Iran protests make headlines in China, too

BEIJING – Wow. People in Iran have the right to elect their own president? Candidates are allowed to participate in TV debates and give speeches to their supporters, just like in the United States? And they are allowed to publicly protest?

This comes as news to many in China who have long viewed Iran as an extremely conservative Muslim country where women have to cover their hair and bodies with scarves and robes. It’s mostly known here for leaders who openly challenge the United States and play cat-and-mouse over their stubborn nuclear power policies.

But people in Iran, usually seen as so mysterious and different from China, do enjoy many rights not endowed to Chinese citizens – such as voting and going out on the streets to express their discontent.

So it comes as a surprise to see that China’s mainstream media coverage of the post-election crisis in Iran has been fairly thorough. The protests and resulting bloodshed were reported all week in newspapers and on Web sites, with vivid videos and pictures.

There were even articles by academics who had expressed fears that images of protesters would be purposely blocked by Chinese authorities, so as not to trigger memories of the violent crackdown on the student movement in Beijing 20 years ago this month. Apparently their predictions were wrong.

The coverage included a healthy dose of analysis by Middle East experts, discussing the election results and the growing protests. But they did not say much about the events’ influence on China, despite the fact China is Iran’s biggest oil trading partner, as well as Iran’s biggest business partner in Asia.

Lively debate
Chinese Internet users have also engaged in lively debates in virtual chatrooms. After some discussion of actual events, the conversation always seems to switch to questions like: "What is America doing in Iran?" (It seems in China’s most active online chatrooms, Uncle Sam is involved in everything.)

"People in Iran should overthrow their Islamic maniac and war provoker Mahmoud Ahmadinejad," said one commenter on the most popular Internet chatroom, Tian Ya

That comment received an angry reply: "Oh really? Are you calling on Iranians to overthrow someone elected by themselves? War provoker? Tell me, has Iran in the past few decades provoked more wars than the democratic U.S.A?"

VIDEO: China wants censorship software on computers

That was met by: "It doesn’t matter who is the next Iranian president, hardliners or reformers! As long as they keep confronting the U.S., we should support them!"

Another comment stirred some controversy: "Isn’t it the same with America? They brainwash their people and shift people’s attention with the war in Iraq."

That comment received a sarcastic reply referring to China’s own restrictive policies: "Oh yes America brainwashes their people too? How? Do they use the Green Dam [software] to filter content online? Or does their statistics bureau give you fake data? Or do they block the Internet?"

But with the Iranian government now blocking social networking websites like Twitter and YouTube, any jealousy Chinese citizens may have fostered for their right to vote and protest likely switched to deep sympathy. As Chinese citizens, we are all too familiar with censorship.

Iranian women are beautiful. No wonder they don't want the " good ole boys" to control them. I think hard line Islam is doomed to be replaced by modern, progressive versions. Electronics have opened up the world to freedom.
It's time to tell it like it is.  Criminals control every nation in this " free world " that we live in.  Get used to it for it's not going to change in our lifetime.  Everyone should just try to live the best life they can where ever they may live.  In other words, live and let live!
It kills me when Americans label legitimate resistant to occupation, terrorism. I think those who do such should concentrate more on ending terrorism and abolishing it in our homeland. Terrorist organizations like the KKK, White Citizen Councils, Neo-Nazi's and the Republican Party. Hezbollah and Hamas which Iran supports are resisting occupation and subjugation of the Palestinian People by a Terrorist state israel.  They are legitimate in what the do no matter who Bush labeled as Terrorist.  He and israel are obstacles to peace. israel wants all of Palestinian land and no peace.  Bush made secret deals for them to continue and grow their occupation of more land.  I support Hezbollah and Hamas.  Both organizations are in my prayers and I pray you keep up the good work you do until the israeli terrorist are off Palestinian land.
may god watch out and do whats right. for man seems to have lost that talent
I hope everybody in the world is looking at this. I am a single guy living in north central pennsylvania.
47 and read about all the problems in the places of extremizim and the people that are not right. We don't have them problems here. We wouldn't have problems on a whole if people would just let them the people rule
The republic of Teran needs organized ballot counters.
The Chinese cause few problems, except poisioning people with inferior products {including their own people}..........Iranians are Mooslim, and that means they're CRAZY!
The brave Iranian civilian pictured with the toy gun is a vivid reminder why the right to bare arms will always be paramount to maintaining a government for the people and by the people...The Iranian government has been supporting terrorism throughout the world...I suspect that a determined Iranian public will deal with their government in much the same way...God throughout recorded history has repeated this justice...your fate has been decided by your action.
Unrest in Iran:
To be alive is to be Present in the roll call of Life each and everyday, and it must be done only with our existence to be FREE as a people. Iran, your country is currently on a speeding train and it has no brakes.

The Youth of Iran, the sick & tired,  the meek will forever change the Old with authentic possibilities and most importantly, the FREEDOM to exist on this great planet Earth as a FREE Human Race.

Iran the world is watching, and most of us are 110% behind you.
Journey on to Freedom,

The chinese people will learn and make a process in their political reform. But they need some time to change.
The truth about the election is clear and obvious.  So, where are these disputes coming from?  Who are these protestors?  I found a great article describing what is actually going on in Iran and why the metropolitan areas are up in arms:

why does everything have to boil down to a matter of religion? maybe communist russia was onto something when they banned religious gatherings. more people have died because of religion than anything else
I GUESS THE ONLY THING THOSE THUGS IN IRAN WILL UNDERSTAND IS THAT IF THEY KEEP UP THEIR THREATS TO THEIR OWN PEOPLE AND THREATS TO OTHER COUNTRIES, THEY WILL WIND UP IN ASHES. AS FOR NORTH KOREA, IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT RUSSIA AND CHINA FINALLY REALIZE THAT NORTH KOREA IS A THREAT TO PEACE WORLD WIDE AND ALSO A THREAT TO THEMSELVES. THERE IS NO TIME LEFT TO TALK TO THEM. EVERYTIME YOU TRY THEY DEMAND SOMETHING ELSE OR BACKS OFF OF PREVIOUS PROMISES. CHINA AND RUSSIA DOES NOT WANT TO SEE SOUTH KOREA OF JAPAN ARM THEMSELVES WITH NUCLEAR WEAPONS. SO IT IS UP TO THEM TO TELL NORTH KOREA TO KNOCK IT OFF OR THEY WILL ALSO PUT VERY HARD PREASURE ON THEM. LET SEE WHAT THEY DO. IF BOTH RUSSIA AND CHINA DO NOTHING THAN IT IS UP TO US TO BACK OFF ON OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM AND CUT ALL ECONOMIC TIES.
It's true tha even the US has a history of human rights violation even as recent as recently as last year. It is easy to condemn far off cultures while apathetically viewing our own failings.
Hopefully the Islamic Republic will experiance a change of leadership, both in the presidency and a change of Ayatollahs.
We need to let some of the other Super Powers pich in and do more the USA is always getting involved to help keep world peace. China, Russia and Japan need to step up to the plate and show the world that they want the same thing and start helping out.
War is the stupid thing to do. We are anticipating world war 3 if we are not careful and sensitive about others, for instance in Palestine-Israel, North Korean-US, Somolia-US, Pakistan/US-Taleban, Afghanistan/US-Taleban just to name a few. Have we not learn from the world war 1 and 2? Let have peace and be tolerance. In war there no winner but both are LOSER. Would you like to see, your son/daugther, father/mother and other innosent people die? Let have peace and dialogue with an open ear and heart. There is no 1 man solution it takes both parties to understanding each other and respect each other country needs then the matter will be at rest. NO WAR PLEASE.
If China becomes a country with democracy it will break apart just like the Soviet Union. China does have freedom but to a point which it must be control by the Gov. Do freedom have to be just like the U.S??? China is China / U.S is U.S. Let us run our own country.
I think for the fist time we are begining to hear the true voicce of Iranians that has been supressed for far too long. While I think the turn is unfortunate but to look at Iranians come together for the first and demand that their fundamental human rights be up held despite the odds is glorious for me. I think the people are sick and tired and are willing to move on. True democracy is what Iran want.
Even if Ayatollah Rafsanjani becomes the new Supreme Leader, and Mr. Mousavi becomes the new President of Iran, how much safer will all of us be?  Won't it still be an Islamic Republic, a religious dictatorship? Will they institute a "kinder, more gentle" religious dictatorship?

On that note, how much more freedom will the Iranian people have under two "new" leaders?  What do we mean by "freedom" under a relgious dictatorship?  What kind of freedom do the young people of Iran want?  I'm all for freedom (whatever that means at any given time, and in any given country), but take a look at U.S. culture and ask yourself if Iranians want freedom a la current Americana style?

Guess this means freedom for women to parade around shopping malls with their boobs hanging out, lots of tatoos, navels on display, and best of all, FAT.  Add to this couples necking in public and lots of ear, nose, and tongue rings, and future generations of Iranians will have all the freedom they want.  Right?
The question is always:  What kind of freedom do people really want wherever they live?

What kind of freedom does Mano Bakh want his fellow Iranians to have?
That is ridiculous. There is no comparison between situation of the protests of unarmed citizen in Iran, and the natives of Oka. The protestors of Iran are justly demanding a recount of their votes, against the wishes of a regime that has demonstrated the will to torture and kill its enemies. The natives at Oka, who were armed with assault rifles and guns, were illegally blocking a road in protest over some disputed land that was slated for development. In the process of the conflict, they killed a Quebec police officer. Afterwards, the Canadian Armed forces were sent to confront the situation, there was no fighting after that. The Natives live in Canada, a country  that values human rights with citizens who feel guilty over the suffering of natives in its past. The protestors of Iran are defending the essence of democracy in Iran, the natives were (in effect) demanding property or money. The protesters of Iran are exhibiting some of the greatest elements of the human spirit. The natives were exhibiting something else.

In reply to:
Anybody old enough to remember Kent State?? Or for Canadians, the savage attack by the army on Native protesters in Oka, Quebec.
You can never be to sure about those anti-American posts in Chinese forums. I heard the Communist Party pays members a few cents per post that supports it. You know, to "guide" public opinion in the "correct path."
