Americans make difference for poor Egyptian family

CAIRO – The aisles were empty in Country Homes Furniture in Wilbraham, Mass., and owners Hazel and Nazih Zebian were sitting in their office doing what they described as the "usual whining and complaining" about how bad business had become and questioning how much longer they could last.

"Like so many people in these economic conditions, furniture has been hit hard," Hazel said. "It’s the last thing people want to buy."

Out of boredom, she began to surf the Internet and came across a story on msnbc.com about another man half a world away facing hard times: Abu Sayed in Cairo.

We reported on how Sayed had just lost his small herd of pigs, the only source of income for his extended family of 14. The Egyptian government began culling all pigs in a misguided attempt to prevent swine flu. But pig farmers, most of them living below the poverty line, lost everything when police seized their swine herds without any compensation.

Sayed was no exception. He was beaten by police when he asked what would happen to his herd.  He had no idea how he could continue to feed his own children or help provide for his brothers and sister.

But after reading Sayed’s story, Hazel silently calculated how much it would cost to replace the 25 pigs.

"I read it to my husband and as I started reading it, multiplied in my head and all it amounted to was $1,125.  I said, ‘I wish we could give that to him ourselves.’ And he said, ‘If that's what you want to do, just go ahead and do it.’"

Soon after, I received the following email from the Zebians: "I would like to know if there is any way possible I can make a financial contribution to this man and his family… I want someone to physically hand him the money on behalf of myself and my family so that he does not go without the income his pigs would have brought in for him."

A few days later, after a flurry of e-mails and a trip to Western Union, the grateful Egyptian family was given a fresh start.

"I was astounded when I found out there are people who care and are still good," Sayed said.  "They are good people. Human beings should support one another and they are a good example of that."

Sayed plans to buy a flock of sheep with the money to replace his herd of pigs. "God willing, this will replace what I have lost."

He and Nazih, a Lebanese-American, spoke briefly by phone. "I thanked him and expressed my appreciation," Sayed said. "Nazih is a respectable person and he wished me luck." Nazih said he hopes to come to Egypt and meet him in person.

By giving Sayed a second chance, the Zebians gained a fresh outlook on their own struggling business.

"After reading the article, we just thought, ‘What are we complaining about?’ and felt really good after doing it," said Hazel. "We will never forget."

This piece forced me to reflect.  God Bless both homes.
Doesn't MSNBC realize that good news like this that shows human decency is not allowed?

I'm sure you will receive all kinds of negativity saying you should be helping americans first, so I'd just like to say GOD BLESS YOU!! There's now one foreigner that will stand up and argue with anyone attacking the US..
This story is what Christianity is all about!
The world is grand. Sayed, a Muslim will no longer have to worry abut any imposition set on him from society or the government from herding pigs- although pig herding is not forbidden in Muslim religion. Now, he has a fresh start with a whole new herd and for the amount of money most people would usually spend on gathering various gadgets and knick-knacks that don't get used much anyway. Surely, Sayed will do very well!
After spending 3 weeks in Egypt a few years ago I fell in love with the people. They are kind, gentle and proud. So happy to hear such a nice story.
Blessings on this couple for being able to look beyond political, cultural or religious limitations to see the greater picture of simple human need, and for doing something about it. Whether it is for a neighbor or someone half the world away, this kind of selfless awareness of others and their condition, and the willingness to reachout, makes the world a better place. I hope all three of them thrive.
It is wonderful to see one human helping another.
I see it also on www.wishuponahero.com
This family is an example to all of us.  The article should have also mentioned that the people of the USA contribute more per capita to charities around the world than any other country.  Unfortunately governments and radicals in other countries only try to foster hate for us and others.  Maybe we as the people of the world can fix this mess..........one family, one person at a time.  Our government certainly isn't perfect.  It is time we remember we are ALL human and start making things better based on that and NOTHING else
There must be other families just like this. How did the Zebians figure out how much money he needed and find someone to give the money to him? I'd love to do the same thing but don't know where to begin.
Beautiful story--thanks for sharing.  Really gives credence to the saying:  there are angels among us.
GOD BLESS YOU BOTH FOR HELPING THIS MAN.  I TO READ HIS STORY AND MY HEART WENT OUT TO HIM AND MADE ME QUESTION WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?  YOU DID SOMETHING SO WONDERFUL AND YOU WILL BE BLESSED FOR IT. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD AND HE WORKED THROUGH YOU TO HELP THIS MAN AND HIS FAMILY.  YOU TRULY ARE AN INSPIRATION AND DOING THE LORDS WORK.
This was very heart warning to read.  The Zebians just experienced the truthfulness of Acts 20:35 "There is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving."  I hope the best for them and the rest of us in this dire economy.
Very moving indeed and refreshing to know there are good people out there. GOD bless the Zibians and best of luck with their business.
This was a great gesture but what about the folks still affected by Katrina?? The folks still living in the projects of Detroit which are one of the worse places? Why not start helping the folks here in the US????????
Simple, generous acts like this do more to spread goodwill and build bridges between different peoples than all the military and diplomatic forces of our government combined.  Let's hope this type of kindness spreads, now that we have apparently moved beyond the divisiveness and xenophobia of the past eight years.
This is the way the world should be.
It was so nice to read this article.  Especially considering the article I read before this one (Myanmar’s Suu Kyi faces new trial) described the "wretched American".  I'm afraid we Americans many times have a poor image across the globe as stupid, spoiled little rich kids.
This is the kinds of stories we need to read about. I read the original story as well and feel so glad others were moved to act. If I had been financally able to contribute I would have as well.

We moan and groan about how tough our lives are and this story really puts out situations in perspective. This gentleman was facing the most dire straits given the iron fist of the Egyptian governments uneducated decisions against Swine Flu concerns.

Thank you Mr and Mrs. Zabian for making a difference!
the world is still good.  and these people are amazing examples of how the lord works in mysterious ways.  never give up hope. god bless both families.  and god bless this world we live in.
Wouldn't it be great if more of us acted this way? It would literally change the world! I pray that the Zebian's kindness will be repaid to them a hundred times over!
Good people doing good for others. What a concept.
God Bless you for having the heart to save this family.
The earth is full of good people too. The responsibility of media and leaders are to focus on good things and show examples of results of good human behavior. The repeated attempts from all sides will certainly help to bring peaceful atmosphere and happly living in all communities. It is better not to give more focus on power and politics but focus on social problems in the society and all over the world including poverty. Take the example of our own most powerful and greatest country in the world but still we have innumerable problems i.e. drugs, family relationships etc etc. Always say NO to war in any condition anywhere.
I think what you did was a wonderful example of goodness in the world.  I am sure that it has left an indelable mark on the family of Abu Sayed.  May you both be blessed by this act of kindness all your lives!
What a blessing! More people should follow the example this couple did.
This was a very encouraging story. There is always someone worse off than yourself. God Bless these folks for their giving heart!!!!! I wish there were more like them in the world!!!
Praise the Lord! There are still good people. The word of God states to give and it shall be given to you 7 times foul. Sometimes we need to reminded that it's not all about us.
After reading this story from here at work my heart has smiled and I'm trying to hide a couple of tears of joy knowing that God (love) is alive and well.
What an amazing story.  It shows how people can make a difference not only through the gift the Zebians gave one family but also through the message it sends to others.  Diplomacy on such a small scale can still have quite an impact.
So wonderful! Just imagine how the world would be affected if everyone of us did something similar. We could change the world!
Great job Zebians! It's nice to know there are still good, generous people in the world. Too bad your story won't make any major headlines at any major news outlet because it's too nice, there's no angle, and you did it without going on Oprah first. *snark*
What a hearwarming story!  How long is it going to take us to find out that the greatest joy we have in this life is what we do for others.
There should be a way to help families directly.  So often I have paid sums of money into organizations and I guess they know what they're doing, but this?  It's obvious that it was quick and hopefully immediate relief to a family in need!

What a wonderful story. Thumbs up to the Zebians. I wish I could have done that.
There will be hope for the human race as long as there are Zebians to act and Sayeds who are grateful. The Zebians had the courage to help and Sayed, the courage to rebuild.

I hope that no one else sullies the honor of this deed and sentiment by posting negative comments.
Wow there are still good people who do good things even when they are going through things that are not so good. Sometimes when we cant even help ourselves we can still reach out and help others.
Nice to read, glad that this story had a happy ending!! It takes courage to do such a thing in these difficult economic times, the Zebians should be commended.
What a wonderful thing to happen. These people are truly the American Heroes. They deserve a medal. I only wish that other people (like the government that caused the problem) would do the same. There are many more other people out there that could use the help.  I'm glad that something good came out of a terrible thing.
This is the kind of charity worth giving. At least you know where it goes and it truely help the people who are in need. Great for you Hazel and Nazih!
This is the kind of story we should see in the news! There are good people in the world, They are doing good, they come from every walk of life, they belong to every party.

Thank you for printing this kind of news!
we (and MSNBC) need to see more stories like this...this is how God intended us to be,...humble and caring for our fellow man...not consumed with our annual bonus and 401Ks, expensive cars and afluent neighborhoods.  Great inspiration!
This is a wonderful story of inspiration. God bless the Zebian's!
People helping people thats where it's at Governments don't help people usualy they just screw things up.
What a wonderful story and thank God for people like Hazel and Nazih Zebian!
Hazel and Nazih Zebian. You are a testament to faith. There are good people in the world...no matter race,  religion or distance.  Bless you
These are the stories that should get much more attention in the media than murders, shootings, bombings, etc.  Maybe it will inspire more people to help build up this world instead of tearing it down.  Kudos to the Zebians for making a difference!
It is so wonderful to see people do something good just because they want to!  There are still many, many good people in the world and these two proved it!  Also, thank you to who ever decided to put something good in the news!!!  We need more positive news information not just the negative!  We need more news stories that lift us and less that depress us!
And they did it all without any influence from the government. You see...  People can redistribute their wealth on their own.  They don't need the government to do it for them...
