Flattery, history and religion – keys to speech

KABUL, Afghanistan – President Obama's address in Cairo sounded even better in Arabic translation, which after all was the point.

From my hotel room in Kabul I listened to Obama’s speech as it was broadcast on the Arabic-language network Al-Jazeera.  Often accused in Washington and by U.S. military commanders of having an anti-American bias, Al-Jazeera dedicated "special events" coverage to the Cairo speech.  The network, the leading Arab broadcaster, had correspondents posted around the world to gather reaction and ran highlights of Obama’s address in every newscast.

Its reporters described Obama’s appeal to open a new page in relations with Muslims as a possible "turning point."  The speech will be the focus of Al-Jazeera’s Friday analysis program Aktar Min Rai,  "More Than One Opinion," which is similar to NBC’s "Meet The Press."

This is a huge break from the past. Former President George Bush was Al-Jazeera’s bête noire. Yesterday, one of the network’s guests remembered Bush as "a warmonger" who spoke "in a language of blood and killing."  Another analyst compared the former president to Osama bin Laden.

"I don’t see much of a difference between Bush and Bin Laden," he said.  "Both say, ‘You are either with us or against us.’"

In contrast, Al-Jazeera described Obama’s speech as "honest," "historic" and "deeply respectful."

I suspect a main reason Obama was so well received was that he – either by design or coincidence – successfully used the tools of Arabic rhetoric: flattery, history and religion. Simply put, Obama translated well into Arabic.

On religion
The Cairo speech was peppered with religious references.  This is de rigueur in all important addresses in Arab and Muslim countries.  I lived in Cairo for four years.  Most important meetings in the Egyptian capital begin with an incantation from the Quran. Quoting the holy book, seen by the majority of Egyptians as a literal guidebook to life handed down by God, adds not only an air of importance, but divine gravitas.

But Obama didn’t just quote the Quran, he called it the "Holy Quran," as it is known in Arabic, the Koran al-Karim.  If he had not used the word "holy" and simply said "the Quran," the omission would have been offensive to many listening in Arabic.

Obama had a similar cultural and linguistic sensitivity when he discussed the "sons of Abraham," which every Egyptian knows refers collectively to Jews, Christians and Muslims, the "people of the book." To stress unity, the president talked of commonalities among the monotheistic faiths and their prophets when he said:

"Too many tears have flowed. Too much blood has been shed. All of us have a responsibility to work for the day when the mothers of Israelis and Palestinians can see their children grow up without fear; when the Holy Land of three great faiths is the place of peace that God intended it to be; when Jerusalem is a secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims, and a place for all of the children of Abraham to mingle peacefully together. As in the story of Isra, when Moses, Jesus and Mohammed – peace be upon them – joined in prayer."

The key phrase here is what may seem in English to be a throwaway line, "peace be upon them."  The four words are essential.  In Arabic, it is offensive and socially incorrect to mention a prophet by name without following it with the respectful "peace be upon him."  For religious Egyptians, to utter aloud the name of Mohammed or Jesus and not say "peace be upon him" is a form of blasphemy.

But Obama’s highlight, at least in Arabic, was his closing line, "Thank you. And may God's peace be upon you."  Speeches in the Arab world nearly all end the same way.  It went over very well.

On location
Cairo was an astute choice for this address to the Muslim world. Every country in the Middle East has unique strengths.  Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, because of their vast wealth, can often drive sensitive policy and backdoor diplomacy.  Iraq, because of its Shiite holy sites and Shiite majority, is a bridge, often broken, to Iran.  Egypt, home to the Arab world’s printing presses and movie studios, sets public opinion in the Middle East.

It was mainly out of Egyptian tabloids and magazines that the conspiracy theory that the 9/11 hijackers were Jews dispatched by the Israeli intelligence service, the Mossad, and the CIA spread across the Muslim world, a myth Obama addressed directly on Thursday.

If Obama can win over Egypt, and Thursday was a major step in that direction, he will win many hearts and minds in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Still a long way to go
But the speech was light on details. It was hopeful, but offered no new initiatives.  Simply giving a sophisticated speech isn’t enough.

Thursday, I was racing on bumpy dirt roads from Afghanistan’s Kapisa Province so I could make it back to Kabul to watch the president’s speech.  I’d spent the day with U.S. troops training Afghan police in a poor farming community. As I pulled into Kabul I was told by a source that three soldiers had been killed not far from where I’d been.

I called the commander of the American soldiers I’d just left.  Luckily his men weren’t involved in the attack. They were fine. But another American convoy – just as Obama was about to speak – had been hit by a roadside bomb in Kapisa and then ambushed with automatic rifles.

Words will not change the most violent radicals still at war with America, no matter how popular Obama may be in Cairo this week.

Amazing to see so many neo-cons hoping our Country fails, then to recognize a Democratic Presidency is saving it. Amazing how the banks are taking the money but not following thru restructuring the mortgages. Also working for failure in their own greedy way. Amazing watching Republicans holding to Party ideologies that have created this mess.
America you deserve better.
Amazing the way this Country's citizens pulled together during the '30's and 40's.
God bless the U.S.A and our President. May peace be upon them.
So here is my only question:

When will the Muslim world apologize for 9/11 or the USS Cole bombing, or the embassy bombings in Africa, or the Beirut Barrack Bombings, or the Madrid train bombings, or the London subway bombings, or any other attack perpetrated by Islamist groups?

After all, the Muslim world seeks a collective apology for U.S. misdeeds, regardless of the fact that what they deem to be foreign policy errors happened decades ago.

Fair is fair, as they say.

@ Zach, Falconer NY

I find interesting your condemnation of the religious right in America, and yet you are silent on the religious fundamentalism (i.e. adherence to the literal teachings of the Qur’an) rife in many Muslim countries, regardless of geographic location.

It may interest you to know that apostates from Islam fear for their lives in Muslim countries, whereas, say, converts from Christianity are not in fear in Western countries.

Indeed, such converts, or plain atheists, are lionized and free to speak about whatever issue comes to their mind. Such dissent and critique of religion, like Islam, is not tolerated in Muslim countries and threatened with death and imprisonment. These threats are also acted upon. I would also add that such treatment of apostates can be traced explicitly to the Prophet Muhammad commanding that all who abandon Islam must be put to the sword.

Rather interesting, is it not?
Dear Richard: All I heard yesterday was One speech cannot change peoples opinions of things. Well, I was so pleasantly surprised this morning when my co-worker who comes from Iran walked in the door. She said her Mother called her last night from Iran. Her Mother said that her Father had listened to President Obama's speech and was brought to tears. That she herself had been so moved by his references to the Holy Quran, and that she now had hope that things might move forward in the Middle East peace process. She even told my co-worker that young Iran's who make up 65 per cent of the population might just be able to defeat Ahmadinejad because Obama's speech inspired change. I am hopefully optimistic for all those who trully love God and long for peace in their hearts.
Didn't watch the speech...didnt have too...Barack Obama is an intelligent and wise leader. He and America will achieve the greatest victory ever..path to a great World peace.Conservetives are just jealous. This is a NEW WORLD ORDER and Obama is in charge.America  resumes its place as the World leader. It is happening before our very eyes..this are great days...will shall remember them.
When will the press report the obvious? As a supporter of Islam, Obama is giving approval to enslaving women, beheading gays, and stoning to death adulterers. I'd think that those things would call for impeachment. But, then again, the press would sell lots of papers and lots of advertising if Obama put American women in burkas, executed gays, and stoned adulterers. I bet the press would still love him; maybe the female reporters not so much ....
Joe, your ability to repeating the rants of talking heads is amazing.  Please educate yourself and understand the issues before you post again.
Again the liberal media has ignorred the blatantly obvious disregard for truth that Obama babbles on about in this talk.
He seems to apologize for everything at a cost to the American way of life. This is the typical liberal agenda when you cant fix something you blame others, apologize, mock others plans (only to use them later on)ad infinitum.
How does a guy that supposedly graduated from, arguably, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world have such a poor grasp on terms to distribute trillions of dollars banking execs and corporations. I like how shocked he was when the execs took the bonuses his administration authorized. What a joke and the punishment will affect aboiut 8 people the rest will all keep those bonuses for being dishonest and unethical in their business practices.
As for the speech it was a yawn festival. I don't think I've ever heard someone talk so much to effectively say nothing.
Everything Obama said in Cairo ACTUALLY needed to be said by George Bush after 9/11 standing in NY.  Instead, we went after a punk, 2-bit piker like Saddam Hussein, who not only posed no threat to us, but couldn't invade tiny Kuwait and keep it. We had no-fly zones that boxed him in. Now, we have 4,300 dead troops in Iraq alone, and more on the way.  What idiots 50% of us were back in 2000, when Bush stole the election from Al Gore.  Folks, it MATTERS who you vote for - wise up!
Katherine, Rosalie, Carmen and Arlene, I am saddened by your joy that Obama is appeasing a religious system that treats women like cattle. One million people died in the 10 year Iran/Iraq war. Perhaps they were fighting about which nation was the most peaceful? The crimes commited against women and the shiite/sunni conflict in the Islamic world pale of course in the light of Western insensitivity. The past 1300 years require them to apologize to each other and repent. Allah, by the war is the moon god, the god of war.
"But the speech was light on details. It was hopeful, but offered no new initiatives.  Simply giving a sophisticated speech isn’t enough."

It was enough to get him elected. His campaign was also light on details but it got him in the door where he was then free to disregard the few details he did offer.

I only wish he was as thoughtful and respectful with his critics at home as he is with our enemies abroad.
It seems that Muslims are the only "people of the book" he has any respect for. He doesn't seem to have any for Jews and Christians.

Arlene: I'll admire Obama's integrity when he actually shows some. It hasn't happened yet. He broke 7 campaign promises with the stimulus bill alone.
what fairyland are you people from?  I challenge everyone of you that are slobbering over Obama to name one muslim that denounced the terrorist attacks in the U.S and throughout the world. I'm waiting.
Thanks for an excellent analysis of the subtle ways President Obama demonstrated his respect and knowledge of Arab and Muslim traditions. His speech was a great beginning to a new era, one in which the U.S. earns support through its demonstration of democratic principles, starting with the way we treat other countries. Sad how badly the Repubs wish him to fail, even if it means the failure of peace efforts.
Regardless of all the speculation and comments re: Obama, I say, get back to me as the next election draws near, when you'll have the majority of answers to your concerns".
what fairyland are you people from?  I challenge everyone of you that are slobbering over Obama to name one muslim that denounced the terrorist attacks in the U.S and throughout the world. I'm waiting.
Zack - I can't stand intolerant people.
It's great to see a President who has the smarts to know in advance how he will come across in the language of his target audiance instead of ineptly insulting them with every word.  Bush managed to insult intelligent English speakers with his language not to mention intentional or otherwise insults in the target language.  It didn't look like Bush had even heard of HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE much less take it to heart.  Obama looks like he may help us win some friends in the world, or at least have a chance of it.
Wonderful words......but if you compare his campaign words with his after-election actions... you be the judge.
"peace be upon them"...God forbid that we offend the muslims....but slice and dice Christians in the USA, that's ok.....
If peace can start by offering an honest dialogue, this is a good start. Obama offers an opening for the process, let the Christians, Jews, Arabs and Muslims join hands and continue. Hate mongers, if you can not contribute please get out of the way. This is a golden opportunity for world to be at peace once and for all.
While the media is doing cartwheels and throwing kisses from the stage, please pause for a moment. President Obama may be a gifted orator but his subliminal message to Islamic extremists is one of surrender and subservience. He has given tyrants and terrorists a "get out of jail free" card. Rather than promoting peace, this blatant attempt at appeasing radical Islam will incite them to escalate their brutal war against civilization. The monsters already have, or soon will obtain, nukes. And President Obama's response has been to give them a smile and a pat on the back. When the curtain comes down on this lavish stage show, the finale will be a staggering death toll, wide spread destruction and enormous suffering around the world.
Obama delivered an excellent much which seeks to unify Muslims and Christians at large.I am hoping to seeing him in Ghana and I hope he will again dleiver an excellent speech to his African brothers and what will be his impression during a visit to our Castle.
Joe Bean . The highest unemployment rate since Reagan ( 12% ) not Carter . And the result of our mess is 26 years of Trickle down economics. Remember that ? But thanks for bringing up the economy and not saying anything about the speach. Just another day in a right wing biggot.
obama speech confirming the mistakes of the past administrations .would he put his words in to deeds to fix the middle east and israeli's , for palastinians to have they home land state .if he deed the rest of the world would be in peace and america will be prosperous , or if he just buying time like others presidents , if it is america will be down hill ,the world have changed the people is waking up the dollar will vanish from the earth.
Right on Jack!  Modern day Americans think that they can ride the fence on everything, from religion to politics.  It's the old you're OK, I'm OK, we're all OK syndrome.  Like I tell my kids, sometimes you just have to pick a side and stand up something.
Hi I wanted to say to you I am muslim and I also live in Egypt and am American Citizen. I believe you have you mislead people by saying that is blasphemy to not say "Peace be upon them/him". It isnt blasphemy rather it is simply unaccepted to not give them peace as they came to give us peace. However many of us including myself do say "Peace be upon them/him" to myself. Because in Islam it isnt what others hear or see you do it is what Allah(God) knows is in your heart and your mind at the time of mentioning their names. Please understand blasphemy is a very strong word to use when addressing something like this. Thanks and the rest of your Article was great!
To all! Every one is hard to please! Our president at present is really trying his best. REMEMBER he is trying to turn around what Bush left be hind. It's not Presedent Obama who stated our ecconomy is well and strong it was Bush! He lied (Bush) to the people of this great nation about many things. l see a very sincerness in President Obama I belive he is an honest man. WHO HONESTLY wants the best for this country.
Joe Bean, wake up Joe, it's day, take off the blinders.  I voted for Obama, I'm sorry I did, but the alternative was still an additional 4 yrs of piling on more misery to my beloved country.  I was embarassed and humiliated by President Bush.  The man could barely speak two coherent sentences in a row.  If I heard "nukular" one more time I swear to God I'd have thrown something through my television.  Joe, USING LESS GAS IS GOOD!  Do you NOT understand that every dollar we send over there is another terrorist being financed?  That it's another madras being built to teach their children hatred toward the West?  What's funny is that my 9 yr old knows better then you, listening to a little too much Rush lately?  I'll pay $1,300 additional to have a car that doesn't support people who want to kill me.  No brainer, if you have one.  Tax revenue?  Or sponsering terrorists?  Because that's the choice you're advocating.  Do you think maybe there might be an option or two you might not have explored?  Nah, probably too many thoughts at a time.....sorry, didn't mean to make you think too hard.  As far as North Korea, consider this, the Chinese aren't really stupid.  They know all too well that a nuclearized North Korea puts them potentially in harm's way should the relationship ever falter.  Do you really think Beijing is pleased with that?  They'll help in the end because it's in their long-term best interests.  What we need really need to do is play hard ball with the Chinese.
As far as lobbyists are concerned, it's old news Rush-head.  Next.  And you really are going to blame President Obama, just btw since you show NO respect for the President of the United States, for the high unemployment?  You're an ass.  Somehow I don't think being in office 3.5 months makes the economic situation his doing.  You're an ass.  Taking over private business with tax payer money, it started with President Bush you moron.  How dare you twist history and the truth.  President Bush and Henry Paulson started this whole thing by giving their friends $350,000,000 without accountability or transparency.  You ass, you started it.  That and your buddy Phil Gramm who got rid of binding regulatory issues which led to this whole fiasco.  You ass, you did this, not President Obama.  You're a mental midget.  You started the wars in Afghanistan, which was justified (but only if we had finished what we started), and Iraq, which was for 2 reasons.  1) to show that Jr. had a bigger "hammer" then his father did, and to finish the job that he perceived his father hadn't, and 2) Vice President Cheney and Karl Rove dominated President Bush in nearly every aspect of both domestic and foreign policy.  Cheney, along with Rumsfeld, fed Bush with what he wanted to hear in order to achieve the end result, which was war with Iraq.  I don't know how those 3, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld can sleep at night knowing that their failed schemes have cost the lives of thousands of Americans, and injured thousands upon thousands more, unsucessfully.  Joe, you're an ass.  You started all this and you blame President Obama for trying to clean it all up?  You're an ass.
Obama clearly promises to be the new "man for all seasons" and assuming ALL Americans extend reasonable and supportive concern for his administration as was done for Bush, perhaps he might bear that out. It's incredibly tragic that the Country (all of us) stood by Bush for 8 years inspite of his colossal failures and yet we're not willing to give a better future it's due consideration.  And for that proletariat act of faith Americans will likely reap 3rd world status....morons, all of us!!!! We couldn't figure it out!!

Dan Rathers is right, the best of the American society we all yearn for died with the greatest generation. Cheers to those few remaining that truly labor for peace and properity for all humanity and the rest of us be dammed.
Since Abraham Lincoln, whom we only know by reading that he existed and that he spoke those inspiring and challenging words, there is no other whose words and respect for cultures have calmed the world and brought such  an air of peace. Yesterday, all sober men and women were able to renew their faith in the prospect of all of us to live together in peace.
Barack Hussein Obama- peace be upon him.

And Mr. Engel ,thank you sir for your insightful reporting.
The history of the Middle East is flooded with blood and tears. The innocent as well as the gulity have paid a terriable price thur centuries of wars based on a perception of doing God or Allah's will. The president spoke of peace,a dream that has not come to a life of nightmares. This country under President Obama must be the focus point of peace, and true peace means withdrawal of U.S. military forces. These countries of the Middle East must embrace their fellow brothers and refrain from war.May peace be upon them.
good sppech by President Obama but as usual lot of religious emotional aspect to it. This will work with moslems because they are generally emotional types. However at the end of the day the day the realities will come to hit. Thats why there has to be som good plans for peace put on the table and a demonstrated action of justice and fair play is needed.
GOD'S WILL, WILL BE DONE IN PRES. OBAMA'S LIFE! IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT ANYONE THINKS! LOVE HIM OR NOT. GOD CREATED HIM FOR THIS PURPOSE!
Obama is the best thing happened to this world after so many years.Only the wise nd great people of this nation has chosen this wise nd great leader.Being a
Pakistani, i am concerned about Pakistan.Talibans were imported from all islamic countries nd trained in Pakistan to fight soviet union in Afganistan.Obama
has won hearts nd minds of millions of muslim around thr world with his well balanced speach. He condems extreemists of all religions.Obama understands the root cause of all the conflicts of today nd i am sure he will bring peace to this world.LONG LIVE OBAMA   all extreehe   c
It was typical OBAMA  all PR and nothing concrete.

Like his  "race" speech media said was so historic, chris mathews compared it to the Gettysberg address, this speech will not be remembered  1 year from now.

As an American Jew, I am very disappointed in President Obama thinking there needs to be an "even-handed" approach to the Israeli-Palestinian issue.  The World press has painted the PLO and Palestinians as "those poor people" when in fact they have been the aggressors, have hid behind children, and terrorized Israel.  The Arabs' one-note theme is to destroy Israel and throw the Jews into the sea.  Doesn't President Obama read history?  Every time the Israeli's are forced to give land for "peace" there is no peace.  Every time the Israeli's want dialogue, they are met with calls for their distruction.  every time the talk of a "two state" solution to the conflict rears its ugly head, the Israeli's must make sacrifices, i.e., call a halt to building new settlements and the Palestinians are forced to give nothing to the peace process.  But, the cogent question becomes rhetorical:  "When in the history of any battle has the victor given land back he has won on the battlefield?"  Answer:  Only Israel.  And, why is Israel called an "occupying power" and the land Israel won fair and square called the "occupied lands"?  I hope Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Neyanyahu does NOT BUCKLE to anti-Israel rhetoric coming from the secretary of state's office  in the form of Suha Arafat kissing Hillary Clinton as well as well as the White House in the form of President Obama even though he sent a world-wide message to the Holocaust deniers that the Nazi's  killed 6,000,000 Jews during WWII in his Cairo speech and met with the World's Conscience, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, at Buchenwald.
you all should read some books on Lincoln (team of rivals, giants, cry freedom), obviously this president seems to have studied him pretty well.

What they say about Obama, is exactly what use to be said about Lincoln during his time... That he was untried, inexperience, apologetic, to soft on rebels on and on...

Yet they both hired rivals, incorporating some from the opposing party in their administration and sought peace and understanding wherever they turned...

...not that anyone can hold a candle to Lincoln, but current presidents could do a lot worse then adopting his techniques...
I do not agree with some of the posters here that Barrack is creating "alienation" among our allies. I have traveled the world and know what are reputation was like during the Bush administration and it is getting better now, our reputation as Americans is on the rise. Don't let anybody else tell you different.
Hello Richard, everytime I hear one of your reports I admire you as your usually in a fairly hostile area and quite dangerous. Kabul used to be a nice town that we too have stayed in. But not now and there must be many safeguards you go through. Obamas presence alone has helped us so much already few people even realize. This is not a subjective opinion but direct observation of how he is received in places such as Kabul. Seeing is believing. Thanks again for bringing it all home to us.
Richard,
I just finished reading your second book. I started out reading it one chapter a night before I went to sleep, but by the 5th chapter, I was hooked. I stayed up Saturday reading to 3am until I finally fell asleep from exhaustion. On Sunday, I read it straight through to the end. But I feel like the story is unfinished. So much has happened since that last chapter. I hope you are working on book number three (hint, hint).

Of course Obama's speech sounded better in Arabic to Arabs and Muslims - OBAMA IS A MUSLIM!  If he says the Quaran is holy - and you can't see the truth - may God have mercy on you....
I had not looked carefully at the language of the speech, this blog raised very good points about the usage of language and cultural norms.
Important and telling is that Al-Jazeera called the speech "deeply respectful" When trying to open lines of communication, one first has to show you have more than contempt for the other party. Pres. Obama is attempting to change the tone of the dialogue by taking a step back and approaching the muslim world on their terms. To do so is not to take a subservient or weakened position as some have proposed. He is showing the wisdom of someone who understands complexities of diplomatic relations.
I am a canadian who lives and works in the US. What I find is that many americans do not seem to be aware that one of the reasons citizens of other countries have such strong negative feelings towards the US is the attitude that the american way is the only valid choice and that little exists beyond the borders of the USA. I think of this as being america-centric. To be sure, there is much great and to be proud of here. But by approaching muslims by accomodating their language and signs of respect, the president is showing that americans are aware of other cultures and that he is willing to accept their norms instead of insisting on "his way or the highway".
Thanks for the insights Richard. I appreciate your unique POV.
hola, richard, the interesting thing about the roman catholic church and the christians is that before constantine of the byzantine empire became pope, the dogma had no guts.  the apostles creed was introduced by constantine.  and islam knows that the crusades were just an estate land grab ploy by the church for all of the landed crusaders that were going to die in the conflict, totally political.  richard the lionheart was such a jerk that his mother, eleanor of aquitaine, had to pay the church big bucks when he died so that they wouldn't send his soul straight to hell.  all i look for these days is peace on my own little doorstep, a respite from the world at large.  whatever worries i have, i put those on my prayer altars.  those issues are certainly nothing that i can personally do anything about . . . . . re: korengal, why is it called 'the valley of death'?
blessings, anna martina
