‘They kill people like us,’ says gay Iraqi

BAGHDAD – Widespread violence is down across Baghdad, but not for one minority group.

Iraq’s gay population is being targeted by militia groups in a wave of killings that has claimed the lives of up to 25 young men and boys in the past month.

"They know I am gay. I don’t know if I am going to be killed, this is up to God," said Moyad, a 38-year-old Baghdad resident who would not give his last name out of fear for his safety.

Visibly frightened, he said that he has many friends who have been sadistically tortured, some even murdered.  "They are sticking glue up their anuses; some hospitals refuse to treat them. Is it a war waged against homosexuals?" he asked.

International outrage
Most of the attacks have happened in Baghdad’s Shia neighborhoods, and many believe that religious leaders have used Friday sermons in Sadr City as a platform to incite hatred and violence toward homosexuals. The bodies of three gay men were reported to have been found in Sadr City in April with pieces of paper bearing the word for "pervert" attached to them.

Posters and leaflets have been distributed in the Baghdad neighborhoods of al-Shola, al-Hurya and Sadr City with orders to, "Cleanse Iraq from the crime of homosexuality."

Baghdad police didn’t respond to inquiries from NBC News about the attacks, but the surge in violence has gained attention by the international media.

In a letter to Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki in April, Amnesty International called for "urgent and concerted action" to stop the killings of men because of their sexual orientation.

Amnesty International expressed concern at the government’s failure to "publicly condemn the killings." It urged the government to make sure that the killings are "promptly and effectively investigated, and to see that the perpetrators are brought to justice." The letter also condemned statements from one senior police officer that,"appear to condone or even encourage the targeting of members of the gay community in Baghdad." An Amnesty spokeswoman said there had not yet been a reply from Iraqi authorities.

Campaign of fear
Moyad described a recent crusade by vigilantes in which young men were tortured with hoses and shot."For some time I never went out of my house," he said. "I also had the feeling that they would break in and get me."

Noor, a 24-year-old lesbian who also spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it is easier for her to conceal her sexuality, but she is still frightened about the possibility of being exposed – especially knowing that some of her friends were killed by the militias. "They were burned in Kadhimiya, Hurriya Al-Olaa, Hurriya Al-Thaniya, Dolaai and Dabaash."

Moyad believes that many have been killed by their own families in an effort to preserve their honor. "My friend Ahmed, from the neighborhood of Zafaraniya, was killed by his family for looking like a female. Those commandos tell the families to kill them or else they will kill them. I expect that my own brother might lead those guys to kill me."

‘Sense of panic’
Ali Hili is a gay Iraqi who fled to London and founded the fledgling U.K.-based organization,"Iraqi LGBT," a human rights organization that supports Iraqi lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.

"There is a sense of panic among the youth for fear of retaliation against anyone who is suspected of having a history of being effeminate, anyone with a homosexual past, if you act or dress like one or even have a western hairstyle," said Hili. He said that attacks by the Mahdi Army, a Shiite militia, and its supporters have increased and that death warrants have been sent to individuals.

Hili’s organization tries to help gays in Iraq who have come under attack by providing food, electricity, protection, medication and clothing at a safe house in Baghdad. The group also provides phone cards for people to report incidents of harassment, in order to document the situation, often at great risk to their safety in Iraq.

"Many people have nothing but the clothes on their backs, and sometimes not even that, no exaggeration at all here," Hili said of people seeking refuge at the safe house. His organization also tries to help people seeking asylum in other countries.

Moyad said that unfortunately things have actually gotten worse than it was during Saddam’s reign things. "I was imprisoned because I was gay, but there was a court, a trial, and the judge let me loose at the time; now they kill people like us."

Thanks George W. Bush, for returning Iraq to the Dark Ages.
This is why I really don't care for this part of the
world.  Such blind stupidity and ignorance
Spreading that freedom!!
Well, that is the way many 3d world countries with a strong heirarchial religious foundation treats a variety of minorities of all types.  The liberal views of the West are in a distinct minority in so many areas of life and culture. Unfortunately if you don't fit society's accepted norm, you either leave or learn to fit.
I'm really puzzled to hear how this is all working out, especially the open persecution of gays. When I was in Iraq, I was shocked at the gayness of the place, lot's of male on male sexual contact, and out in the open. I was propositioned before with "same-same" looking for some kind of trysts.

I was really perplexed, but I hear that is a common occurrence in Muslim countries.
This kind of thing is the inevitable result of fundamentalism gone wild. It doesn't matter if the fundamentalism is Christian, Jewish, Muslim,  or any other group of hard liners. The mistreatment of homosexuals leads to the same treatment for any other group they despise.  It doesn't matter, male or female, young or old, the world must be "purified".
Just one more good argument against religion.  More cruel acts have been perpetrated in the name of god than for any other reason.  Most, if not all major religions (Buddhism is more a philosopy than a religion) are intolerant of anything different - different beliefs, different orientations, even different modes of dress.  I cannot think of one that's not.
Congratulations, GW and Rove (and the likes).  You have finally brought American-style democracy to Iraq, which was your goal after all.  (Well, it was your goal after WMD, after no connection to 9/11, and after bringing a tyrant to justice, anyways, but YOU GOT THERE!)
How sad that the U.S. is responsible for allowing the rise of these attacks by the Shia extremists. For shame!
Ah yes, another tolerant society forming in the middle east.  And before we get too smug here, don't forget right here in the US we're doing all we can to block homosexuals from legally binding commitments.  After all, we're nothing if not citizens of judgment!
This is outrageous. What are the U.S. armed forces doing to prevent these murders? I thought the U.S. is supposed to be helping to spread democracy not hatred and intolerance! Scapegoating the most vulnerable is one of the cowards oldest and most often used tricks.
Call the Pentagon and your Congressman and tell them to stop this barbaric form of injustice!
This is horrible! But, I believe, that this same tactic would be occuring here in the US if we didn't have the discrimination laws we have. I don't know how anyone can say being gay is a "lifestyle" choice, who would "choose" to be treated this way??
So sad that people are judged, not by the content of their character, but simply by whom they love.  Discrimination, segregation and denial of civil rights to minorities leads to excuses for hate, violence and even murder.

That is why it is so vitally important that we Americans, as enlightened people, end discrimination against gay and lesbian families, stop shutting them out of the rights and responsibilities of marriage and show the world by example what it is to respect the dignity of other human beings.
Lets be realistic, if the crazy pro prop 8 people could get away with it. America would be in the same position. Hate is everywhere they just happen to show there true colors to the world instead of hiding it.
Typical stupidity from that part of the world. Still in the dark ages. Still killing in the name of a false god. What omniscient, omnipotent, al loving god would support that? Clearly their god is one created by man and none there have the brains to realize it.
Iraqi Gays should automatically be given US residency just like straight Cubans.
This type of behavior is next of kin to the holocaust.  To round people up and kill them because of their sexual orientation is horrific.  But of course, the US Government won't do anything about it because the issue is the kind that the American people are still not unified enough to rally behind.  It makes me sick that this is going on in Iraq and other parts of the world.
Gay communities around the world need to send whatever support we can to help these people in Iraq - we also need to work to find ways to get them out of that country as quickly as possible using whatever means necessary.
What is Obama doing about this?  What has he done for gays at all, even though such a high percentage of us voted or him?  HE'S DONE NOTHING!!!  Do something, Obama!
The Human Race needs to purge itself of hatred and violence such as this.  The US should address this Human Rights travesty.
It's modern day witch hunts.  I am not surprised.  For some reason most men are very threatened by gay men.  But this type of violence has been directed toward women for millennia.  My question is this, "What will it take to end men's violence once and for all??"
They kill anyone who doesn't follow their fanatical beliefs.
Fundamentalist religion at its worst. Take note, United States.
Once again, we see the unintended and lasting consequences of this disastrous invasion. Had the U.S. focused on catching actual terrorists instead of settling Bush the Elder's personal grudge against Saddam Hussein, how much better off we all would be...
NO!  Wait a darn minute here........according to some, Islam does not have any homosexuals to begin with !!!  [ believe that and I'll tell you another one ] Such as........Islams don't consume alcohol or "recreational drugs" Nor do they consort with fast women............

Any way you slice it, it's still baloney !!
So why have there been so many demonstrations (by large groups of gay people) in San Francisco on behalf of the Arabs in the middle east?  They (the gays) would be the first people that radical Arab muslims would line up for execution.  Why would you support those values; especially if one is gay ??
Oh my god !!!  This is horrible.
Separation of church and state does not exist in most Middle Eastern countries.  You cannot expect Pres. al-Maliki to do anything; it would create weakness in the difficult state of getting Sunni's and Shia's to work together.
Good for that guy that fled and started that organization providing safe houses. This is something that muslim extremists and far right wing republicans have in common. Hatred of homosexuals. Seriously though, there is nothing funny about this. Iran should be concerned. They should know there are gays there too, unlike the belief of their president.
How could anyone who claims to believe in a benevolent God create so much pain in peoples' lives.  Until this world learns to resolve their intollerence and hate for one another we will all suffer.  These acts are not just upon Gays, they are upon humanity.
Remarkable, to think that in the US the church leaders  take the position that being gay is a choice...Do we think that someone would "chose" a "lifestyle" where your very life is at stake?
Next time someone preaches against Gay civil rights  or gay marriage, remember this story.

All people should be treated with dignity and should have equal rights. President Obama needs to make his voice be known on this issue.
Another sad example of religous conservatism taken to it's logical end.
Like the radicals of any "religion"  this is an example of the devils activity in religion.  Like the abortion protestors whom resort to violence, the Muslim with their terroist Jihad now you have these idiots parading this as God's will.  HOMOSEXUALITY is a SIN and an ABOMINATION, however JUDGEMENT is the LORD's not man's HE already has a FIRE waiting for them jsut be patient and allow the LORD to do HIS work, that you may not be included in the FIRE.
Who knows what they might have done to Jesus...and yes did because he dared to question the religious leaders of the day. After all jesus was a single man, who had a following of mostly all men and had a very close and special relationship with a man named John. He might have been suspect for his attitude and the compassionate way he acted toward all people. Do you think Jesus would have allowed that kind of intolerance among his following of disciples...I hardly think so but not so with alot of the fundamentalist preachers of today..By todays standards Jesus would have been crucifed again just because He loved people with uncoditional love.
And yet people still insist that being homosexual is a choice. Why would ANYONE choose to live a gay lifestyle under these horrible circumstances?? If they could just choose to be attracted to women, it would make their lives so much easier. I think the people who spoke out are very brave, even if they did so anonymously.
Where was all of this outrage during the 20 years that Saddam was doing this to tens of thousands of civilians regardless of sexual orientation? Why would you support US intervention now, but not then? Obama should do something to stop this don't you think?
OMG, others who posted actually blame this on Bush? Newsflash...Iraq was like this long before we got there, and will continue to be this way long after we leave. Wow...
I dont realy care if it happens anywhere, I dont care what Iraq does they are their own nation and all you liberals wanted the U.S. out Im sure the U.S. Miltary has better things to do also. The people against religion in the U.S. maybe thats all that holds back people from acting on how they feel a sense of right and wrong.
First of all homosexuality is an abomination and an evil. People wake up !!! Look to God's Wrath on the homosexual city of Saddom and Ghamorah. Do you think this unnatural way of life is normal. It has polluted the American society, brought on AIDS, destroyed countless families and children lives.  Also, look to the decline of America and many other western countries that supports this evil way  of life. Many Christian group are also being coerced into this evil lifestyle. Don't hate on the Muslims who denounces this evil from becoming widespread in  their society. Also all Muslims know this goes against the natural way that God created man. They are just following their lust desires, have become corrupted by the Western culture and has listened to the whispers of the Devil--who only wishes for others to share in on his Doom day. It's senseless to try and run to the west for media protection--true Muslims/Muslim countries will not change God's books to please those who envy Islam and seek to change it. Rather save your souls by changing this evil way of life before it becoem too late to seek repentants.
This act of harming people because of their homosevual acts is evil. The Bible says " God hates the act(meaning homosexualism) but loves the people (all people). Let's pray for people who find themselves bond by the evil spirit of bondage and stop beng judges. Only God is the judge.
So sad and so backwards.
Oh great!  This is Bush's fault too! Freakin' idiots.  I'm sure Sadamm Hussein was so tolerant of these people too!  Just like that great humanitarian in Iran.  Oh, it's God's fault too! Heathens.
It's sad that these people have to live in fear for just being themselves. Best bet if for them to escape to another country. Or stay home, arm themselves and start a revolution.
Wonder if the ACLU will go over and file a HATE CRIME against them. And the first guy still blamed GW Bush.
While this behavior is outrageous, cruel, and barbaric, we acting as if GLBT people in the states have equality under our law. If we are to be the model of democracy and equality, than we must practice what we preach. I am not saying that the treatment of GLBT people in America and that in Iraq is the same, but we still have issues to work on here at home. Why are we debating whether two people who love each other and happen to be of the same sex can get married or not? It is a civil right of every Amercian citizen. We are surprised that a third world, middle eastern, impoverished, country discriminates against homosexuals, when we, the torch carriers of democracy and freedom can't make up our minds about same sex marriage?
Hey Homosexuals-gay -lesbian is very very wrong, but killing these people or any people that thier live styles are different is very wrong to.
Hey Homosexuals-gay -lesbian is very very wrong, but killing these people or any people that thier live styles are different is very wrong to.
What is really remarkable is that none of you who commented (so far) have made derogatory comments towards gays, suggesting 'they had it coming'. Strangely enough the American Evangelical Taliban is creating just that kind of spirit, with their Old Testament Gone Wild views.
Ha. Why should the US military step in. Those are the same types that protest the war.
You should see the treatment of gays in the public schools of the United States.  Teachers don't often see it.  It takes palce in the halls, the cafeteria, the athletic field, before and after school, etc.  The hate is alive and well here.  Even some minority groups in the U.S. who have made gains in civil rights, show much hate towards gay people.  It is a very tragic state of affairs.  Some action needs to begin at home first.  Our own fundamentalists feed the fires of hate in this country.  Check the suicide rates for gays in America. So many live a tormented life.
