Mattress - and a million - to the dump

TEL AVIV – She sounded subdued on the phone, sad even, and who wouldn’t be? All she had wanted was to give a nice surprise to her mother.

So Anat (not her real name), a Tel Aviv resident, threw out her mother’s ratty old mattress and bought her a lovely new one. After all, as people age, they need a firm mattress, not a lumpy old one.

But those lumps were not clumps of distorted wool or loose springs. They were dollar bills. A million’s worth.

Over the years, Anat’s mother had stashed away American dollars and Israeli shekels in her mattress, and now Anat had thrown away her life savings.

In a panic Anat rushed to the garbage dump but couldn’t find the mattress among the 2,500 tons of trash that arrives daily. She rode three garbage trucks to three different dumps and combed them feverishly, looking for her mother’s fortune.

She tried to keep it a secret, fearing others would comb the trash and find it first. But a municipal worker took a photo of her sifting through the smelly debris and sold it to a newspaper, even while he expressed doubt that there could really be a million dollars in one mattress.

But Anat’s panic was genuine enough. A radio station broadcast Anat’s disaster and pretty soon there were reports of concerned citizens storming the dumps trying to help her, or at least, help themselves to her money.

The garbage dump manager said his men were trying to help her, and added that she seemed desperate.

But newspapers quoted Anat as saying, "People have to take everything in proportion and thank God for the good and the bad."

you know sometimes surprise isnt all that great communication is.
A lesson learned. If she is able to find her life savings; pehaps a direct trip to the bank would be to her benifit. At least, the amount would be insured and over time, she would be able to earn interest to help offset any inflation. This is something, not even, an old mattress can provide.
Oh well, when President Obama and the Democrats are through trashing the American dollar she will have lost nothing at all!  At least she has a new mattress.
What if Anat took the mattress, somehow knowing of the money, and gave the garbage men a different mattress?
Reminds me of when I threw away a 2 million dollar winning game piece from the Snicker's Candy bar NFL MVP game about 4 or 5 years ago. Opened the candy bar and ate it and the name on the inside was Jerome Bettis. Two weeks later when they announced the MVP I was shocked and lost to find out it was Jerome Bettis and I could have won 2 million dollars. That's just my luck. Really, who would ever think that could really happen to them?
In Atlanta GA I had a mattress sit in my front yard for a week trying to get the garbage to pick up even after paying the extra $25.00 for dumping.  See paid a million!!!!!!
someone needed a mattres and did not care if it was lumpy. it was probably picked up curb side by that person.  lets see how honesty plays out on this one.
One man's trash is another mans treasure!!
CRAIGS LIST-LOOKING FOR A LUMPY OLD MATRESS FROM TEL AVIV-
Sad to hear.  Now everyone will try to get their hands on it since its public.
I think the daughter took it, and is sending everyone out on a wild goose chase to keep the suspicion off of her, but hey, nowadays, I'm suspicious of everyone, and I cannot believe she would not have known where her mom kept her life savings. Regardless, it seems mom will have to kiss the cash goodbye!
Doug in Texas, go get a life. You are one pitiful person. This lady has lost her life savings and all you can think about is how Obama just may bring this country out of the mess that was created by GWB.
just be thank ful you lost your million dolaars but you still got your family and god.
oh well you must take the good with the bad, Good is having that $$ and not doing anything with it, Bad is having that $$ and not doing anything with it.One word for you BANK
Have faith, your money will return to you, just see, await it, believe it, it shall appear
Considering the fact that economy sucks, even in Israel, and the dollar is becoming worthless, she should be sad losing the old mattress that is probably worth more than the dollar inside.

I feel bad for this lady and her mom. Just one thing did she find the money. The news didn't say. I hope they did find the money.
Man...been there done that, try to do a good thing and all it did was create something that, through my "good Samaritan"...act made me feel at fault...ironic!
Hum maybe just maybe the people that delivered the bed have it!!
Seems really Stange that whoever replaced it would have not noticed that the lumps moved and That amount of paper is a lot heaver than u think..!Considering that forshure it was not in large bills..!(Which makes it! Who-knows? how much paper and the size of bills) Excuse me something is really fishy with this story!!Smelling more like (I) caught the big one story ect...!
I'm sorry that this lady's misfortune makes me laugh so much, but does anyone else realize that this is exactly an episode of Spongebob Squarepants???  Spongebob buys his boss, Mr. Krabs, a brand new mattress after Mr. Krabs complains of not being able to sleep at night, and he throws out the old mattress with Mr. K's life savings in it...hilarity ensues while trying to recover the old mattress at the dump...I guess this is life imitating art!!!
thers a saying you never know who you work for
1) why didn't the mother realise until she woke up?
2) wouldn't a mattress filled with million be extraordinary heavy?
There are more billionaires in Tel Aviv than anywhere else in the world. And we send them 3-5 Billion Dollars a year in Foregin Aid. Go figure.
How did Anat know that there was one million dollar in the matress if she had not counted them before mattress disposal?
