In Mexico, ‘We can't touch her anymore’

MEXICO CITY – Almost two weeks ago Paola Alquicira woke up, complaining to her husband of a scratchy throat. As the day progressed, the young housewife felt even worse, but went about her normal day.

She dragged herself to an exercise class, called her mom once or twice and tried to keep pace with her 2-year-old daughter. By nightfall Paola was running a fever, had muscle and joint pain, and a runny nose. Although it was tough with a small toddler, Paola, 23, opted to stay in bed the next day, hoping to shake "la gripe," Spanish for the flu.

Instead, over the next two days her fever spiked and before the week ended she was hospitalized after an X-ray showed acute pneumonia. Her husband sent his small daughter to stay with relatives outside of Mexico City so he could keep vigil at his wife's bedside.

"She just would not get any better," said her husband Enrique, explaining that the family was baffled by her condition.

Then last Thursday, he learned the reason why.

His government disclosed that the nation was in the grips of a dangerous epidemic, that a new strain of deadly swine flu had been detected in the country.

With the help of the U.S. Center for Disease Control, Mexican scientists announced the discovery of H1N1, a bizarre new mix of pig, bird and human flu virus now frightening people across the globe.

Suspected to be present in 17 of Mexico's 31 states, the virus has killed more than 150 people and sickened another 2,400 here, while fast spreading to other places in the world. Every day health authorities announce hundreds of more suspected cases.

H1N1's preferred target is particularly worrisome.

Not just the usually vulnerable – children, elderly and people with compromised immune systems – are at risk. But, young previously healthy adults like Paola Alquicira turn out to be in particular danger.

Acting on that finding, health authorities placed the young woman in quarantine in Mexico's National Institute of Respiratory Illness over the weekend. Shortly afterwards, she fell into a coma as her lungs continued to fill with fluid and she struggled to breath.

Paola's husband spends day and night standing on the sidewalk outside the hospital, silently pacing among half a dozen other families. He stoically waits for late afternoon when he is issued a special ID that allows him to walk past the armed police guarding all three hospital entrances. Once behind the concrete walls, Enrique is given 30 minutes to steal a glance at his wife and speak with her doctor. He and their young daughter seem to have been spared infection.

But the moment authorities added Paola Alquicira's name to their list of patients suspected to be infected with H1N1, her parents were barred from her side for their own protection.

"My daughter is in grave condition and we can only see her through the glass," said her mother Alejandra, who too stands in the quiet street, her emotions just partially hidden by the hospital mask covering her mouth.

"We can't touch her anymore."

Not even to say goodbye, if the unthinkable were to happen.

Thanks for getting back to the "swine" flu issue. I hope Senator Specter does not get it, or we will have to hear more about him.  I put the word swine in quotes so I would not offend any Jews, Muslims or vegetarians.  With my lame attempts at sarcasm and joking aside, this flu business is serious indeed.  The main reason being is that it is on our borders.  And, that's the good side, because it will "force" us to work more closely with our neighbor Mexico on our mutual problems.  This obviously includes the drug wars that we are already working on together.  It is in some ways a blessing in disguise.  It is also a reminder that the most serious Homeland Security issues really are at home and not thousands of miles away in the mountainous wastes of Central Asia.
My Heart goes out to all the familys that have sick ones. Please know that you are being prayed for and hopefully they are able to make a vaccine befor it gets to bad.
I am sure that there are many mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and friends that are praying for those that have fallen ill with this illness. May God heal them all.
It is horrible all that is happening !! Its so scary to see the news everyday and this be the big story..my family is so nervous since we live in New Mexico and have so much family in Mexico..we can only hope for the best and trust in God !! Que Diosito me los bendiga a todos y seguiremos rezando para que todo pase..total..no hay mal de que bien no venga !!!!
Mary, thanks for this great writing. I'm unsure as to whether or not the media is blowing this whole thing out of proportion. Even if we're not personally impacted and even if it is not a pandemic, it is certainly having a huge effect on a wide number of individuals and families.

I feel so sorry for all of the Mexican, American and other foreign citizens across the globe with this rightening decease. I am a cacasion american male and I too wish that the politics of these types of conditions would play a back seat to the care and medical treatment needed by its citizens...now! Close the borders to travel from all lnown countries that have cases of this decease to lessen the potential of it spreading any further, just until it is under control. God bless each and every Mexican, American, Isreali and all other families with anyone sick from this flu. God help us all.
To all of those people helping us understand this virus I thank you. To all those who are being affected by it I pray for you!
The state of Utah sends many prayers to the Alquicira's Family and to other's that are suffering from this flu. May the lord have mercy. Amen.
I feel sympathy for the people who are sick with this swine flu and for the families of those who have died.  I just wish that in the USA the bigoted far-right pundits will stop saying on Fox news that this flu was brought to the US by illegal aliens.  It is untrue and shame on them to use this crisis to further their close-minded and mean-spitited agenda.
What affects more people at the moment?

A.) Swine Flu
B.) Mass Hysteria
To Mary Murray, NBC News Producer:
Mary I thank you and thanks NBC news for the story of illness that this maxican family went through. This epidemic disease can be any where in the world. But I think, science,  technology and the cooporations between different countries will be able to isolate   the disease. People will get sick and they will be cured, the question is your story touches the hearts of many people all over the world, and they will react to it. With our internet technology and the available communication facilities, individuals through out the world can talk to each other and exchange their feeling. So governmnets can not hide any thing like this any more, any where in the world. In a sense the world has become a one community and epedemic illness like H1N1 needs attention from every one. I thank and salut reporters like you who travel among the community of the word to report breaking news, facts and truth as they see it from their naked eyes every minutes of the day !!!
This is the exact reason why the border should be closed and remain closed!
I am curious as to where the media is getting their numbers, according to the WHO site as of yesterday:

The United States Government has reported 64 laboratory confirmed human cases, with no deaths. Mexico has reported 26 confirmed human cases of infection including seven deaths.

This is significantly lower than the media reports of 150 deaths and 2,400 cases. I'm sure these numbers are suspected cases, not confirmed.

I have a compromised immune system, a lot of my family does too.

I already have a going out in public worry some days.

There are days I have to go out, today being one of them.

I need a mask before I go.

That poor family, and now the family of the dead child  in this country. I feel so sad for all of them.

This could get bad, or it could be a press tornado.

I am not taking chances though.
Great job putting a face and name on this crisis. Uniquely American to refer to death as the unthinkable, instead of the inevitable.

Wash your hands alot and avoid crowds. If you get sick, even not knowing what it is, isolate yourself and stop kissing your family members. When you realize it is here is not the time to prepare; get ready now.
This is frightening because it's a new type of flu, but in perspective 36,000 people died last year from the regular flu. So far this is treatable with regular flu medication and there is supposed to be a vaccine developed in a few weeks. People who take precautions and don't usually get the flu will probably not get this either. We can't let panic take over. Let's hope that those who need help receive it, and that it will soon pass with the flu season.
I agree, this media frenzy reminds me of Stephen Kings book and TV movie, "The Stand". Also when I watch the news I am reminded of all the "B" movies about illness and gloom and doom.
I am sure within the next few days, the way things are going, we will see TV anchors with masks on.
Scaring people out of their wits is not an answer or a
solution.
Actually, the WHO director said that it would take almost a year to develop a vaccine and get it stockpiled for distribution.  My prayers go out to those impacted, which is all of us.
To all of you people who now want to blame the media, gripe about "scare" tactics, etc. Just shut up! The spread of information about things such as flus, needs to be done, in order to slow or contain the spread. The very fact you think this is a media problem points to the fact of how lucky we are to have rapid dissemination of crucial information these days, regardless of how scary or sensational it seems.
It really ticks me off that these people who have trips booked for Mexico in the near future, still can't make up their minds whether or not to go.  It should not be a choice.  Why travel their and take the chance of bringing it back to the US only to spread it more rapidly amongst innocent people???  That is not worth any money in the world spent on a wasted trip.  I would be more worried about my health and the health of others around me.
I know that the goverment could of done something about this earlier but like always they are slow to react and we are faced with another crisis. Why did we let them put us at risk?
This is not hysteria it is history repeating itself.  Please do your research, the 1918 flu which was also a mix of avian, pig and human virus killed more than 50 million people worldwide in virtually every country on earth.  It also killed young healthy people ages 5-50 like this one does.  It also had a mild phase in the spring with a few deaths and then mutated into a killer virus in the fall with thousands of deaths.  Because some authorities went into denial saying it was overblown and refused to cancel events or institute quarantines even more people got sick and died.  The clinics and morgues were overwhelmed, Drs and nurses were in short supply. Entire cities like SF and Philly were shut down. Someone needs to get the 1918 story out there RIGHT NOW so we can be prepared, not panicked, in case this happens in OCT just like it did in 1918 when the mortality rate jumped up as high as 20% (that's 1 in every 5 folks who got sick died, now that's something to get hysterical about).  I live in a place where huge sections of the city are a ghost town, so I am a Believer when it comes to disaster and EARY WARNINGS that should be heeded...
No one on Fox news is saying illegals have brought this to the U.S.  Several of the commentators have taken great care to point out that it is our own citizens as tourists who have brought this back.  In fact, Shephard Smith appeared rather disgusted with the Democratic senator from New York who was calling for closing the borders.  Smith argued with the Senator and accused him of using this issue to further his political agenda.
People are sheep. As long as the media can engender an environment of fear, whether from "terrorists" or from a new strain of virus, as long as it's a source of fear that people can't readily understand they'll huddle in the corner and allow anything the government wants. everyone is getting scared about this new virus but they're forgetting the numbers- it doesn't appear to be any more deadly than any other strain of influenza virus. In fact, as near as I can tell, it seems LESS so, given the number of infections versus the number of deaths attributed to it, and if you look up between different newspapers, news channels, and news sites you'll notice a distinct pattern that the same sources that were strongest on playing up the threat that terrorism meant to US citizens are the same ones that are now hyping the swine flu for all it's worth. Wake up, you're being manipulated. The last administration controlled through fear of terrorism, this one already has a nervous herd that are ready to toe the line for the government who "protects" them. All this administration has to do is declare a phase 6 pandemic, isolate everyone in their homes, and the country is paralyzed while the domestic takeover occurs. All dissidents are quietly removed from their homes, declared dead through the "epidemic" and all that remains are the frightened sheep who do anything they're told.
I'm still wondering why this seems to come as a surprise to people. The warnings have been around for years that with high populations in a dense area a virus could/would run rampent, as it has in the history of humanity. It's scary yes but it is also the nature of the beast. Hopefully scientist will get on top of it, or it will turn out to not be as bad as it seems.
Oh my the end of the world is here!  Come on people! How many die from other illnesses that don't get press like this?
Fact 2007 there were 1,644 deaths from Pneumonia and Influenza in the state of North Carolina.  Was North Carolina in the news? Oh 2006 1699 deaths, 2005 1820 deaths, 2004 1686 deaths, 2003 1988 deaths, 2002 1894 deaths need I continue?  Yes, 10,731 deaths over 6 years.  And 159 deaths now for Swine?  State of North Carolina has a death rate of 149 per month!
Come on chicken little

MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL THOSE AFFECTED,
Once again, the media is scaring the wits out of everyone! Remember SARS? I don't think it had that much attention. I think this flu has been out there for awhile and we haven't known about it.
MY BROTHER-IN-LAW SAYS THE OVER USE OF ANTI-BACTERIAL SPRAYS AND HAND WASH IS JUST THE SAME AFFECT AS OVER USE OF ANTI-BIODICS. I AM STILL GOING TO USE THE HAND WASH AND GLOVES IN PUBLIC. MONEY EXCHANGE IS A BIG DIRTY. LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR, EVEN IF IT IS ANOTHER COUNTRY. PRAY FOR ALL-TO YOUR GOD. I AM PRAYING FOR ALL
All of us out her in Albuquerque, NM, we pray for those that are sick from this flu and those who have lost some family members to this.  AMEN
Want a practical solution to increase your immune system to 437% and, counter attack the INFLUENZA no matter which name it is given HIN1, or H5N1 etc.

As horrible as it may sound, I really believe a pandemic is in our best interest. I say this because we should think about the present state of our environment and our future. We only have one Earth and human behavior is destroying it. We all know that the human population is growing unimpeded at an uncontrollable rate, rivers are becoming depleted, we hear about snow caps and ice glaciers melting at rates we have never seen before, we hear about global warming, we hear warnings about not having enough food to feed the coming generations, we hear about destruction of the forests, polluting and over fishing of the seas, we hear about the destruction to animal habitats bringing hundreds of species to or at extinction. What more do we need as proof that we are in danger of losing it all? Well my point is that a pandemic where millions die may actually be benefical and could possibly save the human race. I know this sounds like a horrible thought to some but what do you think?
'This is the exact reason why the border should be closed and remain closed!'

Marie, the majority of the US cases were brought in legally by Americans. You can't cloase a border against a virus.
This country will not continue to be a leader in any sense or form. The hate and racist voice of America will suffer the pain. If you accept it as part of life, than the swine flu is the answer. God will not forget you. history is not on your side. May God bless
Kind of puts worrying about $ into perspective. There are so many ways to suffer in this life. Why does it take impending disaster or fear of such too  get us to remember we are all clinging to the same hunk of rock hurtling through immeasurable space. Since there is no infallible security or safety, love and compassion for all are the only antidotes. Feed your mind with fear and you may end up like Dick Cheney . Work like heck to cultivate a mind/heart of peace and compassion and you could end up like the Dali Lama. You decide.
To the ignorants out there, please stop making racist comments! This was not brought by illegal aliens, what if it would've started here? would you like for the rest of the world to blame all the "yankees" no right! pray for all these families, pray for this country and the rest of the world!
respecting the many thoughts, concerns, and comments on the swine flu...being of mexican decent and having family living there..ive seen not only its beauty but also its disaster..its not about border control or putting blame on illegals for such things...mexico as its duty to its people fails to provide any good quality medical, housing, or govermental values. USA provides alot of great benefits to an american that we can just walk-in to a clinic and get the help needed with medicare/medicaid and such programs...my thought is if mexico provided atleast half the benefits to its country this swine flu wouldnt be as deadly...people need to open their minds up and realize our country is doin its best in keeping us afloat while other countries have suffered greatly.. god bless all those who are ill and watch over all our people of any country race religion thru any hardships that may befall in the future
Amy,

You are right about thousands who die from normal flu, but you are wrong about the vaccine. It will be 4 - 6 MONTHs before the vaccine is ready. The current death toll is not alarming. It is the possible death toll and that it isn't just picking off the weak, it's taking down the young and healthy as well. If regular flu medicine is "working", why are more than 150 dead?
What does this virus have to do with illegal immigrants. We all sneeze and cough the same way and breath the same way. So please be open minded don't show your ignorance. May God bless all the sick and all of us, no matter what race, origin or religion you are.
I dont understand why some people are using this flu outbreak to push a racist political agenda. Most of the people who are infected in the United states are infected because they legally went to mexico for  vacation or came in contact with someone who has been to mexico. Some people are acting like some illegal alien came through the border and exposed united states citizens to the flu.
I knew sooner or later these plagues would fall upon the earth. Not because I'm the smartest or can predict the future. I'm just an average woman who opens her Bible. Prophecy is unveiling at an alarming pace. We have put God on the back burner and these are the consequences. I pray for all who are ill and their families, may the Lord comfort and give them peace and strength. Open your Bibles!! Don't leave earth without HIM.
Don't waste time on the mask...the germs you would get are small enough to pass through it. Besides, it's not airtight. OK, if it helps make you "feel" better, wear it, but don't depend on it to keep you from getting sick.
the silly comment about the boarder needing to be closed....How about asian flu? How about deer tick which has cripled my nephew? He likely got it hunting in Kentucky. Close the boarder? How about the nearly weekly exposures to bad food processed in the USA? Close the boarder? Life is not so simple and hasn't been since the Europeans came to the new world and killed off the indigenous peoples of the new world. I don't blame those settlers. They were ignorant of what they were doing. However, it is an illustration of how stupid and simplistic is the statement: "close the boarder."
I just spent 15 days working with some people who came in from Italy. They went to the airport dreading the questions and inspections they would have to face upon returning home from the USA where the flu was spreading from California. Maybe Italy should close their boarders and not allow them back. How stupid can some people be?
This will not be the last of the new viruses. With all the cloning and medication of animals we have done, they likely have very little resistance to anything anymore. And we Americans, feed on drugs since birth and weakened more and more by our addictions are even more likely to face more and more challenges to the ever changing structure of virus.
oh wow this is getting worse every day :-(
God Bless You All

we need to Pray every day

SEA
Enough already, this flu is behaving like any other flu. No worse, no better. People die of the flu EVERY DAY in this country, young and old. The media is simply out of control with the hype and the fear mongering. One could only hope that the media would be responsible and to quit feeding partial information and sound bites which serve to feed the mass hysteria. All indications are that this new flu might actually be milder than the regular influenza serotypes. To the people in the media QUIT IT, YOU ARE NOT HELPING! YOU ARE MAKING A "CONCERNING" SITUATION INTO A PSEUDO ARMAGEDON, ITS STUPID AND DETRIMENTAL TO THE NATION. BTW Sanjay Gupta is a great communicator of medical news but he is a neurosurgeon, probably the last doctor you would consult for an infectious disease issue. Also, surgical masks are useless only N95 masks would be marginally "effective" and no one wants to wear one of those more than a few minutes ergo don't wear anything Simply wash your hands often and stay away from sick people, if you are sick, stay home JUST LIKE YOU SHOULD FOR THE "REGULAR" FLU  .
Again, STOP IT!!!!!!!
Edgar Betancourt, MD CAP, ASCP
Common Sense Precautions: go get a flu shot, wash your hands frequently, don't run yourself down right now, and stay home & rest if you feel you are getting sick. "AKA" the same common sense stuff we all already ought to be doing!
We should learn lessons from other nations on Isolationism though.  Sealing off the borders is not the answer.  Interesting that a known TB infected person traveled and returned to the US and we heard nothing more about this criminal who took chances of spreading this deadly disease.  Funny how when it is Mexico, people want to seal the borders.  If it was form Europe or Austrailia, I wonder if it would be different.
hopefully they are able to make a vaccine befor it gets to bad.
From Sonyia Griffin, Bandon, Oregon

They will not, the world is going to be slow to react, like the aids?

many will die before this is over, Every man for himself, dont hope for a vaccine its not going to be created until many died.
