Portly Thai traffic cops told to hit gym

BANGKOK, Thailand – Street vendors along a major intersection in downtown Bangkok are familiar with Sgt. Nitat Saisa-ard. Not only is he a good-natured traffic cop who enjoys iced cold fruit juices, but his chubby figure is hard to miss.

The 45-year-old sergeant weighs almost 300 pounds, more than half of which he gained over the past two decades since he graduated from police academy.

"I know I’m fat," said Nitat. "It’s hard for me to move around, dodging the cars, but I don’t feel like working out after a long day at work. I’m just so exhausted and I want to go to bed."

He’s going to have to change. And that’s an order.

Nitat is among 340 overweight traffic police officers in Bangkok told to shed at least 10 pounds and get into shape in three months.

"We ran a health check of over 4,000 officers this year and found that 57 percent have high cholesterol, high triglyceride and are overweight," said Police Major General Pharnu Kerdlarpphon, deputy chief of Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police Bureau. "Doctors blame it on unbalanced diets and lack of exercise and we’re trying to fix that."

He said the nature of traffic police work exposes them to more health risks compared to their peers, largely due to long hours in a polluted environment.

The police department had adopted different approaches in its initiative to slim down the force in the past, from supporting sports activities at each precinct to handing out diet manuals to officer’s wives – all to no avail.

This year, city police looked for a way to make exercise sexier and more accommodating and found a willing partner in California Wow Xperience, an international fitness company.

"Each gym has terrific facilities and is located in a clean and cool shopping mall," said Pharnu. "Trainers are also cheerful and encouraging. It’s a big incentive. It’s much better than working out on their own at the precinct."

The fitness company has offered eight facilities around Bangkok where plump cops can work out two hours a day, three days a week. It also designed a 12-week exercise plan that includes classes like body combat, cycling, weight lifting and yoga. And all of comes free of charge for the police officers.

"We actually love programs like this because our mission is to continue improving people’s life through fitness and this year we’re focusing a lot on charity," said Janeen Lyons, the fitness’ marketing communications manager.

Getting ‘fit and firm’
Nitat, the portly police sergeant, has been to the gym regularly since the program started in July. His favorite workout activities are jogging on the treadmill and weight lifting. He’s tried yoga, but admits that he’s not a fan and tends to stand in the back row of the class.

So far he’s managed to lose almost 22 pounds, exceeding the police department’s minimum requirement. He is pleased that his uniforms are getting looser and his colleagues have noticed his fleshy arms becoming more muscular.

"I guess I can live with being overweight – as long as I can get more fit and firm," he said.

Pharnu, the deputy commissioner, said he has only received positive feedback and no complaints from his subordinates, even though the program is mandatory.

"I hope they will be in a better shape, be more agile and more selective in eating," he said. "It’s good for their job performance when they’re healthy. Their wives and kids are happy. Their mental health and life expectancy after retirement should be improved, too."

The fitness company, California Wow Xperience, said it will reward the officer who loses the most weight with a free 3-year membership.

It is enticing enough but Nitat said his aims are a little lower for now.

"I don’t know about [winning] the award. I just hope the weight I shed won’t bounce back any time soon."

I think this is a great idea. I've seen plenty of terribly overweight cops here in the US too, many who wouldn't be able to chase down a criminal if they needed to.
I believe it should be a mandatory requirement for all cops to stay physically fit in order to stay on the force otherwise we can't expect them to protect and serve us.
physical standards were in place when I went thru the academy in 1978. Thanks to the whiny ACLU all that was dropped. Lets drop them on their butts.
I agree that cops who are out on the streets should be in shape. There was a police chase recently where the two officers were too out of shape to catch a man.  This could be the difference between life and death for someone.
I agree with both Danielle (KY) and Teresa (NY) that our police force are unhealthily overweight. Fortunately our force maintain and are ship shape.  All of us need to shape up.  I know I do.
just the other day..i got pulled over for speeding in Maine.  you should've seen this fat pig trying to fight his way out of his car..i thought i was gonna have to help him.. he was all out of breath..by the time he approached my car.
he's lucky i was not going to run...this guy couldn't chase a donught!!!
out forces oversees are required to maintain a physical fitness standard, why are our cops not? Could be simple like a 1 mile run and sit ups plus somthing else.
I agree.  It should be like the Army with physial training run each morning with standardized height and weight controls.
Are you kidding me??? Cops are just revenue collectors for their county or state and are the product of big fat government!
Even for someone in shape there are several factors against the police officer. Having to run with an extra 20 pounds around your waste plus a vest on that is constricting your breathing plus boots is no easy task.  As compared to the criminal who the officer is chasing who most likely has sneakers, no extra weight or a vest on.
I agree that officers should stay in shape but the public also should understand the handicaps the officer has when it comes to a foot pursuit.  After all officers are just humans too.
The cops are just like their fellow compatriots. Slightly overweight. So if all are fat, the bad guys
are also no too speedy. The fat cops have the same chance to catch them. Foul play would be when only the bad boys remain fit.
It is nice to see the soldiers of 1945 and the ones
in Irak 2009. The hardest fighting they have today is to fight against their weight.
Fat cops are in style! Check out the NYPD, Chicago, Philadelphia etc. Only the LAPD seems to be in shape.
I thought that was why we gave them guns?
It's human nature to reward yourself after you have accomplished something, so why not for staying in shape? Recommend a strict incentive program to reward a police officer with money or benefits for staying in shape on a regular basis so he or she will continue the program with commitment. If they don't remain committed, they loose the reward.
The fact that a street cop is on his feet and walking all day but is still fat shows weight is far more complicated than calories in/calories out.
It's the doughnuts, idiot!
I do agree that our police forces should take a monthly physical test in order to stay out on the street. But as everyone knows, when you do shift work, your body's metabolism can drop. You will get out of shape faster then a normal person who works a set schedule. Yes our cops should slim down, but like a regular person they get tired and stressed out to. The cops who stay in shape should get a monthly bonus.
Danielle, I'll agree with you on this one and also for the people of Ky. comon lets get the fat off our asses! Cut out those soft drinks I have not changed my food I eat but cut out all sugars in drinks. I have personally lost 17lbs just by cutting out soft drinks alone from the vending machines in the past 5 weeks. That is $ saved too @80cents per drink x5 per day at work.Thats $80 per month saved! And I do feel better!
Since when did you see a cop walking? I bearly see police standing up when they are directing traffic around an accident or when traffic signals are inoperative.

However, in their defence, most cops have the good sense, pride or fear to stay in shape; at least enough to beat a suspect after he is handcuffed.

Unfortuantely we still have a steriod problem in the ranks too. That can't be good for anyone, officer or criminal.
I know........everyone whom is on here commenting that "fat cops" should be in shape, are in shape themselves? All of you go to the gym, eat right and don't smoke? People in glass houses............that's all I have to say.
They should have weight standards just in our Military...Come to think of it  they do Get busy with the Fat boys and girls
GK: Weight isn't more complicated that calories in/calories out. The average person burns 120 calories per mile jogging, and calories per mile is way lower if you're walking at a slow pace. You can easily scarf down 500 calories in 10 minutes. There's 270 calories in a snickers bar. If you're snacking on junk food all day, even if your walking, you're going to gain weight. It's so much easier to ingest calories than to burn them.
Until anyone in here decides to experience what life is like as a police officer, i.e, the stress, bad hours, the public, please consider your comments.  The majority of officers I know and work with are in outstanding shape and work hard.  Don't overgeneralize something you know nothing about.
To Nick in Modesto...
Under no circumstances should a COP be overweight.
I know that they are people too. However, a man whose ability to do his job to protect citizens, shows his lack of caring for them when he lets himself become fat. It is a entirely selfish, and lazy, condition.

Men who want to be doing the job, should do their best to be able to do it well.
people have lost respect them selves, how do you expext them to respect others? although they can be told what to do, but how is that different from animals? secondly, anyone who works for someone to take other people's stuff or funds without a court date is a pig, let me explain: any states' motor vehicle states that all veihcles!!! are subject to motor veihcles laws, like having insurance, registrations, licencing, inspections, etc. THE UNITED STATES CODE STATES WHAT IS A VEICHLE: A MOTOR PROPELLED CONTRIVANCE THAT'S USED FOR COMMERCIAL!!!!! PURPOSES... I DROVE MY PERSONAL AUTOMOBILE A '79 450 SEL BENS IN BROOKLYN, NY 18 AVE - 79 ST FOR 2 YEARS WITHOUT THIS BULL COPES KNEW IT BUT LEGALLY THEY COULDN'TDO NOTHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!
How about "America" start losing some weight! Our society is getting fatter and fatter by the day. Our children are getting fatter too. Everyone needs to get off of there fat As* and do something physical
given that i'm a former collegiate runner and am actually in better shape and faster now at 28 then i was then, i have occasionally considered a career in crime.  i haven't encountered one cop that i couldn't outrun even in a sprint (i'm more of a half to full marathon runner).  of course, i'm against crime, so i'de never actually do it, but at times it is tempting.  and while some of the "bad guys" are getting fat and slow too, i've read of several runners who DID decide to make a career in crime and alluded police for quite a while (through their better physical fitness), until they made some stupid mistake (like speeding in their car) that allowed cops to catch them.  and yes, they have guns, but would you like it if cops just went around shooting anyone who ran away?  what about that scared little kid who took his parents car recently?  should they have shot him?  he ran.  cops shouldn't be just some shmoe on the street, they should be amongst the fittest members of society.  and i am friends with some cops who fit this bill, doing crazy trail runs and ultra-marathons that would incapacitate the average american.  so don't make excuses and say it can't be done, it's an important part of their job.
The 3 year free membership infers that this program is not forever. They need to make a permanent change for these officers not just a short term fitness program.  When the free memberships run out they will go back to being overweight.  Either make physical requirements to enter the physical requirements to stay or offer programs like these forever.  A fat cop is not acceptable because they will not be able to protect us just serve us with tickets.
Must suck to be in a profession that you have to be everything to everybody.  Always criticized, but still politely deal with the worst society has to offer or your a bully, while being judged by people too afraid or unable to do the job themselves.  They should stay fit, just as we should obey the law and be greatful for them putting on the uniform, however tight that might be.  I can sleep at night because they are out there.  Kudos to them.
Here is my proposal:
When a cop exceeds the Police Academy's limits on weight, a proportionate amount of money should be deducted from his or her salary.
On the other hand, if an officer drops below the set standards should be rewarded with a certain amount of money added to his salary.
This weight control procedure should be mandatory on a yearly basis.

Dispite the stress, hard work, long hours and other rigorous physical motions cops put their bodies through. It should be a pride and joy to stay in shape and look good. Bare in mind you are also respected depends on how you presents yourself. So stay in shape and live happy and longer.
Time to put this clown "to sleep".
We lost thousands on 9/11/2001 and 5500 more troops about time to make example out of him.
This is a message ro all you fat cops:
Work out,Relax, and stop stopping at Krispy Creme!
Well, what about our Doctors and nurses. what if someone went code blue or a code red(which is fire) what if they didnt run fast enough to get to the patient and they died? or or if a fire broke out and they were to exhausted to help? why is it different for a cop than anyone else? i think everyone should be healthy for medical reasons
I agree, it is easy to judge others when you are avoiding the mirror yourself.
And cops DO have to do physicals, just because you think a couple LOOK like they couldnt kick your butt, why dont you either
A - start something with one and see what happens
or
B - shut the hell up and worry about yourself
The fattest cops in  the world, the Chicago cops, should participate in the California Wow Xperience.
They might then be able to prevent some crime, (but that is doubtful).
If the police would spend more time walking a beat, rather than sitting behind a billboard talking on their cell phone, I might have sympathy.  As it stands, they are only employed as glorified meter maids.
You won't find the State Highway Patrol fat.  They get their pay docked for being over-weight.  We will never forget how to spell sheriff in our county.  One R for rediculous and two F's for TOO FAT.  Our sheriff is over 400 pounds, and goes by the name "Bubba" (not his real name), and is mostly worthless.
cops get paid enough to sit in there cars. maybe they should get out and move about a bit. however the cop in my small town goes the gym and is in shape. so why cant the rest of them. oh wait we r lazy in the usa and think every one else should be to. in any other job when you can no longer do the job you are let go. so why dont we do the sape to the cops that should be enough to keep them in shape.
They already have an incentive for staying in shape!  It's called lower health insurance.  Eat a healthy balanced meal, exercise, along with no smoking and you get added benefits.  Those benefits include longevity, healthy heart, lungs, and more physical activities with your kids and grand kids!!! Otherwise your looking at a wheelchair and an early grave!  How BRIGHT does the light bulb have to be?.....Hellooooooo

I think this is truly wonderful, and an excellent idea.  I know from experience that for every slim traffic officer I see in Forest Hills, NY, I can point out 10 grossly overweight individuals.  I have noticed that when people recieve a ticket from an overweight officer, they are twice as angry as when they receive one from a slim one.  I think they consider the overweight officers lazy and uncaring because they obviously display these characteristics in how they take care of themselves.  I think they should make programs like this mandatory in all lines of police work, throughout the United States and the World!
I dont want skinny cops like LA i want a police who i can squeeze, anyway, i dont like that forcing someone to  do something, how about the gov address the policemen's hours and their time, they work them many hours then have the nerve to call them fat, kinda mean...chicago cops are cuddlies
Police should be held to a higher standard.  It doesn't matter what I weigh or what shape I'm in.  I won't be pursuing and trying to control an out of control criminal.  The more fit the police force is the better.  Frankly, I would think that being so visible would make them want to look good.
I agree, we are so quick to judge. They should not have the standards of the Army. Army standards are difficult and I would like to see civilians deal with the stress of taking physical fitness tests and constantly having to step on a scale....Yes we all should strive to to stay in shape and maintain good health.
All policemen and policewomen are in shape.  Round is a shape.
Fat cops can't run?  I thought that was why so many of the guy's they are potentialy going to chase wear their pants with the crotch at the knees...Gives the fat cops 1/2 a chance!
Oh no, slim down? Then they would be able to find a real job. What ever would we do without these lazy fat slobs?
As someone who once worked at a police department before joining the Army, You all have no idea what you are talking about.  First off, you don't want to run after a criminal all by yourself, which normally you are.  What happens when you run 10 blocks and he turns around and kicks your butt.  Your now 10 blocks from your car and good luck on them finding you if your seriously hurt.  We had a saying, "They may be able to outrun me, but I'll be really impressed when they outrun my radio"  That is why you call in, get back up, and stay safe.  So you can go home to your family.  Secondly, you try sitting in a car for 10 hours a day and see what kind of shape you are in.  I worked out and ran 5-7 miles every morning, 5 days a week and still had a hell of a time with weight.  You couldn't get out and walk as you had to be with your car at all times in case of a call.  And last, as HLR said.  Unless you are in perfect shape, and live the same life style they do.  You shouldn't be so critical.
You can call it what it is - a double standard. Fat people calling out on fat cops.

But that's irrelevant. These people can be overweight. It's their choice. However, they should choose to lose their jobs as part of that. If they can't take control of being fit, they're not suitable for the police force.

It's part of the job. Hardly a double standard. They should fit the job and it seems like common sense to me. Would you want our school teachers in the United States to have no degree? Meet the qualifications for your job.
