In Mexico, ‘We can't touch her anymore’

MEXICO CITY – Almost two weeks ago Paola Alquicira woke up, complaining to her husband of a scratchy throat. As the day progressed, the young housewife felt even worse, but went about her normal day.

She dragged herself to an exercise class, called her mom once or twice and tried to keep pace with her 2-year-old daughter. By nightfall Paola was running a fever, had muscle and joint pain, and a runny nose. Although it was tough with a small toddler, Paola, 23, opted to stay in bed the next day, hoping to shake "la gripe," Spanish for the flu.

Instead, over the next two days her fever spiked and before the week ended she was hospitalized after an X-ray showed acute pneumonia. Her husband sent his small daughter to stay with relatives outside of Mexico City so he could keep vigil at his wife's bedside.

"She just would not get any better," said her husband Enrique, explaining that the family was baffled by her condition.

Then last Thursday, he learned the reason why.

His government disclosed that the nation was in the grips of a dangerous epidemic, that a new strain of deadly swine flu had been detected in the country.

With the help of the U.S. Center for Disease Control, Mexican scientists announced the discovery of H1N1, a bizarre new mix of pig, bird and human flu virus now frightening people across the globe.

Suspected to be present in 17 of Mexico's 31 states, the virus has killed more than 150 people and sickened another 2,400 here, while fast spreading to other places in the world. Every day health authorities announce hundreds of more suspected cases.

H1N1's preferred target is particularly worrisome.

Not just the usually vulnerable – children, elderly and people with compromised immune systems – are at risk. But, young previously healthy adults like Paola Alquicira turn out to be in particular danger.

Acting on that finding, health authorities placed the young woman in quarantine in Mexico's National Institute of Respiratory Illness over the weekend. Shortly afterwards, she fell into a coma as her lungs continued to fill with fluid and she struggled to breath.

Paola's husband spends day and night standing on the sidewalk outside the hospital, silently pacing among half a dozen other families. He stoically waits for late afternoon when he is issued a special ID that allows him to walk past the armed police guarding all three hospital entrances. Once behind the concrete walls, Enrique is given 30 minutes to steal a glance at his wife and speak with her doctor. He and their young daughter seem to have been spared infection.

But the moment authorities added Paola Alquicira's name to their list of patients suspected to be infected with H1N1, her parents were barred from her side for their own protection.

"My daughter is in grave condition and we can only see her through the glass," said her mother Alejandra, who too stands in the quiet street, her emotions just partially hidden by the hospital mask covering her mouth.

"We can't touch her anymore."

Not even to say goodbye, if the unthinkable were to happen.

Do you know that 36,000 cases of the regular flu kill United States citizens every year?  Why is the media and the government speaking of pandemic or closing of school, public events etc.....Do they know something they aren't telling us?   Like the photo op over New York?
I just thank God for everything. The Lord said something like this would come. I feel for the ones that are sick. It is time for all of us to get our house in order. We don't know when our time is. I thank God for President George Bush. He knew something like this was coming.
We are praying for everyone that has been affected by this disease. Parents please take care of your children more than ever.
we need to give the people of the world confidence and assurance with the truth about what this country is really doing about it and proof of that what we are doing is working and the government needs to stop playing it off and be upfront and ready now not next season who knows how long they new. to all the people this has affected i my prayers are with you! God bless everyone!
I have a rare immune disease and am on chemo and steroids along with alot of other meds for my condition and frankly just want to lock the doors and keep inside.  I'm glad you are showing stories like this so the people who think it is all hype might take a second and rethink things.  I feel so bad for the families who are affected by this.

What I really don't understand is why anyone would knowingly travel to a place with many known cases and have an "I don't think that there is anything to worry about attitude".  Unfortunately it puts us all at risk especially people like me who try our best to stay well for as long as we can. What might only be a slight illness in you could kill those of us with compromised immune systems.  I just pray it's over sooner rather than later.

I also think if things get worse maybe we need to consider closing down all schools early to help prevent the spread among our children.  With the internet and other sources there is no reason our children can't learn outside of the "typical" classroom.  I've had to homeschool my daughter twice in the last 1 1/2 years due to my condition and we've done just fine.  You do what you have to do.  God Bless all and my prayers are with you.
Marie, I think that you are totally correct. Unfortunally that is not how the world works .You might have your own opinions. Good! keep them to yourself. Thanks due all respect.
I´m very impressed to witness how mexicans are really submitting economic interests to the world´s welfare.... The cooperation with authorities is incredible.  I´m feeling more proud than ever to be part of a culture that treasures life over all other interests.... I really thank the sympathy and prayers of all who are not mexicans but have a fraternal heart, and feel part of the world community. It´s wonderful to find that out. God bless us all...
The media will psycologically suppress the immune systems of us all. Doom and gloom, breaking news, scary info on flu pandemic coming up right after these really important commercials. May God bless us all!!!
I just think that it would be a good idea to close the borders just for the time being.. all we can do is wash are hands alot!! stay away from where people are doing there travelin.. Disneyland, Las Vegas,All tourist attractions you get people from all over... spray your invironment with germ killing sprays..
You need to believe more on media than the government. The government does not always tell the truth about catastrophe to deter hysteria. Even body counts during war are being miscounted by the government. The media at the most tell the truth in regards to deaths, stories, etc. Most people should know about this.
Eat raw ginger and garlic to improve the immune system for fighting with flu.

I feel sorry for the whole world. Millions of people will get sick before it is over with. I just feel helpless. I wish there were something I could do!
I read about this flu article after reading about the terrific amounts of violence from the drug cartels and I have to wonder - a few death because of flu compared to how many?! from weapons via the drug cartels - i.e. 7 police officers dead in 60 seconds. Hmmm...maybe the drug lords could get this flu.
The people have the flu, and we must fight to keep. It from spreading. Once all the facts are in we will know where it started. This is not the time to blame anyone. It is time to pray, and to protect ourself, and others.
My prayers go out to all of Mexican residents & all the worldwide hit areas. We need to pray,be smart, dont panic,as a healthcare worker I too am alarmed. My love & dillengent prayers go out to everyone affected. We need our goverments & its people to work together on this issue.Love one another & Pray.Use common sense here ,we will lick this ,share information and conquer it,Love to all.
With all the coverage and the 'pandemic' talk I have to wonder: Is it really just the 'FLU'? "The Stand" sounds about right. . . Every government ordering extra anti-viral meds, masks being passed out, thermal sensors in airports? Mexico city being shut completely down? Seems overly cautious. And 1300+ plus people hospitalized out of 2400 infected? That's an outrageous number . . . over 50% REQUIRE hospitalization? Government forced closure of fast food places? Must be VERY serious. . ..
Paola Alquicira is in critical condition because of a secondary infection -- pneumonia -- and not the flu itself. It may be that there have been a higher percentage of apparent deaths from this epidemic in Mexico than in the U.S. because of the prevalence of other pathogens in the environment where those people died, and/or the lack of prompt treatment for the early sufferers of the disease.

Incidentally, due to inadequate and broken down sewage disposal systems, one of the common pollutants in the air of Mexico is dried fecal matter. Definitely not a place to be when you're unusually susceptible to infection!
My heart goes out to the Mexican people.  I hope this pandemic will end soon.  They have enough troubles to deal with the drug war.  They didn't need this.
The funny thing about the US media is that they are missing stories right in our own borders.  I live in Texas in a small town between New Braunfels and San Antonio.  At least one confirmed case has been found here.  Both of our scholl district (14,00 kids), private schools, and  most day care centers, have been closed for two weeks.  The number one waterpark in the US will close this weekend. Another school district near San Antonio closed last week and remains closed after 3 cases were reported.  Hundreds of thousands of people are being affected by these closures.
Scaring people is not the issue- it's a concern for protection & reduction in illness.  I urge all to stay home as much as possible, & wash your hands often.  Read up about the flu pandemic in the early 1900's- we've all become too comfortable in believing the government or Dr.s can take care of us.. Use common sense.
There are five school closing in Milwaukee due to children having symtoms of the swine flu. One is in my neighborhood and two are about three miles away. There is one large school a block away from my home(not closed). My granddaughter attends this school. I picked her up yesterday from school and the it smell of disenfectant. This morning it smelled of disenfectant. Now I feel sick from the smell of disenfectant. I have asthma. So, now what, I'm I going to be sick from the virus or my asthma?
