China? Our arrogance is exhibited by our seemingly singular willingness to cast aside the model of the nation state to be some sort of altruistic collective. Its fine and good to be charitable but be so from a position of self reliance not from one of mutual dependence. Such charity isn't interpreted as such in the latter condition. Who wants to spend thier days serving food? Why can't we make our own toys?

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

This brings tears to my eyes. The parents choices to have children in any of those countries where the dictatorship is overbearing should make you feel sad, not their dying there but their living there.

Two, to not trade with that country, would only starve them all.

Three, Katrina's victims should look to themselves for living below a levee. My God when you looked up you saw the levee, they knew years before hand that was not a safe place to live, and they chose to stay there. And they want answers for what? Making their own choices? Like I said they need to look to themselves for their own answers.

Four, the socialist comment is right on. You want to see socialism at its worst, go ahead and vote in Obama. I have friends in Canada who have to wait on lists for medical help and some die before they get it.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

Let's keep this in perspective, this has been going on for centuries and until they seek GOD ( JESUS) there will been no change. Do you know how much aid the government shipped out to the victims of the earthquake? I was in China and these people were bringing out gifts, sobbing and thanking the Chinese soldiers who had helped them. You have such a twisted view of China bred from the VERY VERY bias media coverage from the US and Europe which consistently zones in on what's negative in China and will frame their articles to present China as an ultra-corrupt dictatorship at every opportunity. Ordinary Chinese citizens would be confused by your hatred especially since your government did NOTHING for Katrina while their governement did everything possible immediately after the earthquake. They are not living by the "gun" and you would know this if you had ever lived there. In terms of religion, my own grandmother, an evangelical Christian practices very happily in one of the nicest churches in Shanghai..you don't get shot for saying "god." It is sickening that so many Americans don't even bother to think and analyze what they read from the internet. You just hate something you don't understand and take WHATEVER these journalists and "human rights" activists throw at you. Don't pretend you care about the Chinese people because quite frankly, if they knew what you were saying about their country, they wouldn't care for your two-faced sympathy.

And for all of you human rights shouters, ask yourself what you've done for the Native Americans, who are still here today and were victims of one of the most atrocious genocides (cultural and physical) in history.
Ask yourselves why you never ask YOUR government to release POLITICAL prisoners but for some reason, you feel Their government must release theirs.
Finally, consider the number of human rights "violations" that Europe and America committed during their periods of industrilization and development so that YOU could now sit there comfortably on your couch and scream about human rights in other less developed countries..
None of you know ANYTHING about China's social or political history and you have no right to judge.
Let me just say that your concern and criticism of China's government is seen as sheer arrogance by every non-western country- You may feel it convenient to forget your govenement's past atrocities, and your so-called "fair and balanced" media may choose to ignore your current atrocities but other people are not so keen to forget especially when you criticize them for the same reasons...so save all this "oh i'm not watiching the olympics..i'm holier than thou...we're flawless B.S.
Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

The Chinese gov't certainly does not care for its youth and children, or, otherwise known as their great future. They made a spectacle out of the Olympics with a fake fireworks display. Then they forced an "ugly duckling", a very talented little girl who wasn't up to par, in THEIR opinion, to stay behind the scenes while a cuter one took all the glory for singing at the Olympics. And we're shocked about how their gov't is forcing the parents of their country's so-called future to sign away any rights they SHOULD have to get answers on why their children died in their schools?

I am grateful, yes, that we live in America where at least we still have the right to pursue answers to tragedies, but unfortunately with this next election we may end up living exactly like those poor Chinese parents who lost their children, their freedom of speech, and any hope of seeing their children succeed in life.

Like one Chinese parent was quoted saying in this blog article: You put so much time into raising your children and they were gone in an instant.

What a horrible country they must live in. I feel so sorry for those parents and shame on their gov't. I was no longer an American citizen. I was a "victim",refugee or whatever . People here lost families, homes, businesses and many left. Many of the elderly died in the months that followed.I am a nurse. I can not began to describe the smells, trash build up,and the burning (the red sky at night). I pray for the victims and survivors of the tragedy in China as I do for Americans all over this country that suffered lost through flood,tornadoes.etc. The thing which helped me during the post Katrina year were the Churches, doctors, nurses, and volunteers. These people left their homes and came to help. I can never say enough times THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU for giving your time and love to me.I will comment on some of the comments made which combined God and politics..I do agree we(Americans) should take care of our children and elderly .I do not agree that this is the place to make political statements.I have seen enough hate campaign messages . Sometimes people tend to see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear ONLY. The communism vs. capitalism differences between the two countries have greatly affected what and how US media show to US people. If you really want to know what's going on in China, if you really care about the rest of the world, please try to open up your mind and see for yourself.

China now is obligated to consider the Olympics as her top priority not only for her own honor but also for the entire human beings, and maintaining a stable society is a prerequisite. Moreover, the Olympics was not created to be a political tool but to be a union of the mankind, no religion, no politics, no races... By the way, mixing politics with Olympics is against the Olymipics spirit and ignorant (sorry, couldn't find a better word)... As a Chinese, I'm sure my goverment will do whatever it takes to investigate the construction matter and answers to the people(maybe it is doing that but NOT REPORTED) and people who had done bad things won't be forgiven. If you have seen how soldiers dug the debris by hand (equipment sometimes couldn't be used because of the subtle weight balance of debris) day and night trying to rescue more even if the hope was frail, or extensive donations from all over the country, or quick response of Chinese leaders (Premier Wen Jiabao went to the epicenter on the same day and conducted rescue on site for days) and real-time casualty report... you wouldn't say that Chinese government does't care about its people.

It's natural that there are people not satisfied with what government has done; it happens in every country in human history. There hasn't been one policy that could make everyone happy. The fundamental difference is that they are Communist and we are a Democracy. There is really nothing we can do to change that. We cannot force our own ideas upon the rest of the world. If we want to make the "world" a better place, then we should start with our home, then neighborhood, then city, then state. It won't do any good to blame anyone else. It is truly sad when any natural disaster occurs. If the parents really wanted answers they could have united and refused to sign anything or take any money. The whole event is sad.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

Please stop for those who are in China now. Honesty about shoddy construction and other factors that lead to such a high death toll should be out and public to help save lives in the future. Those who benefited from corruption should be identified. But, for all the world has been through the Olympics should always try to say out of politics. This is athelete's competing against each other and people cheering on their team without wanting to go to war if they lose a match. Olympics should not be tainted by politics - we all need a chance to share in our common humanity and if every event has to be dictated by grudges and judgments we'd be at war all the time with everyone.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

Both Katrina and the Sichuan earthquake were natural disasters. The main difference between the two (and, really, the argument-ending difference) is that in America nobody tells you where to live. Even if the government said the levee would hold it's still up to you to use your judgment. Me? I would have ignored what the government said and gotten out of town as fast as I could. Unfortunately, in China, the people don't have this luxury. Even if the shoddy construction of the schools had been pointed out years earlier it wouldn't have made a difference. The people there wouldn't have been able to do anything about it because the government controls EVERYTHING!!

Forget freedom of the press, religion or speech. The government controls the thoughts and actions of its people. The Beijing Olympics, though grand as they may be (I would have been disappointed with anything less as the government has unlimited coffers to delve into since it is not accountable to its citizens unlike most Western governments) are a farce. It's already been proven China will do everything within its power to win (even cheat by using underage athletes; RE: women's gymnastics). Anyone who believes they've turned the corner is blind, dumb or both.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

both very great tragedies. also for all those people thinking katrina only affected new orleans (which was not hit directly, mainly affected 2 days later when levees broke), remember mississippi and alabama coast suffered majority of wind and water damage. also that many people outside new orleans were living in areas judged to be non-risk zones (based on level of water after hurricane camille). and one more thing, is that this was water driven by wind, which pushed it further inland. so remember, is not just new orleans with many still homeless, just people forget so quickly. people were dying in hospitals and shelters in new orleans and mississippi due to lack of resources and shortage of medical personnel.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

"This brings tears to my eyes. This is a simple message, but one that I felt I had to add. "

To Christal Parrish (author of above) - DITTO! I hug my four wonderful children a little tighter these days.

There is little we can do from here but pray. May the Lord carry these parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, children...through while they try to find a way to breathe again.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

Um...am I the only person who saw that "70,000 dead" thing up there? The Chinese government believes that for the whole to advance, the stability is the most important thing, so it silences the complaints with force.

I can almost bet that after the Olympics is over, some government officials and contruction company owners in Sichuan who did the shobby building will be in trouble. Some will lose jobs. Some will go to jail.

However, Chinese government like to work in its own pace. They don't like to be told how and when to do it.

And I will also bet that the aftermath of the earthquake will come quicker in China than in US or any of the European countries. If the same thing happens in US, yes, the parents will have the freedom to speak out, will have TV time, maybe book deals, but the investigation will last five to ten years until everyone forgets (remember Katrina?).

Let's use ane example of earthquake - the 1989 Loma Prieta (6.9) destroys portion of the bay bridge. It took them 1.7B and 10 years to rebuild the on-ramp. However, the bay bridge is still unsafe and the new one, as of today, is still under contruction and won't be finished until at least 2013 (25 years later).

By the way, the Sichuan earthquake is 7.9, with 32 times energy as the Loma Prieta. If bay bridge is hit with a 7.9 earthquake, the whole thing will go under, not just a couple of sections.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

I just don't understand why everyone is so surprised by the Chinese government & their actions for these poor parents. That is the cycle of life. Everyone must leave this life behind at some point. Some go peacefully, some tragically, naturally or unnaturally, young or old, and sadly those little ones were called upon to return home. No one wants to let go of their loved ones and it's not right to ask the parents to forget them and move on. Unfortunately, they live in a country where the govt. dictates what they can and cannot do a majority of the time, if not all of the time. While I've been watching the Olympic coverage over there, I noticed that the Chinese people walking around on the streets seem to be very happy. I didn't notice any pain or suffering in their faces or in their eyes. And maybe that is because they aren't showing the rural communities that surround Bejing, but there are bad areas where people suffer in every country, not just China. It would be real nice if the Chinese govt. would spend a little more time trying to improve their country and take better care of it's people and the enviornment, because in the end, they may need those very people to stand behind them and if they haven't been there for the people, I doubt the people are going to be there for them. As for us and our govt., well, we may believe that we are a totally "free" country, and we may believe that our govt. takes care of our people, but, from where I stand, I'm seeing that slowly diminish, bit by bit, and what's even more surprizing, is that no one seems to notice it! Don't get me wrong, I love this country and everything we stand for, but I do believe that if we Americans don't wake up here soon, we are going to find ourselves being called United States of China. And we won't even need China's leaders to run our country, our very own elected officals are doing just fine. We will be working for them and, not them working for us!

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

The simple facts are this; whether our past is sordid or not, we have taken the proper steps in order to circumvent most of our previous mistakes- all in a timespan of less than 250 years. China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is mired in low standard of living and is titled a "developing country"; a developing country more than 1000 years in the making.

I ask that those of you who are stuck on the US's "holier than thou" attitude to step back and look at this country (the USA) and what it's done in it's short time frame, while other places in the world can't even get answers or pity for a horrible event.

And on a side note, Katrina is an unrelated event. Their were warnings before and when the storm broke handed down by the federal and state government- it was the local government who told everybody they'd be alright. China's earthquake was an uncomparable disaster- especially when you take into account the amount of money, labor, and relocation that went into the Olympic Plaza in Beijing.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

I think everyone should know that this region was not a very prosperous region to begin with. Roads and schools were built by the government by taxing other providences. I think they were lucky to even have the schools built.

Every country has its problems. Why don't we focus on our own nation's problems before we try to fix another's?

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

Well, remember that China is able too have this Olympic extravaganza at the expense of the American taxpayers = thanks to George Bush's destruction of our economy (we have paid China trillions in interest on the debt he has run up after he spent the huge surplus in our coffers when he took office), and Walmart enriching China for cheap, deadly goods (like toothpaste, pet food and lead tainted toys for children, etc.). This spectacle they are putting on is our tax dollars at work. They are not the only country with a government that doesn't care about it's citizens - Thank Good that Bush will be gone soon - maybe he could just stay in China now? He has certainly done a lot to improve their national finances. We cannot afford any more like him.

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

What the officials in China are doing is immoral. They are pretty much saying, "Let's pretend this never happened." Instead, they should be asking themselves, "What was so terribly wrong that caused so many innocent living, breathing people to suddenly be taken from this world? What can we do to prevent this from happening again?" By forcing parents to take down the small memorials they put in front of the schools were their children died, having them sign a paper saying that they won't talk out, and cleaning up the debris seemingly without investing; it seems as if they are saying, "We know that there was an earthquake, but we don't really care that so many people died and we don't want to put much of an effort into preventing another tragedy like this from happening again." I feel so sad that so many young, innocent lives were taken so suddenly like that! When I heard during the Olympics's opening ceremony about the little boy who got out and then went back to save some of his classmates because it was "his duty as hall monitor", I got all choked up at how brave that small boy's enormous courage! Now that I read this article, I realize that that boy is more courageous than the officials of his country! He must have seen some horrific sights when he went back to save some of his classmates, but the leaders of his country aren't going to try to find a reason as to why what happened happened? That little boy is a TRUE HERO! I am horrified that the leaders don't care about what happened! They should be ASHAMED of themselves! Those officials need to stop what they're doing and become students to the little boy! The WHOLE WORLD should stop what they're doing and learn from what this heroic little boy!!!!!!! We should ALL listen to this little boy's story so that we can learn to be civilized! I say, I am going to remember his story and pass it down, and I am going to learn to be a better person because of it! Are you?

Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

thank you, perfect docs
