China celebrates 60 years with star-studded movie

BEIJING – With more than 170 A-list movie stars from China and Hong Kong, "The Founding of a Republic," is breaking box office records – raking in  $33.8 million during its first 10 days in theaters.

But this is nothing like the products pumped out by Hollywood. Instead, it’s a propaganda film made by the state-owned China Film Group.

Launched to mark the 60th anniversary of the communist era, the 135-minute movie depicts Mao Zedong’s rise, tracking the 1945-49 war in which the Communist Party of China (the CPC) led by Mao and the National Democratic Party (the KMT) led by Chiang Kai-shek fought fiercely for power..

The lengthy cast list includes many of the top names in modern Chinese film, including martial arts stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," action movie director John Woo, among others. And most of the famous actors took little or no pay for their work – rather, considering it an honor to have just a few brief lines in the film.

Movies in China usually don’t sell a lot of tickets during the so-called "red season," the summer and early fall months that are dominated by national holidays ( July 1 is the Communist Party of China’s Founding Day, Aug. 1 is the People’s Liberation Army Day and Oct.1 is National Day). The films that are released are typically dull, mind-numbing propaganda films only viewed by students or government staff with free tickets.

But "The Founding of a Republic" seems to be an exception. The box office numbers are still skyrocketing the China Film Group says it expects the tally to pass $350 million within the next couple of weeks.

Director: It's a 'good story'
Huang Jianxin, one of the two directors of the big hit, proudly told NBC News that he believes a lot of younger movie goers were happy to buy tickets of their own accord (a ticket costs $5-10 in Beijing), not because they were told to, as was often the case with government-made propaganda films in the past. Huang acknowledged that the celebrity-packed cast was clearly a magnet for younger viewers, but added that the movie, "would not attract them without a good story, no matter how many stars are in it."

There’s no question that the "The Founding of a Republic" is made in a refreshingly different way. Unlike other propaganda movies, which usually portray Mao’s Nationalist Party rivals as ruthless, cold-blooded, "counter revolutionaries," Chiang Kai-shek and his son are shown for the first time having down- to-earth father-son moments. And his officers also display a human side, even when they talk about assassinations.

The movie also contains a rare sight – a drunken Mao and a singing Zhou Enlai (the first premier of the People’s Republic of China). Still, Mao and his party, living in earthen huts and forced to save candle light for meetings, are always portrayed as righteous and invincible against the U.S.-backed, totally corrupt, Nationalist forces (who eventually lose and flee to Taiwan).

Zhang Lianjuan, an account associate at an multinational company, chose to go to the theater as a small celebration right after her marriage registration, but she was disappointed by the film. "I don't have a special feeling for this movie, it merely went through a lot of history in two and half hours," she said. "The celebrities didn't give an outstanding performance in the movie at all."

But Zheng Yunfeng, a 30-year-old radio host in Beijing, thought it was a "well-balanced" movie. "It doesn't vilify the KMT [the Nationalist Party] as mainstream movies used to in the past. It objectively illustrates the real history KMT had both corrupt and righteous moments at the time."

A patriotic time
Still why would such a stellar cast take part in such a propagandistic project, and for such meager paychecks? Huang, the director, attributes it to a sense of patriotism ahead of the 60th anniversary of the founding of China.

"China’s 30 years of opening and reform has made China come back to the world stage," he said. "Fast economic growth and increasing state power has again brought back self-esteem [to the] Chinese people," said Huang.

However, he doesn’t stress the real powers behind the movie: the Central Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China and the State Administration of Radio Film and Television. The two government departments decide what’s allowed to be shown on TV, in movie theaters and in newspapers, and what books and movies are allowed to be imported into China.

Their efforts to create a blockbuster film to celebrate the Party’s 60 years in power have clearly been a big success.

Hey listen the Chinese, have the worlds best economy, followed by the EU and then India (INDIA !!!!Fellow Americans).

My hat is off to China, they are rising and we (the USA) are sinking. The truth is the truth, life is still good here in the States, but we are no longer the leaders in anything of significance.

One last footnote, what tremendous Olympics the Chinese put out on-well done.
Hi I agree so much with what Eddie in Kuwait had to say, funny how Americans still they they are significant in the world, as China the EU and India has left the faltering ego-centric America in the economic dust.

The Chinese government has done a terrific job with their economy and flooding American markets with their respective cheap labor goods.

India made a tremendous investment in moving their country into all things technology.

Yes, I hold very little hope for the USA I am moving to beautiful Ireland as America is just not that great, in fact its depressing, CAIO!
China is economic jaggernaught, we as Americans can learn allot from them.

I do hold hope out for the USA as the Obama team will surely lead us into more fertile economic feilds.

I believe in Obama!
This movie sounds interesting and even though it is propaganda, I am still interested in seeing it.  I hope a subtitled version comes to region 1 DVD soon.
It would be interesting to see such a movie from an American perspective. Keep in mind, China and India may have better economies, right now, but WE have freedom and equality. Semper Fi!!
I love many of these famous Chinese stars, but propaganda is still propaganda. China is still one of the worst nations for human rights, rights that we are born with. Please consider that.
Blown away by some of these comments. I hope most of you realize that America is built upon the individual, so if it is faltering it is our responsibility, or our blame, as individuals. While we could clearly enslave a vast majority of our populace and make them work for next to nothing, and furthermore, we clearly have the military force to kill demonstrators in the streets--int he long run, I don't mind sacrificing some economic growth for the rights and freedoms that are extended to me and my family.
What's more, for people to talk about turning their back on America (Marvin leaving for Ireland), when they refuse to take any initiative or responsibility is just downright unAmerican and proves that it is part of the problem. I feel like a number of people blame the goverment or some outside force, without realizing that each of us is the goverment and we are responsible for our country. And for the record CIAO is spelled CIAO and not CAIO, nor is it used in Ireland all that much.
Well children, move to China, live the lifestyle, then come back and tell us how you liked it..people are still finding ways to leave China to come here..why, when its such a wonderful economy, such a great place to raise your children all 1 or 2 of them..Or, stay here and contribute to oyur country..Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country..how quickly we forget.
The EU is better than America? You have gotta be kidding. They have double the unemployment rate and less than half the industrial output increase than the USA still has. Also, their currency should be on par with the USD, but they messed that up as well, so that now they have the world's most expensive currency in the EURO. Subsequently, everything produced in the EU is too expensive outside of the EU. They are in fact doing the exact oppostite of China.

If youn't need to work and don't mind paying double or triple for everything in Europe than what you can get the same things for in the USA, go right ahead -- enjoy.
If the US is so bad why do they try to send all their students to our universities? Why are they constantly trying to get us to approve high tech exports to their country? We have sent our experts for years to help them develop and still are doing this on top of that have provided them with tons of opportunities from foreign investment which has provided them jobs and also technology. Got to love it when you help someone and then they never give you any credit for your help when it seems they start to succeed. I think that all they care about is themselves and could care less about the generosity of America throughout the years. Now that they are seeming to rise in the world stage I have seen such a growth in envious and hateful remarks to try at all costs to try to rise to the top. Don't believe me, this is one of the multitudes of ideas that are popular in China, think they are "friends" with the USA, I dont' think so, it's strictly use us for what we can give them and then get rid of us.
http://bbs.chinadaily.com.cn/viewthread.php?tid=648530&fpage=1&highlight=What%2BChina%2Bshould%2Bdo%
We need to unite Americans, work hard and mentor and educate our children and those around us. Now is not the time to give and think that it would just be better if we just all learned Chinese and moved to China, this is not the way and will only lead you to live a poor and miserable life most likely. We need to focus on rebuilding our economy and helping our neighbors. Boycott the stranglehold of Chinese products on our economy and support your local American business. Let's keep our money in our economy not ship it out to help those who only seek to take us down. If we don't get serious about this now there is no hope, there is no more time to live in the fantasy world of big cars and big tv's of the 90's.
These idiots are clearly spreading propaganda, and are from China. "China is economic juggernaut." Spend a little bit more on your English education. Heap praise upon a country in which most people live horrible lives. Think about it. One child policy. Two people have ONE child. Their child has ONE child. Visualize the family tree. One poor sap will have to support at least 8/16 people. Give or take a few untimely deaths.  India is in much better shape. They have an enormous YOUNG middle class that is coming into its own. They are a force to be reckoned with. China will get old before it gets rich, unfortunately for them. Which is a shame, because China, despite its hideous communist government, is a country of admirable people. If a few things were different 700 years ago, they might still be the dominant nation in the world.

Anyway, do a better job of concealing your nonsense.
I cannot believe all of the responses that only focus on China's economic success.  It is at the cost of American jobs, not to mention the cost of quality of life for many Chinese.  The Chinese love to put on the happy face and pretend to the world that they care about human rights - only to stomp on those they consider a threat.  Of course I am speaking of the Tibetans and their country - yes, THEIR country of Tibet.  Their religion and culture, which are inseparable, are being systematically extinguished and innocent people are being tortured and killed, by the Chinese government.  This must stop and all of the accolades given to the Chinese for their "reform" must also stop.  Wake up people, they are not transparent and who knows what they have in mind for the future if left unopposed.  Long live HH Dalai Lama and his people.
China is a beautiful land geographically, if only they would vest their interests in cleaning up the garbace and pollution. If not, all their "economic" advancement they boast will offer nothing short of a massive cancer pandemic. I have always thought asians to be a hair healthier than we americans but.. if they keep building up they will shorten their lifespans and increase their carbon footprint.
Good luck
China spreading propaganda? heh, I would just like to ask those who commented if they have been to India, China, EU, etc before?

I live in American and I've been to India, China, and Europe over the past 6 weeks and reguarly visit these countries/regions for 3 years now. I can honestly say America is still the best country. Our quality of life, technology developed, military power, economic strength (waning but still powerful), etc. is better than any other country. Have you ever looked at a natural lake in India and seen the garbage floating? Ever smelled the polution rampant in the Chinese air?

Now the article is about the first 60 years of China. They have done an enormous amount of work in the past 60 years and should be honored for their achievements. Albeit that they have copied a lot of technology that's allowed them to reach their current state.

Congratulations China!
who says american movies are not propaganda from the government.  Yes it is "private" but who knows what they do under the table.  The last 10 years how many military war movies have you seen?  How many of them have American Heros and evil 'dictators' of other countries.  A country is a country.  They are all the same.  The US is the best propaganda artist in the world.  The government have the whole country believe "we are in a democratic society"  But the reality is this country is a republic and nowhere close to a democracy that the Greeks had.  "Do everyday people have a say in the government?"  Everyone is opposed to Obama and his health plan but its still pushing forward.  Everyone whats troops out of iraq and afghan but they are still there and Obama is still sending more.  Do we have any say in all that?  NO!!!!!  This country wants you to believe you have a say but in reality you dont.  To me I rather have no voting rights but free health care and free money when I retire.  We dont have that here people.  We have to worry about retirement but the so called "Communist" China has retirement payments to retirees that are the same as their salary.  And on top of that full health care benefits for all citizens.  Why dont we have that here???  Wake up USA this government is just full of lies.  TRUE DEMOCRACY WAS ONLY IN ANCIENT GREECE AND WE WILL NEVER SEE A DEMOCRATIC NATION EVER AGAIN!!!!!
People need to keep a few things in mind about the NEW China. I live in China and I grew up in Montana. I am a tall white man and have not fit into China for seven years now. There is a famous little thought that runs around the business world. 90% of the wealth is controlled by 10% of the people. Example: 10% of the movie actors make 90% of the wages paid. In China we have over 1.3 billion people. That, my friends, is 130 million rich people. When I go to work every morning (about 2 miles) I can count 60 to 100 Audi A6Ls, 20 to 50 BMW 700s, 2 or 3 Hummer2s and 10 to 30 S class Benz. How many do you see on your way to work?  Now companies like Ford, Toyota have announced that they are going to save their companies by pushing the standard of living even higher here in China. China has done one thing very well. They regulate growth in both directions. The have this idea that we can’t just let things keep going up and start punishing companies and industries so that the growth will slow or start falling. I would like to give you a fact. In 2006 China had more than 100 car/truck brands. When I came here in 2003 every western company that had eve been known in America was setting up shop in China. Billions and Billions of dollars were being pumped into this corrupt culture. The cars, houses, buildings, highways, bridges and trains were all being financed by the west. Here in Chongqing the first mono-rail train was financed by the Japanese and these people here in Chongqing HATE the Japanese. That leaves one question. What happens to a balloon when you take the air out a little at a time? It gets smaller. Why are people wondering why the western economies are getting smaller? You took the money out. I mean all of us who keep looking to American companies for extra cash in the stock market. These companies have to look for returns. The best are in Asia. Trust me the Asian balloon is about to go boom. Then what with your money?
Dave, China don't have any health care benefits for all ciytizens. Only less than 1% of the people got so call "free" health care. And only very few of those got "retirement payments to retirees that are the same as their salary".
Oh how excellent that all these people are behind a terror mongering dictator who held all the food and power for the communist elite. A man who sold out the peasants by selling off their food stores to other communist countries to finance his war machine and personal tastes.  Millions of Chinese were starved, beaten and imprisoned directly because of Chairman Mao.  Millions of Chinese died in the great famine due to policies of the Mao led government.  This does not even include Mao's attempted destruction of the Chinese culture and identity so that he could forge a new identity of broken people behind his Communist banner.

How quickly people forget.  I can't blame the young people in China because they have no way of knowing this. But all of you ignorant westerners singing the praises of Mao need a reality check.
Only in this Democratic nation can you whiners complain about it and not rot in a cell for it.
wow, china has the worlds best economy? figures an american would say something stupid like that.
then why were they pumping money into it just like the US and europe?
i'm american and live in switzerland, i think the economy here is better, especially since switzerland isnt in the EU.
China provides government subsidies for most exports which makes trading with them unfair and illegal in most cases.  They'll pay workers merely cents per day to create products that cost Americans $100s/hr to produce.  Can't anyone see that the Chinese economy is all smoke and mirrors?  Oh, and their one child policy is going to cause a population crash within one generation as a huge percentage of their population is male.
You're all very lame. The article is refering to a prideful movie in the Chinese culture and all you can speak of is how great one country is compared to another. Keep the focus on the article, and less on your prides and patriotism. Only one person mentioned seeing the movie from an outside perspective, and obviously that is the only open-minded person speaking here. Props to you friend. Way to keep an open mind!
I note with great interest that few Americans understand the concept of political, economic and military overreach that has been the harbinger of the demise of many empires in the past.  We are walking the same road taken by the Roman, British, and Soviet Empires.  We have no special immunity from meeting the same fate.  I had the experience of living and working in China for two years and studied the culture.  The acendancy of the Chinese people who have worked so hard is deserved.  If Americans gave up their collective sense of entitlement, self-indulgence and greed, the country would continue to prosper and remain relevant.  Sadly, it seems that this will not change.  So we will be a footnote in history.
Was this column about a movie from China or was it just a excuse for people to voice their small minds about their problems with their own world.
If this movie is such an hit in China should it not have been a pirated DVD by now. If the movie makes it big then the book version will make it big. Then there is the TV series. With spin offs.   Since this is China it is an easy sell. A great way to push products that do not sell in the West and dump them on China own people.
China deserves its moment in the spotlight and have a lot to be proud of having stepped out of the stone age to join modern society.  They have quite a ways to go with human rights and environmental issues.  What floors me however is the comparisions to how much better China is vs. the US.  Give. Me. A. Break.  At least our workers aren't working in sweatshops, selling tainted baby formula and lead paint based products overseas, among other issues that China needs to address.  Some people need to get a clue ...badly.
China, America, EU, India, blah, blah, blah... Everyone thinks that their favorite country is the best in the world, but when will the human race wake up and see that people everywhere are basically the same.  We would all like our freedom from the ruling class, we would all like affordable health care, we would all like to be able to travel freely to wherever it is we would all like to go.  Until we make a stand that we are citizens of the earth, bond by our differences, as well as, our similarities, we are just lost animals butting our heads in the age old game of "territorital righteousness".  No one is better than anyone else, we are all the same no matter where we live.  The only difference is that our governments want us to believe that we are number one, so we will blindly follow their laws, and do their bidding as pawns in their game of world domination.  If the people on this planet would unite and tell the governments to go govern elsewhere, and let the people live in peace and harmony, we would have a much better world to pass on to our grandchildren.  One without the debt that the "entitled one percent" has brought on us just to enrich their own holdings and status in this world.  One without wars that the "governments" have pushed us into, to fight for the "American, Chinese, Indian, EU,etc. way", which just boils down to helping the rich get richer and keeping the spoils of war for themselves, while killing other people who would rather just be left alone by our government and their government, to live in peace and grow their own food, and live a healthy, happy, life.  I'm sick of all this "pseudo-patriotic" talk that I hear when ever I go out.  I'm sick of all the pawns who follw their governments every whim, without questioning the results of such actions.  I'm sick of being know as a citizen of a country, when I truly live on a planet full of others who believe like I do, but are silenced by the minority of fools who have nothing better to do then drink their alcohol, grab their guns, and shoot anything that looks different then they do.  It's not the 1st century anymore, grow up people and see the harm that all governments do, and demand your rights to be free from the garbage that washes up on your shores disquised as laws to make your life better.  If you don't want to a world citizen, and instead want to believe that you are better than everyone else, all that I can say is grab your guns and go to the desert and fight it out with the rest of the brainwashed people that have no insight into the real reasons that we have the problems we do in all the world.
america is america... land of sugar and honey... take time to ask at least a single person in each country in the world we live in... where do you wanna go? what's your ideal place to live? where do you think your dreams will come true... it'll come up with a huge difference from any other answers,,, majority will say AMERICA. i'm from the philippines and it's devastating what our country's facing right now. take a look around, everybody's seeking help from the americans. this has nothing to do with the help america's sending our country as of this moment. just face the reality, america has a big edge... i salute you people, see you soon... (still need to eat sacks of rice and salt though) adios!!! long live america!!!
Whats going to happen to China's economy when the standard of living changes and they start to demand living like we do in America?  Whats going to happen when the workers refuse to make cheap goods any more?  If we think this economic collapse is bad just wait till the people of China demand a better style of living.
What ever country you come from they will always have propoganda. They have the GOOD side and the BAD side of any country. We are just lucky that this country (USA)that we live have the freedom to express what we are saying now.Even it is negative or positive, others cannot...For me America is still great only the people who runs it will change it for the good or for the worse. So vote someone that will make a America Great again and that is also your right that others country doesn't have. Aren't we LUCKY and Blessed....
A great country to LIVE for and Die for...
You rule Brian Wheeler!  We are so blessed to be Americans and blessed to be where we are - God bless America , its people and its economy!
God Bless America! It's funny how people from other countries view America as a let down but if it wasn't for the U.S.A there wouldn't be a Europe or even China when they were taken over by the Japanese. Get the facts right and support our fellow countrymen. If you don't like staying in the states get the hell out of here!
One thing about the the USA, we always seem to make a comeback.  We may be down but we are not out!  Its ok to have set backs and we must learn from this moment in time.  This is the country that freed the world of Nazism and Totalitarianism during WWII, went through a depression, fought Communism and is fighting terrorism, we are now facing one of our greatest challenges.  We must change and be honest with ourselves and bring about the change, not wait for the world to change us.  Let's not forget we are Americans!
Democracy is fiction.  I dont know of any country which allow all political parties and all candidates to stand for election.  We in "the west" are just controlled in a more subtle way than our Chinese counterparts.  Face facts.
Hi, You fool Americans, keep worshiping your God Obama and one day you all will like China 50 years ago.  Everyone of your children holds a little red Obama book at the heart and praise your great leader leading you people to the hell.  Long live Chairman Mao! Long live Marxism!
It is revolting that a cheery movie is being made about this monster, Mao Zedong. He is responsible for the deaths of more people than Hitler and Stalin combined. Yes, he founded a united Chinese republic. But this was founded on oceans of blood and oceans of tears. Mao was a thug, nothing more.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden DRAGON.
In response to the person that said the US should model itself after China:

Are you just plain uniformed?  The left in America was clean energy, "fair" wages for all, etc.  None of that is present in China.  They are able to flood the US with cheap goods and take service jobs from the US because they pay their people next to nothing.  There are no regulations on pollution.  Most Americans (Obama himself) would rather die than turn our nation into that.

It is working for China for the present time, but without a very well balanced system at some point there will a call for another change or revolution.  The same is happening in the US right now.  China may be on top for a time, but in the future they will succumb to their own mistakes and another country will take center stage.
Do you know China stoped minimum wage last year when seeing companies are closing down? China is more realistic on health care system. That Government is more flexible than ours.
If we stoped minimum wage law, all manufacturing job will be back. But can we do that???
Hey Marvin Eastman- don't let the door knob hit you on the way out!  China and India are "important" and the US is "irrelevant?"  Really?  The US is egocentric?  If we were egocentric, would we sacrifice our soldiers for foreigners that don't appreciate the sacrifice?  Is the US the largest economy on the international stage?  Obviously not.  Is China the most important simply because of their size?  No - It's their size and their absolute monopoly on their citizen's decision-making that add to their international leverage.  But when the fit hits the shan, who does the international community look to for leadership?  The USA, that's who!!
Wow, you guys who are heralding Chinese communists as a paragon of economics need to get your facts straight. You know why the economy in China is so strong? Not because their gov't is good at balancing the books. It's because compared to U.S. wages the workers in China are paid next to nothing. But getting any payment is a godsend to a Chinese worker. Is THAT what you want America to become? Really? We in America have 5% of the worlds population and we produce 20% of the world's economic output. America with 307,261,000 people has a GDP of $14,264,600,000. China has a population of 1,332,660,000 (that's 4 times the population for the math impaired) has a GDP of $7,916,429,000. That's double the GDP our economy creates with a quarter of the population that China has. You still think they're doing better? Stop drinking the kool-aid and learn some facts.
Right on, E Chan.  Right on.
When I first moved to China, I was told that foreigners come to China for one month and go home and write a book.  If they stay for a year, they go home and write a short article.  If they stay for 10 years, they go home and admit that they still don't really know China.
While I applaud our freedom to say or write almost anything we want, I sometimes wonder whether a little more fact-checking and self-censorship would help to dispel the inevitable conclusion that the US is a poorly educated society.
It's sad, truly sad that anyone would make a movie attempting to portray ANYTHING about Mao as being "righteous."  Mao was one of the most evil men of the 20th Century.  He ranks right up there with Hitler and Stalin in terms of the number of innocent people he had murdered.  There is nothing, NOTHING rightous about this horrible man.  The world, and certainly China, has been a much better place since he died.  Pity he couldn't have died sooner.
Everybody in China will agree that China is the best, if they know what's good for them.
U.S.A still the best place to live in the world. I live under the communist regime for years. There is no freedom of speech and press there.

God Bless and Long live America.
Well its true that if America wasn't around things would be different, but if there were no Germany, woulldn't the same thing be true?  TBH I'm surprised nobody here and screamed that its all a bunch of Communist propaganda (althought I found it humorous that they were disclaiming the movie as pure propaganda as on the side bar the advertisement was CAPITALISM: A love story) but E Chan, you cannot deny that America is a falling superpower.  I've seen Obama remarked multiple times in these comments, and even he sees this and wants to extend school days to 6 days a week, and tack on an extra month of work (Which is similar to how Joseph Stalin industrialized Russia) Push come to shove, if something isn't done soon, we're going to be just another country with nothing truely remarkable about it.
America may have taken a bit of a tumble, but remember this country and it's citizens have been there to help the free world through World War I and II. We have helped the 3rd World during major upheavals, including famine, earthquake, drought, tidal waves. No country has shown greater compassion or given so much as the USA.
Communism is a lie, always has been. Look at Stalin, Pol Pot, Kim Jung Il. East Germany. The USA inspires the individual. The individual thought and creativity, make America the flag bearer for free thinking men everywhere. Tehran and China can't even say that, isn't that right Mr. Putin!
i am singaporean chinese who is english educated and bilingual. I am familiar with both the asian and western culture. There is no perfect country i must say, no praise to any since each culture got their up and down side.Even though i see the west emphasize on human rights they are not exactly having a unblemished record. China do seem to rise economically so but how much of the wealth trickles down to the masses or are only making the corrupt fatter. The thought of one party dictating all policies and controlling the government isn't something to be proud of. Chinese citizens losing their political rights for 60 years, why do they still praise the system is hard to comprehend. What the government do to the vulnerable during the Tian An Men square massacre comes to horrific reminder of just how wrong and wicked the party has become. If the preson being squashed is your family, will they still sing praises and "kow tow" to the government? Perhaps, i don't blame the people who blindly follows the government since the media is their propaganda machine where truth and transparency may be desperately lacking. For them to advance, all citizens must have a say in politics through fair voting and democratic processes.
I agree with some of the comments that America is washed up and no longer a power of any sort. China, for example is the new land of milk and honey. It's, like, really fun.  Therefore, let us please STOP ALL immigration (legal/illegal) into this country, due to our fall from power and low status. And let's start a temporary government program that assists all those who want to leave the USA by paying their 1 way airfare, perhaps to Beijing, and stripping their citizenship (if it exists). Who's with me?!
America with 307,261,000 people has a GDP of $14,264,600,000. China has a population of 1,332,660,000 (that's 4 times the population for the math impaired) has a GDP of $7,916,429,000. Our economy creates double the GDP China's economy does with a quarter of the population. You still think they're doing better? Stop drinking the kool-aid and learn some facts.
