Beijing puts foot down on ‘Oba Mao’ T-shirts

BEIJING – Liu Mingjie expected that President Barack Obama’s first visit to China would bring more business to his little boutique shop in Beijing’s popular Houhai area, a lakeside district filled with trendy restaurants and bars, souvenir shops and lots of tourists.

Until last weekend, Liu had been interviewed by both Chinese and foreign media about what he was selling: T-shirts that superimposed Obama's face over that of China's late Chairman Mao Zedong on the front, and the words "Oba Mao" on the back.

But Lui’s brisk business was suddenly terminated by local government officials, just days before Obama’s arrival in China, without any explanation. He says he was simply told, "No, you cannot sell Obama T-shirts anymore."

Liu Mingjie shows off the “Oba Mao” T-shirt he was selling out of his shop in Beijing, that is until the authorities told him to stop.

While the culture of mocking celebrities and politicians is not yet widely embraced in China, the possible embarrassment brought to the president of the United States by having his image on T-shirts dressed in the uniform of China’s infamous Red Guards, who caused mayhem during the Cultural Revolution, was too much of a ticking bomb for local officials. Liu doesn’t know when or whether he’ll ever be able to sell his T-shirts again, but he’s not the only one who is confused and upset.

Qi Zhiyong, a former factory worker who lost one leg during the crackdowns on student demonstrators 20 years ago that culminated in the infamous Tiananmen Square protests, has found himself suddenly forbidden to talk to the media and has been followed by plainclothes police for the last few weeks.

VIDEO: 'Oba Mao!' China gets ready for Obama's visit

However, after protesting for two decades, Qi is used to constant harassment and forced silence during politically sensitive moment,  like the Beijing Olympics in 2008, last month’s 60th anniversary of communism in China and Obama’s upcoming visit. Qi and other dissidents are routinely locked up or kicked out of Beijing by the police to prevent them from talking to foreign delegations or the media.

‘I don’t care’
But while Liu’s and Qi’s lives have been temporarily derailed by the president’s visit, the general public in China hasn’t showed too much fervor over it.

A survey by China’s leading Web portal Sohu.com and the English newspaper China Daily asked, "What’s your viewpoint on Obama’s visit to China?" Almost 40 percent of respondents said "I don’t care" or "I have no expectations."

When asked "On what issues do you think China and America will reach more agreements after Obama’s trip?" 56 percent answered, "I don’t think the two countries will reach any more agreements."

And when our NBC News team went to Wangfujing, one of Beijing’s most popular shopping areas, to speak with people about Obama’s visit, more than half of the people we approached were unaware he was coming.

However, in our unscientific survey, those who were interested in the visit agreed on what they cared about most: trade. And according to online surveys, more flexible trade policies and communications between the two countries are the top concern of Internet users.

Knock down the Great Firewall of China!
Chinese bloggers and Twitter users actually have great expectations for Obama’s trip. Their hope is that the so-called Great Firewall of China, the online filtering and surveillance program run by the communist government’s Ministry of Public Security, is torn down with a push from the American president.

"President Obama did stress that he is going to talk about human rights with President Hu, which is a big surprise to a lot of Chinese intellectuals," said Bei Feng, an activist and blogger who was invited by the U.S. Embassy to a briefing ahead of Obama’s arrival. Dozens of other bloggers joined the briefing on Thursday and raised many of the issues they are most concerned about.

Bei is optimistic about the Obama’s trip but remains cautious on what Chinese netizens can expect out of it. "A small portion of Chinese intellectuals do believe if President Obama is willing to talk about human rights with China, it may spur China’s democracy progress. But in fact, if you rest your hope on a foreign president, it’s not practical. It needs our own efforts."

Still, out of all of China’s 1.3 billion residents, there is one who may be looking forward to the big arrival most: Mark Obama Ndesandjo. He is Obama’s half-brother, a Kenyan businessman who lives in Shenzhen, in southern China, just 15 minutes from Hong Kong.

Beneath the spotlight of both Chinese and Western media, Ndesandjo published his first book in China last week, "From Nairobi to Shenzhen." The semi-autobiographical story is about his personal journey from Kenya to China, with a lengthy account of the allegedly abusive father he shared with Obama. Ndesandjo is reportedly already on his way to Beijing to meet his half-brother.

ok, way to use this as a way for you to bash China!!! It's obvious that the Chinese are trying to prevent something that the Chinese find "cool" (combining Obama with Mao) from being used by right wing Anti-Obama people in the US to call him a "communist"...but of course, a gesture of good hospitality and going all the way to help one's honored guest is simply "another sign of Chinese repression" to you people. It just goes to show how stupid you at MSNBC are about China.
I m sure everyone from the tea party would like to get one of those shirts.
Wow! I wish I had one of those tee-shirts of the Great Party Organizer! At least the Chinese know one of their own when they see one!
What happened to free speech ?
This is for Chinese and American netizens.  Please check out this speech given by Kaiser Kuo at the University of Nebraska Lincoln on online clashes between Chinese and American netizens.  It's very informative.  Please watch it.

I know that the far right crazy, insane, over the top, bible thumping, anti Obama everything Republicans will be on this like stink on a warthog. It makes me so sad to be associated with them in the same party. I wish there was more Moderate Republicans out there that I could look up to.

It will be sad when people see Obama in Chinese Revolution garb and say that it proves he is a socialist or a communist. No, its an artist depiction of Chinese Political figures and they see it as honor.

But its another shame that China has so much control over freedom of speech, especially in today's world.
Thats where we are heading w/that Great Socialist Oba Mao . He's here to ruin are country that are father's so bravely fought for . To keep people like Chairman Mao from taking us over . GOD HELP US !
all the people in China care about is trade, More money. They don't care that they have no rights.
And Obama's agenda is to take away more of our rights.
More government control.
Oba-Mao? Sounds about right.
China's day-to-day focus is more inward these days-- getting into the best schools, finding jobs, buying cars. One example: I remember in the 80s and early 90s, Beijing taxi drivers would talk knowledgeably about world leaders and the nuances of international politics. Nowadays the capital's taxi drivers tend to talk about traffic jams and their work hours.
Too bad they cracked down. I'm sure a lot of Americans would love to have one.
It is too bad for the Chinese people who desire freedom that this administration will make no effort on their behalf. Certainly, I am most saddened about this president. Certainly the t-shirts are far closer to the truth about what our government is now standing for.

It is unclear whether the quotations from the Chinese citizen's interviewed reflect a genuine understanding of the current US administration or just a truly jaded view of Chinese and world politics.
Finally truth in advertising - and it comes from China. (like we didn't know it already)

Well, what can I say? Even communist China associates Obama with Mao's communist ideology. Wealth distribution, chastise the success of middle and rich class. The Obama and Mao have more in common than Obama many on the left are willing to admit. The real difference is that Mao was upfront and you brave enough to declare China as a communist state. Obama, on the other hand is sneaking his flavor of communist through the backdoor.
If Obama had his way he would re-institute the Fairness Doctrine to quiet those who oppose him. Americans are already losing their freedom of speech when it comes to Christianity.  I am only an average American watching what is going on in my country and what is going on is an aggresive move towards Socialisn.  If Obama has his way we will all be Lui Mingje.  I didn't vote for the Trojan Horse.
I read last week online that Mark Obama also had a white American mother.  If he is from Kenya, does that mean that his white American mother lived or still lives in Kenya?  Is this something that the U.S. media missed last year, that Obama'a father had more than one white American wife?  While Mark's book probably exlains all of this, I am surprised that MSN has not written more about this.
Obama on another trip, I am so sick of this man and his administration , 2012 can not get here fast enough, one term he will be,
I want liu Mingjie's shirt, "Oba ma". where can i get one online?
Well they would not be too far off track
I want a T-shirt.
Please try to get me a couple of these in large.
I hope he does'nt come back, seems like a model country
for his socialist ideas.
Chairman Obamao...Yes, indeed. A picture is worth a thousand words.  Thank you, China...for visualizing the truth about our inspired leader,er, comrade Chairman....
We all need to learn how to get along with each other, so more communication is better.  China is bound to have a major effect on us as long as we are wearing Chinese shoes and driving Chinese cars. If the economy is global then there is nowhere to hide from import/export agreements.  I am glad Obama is aware of these things enough to personally visit China.
We Americans, over the past fifty years or so, have become fat, dumb and lazy.

Fat?  Just look around.  We are the fattest nationality in the world, and growing ever fatter and sicker - very sad considering how much knowledge we have available to us about good health practices.

Dumb?  We elected Resident George W. Dumbush a second time even after it was clear to all thinking people that Iraq was never the threat that Dumbush and his favorite Dick made it out to be.  Note also that to enjoy those delicious tax cuts that Dumbush always touted we have stopped teaching our children gepgraphy in many high schools.  The predictable result: most of our high school grads can't find the United States on a map of the world unless the countries are clearly identified!!!!  Chidren in Sri Lanka and South Africa score higher in mathematics.  That is not funny if you are a truly patriotic American and not just a flag-waving moron.

Lazy?  Be honest!  How many Americans spend any time voluntarily learning new things just to improve their general knowledge and overall competence?  Very few!  By contrast, how many Americans, even during their work day whenever they can, spend hours surfing the net chasing mindless, sit-on-your-ass, Britney Spears crotch-shot type of entertainment?  Millions!!  Whom do we pay well?  Entertainers, football players and golfers - not scientists, teachers, or nurses!!

Am I right?  BE HONEST.

Well, the Chinese do things differently.  They work very hard, are discliplined, and save as much as they can and then invest it.  Is it any wonder that they are easily passing us as we stumble towards the future???????
China,,,,The Largest and Financially , the most Powerful Nation in the World. The only reason America is ever interested in any Foreign Country is to serve Their own interests.
I,m sure that MacDonald,s and Walmartand Ford and GM CEO.s will not be too far behind.
Now who do Americans think that They are that They can question China about Human Rights?
    That is just laughable.
Frankly, I think Obama is proud to be associated with Chairman Mao.
where can i get one of theses t shirts
I would like to buy one of the t-shirts...are they available?
I'll take 3  1-XXL  1 XL and one L

How do I order????
at least the chinese seem to make the connection!!
OBAMA, THE GREAT WESTERN COMMUNIST LEADER!!!!
if the chinese are trying to change and embrace democracy as far as they can please give them a break. next time you hate the chinese ask who is financing your house , your credit card, and your foreign suv.think people !
i find this all very very interesting.  HUH--I thought everyone in the world loved Obama except me.  What a shock!!!

This is no simple marketing scheme. The China man sees no discrepancies with his combination world leader. The same spirit of authoritarianism and control in China is consuming America.

Don't forget, though, that the Chinese Tyrannicus Maximus believe that one of their great strengths is patience. They view America as a temporary inconvenience and opportunity to be exploited.

Keep watching the methodical, sub-media radar development of their military. And, by the way, you may forget Korea, but they haven't.
Obama knows well and fully approves the cost of government dependency by the people. "Human Rights",  "Politically Correctness" and "Global Warming" are some of the catch words used for brain washing and instill in us guilt and allow them to flourish.

Like the left elite in Europe they have sucssefully launched a campaign against capitalism, white males, corporations, business owners, banks and insurance companies. Hollywood and the press, very much dependent on the government as the rest of us will be very soon, address the future with blind folds while lyong all the way to the bank and engage in campaigns such as the latest movie 2012, where the poor souls will now think that in China is our hope of survival.

Do you really think Obama needs to bring the issues with Human Rights in Cuba, China, Iran, Venezuela or Korea? Those that have claimed and required past Presidents to make this a first priority, are now busy on creating the conditions that will see our future generations being manipulated like the Chinese people have suffered in the past.
.....Our president's solution for health care is to impose fines on those who don't have insurance (and will they put us in jail if we don't/can't pay?)  Yes, comrade, I want one of those shirts!!!
China has produced generation after generation of shrewd businessmen...a strange paradox duly noted by us rightwingers.  They came to America to build the railroads in the 19th century wearing straw hats and loin-cloths...and their children became bank owners. Recently, the Chinese bought oil at twice the going price; which forced American businesses to raise their  prices on manufactured goods...Giving China a real trade advantage.
Interesting that there are some in China making these T-Shirts as a sign of respect to the President. Yet right here in these United States, Mike Church has been(since last year) making his own T-Shirt sporting,(gasp)"Chairman Maobama". A Liberal friend of mine critized me, a Conservative, for wanting to wear one of these shirts. Why? It's a sign of disrespect and amounts to nothing but name calling according to my friend. Just seems like the Chinese truly know one of their own when they see him.
Wow, with all the other stuff we buy made in China, this is it!  I want one!
The Chinese autocrats are missing a chance at huge profits here.  That t-shirt would go absolutely viral here!   Big Renmimbi!
I hope they arrested the guy who was making money off of Obama name.
OBA-MAO,Uh,I supose over there he can look uponit as a compliment,- Here he can callit an insult,Hay, Changes in latitud, Changes in atitude. Its right up his street.
Everyday I read articles on or about him and hope that is in rush to change America and sideline American fundemental concepts that he will commit that one act that will allow for his impeachment.  That there is some arguement that will be sucessful in removing this empty suit, lying, pretender from the presidency.
OBAMA, OH BAMA, SLO BAMA, NO BAMA, GO BAMA
I'm sure Oba-Mao will be talking to them about human rights. Like how can the Chinese help him erode human rights of Americans.
MikeChurch.com
He's been selling these shirts for a long time.
Now, if only the Chinese would produce decent products instead of all the junk American stores buy to sell at top dollar.

I have yet to buy anything made in Chins that was any good.

walmart, etc. does not care about quality. All they care about is the almighty big markup profit.
Once again, I am glad the US has the First Amendment protecting speech.
At least the Chinese know the truth about this sad character.  If he told the truth to the American people they would toss him out on his big ears. He is not even honest enough to produce his real birth certificate.  Ask Mrs. Obama.  Or his grandmother.
What no democrat outcry of abuse of their leader?
"It's obvious that the Chinese are trying to prevent something that the Chinese find 'cool' (combining Obama with Mao) from being used by right wing Anti-Obama people in the US to call him a 'communist'."
Yeah, the Chinese in general consider the Cultural Revolution and its death toll "cool."
"chaos in the collectives and unfortunate climatic conditions resulted in widespread famine, while Mao continued to export grain to “save face” with the outside world. ...the death toll due to famine may have been as high as 20 to 30 million."http://www.answers.com/topic/cultural-revolution
That's cool isn't it? And don't forget those purged.
True to form. Some stupid Americans will just use this as a vehicle to pursue their prejudices and whine away gain. And still a lack of understanding of what socialism really means. China does not have universal health care and half the negative commenters do not even know this or can define socialism and how it applies. Why dont we just dispense with labels and words we dont get and sinmply state what we dont like instead of parotting talk radio airheads. China is also not in a depression and are on pace for 8% growth. What socialism? Our education system really needs help.
