Civilians caught in the crossfire in Pakistan

MARDAN, Pakistan – Shaista, a terrified 11-year-old girl from the Swat Valley, was lying in a hospital bed in Mardan’s ill-equipped health center on Friday.

She suffered severe injuries to her legs when an artillery shell, reportedly fired by Pakistani troops, hit her family’s small house Thursday night in Mingora.

The traumatized Shaista said the mortar shell struck a room where she was sleeping. Her voice choking, Shaista said her mother, two sisters and brother were killed in the incident – and then she became lost in deep despair.

Shaista, 11, in her hospital bed in Marden.

A doctor treating the girl said she seems to lose her memory when speaking and starts to suddenly cry – apparently because of deep shock she suffered.

Children have proved to be some of the hardest-hit victims among the estimated 1 million people displaced by the ongoing fighting between Pakistan’s armed forces and Taliban militants in the northern districts of Buner and Swat.

Shaista said her father was worried about her family’s safety after the Pakistani military launched its operation against the Taliban in Swat and went to locate a house in a safer area for them to go to.

"He went to Dargai town on Thursday and said he would shift us to a safer place on Friday," she said, but the move didn’t happen soon enough. She said her neighbors recovered the bodies of her mother, sisters and brother from the rubble of the building and then took her to the hospital in the morning.

Ahmad Yar, a villager from Daggar who was taking care of his critically injured mother in the same ward of the hospital, said he had decided to take Shaista to his home once she is discharged. He said the neighbors who had taken her to the hospital left so that they could move their own families to a safer place.

‘We don’t know what our crime is’
In the same hospital, more than a dozen people had been admitted from Buner district with multiple injuries they received when they came under heavy artillery shelling by the security forces.

Pakhtun Qamar, 12, was injured by an artillery shell in the Swat Valley. Doctors in the Marden hospital operated on his legs and had to amputate several of his fingers.

"We don’t know what our crime is that our own armed forces are targeting us. On one hand the government is asking us to vacate our houses and on the other they imposed curfew and blocked all roads in Buner," complained Sher Badshah, who came from the village of Suwarai. He said thousands of people are still trapped in Buner who cannot come out due to a government imposed curfew and the blockade of roads.

Badshah complained that he was taking his family to the apparent safety of Mardan when an artillery shell hit one of the trucks, killing five members of his family and injuring three others, including his aged father.

"Now tell me what crime this aged person had committed," his angry son asked.

He alleged that instead of eliminating Taliban militants, the troops have been targeting innocent people who wanted to flee for safer places.

He claimed several people who were moving to safer places via the mountains had been killed by indiscriminate military artillery shelling and their bodies were still lying there.

‘I don’t know what kind of people these Taliban are’

Shams-ul-Qamar’s story was no less tragic. He said he lost his eldest son in the cross-fire between Taliban and security forces.

"Qamar had just passed his matriculation examination and was looking forward to getting admission to college," he said.

But his family’s tragedy started months ago – when Pakistani troops set up a security post close to his house.

"Being a Pakhtuns, it’s our tradition to serve guests with whatever is available at home," Qamar said, referring to the tribal group in Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province. "We were poor people but tried to serve the guest soldiers sometime with milk, tea and drinking water."

However, when the troops vacated their roadside post under a peace deal that was struck between the government and the Taliban last February, militants decided to settle their score with Qamar and his family.

"They entered our home and opened fire, killing my sister Zar Bibi, my niece Farzana, my 50-year-old sister-in-law Zareena, and kidnapping my nephew on charges of taking sides and helping the Pakistan Army troops. The Taliban also took [my nephew’s] 88 model Toyota car. They later released him when he paid 100,000 rupees to the Taliban," the terrified Qamar told me and then broke into tears.

He said the government has done nothing for him since he lost four of his family members for supporting their troops.

"I don’t know what kind of people these Taliban are – Pakhtuns never target women and children," he said.

Come and spend some time with the US military here in Iraq, Afganistan, and yes, even Pakistan.  Then you will see who and what the AQ and Taliban are all about.  Until you have lived here, fought againist the AQ and Taliban, you DO NOT have the right to blame or accuse others of wrong doing.
its so sad and disturbing i have been to  sawat valley this place is bautiful like heaven people r soo welcoming and hardworking and nicest of all.i am feeling so sad and bad whats goin on with those people.taliban are not muslims they dun have to do anything with religion Islam and our impotent govt dun know how to deal with them and the only suffering is to those innocent beautiful people.and i heared that cleric in sawat used to live in USA for years?it dun make any sense to me whts goin on over there.
I lived 13 years in pakistan - if you ask me : just take away ALL power from those mullahs who are mis-using the innocence of this fantastic nice and friendly people who never got chance to study. Once all power again is in hands of normal honest Pakistani citizens with real belief in Allah and the Holy Message of Mohammad (PBH), this country is able to overcome each and every problem in a very short time !
May God bless Pakistan and its People !
This is happening in Swat from the last two years with ordinary people. Pakistani troops either have no ability to fight or delibratly not want ot kill these bandits.
My view on this is. People of Pakistan elected officials (ISI) that supports terrorism against other countries. So whats happening is the fruit of what they have sowed for years. For years they have harbored, trained and equipped terorrists to do the same on others, so its pay back time.
I know that the victims described above where not the actual supporters but when terorrist strike, they do not differentiate between innocent and guilty.
Take it easy the ball has just landed in pakistan's court for the first time. I am interested in finding out how does their elected terrorists, sorry I mean political figure feel about these cases.
The enemy will always shelter themselves in the protection of the innocent people.  Best thing to do is to deny them a haven where the peaceful reside.
American secret agencies are not interested in the elimination of taliban, surely those backward talibans cant be a threat to US. Nor they can by any chance get hold of the PAK Nuclear technology. Its all American conspiracy that PAK nuclear resources are in danger. there was peace in the region until the 9/11 attacks. And US has failed to prove that AL-Qaeda was behind that. Its just people listen to cnn and bbc and develop their views. ever try searching "9/11 an inside job". US is a bigger threat to the whole world than those Afghanis to US. Those Talibans can not attack US by taking missiles on their shoulders. Nor they can pass US borders that easily. And if they are working inside US, US should be more concerned about that.
Why children and the poor people are always the innocent victims? They deserve a bright future.
The taliban is nothing but cowards, that uses chilren and mothers as a shield. Unfortualy in war innconent people get killed. Imagine what that country would be like if they got thier hands on the nukes. I want to thank the Pakitstan Army and the government for taking control of the situation, or it could be worse the US might of been force to take matters in their own hands in their hunt for Bin lADEN The Coward.. There will be no peace as long as these terriost have a safe haven.
I donn't know what to say but mostly people here who should not be trusted by our government. Remember Sept. 11. Should American trust these people. Even
they are American Citizen. Their loyalty is doubtful?
Unfortunatly  on the whole of the affair they are also responsible of their demise the moment that they allowed the taliban maniac to settle there without asking help from the army to reject them
Sure is alwys a tragedy when yong kids are been killed or maimed  but no use to cry baby now they should have been less anty A,erica and more honest to themselves  now is to late and there will be lot more childrens killed  couse the Taliban parasites don`t give a crap if they all get killed for that matter
Take care
              +Linus+
That`s why Japanese and U.S. government donated $1 billion each, so the Pakistani puppet government could kill it`s citizens for a reason.
Not for building a hospitals, schools nor opening jobs for already impoverished nation but to kill those who already lost everything.
Obama shame on you and your promises, you deceived us very well but you are no different then the previous one.
Where is god? Where is justice? Where is truth?

None of that is relevant...money talks

Does anyone remember vietnam? This is exactly what went on then. It`s really a shame what is going on, but asymetrical warfare is a bloody, brutal, form of warfare that uses fear and terror as it`s tools.

The Taliban are no better than the NVA butchers of the 1060`s, or Pol Pot of Cambodia. You people have no idea of what the face of evil looks like. Taliban scumbags beheading people so they can ambush Pakistani police who come in to help, and using human shields is very cowardly. Take a good look, this is the face of evil, in the form of religion.
so sad to read this.  it's horrifying.  i am a mother and my heart goes to these innocent souls.  May God Bless them.  WAR NEVER SOLVES ANYTHING.
We need to learn from History. What ISLAM is doing today is exactly what CHRISTIANITY used to do before HENRY V111.Anytime a Religion becomes powerful enough to Rival and Challenge the Political Directorate then Innocent People are going to Suffer and Die.Until people are able to Conciously Separate GOD from the CHURCH.Then these Despotic Religious MEGALOMANIACS will continue to bring down DEATH and SUFFERING on Poor People the World Over.
children suffer the worst in any catastrophe....natural or man made.
Terrorism was causing this crises. United States was trying to fight these terrorist all over the world, especially in Iraq, Pakistan and Afganistan border. Alquida and its ally the taliban was doing this terrorism that was happening in Pakistan and my become a world wide problem if it was not defeated.
the" fault" that the affected people rant about goes back in history to americas obsession with driving russians out of afghanistan and trusting a cunning son of a bitch Genl Zia' pakistans then dictator. zia funnelled the arms to creating a taliban aimed at liberating indian kasmhmir primarily and helping to fight offf soviet troops only secondarily.
the soviets at that time were only doing what the world at large is now raving about " controlling islamic terrorism be it of the al quada brand or the taliban hue. now thanks to americas silly aforementioned political games and a monster has been let looose. pakistan sowed the wind in india and is now reaping the whirlwind in its own backyard,. the chicken have come home to roost. enjoy pakistanis!
Expatriate is right... Terrorism will never end until those who seek to organize it find no support.

While a few Taliban want to commit suicide the only reason these organizations thrive is because they've been brainwashed into thinking that victory is possible.  I'd love someone to ask them "What will you do if you win?" because honestly I can't imagine what a Taliban run country would be like.

We can blame the US for taking a stance, and we most assuredly can blame those in control for failures, but the media will never report the successes.

For each ravaged innocent the media brings to our attention there are thousands who are able to find some solace because someone IS fighting these terrible people.

Consider the alternative.  America doesn't intervene. No one does.  Let's just leave the terrorists be and worry about ourselves.

That Taliban is at your door... they want your money, your sons and your daughters to fight the 'western devil' that is now a fortress within its borders, protected by the largest military in the world.  You just want to have a normal life... but they aren't taking no for an answer. You'll be a great man... your sons will be heroes and your daughters will have honor... They take what they want and saying you have earned much favor with Allah.

Think for a minute... now answer me.  What do you think America should do?
It is very sad to see the plight of innocent people being killed bcause of politics of the biggest bully of the world USA.It is Pakistans own creation which is slowly bleeding it internally.
Taliban is pakistan's own child. So world should just watch how taliban destroy pakistan. This must be a good lesson to any religious fanatic country who use terrorism as a weapon against innocent countries.

Remember he song all you obamatrons chanted to.........

"He's gonna CHANGE it............, rearrange it.
obama's gonna change the WORLD".

way to go stupid america.
It is truly a tragic thing when innocents become harmed in a necessary struggle between U.S. allies and people associated with or held hostage by the Taliban.  It is my respectful view that it is more merciful to mount a full-out attack upon the Taliban with attempts to limit the casualties to innocents.  Once that is successful, then the local residents should be able to live in peace.  That's what war is!
How many civilians are there in the Swat Valley? Can these people NOT take on this "Taliban" force and dispell them? 7000 vs 1-2 Million?

The Pakistani Army should be in there protecting these people. Not standing back at 2-3 miles lobbing artillary! Maybe just Maybe then, they (civilians) could help. Until there is a ground force in there at least trying to protect them, all they do is Hide.

These Cowadous Taliban use FEAR as their greatest tool. Until the entire country gets up and stand together, this will NEVER end......
Without partition we could have been a stronger united front perhaps not within the Hindu-Muslim community but certainly against the Islamic militant forces that are now using Pakistan as a staging ground for their religious and political agendas...tragic indeed.
It is sad that it is always the innocent that always hurt the most from war. I do know however, that the USA thru the last century spent hundreds of billions (at the least) developing smart weapons to avoid civilian casualties as much as technology will allow. The taliban seem to survive only on the threat of terror. If you do anything against them you are sure to suffer. Those caught in the middle are of no consequence to them. How could anyone doubt where the voice fo goodness stands. I hope Pakistan can eliminate these thugs before it's too late.
Taliban need to be wiped out swiftly, because they have been brain washed to kill and conquer. As the Taliban were created by the US themselves to defeat the Soviets so they should help Pakistan all out in fighting them against the Taliban. Pakistan should be given more weapons to fight them and a satellite imagery of the battlefield from the US. Night vision goggles and sniper rifles would also help in decreasing the collateral damage.Indians should stay out and mind their own business by not helping the Taliban thru their intelligence agency the RAW.
The problem is that terrorist factions intermingle with civilians. Who's to blame? Certainly the terrorists, and to a great degree, the civilians who let the terrorists mingle among them.
It's terrible when innocents suffer, but let's look at all the facts.
this the real war game of america and pakistani forces against inocent muslims, they are killed because they simply ,muslims and pukhtons nothing more, but it is abvious from the wrong action of pakistani forces that  pakistan will soon divide in small parts ,what ever is the concequences the  pakhton never forget their enemy,no body can defeat them, pakistan and america knw that,so they should stop killing sannocent pakhtoons, who are vey simple and straitforward people, and iknow the pakistani forces will get reward for this, they should know that america never is the friend of any one,and later on pakistani government face same as sadam, who also helped america to occupy iraq, every muslim is terrorest for america and israel.muslims are very peaceful, but america and israel dont want islam, but it never possible to finish all the muslims, this du-istruction will rturn to them as we all people created by God and he is deciding every thing.for example who brings the desasters and who brought the globle warming the non believers should know tht and shold not kill annocent muslims.islam is ever green and no body can remove it untell dooms day,it is written in wholy quran.
i want to tell the world that the pakistani forces are lier ad they are killing annocent people, because i am from the peshawar as well so people who are migrated ,telling that mostly pakistani forces targetting annocent people in that area, one of bucher bought cows from that area and was coming to wards mardan  the pakistani forces knowing that and they fired him from the hicopter and killed him with four cows in truck.now hisreltives can not go their to take his body, because the army blocked all the roads and who is coming out from the home they directly fire on hime.people are not afraid of taliban more but they told we are migrted because our own army want to kill us not taliban .
Can agree with many , but the two comments . One catering to foreign interest, is nonsense. Problems have been there a very long time

As to random drones. Doesn't work that way. The targets are picked, and guided. The  just don't shoot one down and up it hits a target. 99.9 percent of the targets have militant.

The facts the problems of both the militants are home grown. Pakistan worried to much about India as the enemy and not the enemy from with in. They allowed fundalmentalist groups preech their hatred in the the outland, and then supplied and trained the groups to attack India, and now they are attacking the hand that fed them....
Zardari is fighting on orders of Obama and Gates.  He should have told them no more war when he came to Washington. But as another corrupt individuals he rather sell his Muslim people for some money and accept the orders just as Karzai is doing. The US has to change its policies toward the Muslims, that is the basic problems. Any one paying attention to events knows that. The American people need to tell Obama before he goes to Cairo to give a speech on US-Muslim relations in June.
I agree with Melmood's assesment esp. regarding the ISI. Raj is right on "Taliban is Pakistan's own child". And John D. makes a good point about getting the masses a little help. Those religious fanatics need to be hit hard, hit again and driven into the ground.
Mr. Raj & Mehmood Vashim some information for you:

United States drafted and funded for the creation of Talibans (Afghan Mujaheddins) during Russia/Afghan war. Zia-ul-Haq aided United States in creation of this group. CIA along with ISI recruited many illiterate young hot-headed individuals to fight with Russians. Now same group wants to turn their muzzles towards anyone who criticize them (U.S. or Pakistan); the only two who are actively saying/doing something about terrorism. No other adjoining nation is doing anything or saying anything & is not being hit with it.

ISI is Pakistan's CIA (type) which is charged to do dirty laundry; every country has, even yours too. They do what's best for their country, You and I cannot judge it without knowing all the facts.

Now remember I mention the word ILLITERACY. Yeah, that's what the problem is in that area. Yes, Pakistan had and has corrupt politicians (let me remind everyone about Mr. 10%). Even his own wife accepted it during an interview with Barbara Walter and now he became a president after assacination of his wife; come on, give me a break. He was in U.S. after becoming president to get money to supposedly fight terrorism BUT refused. He was back again last week to negotiate funds with another corrupt official Mr. Karzai. SWAT Valley is not a lawless region. It is just outside that frontier which we call tribal lands. I am wondering why is it happening now (after Zardari was refused funds)? Why Swat Valley(Middle of Islamabad & Afghan border)?

People of Pakistan are THE victims of U.S. interest (Creation of Taliban), corruption (I am PM now give me money) and illiteracy. I think we can fight everything else later if we can eliminate/decrease illiteracy first.  Is anyone with me on this one.
West is equally responsible for this war with Taliban as Pakistan soil and its people were used against Communism. So, now when Pakistan is at full fledged war against Taliban American and European should come forward to assist this poor country. Do not blame Pakistan alone. As Pakistan did not sowed alone what she is cutting now.
THIS IS JUST ONE MORE PLOT BY THE WORLD'S ELITE TO TAKE A BITE OUT OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION AND CONTINUE THEY STRANGLE HOLD ON THE MID-EAST THROUGH SHARE "TERROR" BY THEIR MANUFACTURED TALIBANS....
I am sure the people of Pakistan have realized now that the ones who made them part from THEIR OWN COUNTRY INDIA, didn't do so for the sake of people but for their own gain.Democracy is a blessing and I hope people of Pakistan can experience that in the true sense of the word.I will pray for them. They don't deserve this suffering.Nobody does!(THE LEADERS OVER THERE DO)
What I dont understand is why with an army of 500,000  pakistan is only using 15,000 non front line troops to engage this issue. there best troops at least 30-50 k of them could stomp a mudhole in the taliban with little collateral damage. Wake up pakistan you have nukes if india attacks a few tens of thousands of troops arent gonna helpthey will be collateral damage when you or they fire nukes. Take care of your business and stop sending a few boyscouts to deal with this send some real soldiers. Your leaders are either really stupid or insane , you risk losing control over your country to try to force more aid from usa ... too handle 7000 invaders. You are a joke. think about this... if taliban take you over
the world will nuke you into nothing to prevent them from access to nukes and it wont be just the usa, then china will then come in and kill anyone left standing and your hated india will have free reign ovr kasmir. Thats reality wake up !!!!
The world super powers are not sincere! Don't they know who finances and equip the Taliban? Call the nation to qestion and let them be held responsible for the blood of innocents. The world will know no peace untill some super powers stops supporting a nation like Iran to develop atomic weapon, just because their faith cannot tolorate freedom and civility. It seems to me that the US is near left alone to struggle for human emancipation in Afganistan, thus she is been over careful in this matter. Please defy whatever and come all out to root out the menace of taliban and their likes from our world. The Muslim world is tired of extrimity.
Everyone likes to blame the U.S. it is actually those who give aid and comfort to those Islamic Radicals who need to be destroyed, and those same cowards who preach JIHAD against us hide behind innocent people.
Death to the Taliban,Al-Qaida!!!
People get your minds right and that especially means civilians caught in a war, conflict, skirmish, whatever you want to call it-its been going on for hundreds of years and will continue. Civilians ALWAYS ALWAYS, get injured and killed, unfortunately. Sometimes its intentional and sometimes its accidental. Some of these articles make it sound like its something new to warfare. Also, civilians, don't associate, hang, break bread, or whatever with the 'bad guys'. You may get killed or injured and never see it coming. This means men, women, children, pets, whatever. Its, unfortunately, just the way it is and a part of life in certain areas of the world.
DMH May 8th,
DMH Pakistan is not even finding it difficult to kick the Taliban out of Pakistan let alone failing to do so. Who gave this wrong idea. The USA, India & Israel should stop meddling in Pakistan by supporting the so called insurgencies financiallly & by suppling weapons to them on one hand then asking Pakistan to take care of the same so-called Taliban on the other.
I have prayed to the only god I know to help these people survive and be strong. This is such a beautiful country, but I can't visit in this lifetime because of the fighting. I can only look @ the pictures that others take and put on the web.
The system is broken in Pakistan, from the bottom, to the very top. It is never easy to leave home, so the left behind are left behind. Why is that terrorism comes from that part of the world, its not the religion, its the culture. No freedom, so our loans should be used on education, not on weapons. Now the hate about Taliban will come from within. That will be the only way to eradicate them. Invest on youth. educate them and you will see the results.
Night googles may be needed, but to see the real enemy you have to clearly see the problem. Problem is the failure of system, the basic fundamentals of a soverign nation. They are not responsible enough to be one. Education and awareness is needed. Pakistanis need to be liberate from Taliban, and the only way to do it. Please, tax payers manage the money given to Pakistan. Not to arm but educate pakistanis.
Watch the following clip to understand where the Taliban came from:

As explained by Mrs. Clinton
NOW TELL ME WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESS????... & Loss of innocent lives???

A Peace Loving, sad, helpless, Pakistani

Suhail Sadiq
Poor kids.  War is just hell. Who ever really wins?  It's always the innocent children, civilians, and uneducated low ranking military personel who just do what they are told that have the highest casualties.  The High Level decision makers, generals etc are the ones responcible for these atrocities.  The world has just gone crazy!

BTW I agree with the person who offered a home for the poor girl and other kids who have lost their families. The the Red Cross should try to get them out to a safer region or country.  If they cannot be placed with reletives I'm sure many people here would offer to foster or adopt a poor sweet child who has been through so much.
what the hell is doing the US bombing other nations peoples, anybody is still guessing why the world hates the united states?
I've had the unfortuante experience of being present in a religious meeting. not a violent type but one portraying the differences between Shia and Sunni muslims. I went there with a clear mind and came out thinking Shia's are worse than vermin and need to be eliminated. and this change took place in a space of 2 hours. imagine what the mindset of people who spend years with the types of preachers i encountered would be. they are not humans. they are robots programmed with one thing in mind only. to destroy everything that goes against what they have been taught. they are even more brainwashed than the american public who refuse to see, despite the massive scientific proof against the white house's theory of the 9-11 bombings, that the twin towers could not have come down based on the impact of the two planes only. Killing the taliban is not the solution. you kill one member, they will sprout 100 more for each one killed. target the brains behind the operation. and stop chasing a fictious character by the name of Osama Bin Ladin. go to their towns and find their religious leaders. even the small insignificant ones and kill them. rob them of their ability to reorganize and recruit. bring the war home to them. let them feel the pain of war and terrorism. Let America show them what terrorism really is.
