‘They kill people like us,’ says gay Iraqi

BAGHDAD – Widespread violence is down across Baghdad, but not for one minority group.

Iraq’s gay population is being targeted by militia groups in a wave of killings that has claimed the lives of up to 25 young men and boys in the past month.

"They know I am gay. I don’t know if I am going to be killed, this is up to God," said Moyad, a 38-year-old Baghdad resident who would not give his last name out of fear for his safety.

Visibly frightened, he said that he has many friends who have been sadistically tortured, some even murdered.  "They are sticking glue up their anuses; some hospitals refuse to treat them. Is it a war waged against homosexuals?" he asked.

International outrage
Most of the attacks have happened in Baghdad’s Shia neighborhoods, and many believe that religious leaders have used Friday sermons in Sadr City as a platform to incite hatred and violence toward homosexuals. The bodies of three gay men were reported to have been found in Sadr City in April with pieces of paper bearing the word for "pervert" attached to them.

Posters and leaflets have been distributed in the Baghdad neighborhoods of al-Shola, al-Hurya and Sadr City with orders to, "Cleanse Iraq from the crime of homosexuality."

Baghdad police didn’t respond to inquiries from NBC News about the attacks, but the surge in violence has gained attention by the international media.

In a letter to Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki in April, Amnesty International called for "urgent and concerted action" to stop the killings of men because of their sexual orientation.

Amnesty International expressed concern at the government’s failure to "publicly condemn the killings." It urged the government to make sure that the killings are "promptly and effectively investigated, and to see that the perpetrators are brought to justice." The letter also condemned statements from one senior police officer that,"appear to condone or even encourage the targeting of members of the gay community in Baghdad." An Amnesty spokeswoman said there had not yet been a reply from Iraqi authorities.

Campaign of fear
Moyad described a recent crusade by vigilantes in which young men were tortured with hoses and shot."For some time I never went out of my house," he said. "I also had the feeling that they would break in and get me."

Noor, a 24-year-old lesbian who also spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it is easier for her to conceal her sexuality, but she is still frightened about the possibility of being exposed – especially knowing that some of her friends were killed by the militias. "They were burned in Kadhimiya, Hurriya Al-Olaa, Hurriya Al-Thaniya, Dolaai and Dabaash."

Moyad believes that many have been killed by their own families in an effort to preserve their honor. "My friend Ahmed, from the neighborhood of Zafaraniya, was killed by his family for looking like a female. Those commandos tell the families to kill them or else they will kill them. I expect that my own brother might lead those guys to kill me."

‘Sense of panic’
Ali Hili is a gay Iraqi who fled to London and founded the fledgling U.K.-based organization,"Iraqi LGBT," a human rights organization that supports Iraqi lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.

"There is a sense of panic among the youth for fear of retaliation against anyone who is suspected of having a history of being effeminate, anyone with a homosexual past, if you act or dress like one or even have a western hairstyle," said Hili. He said that attacks by the Mahdi Army, a Shiite militia, and its supporters have increased and that death warrants have been sent to individuals.

Hili’s organization tries to help gays in Iraq who have come under attack by providing food, electricity, protection, medication and clothing at a safe house in Baghdad. The group also provides phone cards for people to report incidents of harassment, in order to document the situation, often at great risk to their safety in Iraq.

"Many people have nothing but the clothes on their backs, and sometimes not even that, no exaggeration at all here," Hili said of people seeking refuge at the safe house. His organization also tries to help people seeking asylum in other countries.

Moyad said that unfortunately things have actually gotten worse than it was during Saddam’s reign things. "I was imprisoned because I was gay, but there was a court, a trial, and the judge let me loose at the time; now they kill people like us."

And things are supposedly better since we took Sadam from power? These are very ignorant people with very ignorant beliefs.
First, I am a Christian woman and I believe that marriage should be between a man and woman.  I also believe that individuals have a right to choose their lifestyle (even if I do not agree with it) and should not be persecuted for their choices.  I believe that homosexuality is a sin (as is stealing, lying, murder, etc.); however, that is my belief and I do not beat anyone over the head with my belief.  I believe that God is a loving and just God...He does not hate gays/lesbians, He hates the sin (stealing, lying, murder, etc.)  If someone asks how I feel about the topic, I will share my thoughts and beliefs.  If you don't want to know my opinion (or at least respect my right to my own opinion), then I should not be asked.  Some have talked about intolerance...is it only intolerance when I don't believe what you believe or agree with your opinion?  If that is the case, why are you not intolerant of my beliefs?  Tolerance should be for everyone, regardless of their thoughts, beliefs, opinion, etc. I agree that what is happening in Iraq is appalling and something should be done to stop it.  I can't say that I agree that this is a United States problem when fanatical Muslims have practiced this for hundreds of years; they are taught this from a young age...we are not going to stop this behavior overnight.  I can appreciate everyone's opinion, but do not agree with all of them.  I can agree to disagree, but it does not make me intolerant.  I have gay and lesbian friends, I respect their choice/beliefs and they respect mine.  Their sexual orientation does not diminish my love for them...we just agree to disagree on the topic.  Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts.
your thanking bush for sending Iraq back to the dark ages. You are so ignorant of the way that country was before and still is before our invasion of iraq. Alot of the middle eastern world is similar to the dark ages in their practices of culture
Just because people disagree with homosexuality doesn't mean they hate gays. I am sick of all the liberals who lump Christians and other conservatives who stand out against gay marriage as "haters". I am a Christian, and I believe homosexuality is wrong. But I don't hate gays, nor do I condone what is happening in Iraq. I have gay friends. We are friends because we have far more in common that we do uncommon. If the govt wants to set up some sort of "union" for gays, it will happen. But you cannot force everyone to agree that homosexuality is right - we have the right to disagree.

By the way...why are so many posters here jumping to the conclusion that the U.S. is somehow responsible for the torture and killing of gays in Iraq? Gee whiz, you guys pick anything to display your own hate towards those with whom you disagree. Fighting hatred with hatred - makes alot of sense! Not.
Rep. Virginia Foxx (202)225-2071 (but the voicemail is full and they are not answering their phones!  Nor are her district offices answering their phones... Nothing the Republicants do anymore surprises me... exclusionary self-motivated egoistic ends justifies the means synchophants!

Rep. Foxx is out of North Carolina stood on the floor of the House of Representatives in DC and stated:

"The bill was named after a very unfortunate incident that happened, where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of robbery. It wasn't because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it's, it's really a hoax, that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills."[House Floor Speech, 4/29/09]

Matthew Sherpherd's mother was sitting in gallery at the House when Rep. Foxx uttered this nonsense... and you wonder why Iraq is in the shape it's in?

Mission Accomplished Condi, Dubs, DUmsfeld, Rove, Dick & Co.  One more country f-ed up!
At one point in American history similar events were taking place. At the present, even though they aren't being mass executed, gays and lesbians in America are still subjugated to a ruthless and tyrannical majority. Realize, I hope, that the same hate and oppression that appears in Iraq also exists in the US. The only difference is that Americans have found a much more politically correct outlet for their ignorance.
This is also a set up for getting rid of anyone at any time. Just say they are gay and they will be killed.
This is not something God condones, Jesus preached love not hate, we do not have to agree with homosexuality but we do need to be tolerant of peoples free choices.  Everything these people do is in the name of God, how wrong can they be, no different from the Klan claiming they are Christians yet look what they have done and believe in just because you are not of the white race.  What do you think Obama can do? He can not change the mind set of sick people, no one deserves this treatment no matter what there life style is but until there own government says this is wrong nothing will change, and this is not likely to happen.  If these men have to live there then I suggest they "don't ask don't tell" they know what the consequences are so if they can't or don't have the means to go anywhere else where it is safe then stop what they are doing, is it worth it to have sex with a man knowing you could die for it, I don't think so.  Personally as far as I am concerned society as a whole is messed up, the whole thing has run amuck, I can hardly wait for Jesus to come and take his church out of here.
So why do so many American and European liberals and leftists continue to support the Arabs in the Middle East?  Gays and Lesbians generally enjoy the same or more rights in Israel than in even the United States.  Imagine the consequences of a Gay Pride demonstration in Teheran (or any other Moslem city) as you would find in Israel.
Does it surprise anyone that the majority of comments on this article are not about the events as described.  Seams liberal's and/or gay rights advocates can't miss a chance to pipe in and place blame where it doesn't belong.  Stick to the facts not your one-sided opinions.
What appals me is all the people on here that look for ways to blame their government. As for the US Military, Obama is pulling them out of the cities so they can't do anything. It took the US decades after is was formed under democracy to start recognizing the rights of individuals who were different. We didn't get here over night. The fact that people believe we have done nothing right in Iraq amazes me. If you think you can do better, why don't you pack your things and go!! The lives of the people in Iraq have improved drastically since the fall of Saddam. The rest is going to take time. Nothing happens overnight!!
I guess the gay population in the US has it pretty good.  They can even get married here.
You have to remember that the US being there has nothing to do with these persecutions. These fanatics would have been allowed to do this under the previous regime. Their religion doesn't allow for any deviation from the norm. Of course all the men hold hands and little boys are in demand. Oh and yeah they keep their women clothed head to toe and locked away from prying eyes! What a bunch of hypocrits!
So, move to NH or Iowa...the liberals will love ya to death there.....
Some people blame anything, and I mean anything on Bush...its getting stupid.

I mean, if I spilled my bottle of water today at lunch & blame Bush for it- it would still be legitimate for some of you!

This is extreme religious conservatism, thats what it is..found in other parts of the world mind you!
Religion did not perform these acts. People performed them. One can't blame religious beliefs for human acts.  Life is not perfect, people are not perfect. Some people just look for a reason to hate
Getting tired of these comments from the left accusing Bush of this and anything else they can muster up.
To whomever you are who are reviewing these comments,
Why are you censoring my view? I have just as much right to express my opinion as anyone else. Just because you don't like or appreciate my view, it doesn't give you the right to sensor me; the notion of "because it's our website" as the reason you will most probably use to violate my civil rights is no excuse.  I believe the U S Constitution and my freedom of expression is being violated here. So please respect my opinion (though it goes contrary to yours) the same way that you respect the others, and give it the air time it should rightfully have.
People tend to forget that Congress voted for the Iraq war also.  Liberals seem to forget this.  Obama has given the terrorists a present.  No torture for the terrorists.  They know this now.  They will not be afraid to get caught.  The next step will be Sharia Law.

The terrorists are the people who do this awful thing to gays.  Terrorists kill innocent people.  Torture is wrong but I don't have a problem with torture when it is applied to only terrorists.
Hmmmm I would invite all the "Anti-Religious" people on the forum to take an honest look at how effective Government is at killing people.  Atheistic Communism...100 million murdered within a century...MAO, POL POT, STALIN, and others.  Atheism Secularism and Big Government at Work!  Yup...its "Religion" that is the real evil though...righhhhhtttt
I was hit by a person in a red car the other day, therefore ever red car is evil, and every person in a red car is evil.  We should get rid of ever red car and the people that drive them. How silly is that?

What these people are doing have nothing to do with religion, so don't blame it on religion.  I am a Christian. I believe homosexual acts are sins,  just as much as stealing is a sin.  But I have no problem with people who say they are gay.  I pray for them.  If they need help, I help them.  Can they live in my home? Yes.  Can they engage in homosexual acts under my roof? No.  I guess that make me a bigot.  The bible says love the Lord with all they heart, mind, and strength, and the second command is liken until the first, love your neighbor as yourself.  How is that evil?  Don't blame God for people not following his instructions.
And where exactly is Obama on this? Nowhere.  (making sure everyone knows that he thinks marriage is between a man and a woman.)  What is he doing?  Nothing.....except allowing minority communities in this country to continue their homophobic ways....  By his silence and inaction - he's proven that he is a quiet bigot who is politically driven.  Quelle Surprise.
That's OK Connie - I believe it is OK to be catholic -as long as you don't practice catholicism. See what foolish logic that is. Learn to think for yourself instead of swallowing dogma without question. That "love the sinner and not the sin" is the biggest bunch of b.s. out there. Grow up and THINK!
Jesus did not suggest stoning of the woman caught in adultery.  Adultry, homosexuality, lying, stealing,
fornication, are all spoken of in the New Testement.  Christianity teaches us to obey the 11th commandment "This one commandment fulfills all the Commandments~Love one another, as the Father loves us; forgive and you will be forgiven."  God really will sort it all out in the end.
Dede - ignorance is wrong, like your post proves and NO I don't want to kill you for it either.
The U.S. and G.W. did not mess Iraq up. Iraqis have blown it. Iraq has been exposed for what it is. A mess. Does anyone believe that homosexuals were not attacked when Saddam was in charge? It is the culture. A culture of hate.
Unbelievable... I hope things will improve for all. What a weird world we live in...
This is truly saddening and heart-wrenching  But anyone who lumps Bush, or any conservative-minded person in with these Muslim extremists is sadly mistaken.

While I myself do hold to a traditional view of marriage (as well as other more 'conservative' beliefs), NOTHING in that belief system would EVER condone such horrific acts as what is being displayed here in Iraq, and other such awful acts done throughout history in the 'name of Christ' or other religions (i.e. - the Crusades, bombing of abortion clinics, etc.)  Sadly, these are the other things that many people see when they see 'conservative Christianity' or any conservative viewpoints.  But at least for myself, speaking for a Christian worldview, these actions could not be farther from the heart of my faith... and the heart of God!

I am truly saddened by this news... but please PLEASE don't lump all persons of faith into the same category as these extreme individuals.
For all the atrocities perpetrated against gay people world-wide, lets not forget that vicious hate crimes (including killings) against LGBT persons (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) are committed in the USA virtually every day.  Matthew Shepard - strung onto a fence in freezing weather and left to die;  Angie Zapata of Greely, CO - bludgeoned to death with a fire extinguisher and the killer proudly pronouncing he killed, "it"; Louis Ramirez of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania beaten to death because he was hispanic or Charles Howard who was beaten and thrown off a bridge because he was gay - he then drowned in the river.  As barbaric as these islamic countries are to gay people, let's remember that America is far from immune from this barbaric treatment.  We have some very real issues of hate and discrimination to deal with right her in "River City", America . . .
George W., you are kidding right?  Are you people crazy? Until you have been there you would not understand what Iraq was like before.  Killing entire communities with Chemical weapons, taking a woman off the street while they were driving by, just to rape and kill her for fun.  Look in the history books, these things happened.  Do you really think they were better off before? Why don't you find an Iraqi in the US, and ask him/her what it was like, and why he/she left.  Reality is there were no human rights before, not to mention equal rights.  You would have never heard about such things before, they would have just been killed. Now non Iraqi people are causing most of the problems, and forcing extreme religion. Watch Charlie Wilsons War, and see what is going to happen when we pull out and stop sticking up for these peoples Human Rights.  Let me guess, you are clueless as to why someone in Iraq had the name "Chemical Ali". Well, it is because they Gassed women and children.  Bush tried to stop that.  By the looks of these posts, some of you support those killings.  So who are the baby killers?
I suppose you people support socialized medical care too. Just ask some one in the military how well that works. Or someone in Canada who was not paid to make "Sicko". Shure it is better than nothing, but it really sucks.  Most people get the minimal care. And everytime you go in, you see a different Doc, so they never find what is really wrong.  Oh, and we already have free clinics.  Someday when your day dreams fall apart, you will find that reality sucks.
"I believe that homosexuality is a sin (as is stealing, lying, murder, etc.); however, that is my belief and I do not beat anyone over the head with my belief."  Homosexuality is a sin like murder!  And this person believes they are tolerant.  And we are supposed to respect this belief, and we are intolerant for not tolerating this type of hate and fear.  One day we will look back at this time, and the people who espouse these views will look as heartless and cruel as the white southerners that talked about segregation, and separate services, and did nothing while their fellow southern committed acts of cruelty and torture.  The people against gay marriage are espousing hate.  Why shouldn’t two people, regardless of their sex, be allowed to marry?  The divorce rate is around 50%, men don’t pay their child support and abandon their children, etc.  There is nothing sacred about marriage.  When people mention sacred, god, or their religion, they are just covering their own hate and fear.  Religion is once again being used to oppress people.
only gays think there is hatred for gays in America, those who are straight really don't care if you are gay or not. people do not hate the gays they are fear ful of somthing they do not understand.
It is getting very tiresome reading about hatred of the US, religion, George Bush, the Church, or anything conservative the liberals hypocritically spout.  Go over to these Islamic countries and spew this hate speech and see what it gets you.  Your heads will literally be rolling in the street. On second thought, please go over there and protest your viewpoint. Accept what freedom you have here and stay out of other countries ideals.
Oh I see, it's my views or no views, right, gay rights activist? Of course it's wrong to kill anyone, not just gay people. This country is about to pass a hate crime bill that I guess makes the penalty worse if you kill a gay, Black or Jewish person. You mean to tell me that killing one of these folks is worse than killing someone else? You can throw your stones at people who do not agree with your view but you cannot justify this dumb hate crime bill. See where overkill gets you, bills like this. You can kill this person and get X years but kill these people and get More X years. Our country has just as many fools as others. Don't agree with Gay lifestyle, but I do not care if they live it, just don;t push it in my face and call me a bigot because I disagree. It's okay for the Gay community to disagree but not others, can one see a pattern here. Oh, the GW thing, is just stupidity. Maybe GW is responsible for the Iraq people bed wetting!!!!!!!!!!
Religion doesn't kill people, people kill people and some people will always HATE something or someone. Differences of opinion or differences of religion can be debated and talked about my rational people with out trying to kill each other. This is no politician's fault.
So only comments that are sympathetic to gays is permitted?  You're not biased are you?
Um, how exactly is all of this Bush's fault?  These guys are dyed in the wool fanatics and have been since the time of Constantine.  So, now Bush goes in and does what no other country has the balls to do (get rid of a crazy dictator) and now it's Bush's fault that these fundamentalists are killing gays?  Get a grip, man!  What I'm betting is that they were killing gays long before anyone ever heard of Bush or Obama.  LOOOOOOONG before.  No one else to blame but those that do the killing
These post are so stupid. How can you think George Bush is responsible for this. You all have been watching too much CNN, MSNBC or CBS,  Give me a break.  He you watch the biased news, former Pres. Bush was responsible for Katrina,(a cat 4/5 hurricane) Iraq war, 300,000 killed by Sadam Husien kurds were killed with mustard gas, (a weapon of mass distruction)  YOU ALL ARE SO STUPID TO THINK THAT IRAQIS KILLING HOMOSEXUALS IS GEORGE BUSHES FAULT.
I believe the Christian (true Christians) are tolerant of the Gay lifestyle.

We are commanded to love one another and that includes people who are Gay. We can love you and tell you that we don't condone you choice of orientation or accept your lifestyle.

When asked by the Pharisees in response to a loaded question to trip Jesus up he responded.
(in Mathew 22:37-40)
Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

So you see, true Christians (and there are false Christians in case you didn't know) - believe and are commanded to love you - not to hate, not to bring violence upon you.

SO I challenge every Gay or Lesbian, please, if a purported Christian is challenging you in some way about your chosen lifestyle - ask him or her about their chosen faith and their commandment to love - If their response is that "they must love one another" then ask them about Christ. We are all God's children.

As far as the Muslims or the Jews go - I cannot speak for them, nor do I condone the actions reported on - but I understand where they come from - They don't believe in Christ. Remember, Jesus was a Jew. It is his actions and his lineage - that makes the Christians, Christians. (to be Christ like).
This harsh treatment of gays and lesbians in Muslim countries is not unusual. My understanding is that they are treated very badly next door in Iran where supposedly a large number of gay community people there have been executed for quite some time now since the religious fanatics took over.  Of course we have religious organizations in the United States who would like to execute gays if they ever got in power, which they won't.

Try the Reconstructionist Christian Movement in the U.S. and see what you come up with.  Hell, these people would like to be able to execute wayward children according to their interpretation of the Old Testament.  For that matter those b--tards would probably like to kill people who think gays should have any rights at all.

My point is, that until the U.S. can resolve the gay rights violations at home, we should not have much time to tell other people what they should or should not be doing in Iraq or elsewhere.
ASHARA...you couldn't be more wrong. Hitler had millions killed and definitely not in the name of god. In fact, it was more of a Darwinian approach (ethnic cleasing as a form of speeding up evolution and ridding the world of "inferior" human types). Sick of course... but I also agree that what these people are doing in Iraq is sick as well. Check history of world death statistics and you'll get a feel for religious killers versus non religious killers. In the end though, I think it is not about religion, but rather the insane and nasty desire for power....which is often sought after by religious and non religious alike.
You guys who's sending these comments don't understand the arab world customes,,,it is all about Honnor of the family, Honnor of manhood, that is why you guys are in desagreement with this what is happening with the gay population in Iraq, I do understand very well your frustrations about all this and about all the unhumane treatment of the gays in Iraq. Your ideas in the USA cann't be implemented on people that do have been around for thousands of years, our USA is fairly new country compared to their countries that has been around since the creation of this world.
Who brought all this upon them is WE the US of A.
We want to change their world that they have been living in for thousand of years, We cannot do that to people we cannot enforce upon other people our wills.
People who hate gay people are driven by fear. Isn't fear truly why there is so much hate? It is the root to racism. Before people start throughing stones, they should talk to a person that is gay. They will realize that it isn't a choice. It was acquired at birth, to no ones blame. Would you condemn someone that was blind?
Um... thanks, Brooke in Ft. Lauderdale: "This is why I really don't care for this part of the world. Such blind stupidity and ignorance".  You *are* aware that we also kill LGBT people here in the U.S.: http://www.lgbthatecrimes.org  And don't even get me started on the reasoning behind the "Don't ask don't tell" military policy. Do not try to put the Western world on a pedestal when it comes to hate crimes. We can't stand with our heads high.
Shocking newsflash! It DOES happen here, too.

Have we forgotten about Matthew Shepard? And all like him?  We even have a rep from the congress who called his killing 'an unfortunate incident'.

Here I always thought an unfortunate incident is when I let my shopping cart run into your car. Now I find we classify hate crimes and murders as unfortunate incidents.

We are in many ways no better.
Remember, the United States is still in the process of recognizing gays.  Reflect upon the "Don't ask, don't tell" or domestic partnerships for same sex health coverage in addtion, same sex marriage.  I recognize we are light years beyond Iraqi actions however, we the United States remain in a growing/learning stage as well.
Here come the Bush haters on the attack again!  The funny thing is that I think they are right take Kevin’s commends for example.  Kevin wrote: Thanks George W. Bush, for returning Iraq to the Dark Ages (ha-ha, Iraq has always been in the dark ages fool).  If Bush would not had invaded Iraq the gay population would not be targeted because they would not have been allow to publicly show they are gays.  Sense Bush invaded Iraq they must have gotten an idea that they are now free to show what they believe in, that’s why Al-Qaida is targeting them.  But no is all Bush’s fault, Dum A***.
There is no reason for this kind of torture.
Persecution of any individual because of religion, gender, culture or sexual orientation is wrong! There are so many things happening in the world, that we as human beings should be outraged at. People of homosexual orientation are persecuted and ostracised in many countries (including western countires) throughout the world. Every person with a scrap of humanity should be outraged at this situation in Iraq. We invade other coutries under the guise of freedom and yet we dont allow people in our own countries the rights that they desrve as human beings, we certainly are not doing enough in almost every country to ensure rights are protected!
This is a very sad situation which is now happening in Iraq. Did we go to war just to replace one mad person/governmant with what appears to be yet another. Irrespective of your beleaf's on Gay's These people are human beings and the taking of even just one life JUST BECAUSE THEY DON'T FIT IN WITH WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE NORM IN SOCIETY is a travisity agaist humanity. May all the western powers hang their heads in shame for not condeming these continued inhumane acts and forcing the present Iraq Government to rebustly bringing those responsibale to justice.
