HAVANA – As news of the death of the "King of Pop" spread last Thursday night, a group of fans and Jackson impersonators gathered in a tiny Havana living room in disbelief. They huddled around a shortwave radio and tuned to Florida stations, hoping someone would say it was all a hoax.

"We’re stunned and heartsick. For us, Michael was the sun," said Nestor Hernandez. "All of a sudden, the skies darkened."

For the most part, Michael Jackson’s controversies didn’t tarnish his fame in Cuba. As Cuba’s state-run media is devoid of celebrity gossip, many fans know all about his talent but nothing about his troubles.

After his death on Thursday, Cuban radio and TV hosts paid tribute to the American pop star and his musical creations with scant references to his excesses with drugs, spending or sexual molestation charges.

The daily Granma, published by Cuba’s ruling Communist Party, reported on Jackson’s death, describing him as a "magnificent talent with a strange personal life," without providing any further explanation.

"Radio Rebelde," the island’s main radio station, abandoned regular rush-hour programming Friday morning to run news of Jackson’s death and play some of his most popular hits from decades ago while fans called in with accolades and requests.

‘Comparable to a Mozart’
Several successful recording artists remembered Jackson in interviews with NBC News as a brilliant and iconic performer whose music helped shape the creativity of others.

"Michael Jackson was one of the top musicians of the century, comparable to a Mozart, a genius in everything he touched," said Edesio Alejandro, a prolific songwriter who has composed the scores of more than 36 films.

Cuban percussionist Amadito Valdes, best known for his playing with the Buena Vista Social Club, compared Jackson to Elvis Presley. "Both great performers broke the mold. With Michael, you can talk about the ‘before’ and the ‘after’ he came on the pop music scene."

X Alfonso, singer and composer of Afro-Cuban fusion music, said he grew up listening to Jackson. "Every birthday and New Year’s Eve party we ever had ended with Michael Jackson’s music. Today, it’s the same. Everyone in this house danced to Michael’s music – from my 4-year-old and 10-year-old kids to my parents and grandparents. And, even though he’s gone, we’re going to keep on dancing."

New generation puts on red jacket
Hernandez, one of the fans who gathered to mourn Jackson last Thursday, said he’s been enamored with the pop star for most of his life. Now 21, Hernandez was just 5 years old when a neighbor introduced him to the "Thriller" video. Instead of being frightened by the dancing zombies, the child began imitating the dancers. "I wanted to become a monster, too," remembered Hernandez.

And he did. When he was 15 years old, Hernandez and some friends formed "Evolución Jackson." What began on a whim has evolved into a dance company that performs Jackson’s iconic moonwalk and other trademark dance sequences in community theaters. They buy Jackson’s music and videos on the Cuban black market and spend hours going over bootleg copies of old Jackson video tapes to learn his moves.

"We’ve been studying Michael’s dances for six years, and there are still some steps I can’t perfect," said Jackson impersonator Omar Ramos. "He was a genius, and now he’s gone."

Dressed in a threadbare version of the singer’s trademark red jacket, Ramos held a rehearsal of the song "Billy Jean" just hours after learning that the pop star had passed away.  Describing Jackson as "the world’s best entertainer," Ramos said, "It’s an honor to play him."

The performers plan a memorial concert this Wednesday in Mariano, one of Havana’s larger working-class neighborhoods. "No tears will be allowed. Just laughter and dancing," said Ramos.

Now is not the time to bring up MJ's past we all have heard it. Bringing it up when he has passed is disrespectful to the family. Our society is so unsympathetic and just wants to remember such cruel gossip. RIP MJ GOD be with you always, much love
That's it, I was looking for a comparison and I got it from a song writer who puts Jackson in the same category as Mozart.  How ignorant of me not to realize that.  I will have to spending my declining years listening to Jackson and Mozart on different days.

God Almighty have mercy!!!  Anyone who compares Jackson to Mozart is in the same category as those who can't tell the difference between a fine wine and cheap beer, or pig slop from caviar.

But to be fair, perhaps Jackson is the Mozart of the Cuban working classes.  Better yet, Jackson is the "opiate of the people."  I wonder what Che what think of Jackson if he (Che) were still around?  Who knows.  So how does Jackson compare to Bach?  Surely they must have something in common.   They are both white.  Right?

However, before I sign off for now, maybe they should have a Sinatra revival in Cuba to match a few of those vintage 19502 American cars they are still driving around.

Come on Cubans, you can do better than make nutty Jackson an icon.  Far better to stick with Che, and sing some revolutionary songs.  I'm serious.
I love this story...the human side of Cuba, of communism...counter to the "totalitarianism" legends.
I love Cuba and Fidel and I do not leave the USA so I can convert people to communism...what about celebrating and welcoming diversity? (Just what we Like?)??!! Thanks.
Maybe Obama should let the cuban exiles go to Guantanamo Bay and blast Michael Jackson to the cubans on the other side of the fence all day. Maybe then the Castro brothers will leave Cuba after seeing everyone in Cuba is becoming like Michael Jackson crazy (Loco)and freaky.
Ok enough already!  Who cares what the Cubans think about MJ??????  Someone died....as do many others on a daily basis.  Lets focus on getting our country out of the garbage and people like myself back to work already!!!!  PLEASEEEEEEE
RIP MJ
Who cares what the Cubans think?  Who cares what anyone thinks?  Let's move on.  He's dead.  He's gone.  There was less fuss when Kennedy was shot.  Sure his music was good.  But if it had been anyone not a celebrity, they would have been in jail.  This absolutely sickens me.
Michael rest in peace God gave you to the people for 40 years. Then he gave us Barack Obama rest King!

I am so glad the Cubans didn't have to put up with the media distortions and exaggerations.  They were so callous in ripping one man's life apart and prosecuting him in the press. They were nothing but a hateful bunch of gold-digging vultures.  Even now in his death they can't stop talking about how strange he was and the allegations.  It's sickening.
Now for something nice to say...
It has not stopped surprising me how far across the globe Michael Jackson has managed to reach.  I have read messages from people in places I have never even heard of and the enormity of it is mind blowing.  Michael Jackson was not only truly gifted but a beautiful spirit. R.I.P. Michael.  You are profoundly missed.
The man was aquitted, haters stop hating. Don't hat  the player, hate the game.

RIP MJ
At least Cuba has one thing Doesn't care about your life style. Since it's so hard to have a lifestyle there. But I do appreciate that they care for his art. MJ has a Guinness World Record 38 Charities that he has helped around the World. NONE of us CAN'T do THAT NONE. As I said before "1 John 1:8-10" talks about every human being that has existed in the WORLD. INCLUDING US!!!
Long live Cuba & the Reveloution! Now give us your Cigars.
Many Cubans have bootleg satellite dishes, so they do in fact see news (Univision), movies, music, soap operas (tele novelas), programs and porn of the world and are not limited to what is provided by the government on the two government channels.  This idea that they are completely naive to the world due to the government censorship, is inaccurate.  Do they learn about the world in school?  No, they have no sense of geography for example.  But the two government channels will sometimes provide CNN feeds of huge breaking news they feel it's important for them to see, such as coverage of 911 when it happened for example.  They are not as in the dark as people think.
Michael Jackson will be remembered forv his great music and hunanitarian heart. His personal life is still privite and should not become a media show.
For someone who people loves to hate, it is astounding the way he has touched so many, not just by his music, but with his charisma.  Yes he was charismatic. Over to you haters.

JH
R.I.P. MJ - I am a 57 year old "Grandma of 14" from the Fiji Islands - way out here in the Pacific. I doubt if even as much as 25% of your fans know of our country. LOL. Yet you were there for many of my generation through your music, your moves and your very model. You were with us in our joys, our sorrows and our silent quest to "Heal the World - Make it a Better Place: for you and for me and the entire human race"...You were also there for my 3 brothers and 3 sisters, for my 1 daughter and 3 sons and now...you will be there for my 14 grandchildren. R.I.P. MJ
CUBANS ON FIDEL NO TALENT AT ALL , A CRAZY AND GREEN PERSONAL LIFE.
I think that it is pretty sad that so many people are focusing on all of the negative publicity that surrounds MJ's life.  Wow! Who are you to judge?  NO ONE IN THIS WORLD IS PERFECT!! Let's try to remember all of the good that MJ did during his life and less on the reputation tarnishing gossip....RIP MJ..We Will Miss You!!
Just like the Legendary Bob Marley, Michael Jackson have penetrated all racial, cultural, economical, and religious barriers with his Music. RIP
mj was without a question a great entertainer. but to make him a hero ? you must not have kids or your just plain stupid. would you leave your kids with him? and no i'm not a hatter. i love his music . but come on . reallity is reallity.
