Iran to media: no cameras allowed

How are you covering the story?
The journalists who had visas to cover the elections have now been told that they have to leave the country. And the journalists who have permanent press cards here, such as myself, have been told that we are absolutely not allowed to film in the streets, that it is prohibited.

VIDEO: NBC's Ali Arouzi reports on the ongoing demonstrations in Iran

The Ministry of Islamic Guidance, which looks after the foreign press here, issued these new rules, saying that these demands have come from above.

But we were out today, walking in the streets, without a camera. We were out and we were just observing what was going on.

How are Iranian officials restricting reporting?

They have essentially cut off all communication. All mobile phones have been cut off. Text messaging is gone. Internet has become very sporadic – sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. None of these things work.

When we went out in the streets on Tuesday, we couldn’t call in to do a phone interview because the mobile phones have been cut off.

In terms of doing live reports, the Ministry of Islamic Guidance has given us permission to report from inside our office and appear on television from there. But we are not allowed to do any filming outside. No photographs, no video cameras, no mobile phone footage.

There are still tons of students outside using their mobile phone cameras. Several days ago they were able to send images via the Internet, but I don’t know if they can right now. That’s why we are seeing so few images coming out of here, and I think we’ll see even fewer in the days ahead.

How is the government enforcing the rules restricting reporting?
If security forces see someone with a camera outside, they will be arrested within a second. The government has made it very clear that it is illegal right now to film outside. And there are huge numbers of plainclothes security forces on the streets to enforce the rules.

Why were the cell phones one of the first things cut off by the government?
The cell phones have been cut off because they were a tool that the demonstrators were using to communicate with each other and organize rallies and protests – especially by text messaging. Text messaging was the most powerful tool used by the protesters to organize rallies and keep people in the loop about what’s going on where.

But text messaging has been completely cut off for about five or six days now. Mobile phone reception keeps coming in and out. Whenever the mobiles get cut off totally like this, it’s an indication that the government here is worried about a lot of unrest.

One of the important things to note though is that these rallies that are going on now are being organized via word of mouth. Everybody at every corner will tell you – up there is this rally, down there is this rally, make sure you walk towards that place.

Word of mouth is spreading through Tehran like wildfire.

Only someone with something to hide would want this type of censorship. I hope the people of Iran continue to voice their opinions and their god given right to seek better for themselves.

Iranian people know that the will of the entire world is on your side.
Good luck.
No Camera so the government does not have to defend its action. Well, let's face it the time has come for the supreme leader (Ayatollah Khamenei) and president Dr. Ahmadinejad to step down peacefully in order to avoid any further bloodshed. For 30 years Islamic Republic of Iran has been picking up the nominees from the ballot boxes. Who do you think is in charge of monitoring a fair elections in Iran when the Fox guarding the henhouse? What is funny this time however is that the supreme leader filtered all candidates except four of them, whom all have served under this regime and are proven to be royal to the supreme leader. The problem is within the Islamic Republic of Iran, they are so divided that they could not even accept Mr. Mousavi to be elected (their own nominee)!!! A day before election and during the election the Iranian government had no choice other than to stop SMS, e-mail, site access, including foreign media reporting in order to tamper the ballots. They managed to counts over 40 million paper ballots in less than 4.5 hours!!! In fact they announce the possibility of Dr. Ahamadinejad re-election within two hours. Those who have voted for Mousavi knew in advance that the government will pull Dr. Ahmadinejad once more from the box regardless of casted votes.
Now, after 30 years of deception by Iranian government, people are looking for a any excuse to show their anger and frustration! The reality is that, these demonstrations will never stop even if the Ayatollah Khamenei agrees and admit that a fraud has occurred (that is unlikely), or Mr. Mousavi is elected as a president in a new referendum. Remembber Mr. Mousavi’s election is nothing but another selection by Ayatollah Khamenei as well.
It is up to Ayatollah Khamenei not to let his vilayat-e-faqih turns into vilayat-e-vaqih. Otherwise, I am sure Iranian will take this opportunity to abolish the vilayat-e-faqih, so the elections will never, ever turns into selections by the supreme leader.
Now that's a great Government. Yea right! How in the world would anyone ever think the election was fair. And the authorities blocking internet, cell phones, etc prove by doing that it rigged.
Wow! I can't believe how much control a government can have on it's nation!
Successful revolutions have happened long before the Internet or text messaging. You can't stop water from flowing!
The tighter the government of Iran keeps its foot on the kettle, the greater the steam will build. There has to be an explosion. It is inevitable.
Iran's "democratic" government is a joke. No citizen has complete freedom like in western countries. No phones, no Internet, no cameras, this is a complete dictatorship run by misguided if not evil religious leaders. It's very sad.
The NBC reporter sounds almost stunned that the Islamo-fascist dictatorship in Iran would censor the press and crush freedom of speech. Maybe he's getting a taste of the kind of abuse the Persian people are subjected to on a daily basis. Just maybe he will understand that the despots who cut off cell phones and block internet access are the same guys who export terrorism, who support the killing of American troops in Iraq and who are racing to acquire nukes to threaten and possibly incinerate other nations. Maybe now you'll ask the tough question: If the radical Islamic regime is killing peaceful Iranian/ Moslem protesters, what will they do to the rest of us?
Is this what we can expect if Obama feels threatened?  Watch what happens to our freedom of speech, they are already trying to squelch it on the radio.  Which of our freedoms or rights will be next.
after 30 years finally people are awake and i hope they will continue
Time for the Supreme Leader to go.  Freedom and a religious Dictator do not go together.
I think we should have Scalia and the US Supreme Court decide this one, as we did a great job on this in our own election.  Look what a great President we had for 8 years.......NOT!!!!!!!!!
wow..blocking communications access does not help. What do US foreign policy stands on this?
I'm an Iraninan Young. we prisoned by regim . cell phone, sms is dissconect in tehran.news channels have prasite, internet speed decreased(becouse thay dont want we send to www newest reports, they dont want we call with together). only, last day 8 youngs killed by regim :( . we dident choose ahmadi nezhad. we want democracy and we tired of dictatory regim. can u hear me world
I can't believe the government actually thinks the world doesn't think the election was rigged.  With millions of people in Iran voting and all done by paper ballots - nothing computerized - people were still voting at 10pm and within 3-4 hrs. after that, they anounced a winner. Yeah, not rigged at all!
Makes you wonder what our founding fathers would have included in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights with today's technology. I think along with "press" and "bear arms" would be "internet" and "cell phones".
Communication and resistance to power being key ideals.
You know what this reminds me of? When the police in New York City wouldn't let me take photos of the demonstrations outside the Republican National Convention.  Maybe we should look at our own country and how our police treat its citizens before we discuss what other countries are doing.
that is not goverment control it is Islamic control.
It is 1952 again when the CIA staged demonstrations &overthrew the democratically elected government of mohammad mossadak & installed the shah .
Now the agents of the Anglo-Judo-American Empire , the morons(who think that there is freedom & democracy in America,we are ruled by the American ruling mafia :some rich, some politicians'&some jews), & homos(who want to marry each other) in Iran are trying to null the elections .
Ahmadinejad is the only muslim leader who is not an agent to the Anglo-judo-American Empire.
I am Muslim Arab American , president Ahmadinejad speaks for me , more than preident Jew-bama(owned by the jews, run by the jews for the jews)does.
His cheif of staff served in the Israeli army, his tax cheat secretary of the treasury giving  the jew banks & stock brokers $ billions that they do not need .
There are more jews in the obama administration than there are jews in the Israeli kenesset.
The first action his jew U.N.rep. did is issue an indictment for the sudanese president . Why does'nt she implement the U.N. resolution against Israel that has been sitting there since 1967 .
The master of deceit  barak Ehud Obama (not Hussein)
goes to cairo & give a good dose of opium speech .
Why does'nt he stop his attack killing innocent civillians in afganistan , or bring in Islamic banks to compete for business in America to benefit the people , or release the muslim peopl's charity money frozen in american banks
But he is a black dick living in a white house , he leans toward his dick cheney's genes .he is as heartless as dick cheney & more decetful than bush .

I hope the people of Iran don't give up, and get freedom, which all people deserve. What they have now is a joke for goverment. Dictatorship/puppet President/control over it's people.
Look Iran needs to fix it's own troubles.
They have made claims they everyone in IRAN is happy with things they way they are... But this proves they aren't.  In fact this was the only way the people of Iran could complain about anything without getting hit up side the head with the back of an AH-47.  Now it's on.  The government is going to make a bunch of people dissapear.  Just like the Nazi's did.

It's sad but the truth is the people of Iran need to step up and fight for their rights.  But I don't think that's going to happen.  Both guys running for president are stooges for the real power.  The religious leaders are getting unhappy that saying god says so isn't as powerfull as it once was.  They are not happy about having to care about what the people want.

For it to get better it has to get a lot worse.  Sadly many people would have to be hurt and many would have to loose their lives.

I'm not saying people should do that but it's what every opressed group has had to do.

My prayers go out to the the reguar folks caught up in this.
Oh, SHUT UP, Keith Marlowe!  I'm a democrat too, but you're the kind of liberal I'm ashamed of.  If you truly, TRULY think that the way our police and legislative enforcement agencies work is in ANY way similar to the Revolutionary Guard and the Ayatollah's ironclad grip, get the hell out of my country.  The Republicans aren't the reincarnation of the Nazis, and they're not distant cousins of the Ayatollah!  Oh my God... I wish I could punch limp-minded insipid fools like you in the face.
Keith you are a complete moron. Please move to Tehran where you need to be. Our police are heroes. You are a moron. Police=heroes You=Moron. Free speech has its problems when it lets idiots like you talk.

I am truly amazed that you would compare the atrocities of what is going on in Iran with the RNC. Idiot.
This has nothing to do with U.S. foreign policy; in fact, the best U.S. response is no response at all. The Iranian people have this situation well under control, and the news is already out. It will keep coming out as things go on. For those who want the U.S. to do something in Iran, answer this question: Our own government here in America is broken; what in the world makes us think we can fix someone else's?
To All Iranian's seeking their democratic rights and freedoms, we in America support you. Achieving these rights and freedoms is your choice and your choice ONLY. Hopefully your religious beliefs can guide you to a more stable and equitable lifestyle within your country and the World community. The World wishes you only Positive results in the pursuit of this goal; for You and your generations to follow.
I'm sorry Keith, but the amount of freedom (other than the one you emphasized) you have in the U.S. is NEVER comparable with the one we're experiencing on a daily basis here in Iran. What if you and your family were here for a short visit? Why not give it a try? Have you ever witnessed many opposition members being executed in your country? Have you ever been beaten for being handsome and shaved, since they think you've come to the street to deceive a girl and make friends with her? Are you hearing daily lies by your leaders on TV saying those who protest are only a small group of vandals and hooligans? Have you been thrown out of the university just because you wore cool and casual to the campus and refused to change them the next day since you didn't have enough money to replace them with another set of clothes? ... Haven't you? ... But I have!
Iran is simply one of several countries in the world that uses actual or virtual strategies to imprison its people.  While hopeful are the attempts to regain popular control, the theocracy's power is nearly complete, and its ability to destroy people and their liberating ideas is evident.  Even minor excursions toward a freer society incite governmental paranoia.
The terorism regim kills peaple,no differnce where, street, poletical prisons, universities and...
the regim fears from peaple so much becuse just themselves actually know what they do with peaple in this 30 years.they steal iranian peaple money and give it to terorisem groups in other country and peaple in iran become poorer and poorer day by  day.the young peaple have no future and no hope for their future.everything is black in iran.now the regim is tring to remove the satelight dishes from the houses so that peaple cant track the news just the lies that they say from regimes chanels.we ,iranian peaple need to international help, because undoubtedfully they will kill a lot of peaple.please please hear our voice
ON THE OTHER HAND, with a total of 35 million votes in 45000 polling stations(http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2009/jun/12/iran-middleeast), it is not inconceivable the votes could be counted within 3-4 hours even by hand. The average number per polling station is about 778 votes! With the initial 20 million votes counted, Ahmadinejad had over 66 percent(announced in the famous 2 hours)and finished with 62 percent. I expected him to win since unlike many he is not a thief and is a true patriot and his Holocaust remarks notwithstanding, he has almost done as much work for Iran in the past four years as did Reza shah(metaphorically). Iranians couldn't believe themselves sending satellites into orbit or be able to avert a certain US/Israel attack. Most importantly he reached out to the US for dialog, something no reformist could possibly do in Iran since he had the support of all institutions. Also he inherited the bad economy for which he is being blamed. This crisis seems to be an internal coup attempt by the "corruption front" against him by utilizing the popular frustration with the whole system along with typical Iranian conspiracy theory-mentality as well as mob psychology. It is a dangerous game of fire these guys are playing. If the top blows, they'll be the first ones to burn.
Substitute Israel for Iran, same result. Think the recent Israeli media blackout of the rape of the Palestinians, not to mention Lebanon. I'm with Keith. This country needs real journalists, not MSM whores.
Evil will continue to reign in Iran and in many other places in the world. This is the sign of the times. The cup is full and the Day of the Lord is coming. The Day of Reckoning is near. Jesus is the one coming back to rule and to judge. Not any one else.
"... Give Me Liberty or Give me Death."
Keep fighting until you win!!!
Then you shall gain freedom!
We in USA do hear you.

We are listening. Don't give up..
Amazing what they can do and what not.. they dont want the world to know how the iranian govt cheats with its election. I feel bad for the people..DEF NOT FAIR.
It's a disgrace that Obama hasn't come out in support of the Iranian people demand for honest representation. His relationship with ACORN shows his proclivity for such "managed" elections!
"Wow! I can't believe how much control a government can have on it's nation!"

Yea that's a religious government for ya... need I say more?  Ok I will.. Can you see us here in twenty five years if the repubs got everything they wished for?

IRAN TO MEDIA: NO CAMERAS ALLOWED
MEDIA TO IRAN: FREEDOM WILL OVERCOME

To all oppressive governments around the world: Are you next?  Are your people tired of you?  Poor North Koreans are so starved they couldn't put up a resistance if they wanted to..
To Escondido and others.  It's called diplomacy for a reason. The US president is in a difficult position.  Supposing he comes out strongly in favor of the opposition in Iran and the end result of all that is going just now is that Ahmadinijad remains the president.  We're still stuck dealing with him  and the words of opposition support Obama would have said can't be taken back.  Ahmadinijad feels slighted or even very angry at our interference and he makes things more difficult than they already are considering his proclivity for playing around with nuclear power.  Where does that leave us?  It's a dangerous world out there and one must be careful that the bull doesn't come back and try to gore us.
At the moment, Iran is working on its own destiny and the world is watching.  We don't need to be "911" for the rest of the world to call on.  Charity begins at home.  We went into Iraq and shouldn't have; we should have learned from that mistake.
Go young people, Go !!!! Kick their butts and bring in real, transparent democracy. Then be prepared to kick out the new democracy leaders because power always corrupts when you don't hold your leaders accountable. Eventualy.... the 2nd or 3rd round of democraticaly elected officials will figure it out and that is that they have to represent the will of the majority of their citizens. That is true democracy and the youth of Iran CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. Do not give up!!!!! David from Atlanta Georgia, USA.
Kate..... and Escondido, believe you me when I say, the CIA is partying down right now in good old Iran. The President obviously can't woooooo the clerics, so why try and Kate is correct, he can't paint himself in a corner but again... what an incredible friend the youth of Iran have in the CIA.
Why we all have an opinion about the election in Iran, change in that country will only come from within. However, if the government reacts to demonstrations by killing the protesters, will we act differently simply because they are an islamic state? We watched the massacres in Tiananmen Square, and that didn't stop Americans from buying chinese goods or the American government from trading with China. Our country always acts in its own interest, not the interest of others, so why I sympathize with the Iranian people, I know they will have to control their own destiny. I only pray it won't cost anymore lives on either side.
Kudos to Keith Marlowe! People here in the USA don't like to hear about how we suppress free speech, or how close we came to a police state in the name of 'homeland security' under W & the Republicans.  But those of us living and working in Manhattan back in 2004 know what it was like to live under massive police surveillance and the threat of illegal arrest during the RNC Convention.  Mayor Bloomberg will never be able to live that down.
The opposition that is going on right now in Iran is too big to be stopped. Remember what happened to President Marcos of the Philippines, it's the "PEOPLE POWER" that brought him down!  Here's to Mr. Ahmadinijad " I think this is your downfall"!
I support irian people that want freedom . Fall down dictator
My Friednds, thanks alot for your comments.I should say somthing about Iran to sombody that haven't information about history of Iran. Iran have big culture. since 30 years ago Iran had King and Iranian people were free. until Mullah(religionist)decided to change regim.after that Dictarory regim started. you shold know Iranian people like American People and we havent any problem with U.S.A . we like Americans and Other Countries People. but Iranian governmetns are IRANs enemy. they made Hizbullah and Hemas in Libanon and Palestain. they want distroy world.they hate of other religion.they say all world should be MUSLIM. they are killer. they kill we if we say we hate of islamic regim. but we try to reech FREEDOM.
You dont know what freedom is america.

homeland security, patriotic act and rigged elections as you sit by with your tv dinner.
This is a message for HASSAN ELSAYED,QUINCY,MASS who commented about the issues in my brave country I would suggest you keep yourself busy with the issues in your country and you are telling the whole world that you  support Ahmadinejad who is a murderer and killed so many people when the revolution happened and also now, a monster who doesn't care about any one except himself, always use Islam as an escape and explaining his savage behaviour with Islamic stories from thousands of years ago using Arabic words which Persians wouldn't even understand.   I don't understand how you can proudly say a murderer is speaking for you Well I suppose you understand what he says in his speeches because he uses mostly Arabic words and if you have so much issues with Mr Obama or Jews why don't you go back to your own country or even better Iran and Ahmadinejad might even have a job for you.  I suggest you also seek professional help.  We are Persian and do not believe in Islam and this religion was  forced on us thousands of years ago, we can make our peace with that but we will not allow this religion rule our great country and we will fight until that day come.
