Pakistani tribesmen tighten noose around Taliban

UPPER DIR, Pakistan – "The noose around the Taliban is tightening," said 50-year-old Sirajuddin, the leader of a tribal militia based in Dhogbala, a town in the Upper Dir region of Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province. "Our fight will go on to the final victory."

Taliban militants have been pouring into Upper Dir for weeks, fleeing the Pakistan army assault in the adjacent Swat Valley. Sirajuddin, who goes by just one name, said that the army had been bombing the militants’ hideouts in the nearby hills and hit some shops in Dhogbala by mistake. The militants then swarmed down from the mountains, raided the shops and stole all the food.

Sirajuddin, the leader of a tribal militia fighting the Taliban.

Sirajuddin, tall and slim with a neatly cropped salt and pepper beard, spoke softly as he explained the militia’s determination to go after the Taliban. But his voice rose in anger and his lips quivered when he recalled the suicide attack by the Taliban on his mosque on June 5.

"Those criminals killed 40 innocent people at prayer, just because they would not support them. We had to bury 12 children that day," said Sirajuddin. "Tell me, what was their crime?"

The next day, after the funerals, 500 villagers gathered at the home of one of their elders and voted unanimously to avenge the deaths from the mosque bombing and go after the Taliban.  Sirajuddin volunteered to give up his job as a laborer and lead the militia.

Treacherous route
The Pakistan army recently took us on a two-day trip to Upper Dir to see firsthand the battle between these local tribesmen, who are now backed by the Pakistan army, and the Taliban.

The four-hour drive from a Pakistani army helipad adjacent to the Swat Valley to Dhogbala was treacherous.

Carved out from the valley’s rugged lower peaks, the narrow single lane road zigzagged along the emerald green Panjghor River, which flowed down from the snowcapped mountains of the Hindu Kush. Maple and hazelnut trees hugged the route. Our seven-vehicle convoy weaved in and out of the oncoming trucks as we drove higher and higher through miles of mulberry and orange groves that led straight up to the Taliban hideouts.

Our driver, who was nervous and ill-tempered for most of the journey, told us afterwards that he had been sure we were all going to die along the way from a suicide attack or a head-on collision.

Dir, once a princely state in British India, is divided into two regions, Upper and Lower Dir, and borders Afghanistan’s Kunar Province in the west and extends into the Swat Valley in the south. The estimated 1.9 million people who live in the area make their living from forestry and agriculture.

‘Get out of my village!’
When we reached Dhogbala, we met 11-year-old Akhtar Khan. He had his Kalashnikov trained on the surrounding hills as he sat on the roof of a boarded up shop and kept watch. "I quit school," he said. "I am ready to sacrifice my life for my country and fight these people who are giving Islam a bad name. They kidnap and kill and loot and plunder. We want them out of our lands."

Niaz Wali, a 22-year-old laborer, came back from his job in Kashmir to join the fight.  "I am furious over the people who were killed in our mosque," he said. "I say to the Taliban: Get out of my village!"

So far, says Sirajuddin, he and his 500 men have killed dozens of Taliban militants and burned dozens more of their homes and hideouts to the ground.  The Pakistani army has come to help with air support, ammunition and weapons. It leaders say that more and more of the tribesmen are joining in the fight, which has already sent more than 100,000 people fleeing the violence in both Upper and Lower Dir.

"We are doing all we can do," said Sirajuddin. "The army is doing all it can do, too. Now the government must come in and help our people who have lost their homes and all of their possessions."

I am proud of the people of Pakistan. This is exactly what I am talking about. The US, UN, NATO and other countries don't have to get invloved in this conflict. Pakistan needs to take care of it's own business. As far as food and shelter goes, I applaud the US - as always in providing millions of dollars in aid, especially Angelina Jolie. Question that people in this blog could answer: Where are all the Muslim countries, why aren't they helping all these refugees. I am from India and even Indians are donating money. These people have nothing to do with the war, they just want to work hard and strive towards been successful, just like we do here in USA. God bless America. I am really fortunate to live in this country.
All I can say is I have the utmost admiration for people willing to sacrifice their lives for what they believe in.  Absolutely no one should be in fear of their life for the religion they have.  Freedom of choice should be a god given right to everyone.  My heart and prayers go out to those who lost loved ones from the chicken**** attacks on innocent people.

Keep the fight up!!
The Pakistanis have been warriors for many   centuries. They do not need young Americans, or anyone else to fight their wars for them. They will fight to the death to propagate freedom, and defend the faith from this ruthless dictator who lies and kills the innocent young women who only want their God given rights to a normal life like the women of the unoppressed world have. Use her name as your battle cry, & put her picture in the corner of your flag, wave it to have your people rally to your side. Don't let the brutes, and privileged attack your mothers and daughters, swarm them one at a time until YOU have the weapons that they turned on that sweet innocent child, leaving her to bleed to death in the streets. I ask what offence did she commit to deserve to have her young life snuffed out at the very beginning ? After the common people have taken control of your country she should be given a state memorial service in remembrance of her and a coin  struck with her likeness to keep her sacrifice in the mind and hearts of your youth. I pray in my own way to my God, for the grieving parents as only a fellow parent who has lost a child of his own can know their suffering. God is great! Peace be with you, Ahmen.
Its too bad it took a massacre within their village to get them up off their a55es and fighting the Taliban. If they would have stepped up when the Taliban began setting up camp in their area and nipped it in the bud, 40 of their fellow villagers would still be alive. Maybe they can be an inspiration to other villages and get a pro-active resistance to the Taliban going, before other villages suffer the same fate. The fact that they are fighting the Taliban is great, that its a retribution/revenge thing kinda dampens the spirit of what they're doing. They and all other "Peace-Loving" muslims should be doing this all over the mideast to rid Islam of those who hijacked it for evil purposes. Until the Silent Majority of Muslims start fighting to take back their faith, I don't have alot of sympathy or support for them.....
Encouraging to see a positive report from our side. Also somewhat amusing to see the turn of opinions from a few months ago when Pakistanis were being called all sorts of wild things.

Next step for you, the international media, would be to bring to the world's attention the vile and despicable nature of our nation's supposed leaders, who have been passing the buck to each other for generations in order to keep it within the family (reminds me of post WW1 Europe, all the bloody kings were cousins and grandkids and what not of each other. anyways).

You need to expose them to the world, their crimes & the unbelievable corruption that has plagued this country for generations. The people here need to know that the world is aware of these people, we need to know we have an ear outside the country.

Dont just look at us when u need help with the WOT, when you basically just tag along with whoever happens to be in power. Look at us otherwise as well, when we need global awareness of the failed government this country has had for years.

Are these the same tribesmen who have been harboring the Taliban and Al Queda for several years?
Salute to everybody fighting against the menace. I have been to this area. Most friendliest and charming people you can see. The problem is their innocence. You wont find a single school in miles and miles. Please support them as much as you can. Verbally, financialy and anyway you can.
Hey Steve Gardner, Churubusco, Indiana that's mighty pompous of you. A willingness to die for something just ain't enough eh guy. MAYBE before they have a change of building, they have to clean house, maybe. Or might you suggest they build their democracy and government in the midst of these radicals? dude, Go back are read what you wrote, its really dumb.
Here is the other side of the story that nobody is discussing or seriously thinking about

Pakistani military action and the way they handled it as far as displaced folks (in millions) is deplorable at best.
Remember 80's mujahadin (so called muslim hired fighters to fight russians) produced an exodus of people who later converted to taliban in the 90's when abondened and left unattended. Now you have another generation of displaced people who are for the most part abondened by pakistani govt and military. Now you are looking at another frankestien monster coming to be born in another 10 years, well actually may be even less even if the taliban gone. Pakistani military/govt will just use these people to make another monster and then fight them with foreign aid and the whole cycle will be repeated all over again. Already the lashkars(Sirajuddin and company) are being made by pakistani army who will enroll these displaced people when they go back to make a new taliban like militia. As long as this mentality will continue this problem will not go away.
Thats why you can't give the enemy being al qaida and the taliban free land and expect them to play nicely. Feed a terrorist and he'll just comeback wanting more...really no better then a street bum. Stand up to them in numbers and they'll finally get the picture there not wanted and they deface the whole relifious culture of there supposed following.
My thoughts and prayers are out to Sirajuddin,   Akhtar Khan and Niaz Wali, and all the peoples of Pakistan, Afganistan etc where there is a growing and strong will to oust the criminal thugs like the Taliban and restore peace to their land.  These 3 individuals and their countrymen that are with them are at least taking the necessary first steps toward a life of peace and true freedom.  I hope our US Generals and President Obama are  helping with as much support as possible.  They need food, shelter, medicine etc, and we need to help them out.  We should be patrolin the Afganistan border and the air space around pakistan and Afganistan in order to capitalize on their efforts.  The fleeing enemy has endless resources including aircraft that we need to shoot out of the air.  I hope those 3 men together bring us Bin Laden--dead or alive--and get the 50 million dollar bounty for doing so.  I'll bet 50 million green backs would change their lives substantially.  I hope these brave people achieve that which they are in search of.  Hey President Obama, it looks like a good time to fully implement
our Afganistan plan, the sooner you clean it up, the sooner you can bring our US soldiers home??  The endless money pit might be a side benefit too--you think??  Again, I am praying for all of you affected by the wars in your homelands.
Ever wonder why so many wars are fighting over religion? Wars will never end as long as people fight about religion.
God walks with YOU, Sirajuddin and Akhtar Khan. Be strong.
Fight for what is right.
I personnally do not understand many religions around the world. But so far, I have never heard of any of them that says that you can kill someone under the name of any "GOD" (or religious figure)
Loony liberals are tearing their hair out, because with Muslim fighting Muslim, how can they use this conflict to smear white boy devils some more?
If we start supplying random tribal militias with aid, the Taliban will claim these militias are puppets of the US and will lose considerable support among the population. The majority of Pakistani's may be waking up to the fact that the Taliban are evil, but most of them still hate the US.

The way to support them is to let them fix their own problems, and continue to support the government which then supports the tribesmen. We as Americans should have learned by now that post Cold-war we can't just throw weapons and money at random groups and forget about them, lest we create yet another Taliban.
Good work by these milita, it is finally heartening to see that people are turning against these sycophants once created by the CIA to end the cold war who grew on US tax dollars. Now all the AID agencies and the US should make sure that money they are providing to Pakistan should help these milita and really reach these poor people and not fatten the elite military class living in plush bungalows in Islamabad.
History has shown that the Pathans (Pashtuns), who are brave, proud, and fierce fighters, have never been defeated! They will fight the Taliban to the very last person! What a shame the media does not give this more positive coverage! Unfortunately, way to many people are misled to believe that all or the majority of Muslims/Islamics are terrorists. The Pathans do not want terrorists in their region anymore than we Americans do! May God bless the Pathans and their mission!
God bless you. I will never understand what it's like to be in a war firsthand. It must be a very dangerous situation, and I salute you for putting yourself in harm's way for the sake of your people, your country, and your religion. Finish the job that us Americans are failing to do. The local people of Pakistan know much more about the geography and about the Taliban than the US does. so it only seems logical that they go out to fight if they choose, and the  US should supply aid. We must rid the Earth of this Taliban plague once and for all, and restore peace in an area filled with discontent. What a glorious day it will be when it will be just as safe to walk around Pakistan as it is to walk in my quiet suburbian town. It can be done, you are doing it, and I support you all the way. God bless you, Yahweh bless you, Allah bless you, it doesn't matter which religion someone is. Tolerance is key. And I am very glad that to see that people fighting others not because they see Shi'ites getting killed, or Sunnis getting killed, but because they see people getting killed, and that is a major step toward tolerance.
I give most of the credit for Obama here… He is the one who take a step to engage tribesmen's for a common propose. He is a true genius driving the country in the right direction in all front…
Dang, I haven't been to upper Dir since 1991. Beautiful valley, gracious people but very conservative -- a lot like Arkansas. Pretty quiet back then, all anyone cared about was the opium crop. It's good to see the Yusufzais standing up to the inferior, imported brand of 'Islam.'
Great article.  Kudos to the the writer and photographer.
Unfortunately, as Americans, we believe everybody can and should fight for democracy and freedom.  That is a fallacy.  Take it from somebody who has been to Afghanistan, dealt with the local nationals, and fought the Taliban.  These people do not care about democracy or western ideals of freedom.  They want to feed their family, grow their crops, and have lots of sons.  Their only motivation is to be left alone to do  so.  Get in the way of that at your own peril.  They don't care about America or the Taliban.  They care about their own lives and the lives of the other villagers.  If America bombs their village accidently, or during a fight, they hate us from that point forward.  If the Taliban beheads them in the town-square, they are now on our side.  It is that simple.  Unfortunately, we use our own view of ideal society to understand them and it is a mistake.
I believe that those who worship, believe that they should try to create heaven here on earth.  They should wait until they get to heaven to live the life they think we all should.  It amazes me how willing these ppl are to die, life should be enjoyed, the earth and its beautly admired and cherished seeing how brief is our time in this world.  The other observation I must mention is how similar religious right wing fanatics are.  Can one honestly tell the difference in ideology between the taliban, al Queda, the mullahs in Iran, and the religious right in the U.S.?.  Intolerance seem to be the indentifying trait amongst them.   Ah, the folly of mankind.
This is gut-wrenching.  God bless them and keep them safe as they retake their country from the devils that willfully kill innocents.
The Taliban and Al Qaeda are not Muslims. They are  infidels and must be destroyed. Their selfish  criminal act murder innocent men, women, and children during prayer. They insult Alah in his own house and disgrace all of Islam. May all the true and faithful Muslims unite and defeat these infidels and show the world what true Muslims are all about.

May God guide and protect you on your holy mission.
Keep fighting, freedom will be yours.
It is good to see the local Pashtun again involved.
They were the ones who drove the Russians out of Afganistan, & the Taliban are no where near as well equiped as were the Soviets. They may have more determination than did the Soviet invaders, but it is doubtful that they have the determination of the locals, who are really fighting for themselves in this battle.
May Allah bless their struggle & The Lord be on their side !
As George Burns once said, "I've preformed for all faiths & I'm not about to blow a chance at Hevan on a technicality!".
it has finally gotton to the point that things like invading and dictating will no longer be ignored but reconized as something that no one will tolerate.
So, Sirajuddin, Niaz Wali, and 11-year-old Akhtar Khan are willing to die for their country.  But, are they willing to live for their country?
Steve Gardner, Churubusco, Indiana
Born in a Country with every advantage you have the gall to make a comment like this. You liberals are nothing but a bunch of bags of hot air. With no information but plenty of opinions you have the audacity to to pontificate to these people fighting for thier lives. Those boys fully expect to die for what they believe in. What comes next is pointless to even imagine. No wonder people of the world hate us, you jackass.

I am absolutely thrilled and inspired by this story that the pakistani tribesmen see the Taliban for the self-serving evil thugs that they really are. This is what will truly turn the tide against this terrorist horror. I agree with the others, I pray that they get all the support they need to fight this battle and to rebuild their lives, they cerainly deserve it. You all will be in my prayers, God bless and strenthen you.
Dear brave, wise PAKISTANI TRIBESMEN,
God Is Great.  He rewards you and honors you.  You fulfill His Will against oppresion and injustice.  You have earned my respect greatly.
Mike Livingston - Arizona
i would like to see michael moore go there @ make one of his flicks! wether you agreed with bush or not his foreign policy against the axis of evil inspired freedom loving people in that part of the world to take fight against tyranny.he said their democracy may not look like ours but it will be theirs.he said democracy is americas gift to the world but the yearning to be free was put in mens hearts by god. i pray pres. obama follows bushes lead @ supplies these brave people like reagan @ charlie wilson did the mujahadeen. coward jimmy carter would hang them out to dry,he never met a tyrant he didnt love.obama should support freedom @ democratic movement in the middle east ie;iran, lebanon @ irag palestine, not kiss @ bow to saudi despots. let freedom ring
I commend Sirajuddin, Niaz Wali, and 11-year-old Akhtar Khan; these are true Pakistanis...the people Pakistan need, we may very well doubt them… but I believe that the time has come that the wonderful people of Pakistan have realized “enough is enough".  And want to get their lives back and get rid of these (Taliban) so called 'Muslims’, they are not only disgrace to Islam and their country but to all peace loving peoples of all faith across the world.
Modern Societies must help the tribsmen through Pakistani institutions to make peace and hormony. Help is also required to upgrade the Pakistani institutions. It is the beauity of democracy that people should give right to live as they like without forceing others to their way. This is also principle of Islam.
The war against the Taliban will determine Pakistan's future. For too long the Republicans have used Pakistan for its geo-political importance and the Democrats have plainly ignored the country. It is heartening to see Obama give weight to the important issues.
Pakistan does not want to beg for assistance, it seeks trading oppootunities. Yet the leaders of the developed world will not lift tarrifs giving alms in the form of donations instead. It is in the entire world's best interest that Pakistan remains economicaly, politicaly and militarily strong. And the way to do that is to allow Pakistan to participate in the world economy.
Please help lift the tarrif and quotas from Pakistani imports by buying Pakistani products. We are a proud and capable nation, give us a chance.
It does my heart well to see these militias fighting for themselves. My son, who is an Army Ranger has already served in Afghan once and most surely will be going back. I'd like to know our troops have some backup in that God forsaken place.

God has a special place for the Taliban
He calls it Hell.
Poor Velandy (re: Velandy Manohar, 06/22/2009 comment).  You have been completely westernized by your professors and civil structure of the West.  You volunteer to help by making printed "material" available on how to manage disasters, and still more literature from from the American Psychiatric Association.

You manage a situation of the heart, the soul, and the earth itself (because real war is in the dirt, muddied with blood) by offering pamphlets and literature.  You see, these people do not need such things.  This is how we try to solve every social ill in America -- by study upon study, by talking heads analyzing everything around the clock on CNN, by quoting experts who say such and such.  And yet, our crime, our divorce, our drug abuse, our pornographic industries continue to soar.

No, Velandy.  Leave these people to the more simple devices of history.  A strong heart, the lack of fear to say what is right and wrong without regard to political propriety, and the courage to act and to sacrifice ... to confront that which they find abhorrent.  Not to study it, consider it, spend millions of taxpayer dollars to analyze it and then in the end do nothing meaningful about it, as we do time and time again in America.
Nice story, it's sad that when they had hundreds of chances to write stories like this, they refused to in Iraq just because of who was president.  Just shows how low the media really is today only trying to push one party rather than reporting the news...
God Bless all of the Pakistani people that are fighting for thier freedom of those that are killing innocent people and giving Islam a bad name. "To all the terrorists and extremists on this planet, THE WHOLE WORLD has you cornered, more and more everyday!!
YES, GOD IS GREAT!!

CLS    NJ, USA
T-ban/AQ have hijacked a great religion. Wat God orders the murder of innocents? Not ANY that I know. The tribesmen need support, by the P-stani Army, or a special force that can assimilate into thier culture, speak thier language, and can train and organize them. The US Army has such a force, but, would they be welcomed? Wat a great oppurtunity this is, and hopefully it will work out, some way. The slaughter of innocents...its said in the Koran if you kill 1 innocent, its as if you have killed all mankind..these swine have manipulated islam to suit thier ambitions. If there is a God, [i say yes] He will strike them down. Barbaric cretins, DIE...
You go boys! Give them a dose of their own medicine...
How can we average folks help the people affected adversely by this frightful, but sadly necessary time of upheaval?  How can I help from where I am, to provide the necessities of life, humble as my simple offering may seem?

Does anyone know any specific, humanity targetting philanthropy that even "the least of us" can contribute to, to relieve the suffering?

Yes, even we poor in materialistic necessities hope to be able to give the little we can and join others to somehow fill some need to such brave and admired servants of God and our fellow human beings.

Thank you to anyone who can provide such directions and may God bless every such true and loving kindnesses.
simper fi freedom fighters the world is watching.
Jack Perry,

What are you talking about? Only help those with money. We have spent billions on third world countries and destitute peoples. This has been the history of the U.S.A. Dems and Reps have historically poured our tax dollars down the drain of these ungrateful populations. We need to start worrying about our own and stop trying to save the planet. The more that we undertake these missions, the more we are hated throughout the world. It is like our own welfare recipiants. The more you give the more they resent, the more dependent they become, the more violent and extreme they become and the more they demand. At least give it to our citizens some who need it and many who are just worthless.
bryan you have never been at war there are no rules towared survival.youdon't get to call the police I remember when I retufrned home from dummies would ask me what did i do in the marines everyh last on of those jerks was upset withmy response, so i shortened it by saying i killed people that stopped the questionsand they considered my crazy. Are you one of those jerks because your reponse to battle sounds very famil____.
I agree with the statement made in a preceeding post, "this is what everyone needs to see". A story that embodies the hope and of course the change in the world's affairs we have all waited to see. These events are by surely meritous of our support, by any means neccessary. And like others in this post, my heart goes out to these fighting for their freedom.
I hope the Governments realize that DURING THE FIGHTING AND after all the fighting and the extremists are gone, They need to provide these villages with basic service. I.E. money for schools, electricity, food, jobs etc etc. Money for thier infarastructure. Fix any collaterall damage as the result of the fighting.
If not then this will all be for nothing.

Another extremist wil be in charge. History has taught us time and time again, if the government of a country will not provide thier people with basic services to survive then they will turn to who ever will.
