Obama gets mixed reviews in China's blogosphere

BEIJING – It was President Barack Obama’s first full day in China, jammed with morning meetings with city officials in Shanghai and afternoon sessions with central government leaders in Beijing.

But the headline event was easily his town hall meeting with a group of highly vetted students in Shanghai, during which he also took several questions submitted over the Internet. China’s blogosphere – the world’s largest with 350 million Internet users and 60 million bloggers – was buzzing before, during, and after the event.

Among English-speaking residents across China, the reaction veered between scorn and disappointment, particularly over Obama’s comment, "I’m a big supporter of non-censorship." He said this in response to a question about China’s Great Firewall, the online filtering and surveillance program run by the communist government’s Ministry of Public Security.

U.S. President Barack Obama greets participants in a town hall-style meeting with future Chinese leaders at the Museum of Science and Technology in Shanghai on Monday.

"It pains me to write this…but Obama’s performance this afternoon reminded me of nothing so much as an overly coached American businessman on his first trip to China, so concerned about what he should or should not say that he forgets what he wanted to say in the first place, and ends up going home with nothing but a hotel bill and empty promises," Adam Minter, an American writer, wrote from his home in Shanghai.

On Twitter, which along with Facebook continues to be blocked in China and is accessible only through a proxy server, Western commentary also took exception to the foreign media coverage of Obama’s speech. One disgruntled Twitterer wrote: "Guardian headline sez: Obama criticizes internet censorship in China. O Rly? He only obliquely, generally endorsed online freedom."

But another Twitterer made the point that by simply mentioning these issues Obama is raising some awareness. "If Obama’s visit has let more CN ppl know twttr & www censorship, it’s not in vain."

Indeed, within minutes of the president’s town hall meeting, the top two Chinese Google searches were "What’s Twitter" and "Obama Shanghai."

Still, it’s unlikely that Obama’s speech was seen by very many people in China. It was not broadcast live across the country on television. Instead, it was shown on local Shanghai TV and streamed on two Internet portals, but the quality wasn’t very good.

Even hours after the event was over, we at NBC’s Beijing bureau had difficulty finding decent video of Obama’s town hall meeting on the Internet. It was available on whitehouse.gov, but many Chinese users complained about the quality of the video stream. It was also available on Facebook, but that wasn’t much help since that site is censored in mainland China.

'He’s such a great speaker!'
Still, reaction from Chinese bloggers who did manage to see or hear about the speech was a bit more varied than their English-speaking compatriots. The chat forum on China’s number one Web portal, sina.com.cn, received more than 10,000 comments from all over the country.

Quite a few Chinese netizens heaped praised Obama.

"The president is very eloquent and smart. He’s such a great speaker!" one wrote. "President’s Obama’s speech is very pragmatic! He’s not only based on American interests, but also of the world! He’s the most impressive leader in American history, and we can feel his deep thoughts and the responsibility he’s carrying for human progress!" wrote another.

Other comments were short and more cursory. One blogger wrote, "He’s so young and cute!"

Still some expressed doubt over what can possibly come from Obama’s words. "Obama is a great speaker, but the Sino-American relationship is not built on words. Chinese are not just listeners; they are partners too. Don’t say one thing and do something else," wrote one blogger.

"Why does trade protectionism always follow big compliments to China? And when will America stop selling weapons to Taiwan?" wrote another.

And another wrote, "We don’t need America’s support or opposition to take back Taiwan…this is our internal affair and the U.S. should stay neutral."

Other netizens expressed dissatisfaction with the questions asked by students. "Why do the students only ask such soft questions?" And, "Why were Tibet and Xinjiang not mentioned at all?" Another wrote, "Such low-level questions! Poor college kids!"

These unhappy commentators may have been unaware that all the students invited to participate in the event had been cautiously hand-picked days before the meeting.

However, just hours after the town hall event, the "students" who posed questions became subjects of China’s Internet vigilantes, who take it upon themselves to investigate people in the public sphere suspected of corrupt or immoral behavior. Marked for their unfettered zeal, the literal translation of the Chinese term for this ad hoc group of sleuthing online activists is: "human flesh search engine."

Many of these amateur Internet detectives pointed out that the "first student" who asked Obama a question, Cheng Xi, is no ordinary student. Cheng is actually deputy chief of the Committee of Communist Youth League of Fudan University, in addition to being a student.

Dear China,
Please excuse our president.  He's an idiot.

Love,

America
If Chinese internet users actually manage to get to uncensored content, we'll see some better, more informed comments.
"I’m a big supporter of non-censorship." Right, if you exclude trying to get FOX News kicked out of meetings with Admin officials, not accepting any interview requests with the Prez and trying to get other news outlets to ignore their coverage. Big Supporter? Sounds more like BS.
Please can't you people just try to be NICE PEOPLE FOR ONCE! I think you are mean and judgmental and closed minded. President Obama is a good person who is brave enough to try to do the right things for the right reasons, no one is perfect but if you TRY to love others instead of hate MAYBE JUST MAYBE our world could have less anger, rage and violence.
We Need a president with the guts and fortitude to cut off all chinese imports and stop sending them american cash which they use to build weapons to threaten us and they also are using to corner the markets on oil and natural resources, all this is being done to hurt the us in the long run, believe me the chinese envy the us  greatly and want to see and help along our demise to prop themselves up as no. 1.
Whatis with you reporters? always so damn negative,  Starting this article in a confusing way as if it is the Chinese who are down on Obama,  It is only his own people who never like anyone who takes risks for the futur eof the country.  Start reporting news, not your freaking feelings. I am so sick of it,whether it is Bush or Obama, you are manipulative beasts in a dying society.
"President’s Obama’s speech is very pragmatic! He’s not only based on American interests, but also of the world! He’s the most impressive leader in American history, and we can feel his deep thoughts and the responsibility he’s carrying for human progress!"

Wow... i dont even know how to respond to that comment.  Most impressive leader in American History?  Move aside Lincoln, Jefferson, Grant, Washington and Dr. MLK - apparently you were all decent, but didnt measure up to President Obama.  Wow... just wow.   He's good, best since Reagan - but he hasnt done anywhere NEAR enough to be called the best ever in history.
That's all right. Obama gets mixed reviews over here.
You must be kidding me, eloquent speaker? he stmbles over words and works very hard to say nothing more than a few catch phrases and the average Joebob american is too uneducated to realize that.
So MSNBC isn't covering the bow? I didn't believe any of those nasty Republicans untill now.
I guess MSNBC, unlike Obama, believes in censorship.
To Gary from Baton Rouge:  Just shut up already and go back to watching SEC football and paying your college football coaches more than you pay for all your libraries combined. Louisiana is not only the laughing-stock/arm pit of the nation but its State Capitol absolutely stinks and air pollution is so bad, fruit trees will in North Baton Rouge will not yield.  I know becuz I lived there unfortunately for 5 agonizing years.  Umph!
By being elected as the 1st black President of the USA, Obama is already a big historical figure. I would say second only Abe Lincoln, and no one else.
This is a weak post. The top half of the comments seems to be full responses of Americans living in China. While the translated Chinses responses are just single liners not unlike what you find on Youtube.

Also, the WhiteHouse said the town hall meeting was "a meeting with future China youth leaders" there was no mention they had to be students. So what's so incredible about a member of the communist party youth league asking a question, seeing as they'll be part of the future leaders of China...
I guess Joebob American was pretty uneducated for the past eight years.
How mixed is mixed reviews? Is it more like 90% unfavorable to 5% favorable?? That can be still covered under "Mixed". Honestly.
President's Chinese name:  Oba-Mao
Obama doing nothing more than Jive talking.  All he is missing is the orange liesure suit, a fuzzy hat, and 22's on his limo. His mouth moves but nothing of value comes out of it. He says a few empty "I have a dream" type phrases and the Brotherhood all sing Amen. He should start talking in rhymes like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Dr, Suess.
Interesting choice of quotes and blogs.  Hand picked audience at the town hall?  Sounds like a Bush "town hall" meeting of yesteryear.
the young folks, particularly those in university, are more world-wise than this article and posts give them credit for. There is access to uncensored content through proxy servers and such and the government cannot possibly shut it all down.  How much they try depends on what is going on at the time.  The net censorship is aimed at controlling the masses access to information.  but when the students get it, it's out.
What if Mccain won and spoke in front of those people in Shanghai ? Do you think they'd say the same things ?
Obummer needs to stop selling his image and get back to this country and start creating jobs!  At least Michelle is working with kids in Denver today.  Jobs are more important right now.  People without enough food are at 14%. What will it take to get this communist to work on REAL problems that affect our people?
CG is rather ill-informed.  President Obama didn't try to kick anyone out of anything.  In any case, Obama is a good speaker, but not great.  He strikes me as someone that is extremely aware that everyone will pick his words apart and it shows.

Of course, that is only natural.
I believe it is time instead of looking forward into the twenty-first century but go back a few decades where we all watched our favorite TV shows. The media today just creates negativity and is causing us not to be united as a nation. This is a problem!
CG from Keller Texas- Fox isn't granted interviews because it is not a news organization.  Sure, they may call themselves Fox news, but that doesn't make them a legitimate news network.  The network is only a propaganda outlet for Republicans, intent on smearing the record of anything the Democratic party does.  Fair and balanced is everything it is not.  They didn't cover the tea party protests, they promoted it.  That isn't objective journalism.  You wonder why the White House doesn't grant interviews to Fox?  If they were fair and balanced as they claim, they would be treated like every other "real" news network, and print publication.  Fox news, they should change their name to Republican News Network.
America should be proud to have somebody like Obama as a spoksmen and president of this great country. I listened to him on C-SPAN answer all questions with great eloquence. His comand of facts and fluidity was something to see and hear. Just think if we would have had two disasters in Mcain and Palin>. We would have been a world laughing stock. This man is amazing and Amerika will be much better for electing him.

life time ex REpublican
Telling people Fox news is a propaganda machine is not censorship.  But you being from Texas explains a lot.  I assume you don't understand what the word 'censorship' means.
HOw can you say Reagan was a great President? He caused more damage to this country and economy then all presidents combined> What planet did you come from? Remember Reagan was an actor. His presidency was merely an ACTING JOB>
Much about nothing. Full of sound and fury but signifying nothing. Must be a Democrat or Socialist?
Oboma is an embarrassment to the citizens of the Untied States.
My gosh how is this country ever going to heal and get better when there is so much hate between ourselves??? Bowing is that countries culture respect it, we would expect someone to respect our culture
My the higher power, GOD, Jahova or what ever you want to call it/him have mercy on us for we humans do not know what we do!!!
NO censorship?

How can I believe NO CENSORSHIP in U.S?
C'mon, there is more important things to accomplish here in the USA. Why is Obama on the other side of the world speaking Chinese? (other than we need to borrow some more cash to support our out of control spending).
OBAMA is going to sell us out to China.  Remember all the good products that come from them such as poisoned dog food, lead painted toys, toxic dry wall.  Our politicians are nothing but crooks put into office to make a buck.  You can compare them to a prositute.  They will sleep with anyone to make a buck.
As far as American Administrations are concerned, he is the best we've had since Roosevelt, plainly and simply, Republicans can hold a candle. The Chinese understand that completely!
i love obama and usa,i hope to togather American and Chinese.
Let me see if I got this straight. President Obama is lecturing the Chinese about human and civil rights while at the same time he's trying to clamp down on free speech and freedom of the press here at home. Slick move by the Hypocrite-in-Chief. This would be humorous, if it wasn't so sad.

I didn't vote for the president,  I could do better than   Obama can, so remember next election vote for me foxfish
I'm not a big Obama fan, but I have to say he didn't do such a bad job. China is not like America. Subtle mentions of something are far more likely to see results than calling them on something in a very public arena. It's the concept of losing face.
Having lived and worked in China I can assure you that the Chinese will become the top dog in the world within 50 years and the US will be only slightly more powerful than the UK is today. This is because our Congress is self indulgent, our Presidents have no world vision, our people are under educated and we are only too willing to sell our secrets and souls for a buck.

The only way to reverse this sad trend is:

DON'T RE-ELECT ANYONE IN CONGRESS FROM EITHER PARTY NEXT YEAR.

Whay BS , he not a President of the US but more like a liberal professor at Berkley . Who care about the internet in China how about the 800 billion we owe them. Grow up Obama !!!!!

"Please, stupid Chinese, keep lending the US money for our wars! You know we good for it. Haw-haw! Suckers!"
Obama is not Reagan. Don't expect him to say: "Mr Hu, Tear Down Great Fire Wall!"

"The bow" isn't being covered because it isn't news. Got paranoia?
It's not possible to have everybody on your side- especially, when it comes to politics.
If Obama truly believes freedom of speech, he should encourage millions of Chinese to tune to Foxnews Network!
Hey Bob Sacamano. Not to be petty or anything, but why would you criticize Obama's speaking skills when you know very well as most Americans who don't live under a rock, that his predecessor's speaking skills are perhaps the worst of any other president. Plus, we should all focus on his political issues and not so much on the way he speaks.
I remember Camile Pagra (I may not spell her last name correctly) always says that Obama really represents America well on international stage. Wathing this trip, I don't know what she was talking about. We csn call it "Asian Kow-tow trip"
