I understand the parent's anger and desire to blame someone for it. A friend of my here in America had relative that lost a child to swimming pool. After period of extreme sadness, they started to blame each other.

We also must not forget that it was 8.0 magnitude quick. How many buildings could survive that level of earth shaking, no matter how well the building code is followed? It is highly questionable. Even in Japan which is very keen on building earth-quick resistant buildings AND had the money and technology to do so still saw a lot of buildings damaged during the Kobe quick. I often go to California where buildings and roads look so worn-out compare to Texas. I doubt many of the Californian buildings could survive a 5.0 magnitude quick.

My heart and sympathy go to the parents who lost their children and to all Chinese people.
Crying for the children, and for justice

I am so sorry for the deaths of these young and innocent school children. I am even saddened deeper when i read that corruption and greed, could have made this natural disaster worse, via shoddy constructiion and cost cutting. I would say to the parents to pray, pray and pray some more. God will fight your battles.............

Crying for the children, and for justice

China fortitude!

Please see the following Web address in the concerning the photo that true of China sichuan temblor:
http://blog.ifeng.com/706796.html
http://news.ifeng.com/special/0512earthquake/photo/
Crying for the children, and for justice

contractors cheat on materials all the time around the world. They are greedy

Crying for the children, and for justice

These poor people deserve some kind of justice for their children.

Crying for the children, and for justice

True, what happened was very sad. However, people have to understand that these schools were build many years ago. There is no "murderer" per se. Back then, they just have a different set of building codes. Besides, back in the days, China had to erect many buildings to house many people in a very short period of time. They are currently in the process of abolish old buildings for the newer buildings. Unfortunately, the rebuilding didn't happen early enough for these people. Truly a tragedy.

Crying for the children, and for justice

My condelences to those who have lost their loving children. I send out condolences to all families affected. But the real issue is that this has happened more than once and not once was there any urgency to try to correct the problem in other schools after the first incident, why not the other? The government knew that the building was old and not up to date with inspections and ordinances. Why not condemn it and renovate it? Or better yet...build a new school? I can't help but to think but because of the rapidly growing population of that country plus the vile way the government handles is affiars...wouldn't it make sense to 'knock' off the younger generations to 'control' population? Here in China the CCTV and some major online new outlets haven't(probably never will)reported such incidents. It's understandable that they're trying not to cause instability at this time. However, I hope people will not let those bastards get away with this once the situation is under control.I dare say over 90% of government officials in Sichuan as well as in other provinces of China are corrupt. CORRUPTION at local level, rather than a somewhat autocratic central government, is what anger the Chinese people most.

Crying for the children, and for justice

The families effected by this quake are in my thoughts and prayers. I cannot imagine the grief of the parents that lost their children. I wish there was something I could do for them!! I as a parent know the love of a child and could not imagine life without them! If an individual is derelict with respect to his or her duty, then that individual should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They made a very good point when they stated that the surrounding buildings were in fact still standing. To disregard them under the conditions; natural disaster or not is to devalue their life and the life they gave their children. If the govt. were at all compassionate and with any intelligent committee members they would address the mourners and at the very least move to establish better building codes for any future buildings that children may occupy. Please remember that we have a vast amount of knowledge today and have know how on better ways to build in fault areas. Ask any engineer what they think and outside of the date and age of the building and the codes that were in effect at the time of building, I believe they would whole heartedly agree with me. Hopefully the parents will pull funds and sue for new legislation. Not that I have any idea how that would work in China but thay definately have an audience and the sway of public oppinion to support that movement.

Crying for the children, and for justice

What a horrible situation for anyone to be in, and to think that there are thousands in that one area in the world going through it at the same time is just heart wrenching. Maybe now the Chinese locals will find a voice to rise up against their oppressive government. The leaders there enforced the one child only policy, claiming it was "what is best" for their people, and look where it has gotten them. Thousands of people's only children have died, along with them the hope of continuing the bloodline, passing their family name to future generations... it's enough to drive a parent insane.

Crying for the children, and for justice

I lived in China for 6 years and as a whole the public building is shoddy. the private sector very much 1st class. Nothing i can say. the building quality issue exists everywhere in the world. It is a time for us to inspect the building quality related to us around the world. Building quality is one of the most difficult things to monitor and control even you have very strict building code. Construction is one of the most corrupted industries in the world. Investors always cut cost and builders & constractors always try the best to maximize the profit as much as possible in any possible slot. Once everythign is covered, it is so difficult to judge the quality of the building against the building code. It exists in evry country.

Crying for the children, and for justice

I am so very sad that all these people have lost their lives, their childrens lives along with other family members. I am not surprised by the corruption. TO LOSE A CHILD is awful, to lose a family is worse, to lose a CITY is even worse..in Myanmar(cyclone) entire CITIES were washed away--no on to bury or be found. WE live in a world of awful TIMES...good times too, but AWFUL just seems to get worse. America has city destroying Tornadoes this year that are outrageous too. One of our Christian Songwriters and singers, Steven Curtis Chapman adopted a Chinese little girl..well three. ONE, the youngest was ran over BY ACCIDENT via SUV vehicle in their OWN DRIVEWAY. Life happens and it is sometimes GOOD and sometimes BAD...It sounds like the School was built below standard, which would give CAUSE for proper anger and justice. NO, it won't bring the kids back, but in the FUTURE--hope the Chinese LAWS demand for better building. May God grant new avenues of parenting for those who have lose THE CHILDREN and FAMILY members-teachers that were probably in the school, etc. As I drove thru the Blue Ridge Mountains the other day-awesome the CREATION of GOD to me!!! WE all need to do what we can to LOVE and HELP each other...and ADOPTING the nation of Myanmar/China/?? in our prayers right now and any way WE can help...WILL BE a good thing for mankind. Where trajedy happens, LOVE can happen too.......GOD grant them arms of love from those around them.....Being a parent of 3 in college, I can see the anger happening, SINCE the bldg was NOT up to par. EVEN an up to par bldg might not have collapsed, but AROUND the bldgs..OTHER ones were ok..SO>>>>>shame, shame on LEADERSHIP in the BLDG...GOING Cheap and inexpensive is NOT ALWAYS the right way.........My Prayers go out to all....tornado victims in America and Cyclone/Hurricane victims STILL in New Orleans and Myanmar, the ones just washed away..and CHINA..with aftershocks...all getting worse instead of better........GOD BE WITH OUR FELLOW MAN/LADIES/CHILDREN right now......as we mourn and grive with them and then DO what we can............................

Crying for the children, and for justice

Once again, however trajic, this was an earthquake of 8.0 magnitude. California has a history of high-magnitude earthquakes and has implemented legistlation to help make sure that our buildings and highways are as safe as they should be. This was especially evident after the 1994 Northridge quake. While noting that nothing is perfect, as a native Southern Californian I can say that I have confidence that my state will undoubtedly survive the next "Big One" in spite of visitors that only provide negative vibes. By the way, the biggest quake in Texas is said to be the August '31 5.8 tremblor near Valentine. How can that possibly compare to the rockers we've had in California. Not.

Crying for the children, and for justice

I SIMPLY DO NOT HAVE WORDS TO SAY ANYTHING. I lived there almost 3 years and they even made fake baby formula (to look like the real stuff) that had no nutrition so that many babies died for the sake of profit. Since most are atheist they do not pray to God but burn incense and money(fake not real) to idols. Yes it is a tragedy of great magnitude for those who only have one child and are too old to try again to raise a child, but perhaps they will open their heart and adopt orphans from other parts of China and stop the obese Foreigner from raising Chinese in other countries and lose the culture.

Crying for the children, and for justice

Ahhh earth to mr. My thoughts and prayers are with them. Compensation money is not likely to reduce their pain. Holding accountable anyone who is genuinely to blame and doing eveything possible to try to ensure that it won't happen again, is likely to be the only thing that can help. Knowing that some other parent won't have to know their pain because of the action they demanded might provide some solace in their grief.

Crying for the children, and for justice

@American, Texas, USA

I use to believe buildings couldn't withstand such vibration like a 8.0 quake. The thing is there are...Okinawa Japan and Guam (two places I've lived in) where typhoons up to 239mph (in Guam) quakes up to 8.0 in both places, all the building stood. Why? The building code required for these two places is amazing. In a house I'm currently living in in Guam recently had a two car garage added on. I was curious as to how it would be made so I watched. The ground concrete with rebar and I'm not talking one or two. The walls cinder block with rebar going into each one, followed by pouring concrete into the holes. The roof amazing...practically all rebar with concrete roughly 1 foot thick.

Buildings like these need to be built in hurricane pron areas like Florida and all of the Gulf region. Also, in California where the next "big one" could strike.

My question is why aren't they being built in the states? Why weren't they being built in mainland Japan? Why not in China? I know I'm not the only one that knows about structures like these. I wish someone could give me a good answer.

Crying for the children, and for justice

I feel so sad and painful about the earthquake. Granted that governments can and should do more to minimize loss of life the tragic truth is that no matter how much is done no one can really be prepared for even greater disasters. If this earth is the product of evolution then we really have no hope. in this life or of a life hereafter. If God is Creator then He alone knows what will happen in the future. We should seek to get right with Him. For now I suggest that we use this horrible tragedy to reevaluate our priorities and begin to love people a lot more and face the reality that life is never guaranteed for tomorrow. My prayer is that tragedies like these would serve to help us focus on the positive and build a better and kinder world.

Crying for the children, and for justice

The loss that many parents feel in this tragedy is made even greater when you realize that their only child is gone and that they are too old to have another child. Shoddy construction is not new in China. While working in China in the 1990s I witnessed many cases such as the bridge collapse that killed a police squad and others (See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/251723.stm you can also Google to find reports from Chinese news sources);

and the buckling of new highways such as that between Wuhan and Yichang and from Kunming to neighboring province... all very soon after the grand opening of these roadways; and cracks in other bridges over tributaries along the Three Gorges region of the Yangzi. A few "chicken heads" were cut off from time to time, but no great effort to stop wide spread corruption has been attempted. Hey even the cruise ship manager who stole her crews' food money (along with the ship's captain) not only avoided jail, but got a promotion to manage another ship! [I.E. see if she could steal more cleverly next time.) People in China are smart. They know who is doing what, but they do not have freedom of speech. Telling the truth is called "revealing state secrets". Young people do have much to take pride in, but the pervasiveness of corruption is not on the list. This has nothing to do with the Olympics or the greatness of China's potential. The central leaders must clean house and maybe take back a little tighter control of local officials. [Set a good example first.]

Crying for the children, and for justice

How did the contractor get permit to built those school buildings! I am a father of a 1-1/2 year old, and I cannot imagine the pain any parents would go through in losing their child!

I am also a general contractor of Chinese descend. I would have to agree that the buildings, especially the schools were built to sub-standards. It is given that in an earthquake of this magnitude not many buildings would be unscathed. However, in the case of many schools, there was no chance of escape, as buildings became rubble instantaneously when they caved inward. If a building were to meet Chinese building code, it should at least withstands some disturbance, and give people the time to escape. Even in the Chinese news broadcasts there were experts pointing to the materials used, as well as the method to which the buildings were constructed as being sub-standards.

Since I am a licensed contractor in California, I do not know much about building standards in China. However, it is common practice for construction companies to offer bribes to the officials in charge of construction projects in exchange for building/construction privileges. There is almost no fair bidding process. In addition, the actual construction is not done by the primary construction company, but sub-contracted out to other companies, at times with several layers of companies involved. At every level there is money exchanged hands, thus reducing profits at every level. As a result, many sub-contractors cut corners in order to make a profit and need to save enough to grease their "connections".

Comparing these buildings to tofu is no exaggeration. These buildings were death traps waiting to happen. I don't know anything will be done as the result of this tragedy. As one of the comments motioned that lives in China is cheap, especially someone from the poor rural areas. However, this will make every Chinese parent wonder about their own kid's school to be of meeting building standards, even the rich ones. I truly hope that something can come out of this tragedy and the government can learn from their past mistakes!!!! Rest in peace for all those innocent children, and may they be in a better place now!!!!!!!!
Crying for the children, and for justice

it's very heartquake disaster not only for the children, countless people lose they will,if we have any conscience, pls. hold our hand to help the disaster area people, use your heart to pray!

Crying for the children, and for justice

It's tragic, I look at the pictures and read the stories, and yet still cannot imagine what these people are going through. Not only must they focus on moving on, they must do it without their beloved children. I do not know who is to blame, for one we have Mother Nature. Let us first remember foremost that this was a natural disaster. However, if in fact that the number of fatalities could have been reduced if these schools and other buildings were better constructed, then yes I agree the contractors need to put to trial and punished accordingly. Unfortunately, too many times it takes these type of tragedies and devastation to occur for in order to make a wrong right. Too, too many times...and now it is at the cost of China's precious future. This will open the eyes of the Chinese government if it has not done so already...but at what cost???
