Iran protests make headlines in China, too

BEIJING – Wow. People in Iran have the right to elect their own president? Candidates are allowed to participate in TV debates and give speeches to their supporters, just like in the United States? And they are allowed to publicly protest?

This comes as news to many in China who have long viewed Iran as an extremely conservative Muslim country where women have to cover their hair and bodies with scarves and robes. It’s mostly known here for leaders who openly challenge the United States and play cat-and-mouse over their stubborn nuclear power policies.

But people in Iran, usually seen as so mysterious and different from China, do enjoy many rights not endowed to Chinese citizens – such as voting and going out on the streets to express their discontent.

So it comes as a surprise to see that China’s mainstream media coverage of the post-election crisis in Iran has been fairly thorough. The protests and resulting bloodshed were reported all week in newspapers and on Web sites, with vivid videos and pictures.

There were even articles by academics who had expressed fears that images of protesters would be purposely blocked by Chinese authorities, so as not to trigger memories of the violent crackdown on the student movement in Beijing 20 years ago this month. Apparently their predictions were wrong.

The coverage included a healthy dose of analysis by Middle East experts, discussing the election results and the growing protests. But they did not say much about the events’ influence on China, despite the fact China is Iran’s biggest oil trading partner, as well as Iran’s biggest business partner in Asia.

Lively debate
Chinese Internet users have also engaged in lively debates in virtual chatrooms. After some discussion of actual events, the conversation always seems to switch to questions like: "What is America doing in Iran?" (It seems in China’s most active online chatrooms, Uncle Sam is involved in everything.)

"People in Iran should overthrow their Islamic maniac and war provoker Mahmoud Ahmadinejad," said one commenter on the most popular Internet chatroom, Tian Ya

That comment received an angry reply: "Oh really? Are you calling on Iranians to overthrow someone elected by themselves? War provoker? Tell me, has Iran in the past few decades provoked more wars than the democratic U.S.A?"

VIDEO: China wants censorship software on computers

That was met by: "It doesn’t matter who is the next Iranian president, hardliners or reformers! As long as they keep confronting the U.S., we should support them!"

Another comment stirred some controversy: "Isn’t it the same with America? They brainwash their people and shift people’s attention with the war in Iraq."

That comment received a sarcastic reply referring to China’s own restrictive policies: "Oh yes America brainwashes their people too? How? Do they use the Green Dam [software] to filter content online? Or does their statistics bureau give you fake data? Or do they block the Internet?"

But with the Iranian government now blocking social networking websites like Twitter and YouTube, any jealousy Chinese citizens may have fostered for their right to vote and protest likely switched to deep sympathy. As Chinese citizens, we are all too familiar with censorship.

The Chinese people shouldn't get jealous over what the Persian people have. This election was a farce designed to pacify an oppressed population. The election was basically a beauty contest between 4 men who were hand picked by the Islamo-fascist dictatorship that controls Iran. And they were running for a post that is mainly ceremonial. No matter who is installed as president the regime will still be exporting terrorism, abusing it's citizens and racing to build nukes in order to threaten and possibly incinerate other nations. Yes the Chinese people should demand freedom and democracy like their counterparts in Iran. But it would be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire to use the radical Islamic theocracy as their role model.
Anybody old enough to remember Kent State?? Or for Canadians, the savage attack by the army on Native protesters in Oka, Quebec.
I sent this prediction to CNN.
Thursday June 18th at 10:40 PM CT.
As a high ranking naval officer I escaped the 1979 Iranian revolution. After 30 years in seclusion I broke my silence and authored the book Escaping Islam. For more information you mat view www.EscapingIslam.com
I have my prediction as what is going to happen within the next sixty days in Iran.
Mr. Rafsanjani is the chairman of the 86 members of Assembly of Experts who have the responsibility to watch, dismiss and select the supreme leader. I predict that Ayatollah Khamenei will not change his mind for either total vote counts or supporting a new election (This happened already as predicted. Ayatollah Rafsanjani will call an emergency meeting of Assembly of Experts and with majority vote Ayatollah Khamenei will be removed and Ayatollah Rafsanjani will become the new Supreme Leader. He will announce a new election and Mr. Mousavi with the help of Ayatollah Khatami will become the new president.

All of this is not good for World Peace.  We have to many places that are hot spots waiting for someone to light the fuse. Stop this madness.
I just don't understand why everyone thinks it is our fault that people went freedom. It is the natural order of things to want to be free.
I am white and have lived in China for 6 years. The Chinese SHOULD be jealous of what the Iranians have. If I stood in Tianmen for 15 minutes - just stood there, a soldier would come over and tell me to move. If I went to an internet cafe to get online, I had to show my passport, they had to take a photo and there was a police officer 24/7(this started in 2006). The authoritarian government spills over into other areas of life. In the middle of my Mandarin class, I felt the call of nature. I left quietly and returned 5 minutes later. On my return, the teacher yelled at me for 5 minutes for causing her to lose her face because I did not ask permission first(I am 30 years old). At McDonald's, I saw an old lady ask for 3 sugars and instead of 3 sugars she got a long argument about 2 sugars is the rule. On TV, you often see adult parents hitting their adult children. Everything is cheap in China and the cheapest thing is human life. Taiwan? Slowly(very slowly) they are progressing.
"In the face of escalating public discontent and under pressure from foreign allies, Marcos called a snap presidential election for 1986, with more than a year left in his term. He selected Arturo Tolentino as his running mate. The opposition united behind Aquino's widow, Corazon, and her running mate, Salvador Laurel.
The final tally of the National Movement for Free Elections, an accredited poll watcher, showed Aquino winning by almost 800,000 votes. However, the government tally showed Marcos winning by almost 1.6 million votes. This appearance of blatant fraud by Marcos led the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines and the United States Senate to condemn the elections. Both Marcos and Aquino traded accusations of vote-rigging. Popular sentiment in Metro Manila sided with Aquino, leading to a massive, multisectoral congregation of protesters and the gradual defection of the military led by Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile and Acting Chief of Staff Fidel V. Ramos."

There are precedents for everything.
At 65 years old, it’s sad to me that the beginning of the 21 century is no better than the beginning of the 20th century.  You'd think our elected officials around the world would realize by now that modern warfare leaved few winners, just a lot of death, destruction, misery and hatred behind it.  Having nukes makes it even worse.  It’s like having a gun with one bullet.  Once you fire it, there is nothing left.  The principal of MAD is still alive and well and we will be lucky to have a world to survive in, let alone a country.  The frightening specter of bio weapons is even more alarming.  There had to be a better way, unless all these lunatics want all of us dead.  In that case, human being will at last stopping killing other human beings in the name of something.  Sadder still is the fact that these leaders will no more listen to the voice of reason than those at the beginning of the 20th century did.

RDB
It makes you proud to be an American to see how fairly opposite politicians such as Bush and Obama can be peacefully elected and power transferred.  Take note world; this is what true democracy looks like.  I only wish our system was engineered to allow for a greater number of effective political parties to choose from.
I am curious Mr.Bakh under what grounds do you speak of your prediction? Why would this meeting of the council of experts not have happened before? You speak now as though the moderates have more power in the society than they did before the election.  What do you feel the intent of the change in the supreme leadership would bring to the country?  Are you predicting a change in the ideological mantra of a new leadership to work more cooperatively with the United States?  Not as a bow down format, but one that is engaged in the process towards a peaceful condition in the Middle East? Where Iran is respected as a legitimate Regional power broker. Do you see Rafsanjani and Khatami interested in the Obama Approach towards Obama's Middle Eastern Comprehensive peace intitiative? supported by leadership from Syria, Iran, Turkey and Israel exchanging dialogue and possibly land for peace in the future?

A.H.
"Anybody old enough to remember Kent State?? Or for Canadians, the savage attack by the army on Native protesters in Oka, Quebec. "

I'm old enough to remember that the Army never attacked the Native "protestors" (actually a heavily armed militia with weapons smuggled in from the US). Nice try at rewriting history there!
Thanks Mano for your prediction.
I think all people talking could possibly bring peace provided they do not identify themselves with their government or country for ideology.
To have peace you must hate war more than anything and love freedom for all people more than your life.
Should we be more concerned with the Chinese business dealings, and probable support (with Russia) of Iran's nuclear aspirations, or comments from "our friends" the Chinese like "As long as they keep confronting the U.S., we should support them!"???
Oh, let me remind you that China is the largest supplier of counterfeit goods to the U.S., and is most likely behind many attempted hackings into our governmental computer systems... Including the Pentagon... Not to mention they are routinely trying to poison us... And now they own billions of our debt... Great! Keep an eye on these people!
World peace? Really? Peace is an illusion. There will always be some conflict somewhere and the way everything works in nature everyone is fighting to be bigger and better than the next guy in order to survive. Peace and control are man made concepts. They are ideal but for something like that to come to fruition you would have to change the nature of man and the universe. When you find peace somewhere tell me and we'll talk.
What is the difference whether Iran had a fake election and is run by a dictator, or America has been taken over by a dictator and is over turning
every moral guid line that has been established in the past. Unborn baby killer, no morals, no conscience
no principles.
@TJC yes and this is one of the major hot spots. How or why should anyone stop it? It is the Iranian poeples right to do what they are doing.
Mano Mano Mano...just because these events are fortuitous for you and your book sales doesn't mean you need to get online and shamelessly hock the damn thing.  If this continues for any length of time, eventually one of the nutso cable "news" channels will run out of "experts" to "analyze" the situation, and your phone will start ringing!

In the mean time, you might want to cover the rest of your bases and hit up FoxNews, too...
this a "joke" election ruled by the same mullahs and clergy thats is conservo..hey mullahs , get the pix there, let people Vote whatever they want to. that is freedom and if enough freedom is carried on.it will give a big taste to others such as china and cuba..and of course n kores..but, i dont know about obama there . i guess he wants it to for those friendly arab and moslem iranians .. from these people ..taste of freedom is very very good!..
It appears that the supreme Islamic leader is positioning himself to blame the United States for the Unrest of the people in Iran.. Again we will be blamed for what happens there. This will give Iran the voice and the will to continue with their Nuclear Advancements and to go along the same path as North Korea.
I suggest the fundamental question, each person should asked themselves is "Do they acctually understand themselves and if they do, how can they relate themselves to what there are dicussing about.
Mano Bakh has the correct prediction/answer to the situation in Iran. It may not be in the U.S.A. best interest to get involved at all. And China can jump up a rope...No use for Communist's....Sorry, that may not be be politically correct. I have my own selfish reasons for distrusting China....Leave Iran to it's own internal accords. Concentrate on North Korea...Chemical weapons as well as the Nuclear issue. North Korea is helping Iran in Nuclear technology...
Someone should nuke the "holy city of Qom" and rid Iran of the old men who own the population.  All the greatness of ancient Persia was achieved before they abandoned the far better faith of Zarathustra (Zoroaster)and adopted the insanity of Islam.
No matter what you think about America or how other governments persuade their citizens to believe that we are the liars that create the global unrest, I would be willing to bet if you were to put your religious beliefs aside and live here for one year and enjoy more freedom than you can have any place else in the world, you would never want to return from where you came from.
The first post by Mr Douglas Miller is a very poignant one.  Sure, the Iranian people are allowed to vote, but they only can vote from a hand picked list.

From my vast experience, the Chinese are pretty clueless about democracy and "freedom".  They will ask you what freedoms to Americans have that the Chinese don't have.  I tell them to go on the Television and say something bad about your government.  You can't do it, it's not allowed.  China still has the left over mentality of a third world country, which in many respects it still is.

vr, Xei
Well, Mr. Bakh, I hope that you are right, sir.  I'm going to copy your prognostication and I'll be sure to acknowledge your correct prediction if it indeed comes to pass.  Let us hope.  :)
Lenin said that "religion is the opiate of the people."  So his answer was another type of religion called communism.  As Shakespeare said "A turd by any other name is still a turd."  Whether it be Khamenei's theocracy or China's communism it still means "CENSORSHIP" and that is the greatest of obsenities.
Give it up TJC FRemont Calif...it happens!  Enough of the "world peace"  It's not going to happen so put your effort into something productive
What is happening in Iran today is a continuation of events which began with the fall of the Shah in the early 80's.

The Iranian people like many others before them (Russia, Cuba, etc.), have come to realize that revolutions are only the first step.  They are not a final solution particularly when you trade one dictator for another.

As a result the revolution has become a slow moving evolution, and the end result may take a while longer to realize.

Rest assured a different future is coming for this country with enormous potential and a huge well educated middle class.

NOTE:  Many of those now entering power were educated compliments of a democratic west.  Finally, the next generation has been enlightened  by events via the internet.

Momentum has shifted once again, and it will be more difficult than ever to stop what has already begun!

It's great for all the voices to be heard and to be able to just speak ones mind.  As people become more educated and travel the world and see that there are other and better way to live and have freedom, justice, and the right to voice their opionion. When one doesn't have these rights or have to speak their mind in secret and have their Phones, and communications interupted by their government as did China, as Iran Does, than educated people know there is a hidden agenda that someone wants to hide and not let the people voice their rightful concern and freedoms that truly freely elected countries allow.
I am so happy I live in America. Say what you want about our shortcomings, that is your right. I thank God every day I am an American. Everyday!!!!
What you expect from other young and smaller democracies?! Do we forget US rigged elections in year 2000 ?! Truth of fraudulant rigged elections in year 2000 deserve nothing but shame to so called one of the largest democracies in the world.
Get rid of religious doctrine and have freedom. People of Islamic States are going to have to stop being led around by these fanatics.  They will have to eventually take a stance of government by the people, for the people and of the people or always be run by a dictator like they have now: the clerics are only out for themselves.
I disagree with TJC.  To me this is reminessant of the marches of the 60s when people of all backgrounds walked in opposition to our own coutries governmental crackdown on the black population.  People of all races stood together with the black community demanding that our country acknowledge the rights of all individuals regardles of race.  It's even more special today because of Juneteenth.  BTW, I'm not a black man.  I'm a jew who married a nice hispanic girl and have a wonderful marriage over 18 years.  I've spent my life around the world defending my county.  I've always looked for the best in all places I go and have made freinds in every culture, including moslem nations.  Give these people the chance to make a change for the better.  If they can get their government to listen.  That is always a step forward.  If the Iranian government cracks down to destroy this peaceful demonstration, the people will rise up and so will the rest of the world.
Time for us to be more hopeful and less pragmatic.
People will never change. Given a chance to oppress others, we will do it, yet in front of a camera, we will be saints. Enough trying to change people, instead, change the system and ensure everyone who breaks it is punished accordingly.
Seriously if the Chinese want to rebel. They would have. As a a chinese person born and raised in Canada who ahs been to china many times, i know it well. Most people are happy with the way China is becoming more powerful. In general life is improving for most Chinese citizens. When this double digit growth stops, people will become more discontent and may rebel. The stuff that western media records are the protests involving 5,000 people or the 4 main dissenters. Out of a population of 1.3 Billion People they are the minority. If you look at what is happening in Vancouver, Canada where they are kicking the poor out of their houses to make way for the Olympic Village. (the original plan was to provide low income housing after the olympics, but that has been scratched due to costs) I didn't know about this. The canadian media never reports on the multiple protests that happen in Vancouver. I only found out about this by searching the Internet. I would say the Canadian Media and the American Media are just as biased and patriotic about their country as China is. The Western Media is focusing on every minor event that shows disent among the population when really if you check out the population the number of protesters are really small. The vast majority of people are happy with the Current China. Chinese youth are not being brainwashed (i've gone to school there). And today's China is much better than the situation China was in in the 1960s, 1910-49 and during the Opium War).
I just don't understand the madness.  Why do so many leaders want control of the minds of their people?  Religious or not, it is just sick to want that kind of control.  My heart goes out to those people who will never be allowed to achieve all that they are capable of achieving because of leaders who are quite obviously cowards.  They always want to blame the U.S. for their problems.  They are like children blaming someone else for the trouble that they have caused.  I agree with Obama in saying that we need to stay out of this.  Yes, it is troubling but if the people want change let them bring it about.  We do not need to police the world.  We need to get this country straightened out first.  President Obama said what needed to be said while in Cairo.  I had several friends in college from Iran during the 70s.  They were wonderful people who loved our way of life.  They dreaded the thought of returning to Iran.  The only reason that they wanted to return was to visit their parents who were telling them never to return.  Thank God that we can vote in and out who we please.  Too bad that the people of Iran have to deal with someone like Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who has ULTIMATE power and someone like Ahmadinejad who is ready to cut off the hands of those responsible for the downfall of their economy.  WOW!!
I'ts only a matter of time, before someone "jumps the gun", and the Fourth of July become's a World Wide "FireWorks" Event. Marshmallows anyone?
As Nations are having a harder time, from the global
troubles ,even of Nature, much is peoples cause.

and peoples of nations ,have continued Disputes ,at many places, from throughout history.

this does not help ,people , Nations, or Our World.

What Could help Our Largest of Countries   ,of Nations, to help, or put pressure upon  some places, of Major discontent,  of smaller Nations ?

How Many nations  , could get along, with each other?

When this  all ends ,,will there be people left ?

good Luck ,

The World's People are ALL Americans. Being American is NOT about being a person under the control of a Seat of Power called the United States - which is a corporation that handles the Rights and Safety Affairs of the 50 states of the Union. Being American is about the Right To Life, The Right to Freedom of Speech, The Right to Your Life's God or Diety, The Right to Bare Arms Against Those Who Are Trying To Kill You, The Right to Be A Woman with Rights Equal to Men, The Right to Be A Woman living WITHOUT Fear of being Raped everyday or beaten like a dog. Being American is a "State of Mind"...Not a place of dirt to be and live on. Anyone who believes in their Right to Life and the other Rights mentioned above - They are Americans and ALL Americans will stand with them. Being American is to live free as a person can without causing injury to another person, place or thing. Being American is about personal sacrifice for others to have the Rights to Live their Life as They see fit. As one of the most important men and defenders of the revolution Nathan Hale said -- "GIVE ME LIFE OR GIVE ME DEATH!" as his Last Words Spoken before the bloody British hang him. That is being American and Nathan Hale was a lieutenant in the Continental Army. In his early twenties, Hale had worked as a schoolteacher before the Revolution. In the Continental Army he was one of America's First Hero's who brought the Spirit of America to the World for Everyone!
Fear and oppression only creates poverty. Governments that choose to isolate themselves from free democracy "the peoples choice" have a greater populace that live in less than desirable conditions always wondering when they will be able to feed the futures with innovative thinking. there is nothing innovative about possessing nuclear weapons.
Ayatollah is behind the scenes and he favored Ahmadinejad before he became president. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is not qualified to be an ayatollah. Obviously, devil put him to be an evil ayatollah with his actions speak louder than words.  He is not a true ayatollah.  Also, obviously, allah never have him qualified and he is not Allah nor not a fan of Koran, but all of himself.
world peace, wake up, iran exports terror all over the world, you think that is good for world peace.  grow a backbone, and stand up for what is right.  fighting hitler was not good for world peace, but the british, and then the usa stopped him, so you do not have to speak german today.   unfortunately, much of the world is populated by jellyfish.
I like how this article contains text relating to a debate in an online chatroom full of uneducated fools making asinine comments.
I do believe there will be a solution for all the affairs. As "TJC Fremont Calif" mentioned, we should stop this madness. A peaceful and joint world is good for all human beings. Why we always provoke wars because of several single persons? Should we always follws a person who declares his or her own aim as a public affair? Bless the world!
Isn't it funny how the close minded always view themselves as the open minded; or how the brainwashed see themselves as the enlightened....

"Isn’t it the same with America? They brainwash their people and shift people’s attention with the war in Iraq"

This comment is all to true and yet if someone asked me on a scale of 1 to 10 how bad this guy was brainwashed 1 being < 10 I would say he was in the 9's

or this guy
"It doesn’t matter who is the next Iranian president, hardliners or reformers! As long as they keep confronting the U.S., we should support them!"

This person doesn't seem to realize he is activly encouraging the same behavior he seems to be condeming the U.S. for.

The problem in my opinion is that people tend to see things in black and white. They set themselves in their ways and never bend until they break.... I encourage everyone to take time out once and a while and look at things from a perspective opposite of their own.

Everyone is brainwashed in more than one way. No one is perfect.... U.S. forien pollicy doesn't even reflect the views of the party who ellected the president half the time. It mostly reflects the whims and desires of the poloticians and is encouraged by interest groups(media conglamorations not excluded :) )

Nothing is ever so simple as GO CHINA!!!! we rock and have excelent civil rights!!!!!! or yeah go US we know everything and should tell everyone what to do. Its all shades of greY

Iran is a boiling pot ready to explod why can't they be simple working for the world peace this is what a true, honest politic and religion is all about
That's right TJC.  Iranians should accept the Supreme Leader in the name of peace.  You are the one who's mad.
we  the "WORLD" rights for HUMANS FREEDOMS Pick choice of elections whom has right to speak out and let IRANS females walk out of the closet door and speak for freedoms..We THE "WORLD"..peace and freedoms we can tavel around and enjoy worlds freedoms..    Michael
This is in response to Mano Bakh. I watched his interviews on the website excapingislam.com and was surprised that just because there are some mullahs (he talks about) misleading people about Islam he has decided to completely give up on the religion of his mother. From a rational perspective I would expect hime to show love for his mother by keeping the true Islam in his life as she taught him rather than be a reactionary and go aginst the faith and beleif and teachings of his mother. He is 72 years old(at the time of inetrview) and has still plenty of time to go back and listen to the original message of his mother and accept the true teaching Islam to establish direct realtion with God without human interference, middle men in between.
