Like many who live along Cuba’s northern coast, Ivis Gonzalez has been dodging hurricanes her entire life. But in the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, she came close to dying.

In the 50's we could have made a difference in Cuba but they had no resourses we felt important. Later we found we were wrond and instead of correcting the mistake we just blockaded the island so noone eles could profit from our mistake. It has been so long ago until the past two generations don't even know why we still shun Cuba. We can spend billions in a region that spits in our face but refuse to offer our hand to a island that never offended us. Remember it was the USSR that had the missels. If we had assisted Cuba when they requested our help the USSR would have never gotten in. It is time to open our doors and hearts to the people of Cuba. If a few down in Florida are still upset they should remember they are guest here and we are not obligated to their openion in any way. They have no respect for the country they have squatted in, they still act and speak as if they are in Cuba so let the cowards pick up and go back and get their hand out of our tax pocket.

Cuba braces for new hurricane season

Cuba has plenty of problems, but hurricane preparedness isn't one of them. After Hurricane Flora which cost them 3000 lives in 1962, the revolutionary government decided "never again" and they decided that leaving people to their fate, or in the hands of God just wasn't good enough. Ever since then they dumped the "laissez-fair" attitude which seemed still alive and well during Hurricane Katrina. There, people were advised to leave the city, but no provisions were made to get them out of harm's way.

While I wouldn't wish a hurricane on anyone, there do seem to be things we could learn from the Cuban experience, but we'd have to be open to finding out a lot more about that. I'm grateful to MSNBC for this report, but we should encourage anyone interested in how a society can cope with such challenges to go to Cuba and study their experiences. Washington goes all over the world trying to discredit the Cuban government, and to prevent people from visiting there. Instead, we should see if there isn't something we can learn from them. Cuba is the only place on earth, after all for which people from the U.S. need a permission slip from the federal government to check it out. How absurd that is!

Cuba braces for new hurricane season

in the US of A, we care not about human life we care about $$$$$. Yay us!
