Egyptian farmers forced to kill swine herds

CAIRO – Amidst overflowing bags of garbage, Abu Sayed raises pigs, chickens, ducks, pigeons and goats on a small muddy plot of land in order to feed and clothe the extended family of 14 with whom he shares a blackened makeshift shack.

Since he doesn’t own a radio or a TV, we were the first to inform him that the Egyptian government decreed on Wednesday that his pigs, along with all 300,000 pigs in the country, had to be slaughtered as a precaution against the spread swine flu; despite the fact that no cases of the H1N1 swine flu virus have been reported here and it is spread by people, not pigs.

Half of the families’ annual income comes from the sale of their small herd of 25 pigs, which usually sell for about $45 a piece.

Sayed looked away as he responded to the unwelcome news about the mandatory slaughter and said, "The interest of the country is more important than anything."

But his brother Ahmed Mohammed was less magnanimous. "If they want to do this, they must find some other kind of income to replace it. All the family depends on the money we get from the sale of the pigs. My mother is sick. She needs money to get medicine for her diabetes and needs to get her eye infection treated."

Encouraged by his brother’s frankness, Sayed ventured an opinion. "Before they take a decision, they have to see what people can do instead to make a living."

Main source of income: gone
The brothers’ family has experience with the government’s hasty and heavy-handed decrees.  They used to haul garbage for a living with two donkey-drawn carts. One day the government arbitrarily decided to forbid donkey and horse drawn carts from certain Cairo districts. During their rounds, police seized their donkeys and broke one of the carts. They had to pay a fine to get the second cart back. It now sits idle in their yard.

With their main source of income gone, they were no longer able to send their children to school. They don’t know how they can recover if they lose their tiny swine herd.

"We buy clothes for the children from the sale of the pigs," said the brothers’ sister Karima Mohammed.

Even with their meager income, the family does without even the most basic necessities. Youssef, the youngest child at 18 months, walks barefoot amidst the refuse. Because their shack has no plumbing, the women carry plastic jerricans of water on their heads from a water source nearby for the use of both the family and the livestock.

‘How can we kill the little ones?’
An Egyptian cabinet spokesman had initially suggested that herders would be reimbursed for each slaughtered pig, but on Wednesday the minister of agriculture said that since farmers were allowed to sell the pork of fit animals, there would be no need for compensation.

But Sayed said it would be impossible to salvage the meat by slaughtering and freezing the herd at once as the government decreed. "We sell two or three at a time at the request of the butcher. We are not butchers. We raise them. We can’t do that. How can we kill the little ones?"

Meanwhile, the government also sent a health ministry employee to inoculate all 14 members of the family against swine flu on Wednesday.

"How do they make a decision without figuring out how people will live," Sayed asked.

The United Nations said the mass cull of up to 300,000 pigs was "a real mistake" because the new viral strain – a mix of swine, avian and human viruses – has not actually been found in pigs.

Still, on Thursday, the state began confiscating animals anyway.

Police and health officials arrived at Sayed’s house early in the morning Thursday. They threatened to arrest him if he did not surrender the animals, and after hitting him on the head and legs several times, he gave in.

When he arrived at the slaughterhouse with the animals, he received no compensation from the government, instead he was actually charged for the cost of slaughtering the pigs. He was also told that he would be given the meat after the animals were slaughtered so he could try to sell it. But Sayed and others say the pork sellers now refuse to buy the meat and have closed their shops.

Author's note: In response to some of the comments below, the Sayed family is Muslim, although many of the families that raise pigs in Egypt are members of the country's Christian minority.

This is the stupidest thing ive ever herd of. Why kill the pigs when they arent even transmitting the flu. Kill the stupid people that came up with that rule :)
Just a little note for the uninformed. Yes, Muslims do not eat or touch pork. However, the small amout of pigs in Egypt are raised for the Christian minoroty there, who are allowed to consume pork. Just because someone is named Mohamed does not make them a Muslim, it is an Arabic name, therefore Arabic Christians can also have the name. If you want to comment on other peoples ignorance, at least make sure you yourself are not sounding like an ignorant fool.
Can we somehow donate to the family to cover the loss of their pigs?
I wonder how many pigs would naturally be in that land if people weren't "raising" them. That is an extremely large number of swine. That makes me wonder how many are in this country. It must be in the millions. And we hear that there is not enough land to feed people. Maybe all peoples should raise fewer animals and grow more food. You can feed a lot more people with an acre of grains and vegetables than you can with animals. And you do not have to worry about methane polluting the air either.
The Egyptian government is going too far with this one. They force people to effectively destroy their livelihood, and then say "Oh, they'll be okay, they can just sell the meat"... one problem. That's not the way the local economy works. Just because the government wants to play at having the kind of affluence the west pretends it still has does not mean it can impose its worldview on its populace. Most of those recently developed of developing countries are made of of wealthier, and often very corrupt, individuals who tend to be part of some clique or another.
there are 10's of millions of christians in egypt, people. yes it is ignorance to kill the pigs since the flu is spread via human to human. the poor guy. it's very sad and wasteful.
this is a country that our government gives millions each year to...this money supports Eygpt's repressive leaders and pays for ridiculous, barbaric, ignorant practices such as this.  too bad for the pigs and the hapless farmers.
And you thought that the decendants of the Egyptians that built the Pyramids and invented beer and had an alphabet and invented perfume  are in Egypt today????  The slaves of the Pharoahs are in Egypt today!
"We are from the government, and we are here to help you."
This whole swine flu thing is just more panic media coverage about more or less nothing.  Consider the number of people who have died from this - 160?  200? even 1000?  Out of 6 BILLION!  Give me a break!  Thousands in the US alone die from the regular flu in ONE winter.  What a bunch of media hype, stirred up to generate news sales.
This is the same as the knee-jerk reaction when all the chickens were massacred when the bird flu came about. It's insane. If the gov't insists on killing every single pig, then the gov't should compensate the fair market value of every single pig to the folks who are now losing their livelihoods.

The Egyptian government needs to move into this century, not be stuck a few centuries behind.
Wow RJ, How can you say that. Just because they live in a muslim nation doesn't mean they are muslim. How can it be "O.K" to remove someones source of income? With no compensation!! Plain ignorance!!
The Muslim Egyptians raise the pigs to feed the Egyptian Christians who do eat pork.
All you people are stupid..Let the country deal with there own problems!..
Pigs are actually very clean animals compared to monkeys, dogs, etc.
With all the news coverage of this, I'm supprised that we did not do the same thing....our media kinda went overboard on this whole thing....a full week of prime time coverage and people wonder why we begin to freak out.  The TV is telling us how bad it is and gasp...the first US citizen killed....and this and that for a full week.
"I sympathize because in the US we will soon be in his position should the government continue their path." - Anonymous, Dallas, Texas

I guess ignornance ain't jus' local to Egypt.
First of all muslims people are not suppsoe t otoug hor eat pigs, I was surprised a Country like Egypt has muslim familes who rare these animals (swine) in a way it is good for them t oget rid of the pigs, rather they can rare other types of animals, sheep, goats etc...
As an Egyptian, I am also amazed, but not by the stupidity of the Egyptian government. I am amazed by the well intentioned thinking of the of the comments, and, to a larger extent, by the ignorance of their authors.
Egypt is not exclusively Muslim, it holds a minority of Chistians too, who are allowed to eat "unholly" food. In fact most pig farmers are Christian. This decision to kill all the pigs is not stupid at all. It is a thinly veiled attempt to hurt the minority as much as possible. This is yet another way you can be harrassed if you are a Christian in Egypt. I guess I'll take that over a suicide bomb.
Let' stop assuming good faith from the Egyptian government. The swine flu was the next best thing it was waiting for, the first being Crusader's desease or Jesus' flu.
Remember we think that Egypt is wise and important at the UN.  I never realised how poor Egypt is.  How do you tell everyone else in the world how to live when you don't take care of your own.  More reason to leave the UN.  Please tell me that this is not what Americans are looking toward in the future.
Because it has been proven that this flu is spread by people not pigs, why did the government order all the pigs killed? That is just as stupid as ordering the people who are infected killed!!! I pray this family and all the others in this same situation makes it through ok!
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Matthew 7:1 At times of great sadness, only HE sees the depths of the hearts and will handle accordingly.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteosness, and all things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble or its own." Matthew 6:33-34

I have read all of these statements. I pray that we look to the one and only God and lift eachother up.

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21

What a simple prayer can do. I dare you to try it. :)
I wonder what the government would do if this was called the Arab Flu??
I'm surprised they didn't have all his animals slaughtered for fear of the pigs spreading the swine flu. How paranoid and insane. The poor hardworking man is left with less than half his income and handed a bill for a decison that an ignorant backwards government made.
God, not Allah is reaping his jusice. No good Muslim would dare go near, raise, touch, or eat swine. True justice is reaping it's reward. Let all Muslims suffer. They have come to there final day's.
I say we should do the samething here in the United States. Pigs are dirty and this should be stopped.
Or will they, in the end, be the smart ones! Only time will tell. Its in Gods hands.
Rose from Boston said "It makes one consider that if they hadn't labeled this 'flu' as Swine - and instead used Isreal's recommendation of "Mexican" (where the Flu began) - then much of this needless sacrifice of animals may have been prevented."

My response:  Well Rose, if they're stupid enough to kill off all the pigs in the country, they're probably stupid enough to go after all the Mexicans they can find and so the same to them.

what the hell are you all talking about!!! is that a stupid decision? yes.  At least our government ruined a few families' incomes. Are you all oblivious to what your previous government's done with economic meltdown and ruining millions if not billions of lives!!
The Egyptian Gov't are a bunch of idiot infidels!!! And as for a few of the comments about the US slaughtering pigs, SHAME ON YOU TOO!  I have never heard of something so stupid in my life.  I would guess to say that all animals are dirty to some extent, gee....because why? They are animals!!! Duh! Besides, pigs are more intelligent that dogs! I love all animals and respect all animals....I feel for the pigs, this is so stupid!  Can't someone in authority from another country do something?  This will also drive up the price of pork worldwide.  Not to mention how much these poor people are suffering with loss of income. The economy will take another blow.  This is a travesty beyond belief!!!!
Wow. I guess this is good news for me, I live in Egypt and this means cheaper bacon. It is sad though that people here will lose their only source of income. A lot of people here live with less than a dollar a year. It is sad to see this. To those people who think that the Nile is the only source for the people's water, you are wrong, there are oasis and canals. Egypt is a very agricultural based country. Also the Nile area is filled with tons garbage, while the Sinai Peninsula is beautiful with little trash.

I hate to say this but my people (America) are almost as ignorant as the Egyptians government.
there is 9 million coptic christians live in egypt.most pig farmers are christians "mohamed" is a rare case . and almost all consumers of pork are christians . so it is very easy disicion to make . and believe me it is propably very popular in egypt.

Make things seem even more hopeless for these people and the Egyptian government will have only made it easier for radicals to recruit.
Hey Ray from kansas....look in the mirror dude..then you will see what a filty, disgusting pig looks like!! And peolpe are ignorant because the flu is a VIRUS!!! You cannot get swine flu from eating pork!! Its airborn!! Secondly, why do they even call it "swine"flu? They have not found any trace of it in any pigs...except maybe for you Ray.
Frankly, I think this whole story has been blown out of proportion.  It is a flu that spreads, like every other flu virus, you don't see the media going crazy over every flu virus that spreads around during the season.  The media is putting everyone in a panic for no good reason.
While the plight of the farmer is understandable, it also cannot be denied that the potential perfect storm created by humans raising ducks and pigs together is the source of annual assaults of various strains of influenza.  Perhaps a better long term solution would be to use the influence of the WHO and UN to persuade national governments to segregate the raising of birds from the raising of swine and to create economic incentives to instigate better hygiene practices when raising livestock.
This is why the US should stop supporting regimes like Mubbarak's. Not only ignorance is illustrated here,  but a sad example of poverty and negligeance lived by millions in the world.
The fact that a muslim family is raising pigs is, from a muslim point of view, just unacceptable even if they do not eat it. It's comparable to selling alcohol, even if you do not drink.
So, let me recap: Ignorant governement, ignorant people and please don't blame islam; this is actually a sad good example of anti-islam because islam teaches us to acquire knowledge (first verse of koran) and be kind to each other even to non-muslims, believe it!
This repressive government in Egypt needs to be overthrown.  This is what leads the people to rise up, hunger and poverty.  When these viruses are named, they need to be careful what they name them. (They should listen to our vice president and keep their pigs off of subways and airplanes.) Thanks for the great advice Joe!
How can a government be so ignorant in this day and age?? Those poor helpless animals who have no defense! Such a shame!!!! Idiots - all idiots.
Really shows how dumb and uneducated the Egyptian government is.
This a clear cut case of government acting upon their emotions w/o the benefit of intellect. Sounds to me like this government already has a brain disease called swiney-itis. Wanting someone or somthing to blame for the swine flu. Slaughtering baby pigs or any pigs that are not sick in inhumane. By the grace of God I pray for better conditons for these people, and their means of survival. I pray that this family (all families)are blessed by Gods redeeming power and grace. God Speed for the families, and the pigs.......
Most miss the poing in a Islamic world.  Pigs are not an acceptable food source.  Thus, not a neccessary need in their social group.  Now as for the nature of their treatment towards each other, is not according to their belief.  Their own belief states that one must show compassion and charity in order to receive rewards from their God.  It may be that the ones raising the pigs were of Christian belief.  Thus, a crack down on a religious fratcion is more like it.  Ad for the spread, like many have said, it happened before in the USA in 1976, we had many deaths then too.  Just food for thought.
why all these comments about pigs. The government of Egypt does not take any chance. Its job is to protect its citizens from any disease that may appear on the scene. It happened several years ago when the chicken flu came into the international stage. secondly, the family that has been mentioned in the article feed the pigs and whatever they raise (chicken, goats, lambs, donkys, etc.) the garbage its members collect from the local streets. above all, pigs are filthy and dirty animals and are forbidden to be eaten in Islam, jeudism and christianity. The same family and others can support themselves by doing better works for the society. Note that their chicken are eating garbage they collect early morning from the neighborhood including human wastes. health is not of a big concern to them since they are ignorant not the government. to those who feel sorry for the little pigs, how about our fellow humanbeings who are being killed in unjust wars all over the world because of the aggression and greed of multi-trillion dollar corporations who are after the natural resources of those 3rd world countries?. Why should we not help those countries with useful technologies to improve their living status?? we must think before we jump into conclusion.
for all you stupid uneducated people wha say pigs are dirty the reason they roll around in mud is they dont have sweat glands .
for all who think the U.S. has a bad gov't, be thankfull we live here. this event is like anything in life, "its what you make of it". media and gov't statements about the swine flu didn't cause a panic among citizens( even though it is covered a little to much). the citizens put themselves in a panic. its the flu. its commonly found in pigs but rarely kills when treated properly. it just happen to turn up in humans. keep your immune systems up and treat this like its late fall or winter when flu usually hits. the bad thing is all the air travel. if a plane with 300 people lands in Anywhere USA then those 300 get on 300 more planes, each with 200- 300 people on them bound for Somewhere USA. not to mention the people everyone contacted with at the airports or the people that reloaded each of those planes. see where this could get out of hand. but not to the point of slaughtering harmless pigs for no reason. its not mad pig disease.
They have a kid walking barefoot because they can't afford the basic necessities. (1) don't you think that having shoes on the kid's feet will avoid germs? (2) if you can't afford to buy your kid shoes then get birth control and stop having them!!!!!
Is there any way you can facilitate the sending of donations?  Us readers calling the Egyptian government idiotic (which it seems is true) isn't going to help that family.  Please tell us how we can help... would love to send donations...
This is a sad but true reality in my beloved Egypt."The interest of the country is more important than anything"-Sayed. Notice how he is not objective of this mandate even though it will significantly derail his income. This due to the fact that he is under the impression that it is for the good of the country, a country that unfortunately does not really care about people like him.... the real Egyptians, all 75-80 million of them. Masr um el donia?
This is why the US should stop supporting regimes like Mubbarak's. Not only ignorance is illustrated here,  but a sad example of poverty and negligeance lived by millions in the world.

So, tell me again, convince me, Leaders of the Egyptian nation:  this is not an attempt at getting rid of pigs which are a huge no-no for devout Muslims. This is not an attempt at flexing an already repressive arm of the government is it?  The alternative is to believe that you think the key to controlling the flu is killing pigs and you know that's not true. (You do know that, don't you? Your medical advisors aren't that ill informed, are they??)
