Michelle Obama frenzy hasn’t hit China, yet

BEIJING – OK, I confess. If a Web site features a photo gallery of Michelle Obama’s latest fashions, I click on it.

Like many other American women, I have a certain fascination with our first lady.

So there was a frisson of anticipation when we learned President Barack Obama would travel to China. Would Michelle come with him? What would she wear?  Not red, surely? What about when she met Chinese leaders?  Or when she met Chinese people?  (Had anyone here noticed the fact that she chose a dress by Jason Wu, an ethnic Chinese designer for the inauguration? Even though he was born in that renegade province, Taiwan?)

SLIDESHOW: Michelle Obama's effortless style
As it turns out, Michelle Obama isn’t visiting China.

It also turns out the Chinese public doesn’t have quite the same fascination with her as many others around the world.

Absence of media coverage
"I don’t really pay attention to her," was the common reply when, in an unscientific survey, we asked people on the streets of downtown Beijing what they thought of her.

When we tried searching for "Michelle Obama" on people.com.cn, a popular chat room in China, we turned up no results.

And the absence of coverage of Michelle Obama in the Chinese media is noticeable compared to how much attention she receives from the Western press.

"She has been overshadowed by Obama," said Li Xin, a former international editor of a Chinese financial magazine which has profiled Hillary Clinton but not Michelle Obama. "Chinese media coverage will pay more attention to substance – what will make a difference to policy toward China rather than who [the Obamas are as people]."

Media observers say President Obama's star power overshadows that of his wife. By Adrienne Mong/ NBC News

The Chinese media, according to Li, doesn’t have the same propensity to humanize politicians or to try to put a human face on them. "And to some extent, Chinese media are not allowed to probe too much into political leaders’ lives," she said.

Moreover, Michelle Obama has no counterpart in the Chinese realm. "The wife is usually backstage and doesn’t come out and send a message by [herself]," said Li.

So while the Obamas may be viewed as something of a rock star couple on multiple continents, in China they’re "just the couple who occupy the White House," said Hung Huang, a publisher and television talk show host in Beijing.

And it’s the ease with which Michelle Obama became first lady that may be why she doesn’t get too much media coverage in China. "Her lack of controversy probably is the primary reason there is a lack of interest," said Hung. "Everyone just says she’s a nice person, she’s beautiful, she’s powerful, she’s married to one of the most popular presidents in U.S. history…OK, that’s it!"

Michelle Obama: ‘Too strong’
But there’s also another reason some people were willing to comment only anonymously. "I think Chinese people find her a little scary," said one 30-year-old female Beijing resident.  "She’s not that attractive to us."

Li put it more diplomatically. "Michelle Obama is seen as feminine in the U.S., but in China the perception of beauty is very different," she explained. "The Chinese standard would maybe prefer someone softer, more petite. She’s so strong and independent and tough. [I’ve heard] from some co-workers and friends, they don’t see her as pretty and don’t understand why she was on the cover of Vogue U.S."

"In Chinese culture, the Chinese don’t actually appreciate a woman like her," said Qu Wei. The 43-year-old freelance consultant is a self-professed fan of the first lady. She said Michelle Obama represents a new refreshing female ideal who telegraphs the message: "When you’re getting older, when you’re ageing, you can still be attractive."

Adrienne Mong / NBC News
The Chinese aesthetic, says some Chinese media pundits, is "skinny" – as seen on the covers of these magazines.

Qu reflects a narrow demographic which does find resonance with Michelle Obama: urbane, middle class Chinese women who are professionals tend to think highly of her skills and values as a mother, a strong partner, and an independent woman.

"This is really the opposite of Chinese culture where men only appreciate young girls and don’t really know how to appreciate women," said Qu.

And while Vogue China may not have put Obama on their cover yet, editor-in-chief Angelica Cheung said, "She represents the new woman and the new Vogue woman, which is what I’m trying to promote here, too.  A new woman looks good and has great taste, but also has a great career …and has a very rich life."

All of which makes it all the more of a let-down for her fans in China that Michelle Obama didn’t accompany her husband on his state visit.

"Yeah, I’m very, very disappointed that she’s not coming to China," said Qu. "I would like the Chinese to start knowing something about women like Michelle Obama, not only in that narrowly-defined [traditional] way."

Wow anyone should know better than calling Taiwan a "renegade province."  It is a de-facto country that is not a "province" that the Chinese govern.
Wow.  So basically they are normal in China then?  So they actually have lives and don't fawn of a woman for no real reason?  Fancy that.

Although if you wish hard enough Ms. Mong, maybe, JUST MAYBE, people will care.... but don't hold your breath - some of us have lives to care about, not what the first lady is doing/wearing.  Idiot...
Check out this funny post: http://barackoflove.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/china-just-called-to-say-i-love-you/
(There's lots of Michelle-related info on the site, too)
"Chinese media coverage will pay more attention to substance – what will make a difference to policy toward China rather than who [the Obamas are as people]."

Gee! What an amazing concept.  Wish our media would try it.
Thank God! I for one am really sick of the Michelle coverage. While it seems as though she's probably loved very much by her family, and I'm sure she'll be a very good first lady, ENOUGH ALREADY! Really, she's not doing anything more than any other wife of a president.
We've had mothers-of-young-children in the White House before.
We've had good-looking women before.
We've had well-dressed first ladies before.
We've had well-educated women before.
I think we've even had President's and their wives who have loved each other before.
So please, can we just STOP!
I think President Obama is absolutely right, when he indicates that the "true" measure of a nation is how it regards, and then treats its women, girls, and boys (children).  We have much to learn, if we are to survive as a species: the first one that can also, self-destruct.
Mrs Obama is a breath of fresh air to the presidency of our country.  I'm a white male in my 60s and I admire her for her moxi, intelligence, creativity, care for children of all stripes, and the way she looks at her husband.  They are made for each other and that's love.
God forbid that anyone or thing should ever harm them!
I do not understand her popularity. Of course he should overshadow his wife, he's the president!!! I care more about what he is doing than what his wife is wearing.
Chinese people are known for their racism and prejudism against people of color especially women.  I am a woman of color I grew up in a chinese area in the states and I have seen this firsthand my whole life.  Chinese find dark skin extremely unattractive and distasteful.  I knew of a chinese lady who felt she had to clean her house after her kid brought a black kid over after school.  That's why they don't care for Michelle obama.
As far as I am concerned, the frenzy hasn't hit here, either.
Look at the Asian women here in the US. Some do not like looking Asian. They prefer to look European, because they have bought into the concept, that if you are European you are beautiful. No worries Michelle you are an "original" concept of intelligence, beauty and class.
A fascinating insight into Chinese social thinking.
Ummm.. very interesting perspective.  I myself have not understood all the hoopla regarding Michelle but after reading the Chinese opinion I am forced to acknowledge I do respect her as a powerful, intelligent woman and that in itself here in MY country garners respect from many just like myself.  As an ordained woman minister I know there is still so far to go until a woman is listened to and looked at with a balanced view and opened ears that are not plugged up with pre-concieved notions regarding women in authority.  I live here in the United States and it is an even starker reality for women in the world at large.
She and the President carry themselves very well.

MRS Bush (a nice lady) always looked like she bought her clothes at Walmart.

Barack/Michelle destoryed the Bushes in the Election and fashion. They do need to stop going out on those 100K plus dates at the taxpayers expense though, bad form you know.
I think it all boils down to the fact taht Chinese are still very racist and view themselves as a homogenous society.  They are accepting of the white Western ideal, but that does not extend to Michelle Obama.
Too True, she is just living there, like Hillary:) Totally different culture, wives are subsurvial to MAN.

Patrick
The problem may be that Michelle's skintone is too dark for many Chinese. I just read another article about how the Chinese worship the West and white beauty. How they use skin lightening products and creams on their faces. It's too bad that the Chinese can't appreciate a woman with curves, height and beautiful cocoa skin (which does a wonderful job of hiding blue, red and green veins just under the surface).
And, this is a big surprise given what we know of culture in China?  I think the author sums it up well saying that the wives of China's leaders stay in the background.  Sorry to support the stereotypes but I think they hold true.  Women are not regarded highly in China.  Taiwan is a completely different story ... well maybe same book different chapter.  They have their problems with women too.
I am SHOCKED at Mrs. Obama's AWFUL sense of "STYLE".  Mostly, her selections are dredful, like the "Gunshot" silk thing that appeared a few days ago, and the "layered sweaterss"...fine for a soccar game, but NOT for entertaining in the W.H., let alone MY HOUSE!!
Who cares about Michelle Obama.  She is just a woman, a mother and a wife.  She is NOT a superstar. I don't know hy the media is trying so hard to push her on us. I don't like anything about her that I have seen so far. LET IT GO ALREADY!!!!
Aha, So, It seems that some in China would like our first lady to look like them. Blonde with blue eyes.
Seriously, It may take a while for China to recognize that America has a half, Black President and all Black first lady. After all there are some in America who still can't handle the fact, AND WOULD LIKE TO MOVE TO cHINA. Lastly I would like to give a shout out to our former Pres. If it were not for his inability we would not have our new Pres.
You mean not everyone in the world loves and adores Michelle Obama?  Watch how many Obama lovers post angry posts about it.  I have to agree though, she really isn't very attractive.
Not everybody in the USA finds her fascinating or attractive either.
Can you imagine the first lady of China echoing the words of Michelle when she was on the campaign trail, "I've never been proud of my country."
As per another article on your website which talks about the deeply engrained racism in China toward black people, The people in China are not interested in Michelle Obama because she is a black woman.  Their idea of beauty is the Eurocentric viewpoint... white skin, thin lips, aquiline nose.
Oh please, Chinese have just started to reconciled the fact that the U.S. has a black president. Now u want them to take in a strong American woman? Despite of her economic might, Chinese are still backward in term of gender and STILL prefer to have a son instead of a daughter. Watch for how many top female party officials will tell the story.
The so called "western fascination with Michelle" was created by hysterical media types, Oprah drones and Hollywood bottom feeders. She's all hype, no substance. Good mother?? Good mothers don't guide their children to hate spewing lunatics like Rev Wright. It equivocates to a white mom taking her kids to a Klan rally every week. If the Chinese knew what Americans know about Michelle, from her words, they would be as shocked and outraged as the vast majority of Americans.
Democracy put the most popular and likable people in political positions.  Meritocracy put the most capable, and qualified people in political positions.  US is a democracy, China is a meritocracy and have been since Confucious(that's more than 2000 years ago, couple of hundred years before Christ).  Frankly meritocracy makes much more sense because a country shouldn't be run in the same way as high school.  :P
We have read about the Chinese distaste for people of
color.According to a recent African American- Chinese female only Caucasian Westerners are  considered
attractive and many Chinese Females bleach their skin.So to be honest it is race again that causes people to feel superior and consider others to be inferior . We love Michelle she is our first lady so why are we concerned about how the Chinese feel about her?
Who Cares?
The media seem to forget that it is the media that is fasinated with the Obama's, not most of the ordinary working people.
Disappointed, MSNBC, that our "dear leader" is not worshipped in other countries?  Even here in America we wonder why the first wife needs the largest staff of any first lady...What does she do again?  In China, such decadence and excess usually leads to execution for raiding the public coffers.  An example we could learn from!
When I visited China as a young student I found significant racial prejudice against Africans and African Americans such as myself.  I think mostly because they were so far and few between in China.  I welcome the opportunity for Obama to bring better understanding to the Chinese people of African Americans such as myself.
Michelle is a beautiful woman but the fact is that is staying in background and out of the news.

She would be more probably in China if she is in the news more.  I wish she she would be more active - she has better ideas than many of Obama's advisors.
we didn't elect mrs. obamaa, so why the hype on her not going to china? the pres's wife isn't that  important that the us citizens should bear the expence of her seeing the world.
Effortless??  Please.  Even a fifth grader recognizes that the woman is incredibly short waisted and should avoid those ridiculous belts.
Those Chinese women that think Michelle is not beatiful shows just how narrow their thinking is about women of color in America.  They are used to seeing thin, White women grace the cover and pages of magazines--how terribly ancient minded and old fashioned those Chinese woman are who commented, "she's scary."  Today's women like Michelle signify how far women of color have come to be recognized for how beautiful they really are.  This is not anything new because Cleopatra, Queen Neferitti and the Queen of Bethsheba were beautiful women of color with power, and they were not scary.
I think she should be on the cover of Vogue simply because she is the First Lady and a stylish one. Old? No one noticed how old our previous first ladies were and looked. I happen to think she is beautiful but my opinion about her looks shouldnt factor my views of her. If this is how the Chinese judge people they seem appear to be very superficial and we should be careful with our associations.  I find this article very distateful and disrespectful of our First Lady.

I guess nobody noticed that the First Lady is a mother of very young children, why should she disrupt their normal routines everytime her husband goes on a business trip.
Michelle Obama is an incredible first lady, mother and wife. We are so fortunate to have her representing our country. It is good to know that that the professional, urbane, middle class Chinese women think highly of her as well. Mrs Obama is very admired in Abu Dhabi, where I currently reside as a citizen of the United States.
It also doesn't help that she's dark.  China is a country where women are encouraged to lighten their skin and it's a huge industry there.  I used to think that the American standard of beauty was narrow until I spent time in China.
I think this is widespread throughout Asia. My Korean friend; who is tall, fit, muscular, and very beautiful; was telling me that she is seen as very unattractive in Korea because she isn't petite and stick thin. The Japanese exchange students at our school, however, look frightfully skinny and talk non-stop about not wanting to eat anything and get fat. I think they go too far to look like little girls, personally.
Having gone to Juillard School, 1947 to 1949, each friday night, their were concerts by the students who attended the school. The audience then was filled with so many Chinese men and women wearing their Chinese long straight colorful tight collar traditional dresses. They enhanced the audience and a full display of chinese fashion then.
Modern and more western designed clothes appear as the norm. Still, I forgot what they are called, were striking to see a beautiful women in her Chinese fashion.
We are in midst of change. I am excited for President Obama and Michelle, the first Lady, be the leader of the free world. The hard cell does not always work. You first have to gain one's trust, before they allow you in.

I am a Black woman living and traveling throughout Asia, and I am struck by the fact that despite years of awareness of other ethnicities, races, and cultures, many people in Asian countries hold Caucasians up as a standard to emulate in all aspects of daily life. Caucasians are featured prominently  in marketing campaigns for everything from fast food to beauty products. I think the difficulty Asian societies have with Michelle Obama and even the President may have more to do with racism against people of color - and less to do with the degree to which they identify with traditional/non traditional roles of women in society or with the differences in size. White women (Hilary Clinton) in Europe and other parts of the world have long filled many non traditional roles in business and politics, and have redefined the identities of women in any modern society who balance careers and families in equal partnerships with men. This is also not about size, because strong powerful White women also come in Michelle Obama's size. Historically, many Asians have perceived Caucasians as more intelligent, more beautiful, and more competent than non Caucasians, and have imported racist ideological rhetoric from America about these same attributes to incorporate into the core of their beliefs about non Asian ethnicities.
Not every culture and social more translates. Chinese don't socially view women the same way as us. Go figure, they just don't care about the president's wife. It doesn't fit the social system that's worked for them for thousands of years. This is not a story, but a journalist goading the american public to feel about a non-issue in a guided way that leads to a response that has no real American relavance.
11/17/09 According to wikipedia..Vogue China's first released as the 16th edition of Vogue(magazine published by Conde Nast with partnership of the state owned China Pictorial Publishing House first issue in Sept 2005 had Australian model,Gemma Ward, alongside Chinese models and wikipedia displays the issue that has Russian model Sasha Pivovarova..The msn.com article mentions nothing about which magazines in China have featured any of USA's former "First Lady"(e.g. Jacqeline Kennedy, Betty Ford). It is good to know that 1st Lady Michelle Obama is seen as intelligent and forthright.11/17/09 andreabjackson@hotmail.com
