Inside the Taliban's 'grave error'

ISLAMABAD – After weeks of consolidating their control over large areas of the Northwest Frontier Province, the Taliban are in retreat.

On Friday, Maulana Fazullah, the firebrand Taliban boss in the Swat Valley, ordered his most trusted military chief, Commander Fateh, to leave Buner, a neighboring valley that Fateh seized on Monday.

The Pakistani authorities warned the militants on Thursday that they were ready to remove them by force if they did not lay down their arms and abide by a peace agreement hammered out in February.

According to the deal, the government ceded power to the Taliban in the Swat Valley and allowed them to impose Islamic law in the area in return for a cease-fire – ending two years of on and off military operations there.

But last weekend at a large gathering of supporters in the valley, the Taliban announced they would not lay down their arms and openly challenged the state. They declared that democracy was un-Islamic and called for harsh Islamic laws, known as sharia, to replace Pakistan’s constitution.

The next day, they began their advance into Buner. That valley’s proximity to the capital, Islamabad, just 70 miles and a five-hour drive away, sounded alarm bells in Washington.

A step too far

"The Taliban finally made a grave error," said Javed Siddiq, editor of the influential Urdu language daily Nawa-e-Waqt.  "Once they challenged Pakistan’s constitution as un-Islamic, Islamic scholars and the Pakistani people no longer saw them as the self-styled defenders of Islam against western infidels – but infidels themselves who want to dismantle the Pakistani state."

Siddiq said that challenging the constitution was a wrong step and believes it has backfired. Pakistan’s constitution was carefully forged by a board of Islamic scholars in 1973 – every tenet was crafted to make sure it conformed to the principals of Islam.

"Now, all the different sects of the Sunni and Shiite, the religious scholars, the army, the politicians and every Pakistani is against the Taliban," Siddiq said. "They have lost."

The Taliban were quick to sense their blunder and the resulting sea change in the country. "The expansion into Buner was the turning point," said Siddiq.

‘No ordinary Taliban commander’
It was soon after the Taliban signed the February peace agreement with the Pakistani government that Commander Fateh began to plan the militants’ move into Buner.

"I saw Swat as an opening for us," Fateh told NBC News in a recent interview. "I knew if I planned well, we would be able to advance little by little, hopefully in a peaceful way, and gradually enforce Islam in the valley."

Fateh, a 33-year-old native of Swat, rose up through the ranks of Taliban fighters after almost 15 years of fighting in Afghanistan. The somber-looking commander, who is married with three sons, is considered to be an accomplished military strategist, often brilliant in battle, according to Taliban commanders in the region.

With the bearing of a de-facto prince exacting homage from his subjects, Fateh, whose name means victorious in Urdu, rode into Buner last Monday in the back seat of a black Toyota pick-up truck. Taliban fighters flanked his vehicle and brandished Kalashnikovs at the throngs of locals who had come out to catch a glimpse of him.

Fateh was meticulously turned out in a silky black turban that hung low on his clean, pressed tunic. He wore expensive-looking light brown leather ankle boots, and his long black beard gave off a heady smell of musk-scented oil in the afternoon sun.

"This was no ordinary Taliban commander," said an NBC cameraman, who caught up with Fateh in Buner.  "Most of them are scruffy. This guy was different. I wanted to ask him where he got his shoes."

Blazing a path of fear
Fateh’s plan was to peacefully take Buner with 800 Taliban fighters. After consulting with Fazullah and a council of elders, Fateh and his men drove the 25 miles from Swat to Buner in a convoy of cars, pick-up trucks and mini-buses. Fateh ordered a few hundred men to walk over the mountains and prepare for meeting the Pakistani army along the way, but they encountered no resistance.

"I always try to take control without firing a single shot," Fateh said outside the villa of a wealthy Buner businessman that became his military headquarters just hours after arriving in Buner. "My orders to my men are first and foremost, try not to kill."

Fateh easily forced a truce with the tribal elders and sent home some of his men. He then gave NBC News a tour of the area to show that the local people were with the Taliban.

"We prefer the sharia law that the Taliban have brought to us because it provides speedy justice and no one demands money from us," said Sultan Mehmud, a shopkeeper in Buner.

"Before, we would have to go into debt hiring corrupt government lawyers to defend us, and we never received any justice," he said, albeit haltingly, obviously terrified to say anything against the Taliban.

The Taliban have consistently beheaded those who do not conform to their rules – which include outlawing music and forbidding men to shave their beards – and have torched schools and government buildings in their path.

Less than 1 million people live in Buner, an impoverished valley in the Malakand Division of the Northwest Frontier Province. But Buner has huge strategic importance because it borders seven other districts, enabling the Taliban to easily spread their influence.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen told NBC News in an interview broadcast on Friday that he is extremely concerned about indications that the Taliban are moving closer to Islamabad.

Army threat
Pakistan’s army commanders have repeatedly said that the army is ready to go back in to push back the militants – whose numbers in Swat alone are estimated to be close to 10,000. On Friday, they deployed around Buner to secure government installations, but so far they have not received any orders from the civilian government to launch a military operation.

In a strongly worded statement, Pakistan’s army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, warned Friday that no one should mistake a pause in military operations as a concession to the militants.

"The army is determined to root out the menace of terrorism from the society," Kayani said in the statement.  "It will not allow the militants to dictate terms to the government or impose their way of life on the civil society of Pakistan."

A Pakistani army officer, who asked to remain anonymous because he is not authorized to speak to the media, said Kayani’s statement was directed at the politicians who are criticizing the army and at Western voices who are describing a doomsday scenario for Pakistan. "The chief’s statement was basically a ‘shut-up’ call," he said.

NBC News’ Fakhar Rehman in Islamabad contributed to this report.

Corruption and ineffective leadership by the Pakistani government allows the Taliban to gain influence and authority in these impoverished regions of Pakistan. The Taliban hold the high card and staying power in any long term military solution. Low military intensity and terrorist tactics will pevail. The goal is establishing an honest, reliable regional government trusted by the people to solve their problems. The government plan should include respect for the culture and Islamic traditions of that region while protecting people from the extreme fanatical thugs.
Anyone attempting to draw a parallel between right-wing christianity in our country and Islamic fundamentalism is just a brainwashed idiot.

Come back when suicide bombings and beheadings become a way of life in  your town.

"Show me an anti-religious man and I will show you someone who is still rebelling against his father." GROW UP!!

Oh I'm sorry - am I UPSETTING YOU???
Hey Lee Miller from Texas,  It was found in the Old Testament of the Bible.  Please get your parts of the Bible correct!
I agree with everthing said by Ray,above.  Commenting only on fighting in Afghanistan, If the large, well trained and brutal Soviet Army, one the US Army was glad it never had to face on a battle field, could not achieve victory in Afghanistan then it probably can't be done.
I remember a time in this country when those funny people, who wore turbans and ate goat meat, were half-way around the world and posed no threat to us.  But that was when the world was still so much larger than it is today and our sense of security was masked by nothing more than our own inability to foresee  hypothetical situations come to fruition.  Enter Globalization and fast-track politics; secret alliances with unstable constituents in hopes they will unseat our rivals in their part of the world, whereby we can keep our own hands clean of messy events, and we are left with nothing more than more hypothetical situations to digest and/or ignore. Remember that the United States once had strong ties with Saddam Hussein and Mr. Noriega.  When they finished serving our purpose WE were quick to condemn them and sentence them to death and prison.  Having whored ourselves out to anyone and everyone who will fight for our cause we now awaken and wonder why there are so many people in this world who hate us for what we are.
These guys have been fighting for hundreds of years. I don't know what we hope to acheive with Islamics fighting Islamics. At the end of the day, they all hate the U.S. Lets pack it in and go home. Maybe they will kill each other and forget about the U.S.
Taliban is after power. Whether it is islamic law or devil's law they are terrorists. Zardari failed in stopping terrorism... not only that.... he didn't even put a resistance to advancing militants.

A dog like Zardari can only bark. This dog is trained and fed by Taliban to bark on Taliban itself  .. to put a show to the rest of the World.

Zardari cuts a ransom with Taliban to give Taliban the weapons ....and he will even give the nuclear weapons of this terrorist nation to Taliban.

Religion or Islam has to do nothing here. The spoiled corrupt nation don't even know what human rights are. How could they know Islam rights? (Islam means peace).

What other proof is needed to realize that Pakistan is the terrorist capital of the world.

Taliban goal is not Islam!! They stop all kind of basşc hunman enjoyment. Their failure means great to them. Fact is, they will!
Humans even each Pashtun born free in this world. But in sittuations like this each Pashtun is born a slave. Taliban is acting like a dog of Arabia or Iran. Religious fanatics will destroy not build the world. Freedom may rule all over the globe. Not Atoms but humans make this world reasonable. All together against corruption and terrorsim. Good humans live long.
Pashtuns must give an end to their Taliban to use relegion for politic outcomes. Religion is humanism. So simple!!!! Don't fool the world please. Each Pashtun must value his and other human lives. Please.
Ray Manhattan, I think you are not reasonable person! A non itegreated nation means a corrupt nation. And danger for all. Afghans are non-integrated because of Pashtuns. Who the hell these Pashtuns are to neglect Tajeks, Uzbeks and Hazaras? If so, no American no Australian is allowed to live on lands which they live today! Think a bit. Pashtuns misuse religion. and it is pity that humans still can be dodged on behalf of religions!
Today, my brain says a third non-human, non-earth force is needed to ake us all Humans. We humans are the ones who should be kicked out of this planet because we are destroying it.
In Pakistan, no one is Pakistani. At the end, what you realize will be the fact that a corrupt nation has no place on this planet. Didn't Islam teach us to be Humans. Not the killers of Innocent Humans!!!!
OK here is the realdeal, Zardari wants money from US, this Taliban is all a show to create an emergency so US comes running in and write some blank cheks to Pakistan just like they have always done.
YOU ROCK David of Baltimore!
Ditto!  FREEDOM COMES AT A PRICE!
A soldier's job is to fight. That's what he or she is paid for. All soldiers against taliban must respect their jobs. A Talib is never right. Keep it in your minds. Enslaving nations, Enslaving children, stopping children from laughs, stopping humans from sports is not JUST!!! Why can't we fight against such inhuman forces??? Pshtuns must stop this madness. Because world knows now what they are fighting for. It is not Islam.
I don't know much, but I know this for SURE: people who ban all music are BAD people. Think about it- music is the ONE THING that crosses all borders, races, religions, and ages. It can only be good- and the Taliban fear it enough to want to wipe it out.
i agree with Ray, in our part of the world, things are different, life is different. Imagine if a muslim state would try and interfear in US policies about whatever they do, say for e.g. telling them that they need to shut down the clubs and bars and stop drinking alcohol. How would that sound to a non islamist? the point is, respect all religions and dont force anything on others. If Pakistan wants to set up islamic laws and sharia, it has every right to do so being a islamic state, but not at the expense of the taliban rule. Talibans are not even muslims, i would classify them as one, our religion teaches us the message of peace and love and not suicide bombs and disrespect to humanity. U can also not compare pakistan to afghanistan, u cant put them in the same basket, pakistan is way more developed then Afghanistan and it has potential to do a lot more, which offcourse a lot of other states dont want, due to their interest in the region.
What is happening with Pakistan is only part of the picture of the war to come.  Normally I wouldn't support wiping out entire populations but when you have a corrupt failing nation state such as this and the other option for rule is one that brings Islam back to the dark ages while threatening to annihilate the rest of the civilized world something very severe has to be done.  If we don't step up and finish the hair brained war that Bush fought by committing every resource to the utter destruction of this islamo fascist ideology and every person who supports it, it will be only a matter of time before we are surrendering to fascism in our country although it may not be based on perverse religious doctrines.  With the way Obama is going, is he going to try and negotiate with the Taleban and Al qaeda since he prefers to label the political opposition as a more dire political threat?  And once Obama has negotiated a peace with these threats to humanity, how long will it be before he abandons Israeli freedom in favoring of appeasing terrorists who will only want more blood?  Pay attention people and read the words of your leaders very carefully, it portends what they are prepared to do.
There is no room in this world for relegiuos extremist who try to impose their will on other people.
Ofcourse Florida and bible states are the exception lol sad but true.
I say that living in Florida
I agree with Ray Manhattan. Let the men from the Middle East mold themselves, and just prevent the terrorists from
a) commiting another 9/11
b) getting a nuclear bomb
Where is Ghengis Khan when you need him?
It's about time we started to mind our own business. Bring all our troops home  where they belong. Our country needs all the help it can get. Were falling apart here. Fight the corruption that exist within . It is all around us . Shape up America befor it's to late.
I have changed my name to Yahya Yusuf abu Yeshua in preparation for the Taliban takeover of the USA.  Now that we have a Muslim friendly administration, it is only a matter of time.  You may scoff, infidels, but you heard it here first.
It's about time we started to mind our own business. Bring all our troops home  where they belong. Our country needs all the help it can get. Were falling apart here. Fight the corruption that exist within . It is all around us . Shape up America befor it's to late.
In every murder there is a motivation. So before we try to look at the culprits we should look at the country which will gain the most out of all this. Which country has the strongest desire to become the next superpower once US falls financially and militarily. There is only one country which fits the bill, China. They have all the motivation. They border the region and have built roads into Pakistan. They have already made deals with the people of that area that you do whatever you do, we do not care but do not spread Islam in China. If you do that China will very harshly suppress you. The moral of the story is that we are not fighting Taliban and Al Quida but we are fighting a proxy war with China who want to trounce us and emerge the next number one super power. Russians also would like to try, obviously they have an old score to settle. Economically though their dreams of superpower are so remote that they have to improve a lot on that front.
Isn't it ironic that everything is comming full circle? The U.S. and the Pakistani government helped arm and train these fanatics to fight and kill Soviet troops and are now eating the bread that the devil kneaded.
Perhaps those of you who think that Christian values have no place in society should take your athiest views to Pakistan and see just how much tollerance you receive.  This country was founded on Christian prinicples and they have served us very well.  Nowhere in the world will you find greater progress of all people. Our founding fathers were deeply religious yet chose not to endorse a specific religion.  Your right to express your anti-religious views do not preclude me from desiring a society based on Christian values as it was for 200 years.
I'm leaning towards agreeing with Ray in Manhattan, Kansas. [...and what a wonderfully concise pun and oxymoronic name for a town in our great Mid West...no offense intended, really..]
We don't belong in Asia. Asia has absorbed foreigners for as long as we know that foreigners have been seen there.  However, if we can keep those barbaric Islamists contained in as small an area as possible, it will enhance our security; I'm for increased use of long distance, remotely controlled unmanned aircraft for surveillance and hitting nuclear targets. Asia is no place for massed foreign troops. Let them kill each other, we can't prevent that. Silly to think centuries of hatred will be cured by American "aid" and do-good-ism.
Additionally, we Americans must get over this media-supported concept of our "popularity" abroad. What a waste of time.  "Charisma" is the shallowest possible aspect of any real leader.   Politicians: take careful note, if possible.
Saw the documenary style Movie "War & Peace" about Indian & Pakistan A bombs. Made by a film group from both India & Pakistan. the Pakistans referred to it in the documenary film as the "Muslim bomb".  They also interviewed workers at a Pakistan laundry. They had a map of the world colored green which represented the world when everyone was a Muslim.  I don't think a "frank discussion" with them & "group hug" is going to make them change their ways. Something to ponder.  Remember 9-11 & Mumbai.  Wish it was different, but it isn't.
I am shocked at how easily NBC has been bamboozled.  you fools!  that wasn't a "grave error".  the taliban has just proven that they can move where they want with impunity!  they know that the pakistan army will do little to stop them.    and to ray manhattan in kansas:  you have absolutely hit the nail on the head!    why are the politicians in washington (and probably most of the generals) blind to it all!
Gee, that's funny. I thought we defeated the Taliban several years ago. If President Moron hadn't dropped the ball in Afghanistan and allowed Bin Laden to escape, maybe we wouldn't be having this problem now.
All religious people but most especially Muslim fanatics think that the problem with society is that people are not religious enough.  But the more religious a society is, the more backward and the more repressive. Pakistan, Saudi and Afghanistan are already way way more religious than say China, Japan.  But the religious states are so much worse in every way, even when there is money such as in Saudi Arabia.
To everybody, I will not sit here and condone ANY use of ANY God to justify violence or murder. Those that hided behind religion to validate murder really need to go back and re-read their individual texts. I sit here and read these thoughts of people from all cross sections of life, right wrong or indifferent and feel like I am doing my job, because you all write freely what you feel, quick to critisize the government or the military, without fear. There ain't many places to do that in Swat right now.
I am sickened to hear that America is the root of all the worlds problems, but it is interesting to read all of these texts and never see any solution offered by the same writers. If America is so evil, so inherently bad, and it is the fault of our leaders, then it is the fault of it's citizens, who have failed to choose to educate themselves, not only on the what, but also on the why's that this country was created for. Blame Bush, Blame Cheney or Rumsfeld or whoever you want to blame, they are men, and made the best decisions that they could with the information they had. Obama is doing the same thing. I know that this will never get approved to post because it is too logical and there is no name calling, but I hope it does- From a servicemember
First of all I want to say that I support our armed forces.. That being said, we are wearing ourselves thin fighting these wars… We should increase the pay of our soldiers, to help our unemployed enlist in the fight. We need to increase our numbers to sustain these conflicts. We should go back to what we do best.  Shock and Awe. The taliban and al qaeda will only bow down through force… Diplomacy will not work with these people who only want world domination. Yes there will be casualties but as we know, another Vietnam will not work.  We Americans want results. We do not do well with mediocrity.  We lose interest and we lose support. I know that if we went in to Afghanistan with a sustained overwhelming force, we would be victorious.  All the UN would have to do is give us a green light and our men and women of the armed forces would get the job done.  The problem I see is not enough resources (soldiers and equipment) allocated to get the job done. We are the freakin US of A.  The last SUPERPOWER..  Given our full resources and attention, the Afghans should be free already to decide their own fate, if freedom is what they want. Now if they do not want freedom, we should not be there to begin with. Same goes for Iraq. Those people need to WANT to have a democratic society, because there is no amount of bombs that will make them change their mind if they don’t. Back to Shock and Awe, no one does it better than we do. Against a sustained OVERWHELMING force, our enemies and those of Afghanistan and Iraq would be able to do nothing but despair. If WE cant promise to give 100% to the war effort, than maybe we should step aside and let another country take lead.
So many defeatists crying, get out, run, and let them be, fix the United States because it is causing all of the evil in the world. This would all be fine and dandy if we had another planet to go to.  If and when you wake up, see past your own front porch and accept the enormous responsibility we, the United States of America have as the leaders in free world, then and only then will you be able to contribute to the concerns we have within our own country and our responsibilities abroad.
Live and Let Die, if you really don't like them why are they still around. Bullcrap, Shame on Pakistan in the first place. They get away with what Pakistan allows them too. Until it interferes with their agenda, like a dysfunctional family lol. Let it be their problem. When Mommy and Daddy have enough they will get rid of them.
The only way to deal with the Taliban or al qaeda is extermination or leave them alone. As the Americans can not mined their  own business that only leaves extermination. What part of this do you not understand?
How the number of militants increased in the area? From where do they get weapons of the latest technology, & new vehicles? From where the money comes? Who is sponsoring them? All their actions are un-islamic & they are fooling around with our innocent masses . Why the government of Pakistan let them to establish their huge villas & fortress???Where was the Army when they were running their own FM radio, chopping innocent people, & destroying Schools and colleges? What is the job of The Army of The Pakistan, who is taking away more than 65% of the budget of the country??
Well said Ray Manhattan, why USA desires to re-make Muslim society to its liking?
As far as political side is concerned, I as a Pakistani will not let down any person/party that stands against a pro-Indian regime in Afghanistan, may it be Taliban or any body else. So if US desires Taliban to surrender, better get Indian influence out from Afghanistan (and better from the reigon). People of USA, you thank God you dont have a neighbor like India that has been a pain in a neck for all its neughbors, you name any one China, Banladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka..... Please pray for all neighbors of India.
My God, the depth of ignorance and short sightedness of the majority of posts here is just mind boggling.  Those of you who believe that the U.S. is to blame for what's going on in that region, or that the U.S. should just turn their backs and walk away from that nuclear-armed country are completely out of touch with reality.  The biggest threat to security in the region would be to do nothing about the Taliban and their partners, Al Queda, in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  This isn't Charlie Wilson's war any more; if you dumb asses can't understand that even the threat of Taliban control of nuclear arms can't be tolerated, because the alternative would probably be a REAL war involving many more countries than just the U.S., it's time you got your head out of your posteriers, and tried using even some of the 10 percent of your brain they say most humans use. Fat chance of that.
No, it is NOT time to bug out of there. It can be done, if you recall, the Soviets only started taking a beating when the US started supplying them w/ Stinger missles, SF advisors, and CASH. Otherwise, Russia would have won. The real problem is PAK, where they live, train, with impunity. Only a military coup, [Kayani] will save PAK. The army does not listen to Zadari, they listen to thier Corps commanders and they listen to Kayani. Striking targets inside PAK with manned warplanes is way overdue. We cannot make A-stan safe with one hand tied behind our back. Sound familiar? It should. Coz thats wat happened during Vietnam War. They just slid across the border, into Cambodia, Laos. Let us win.
Western Govt.s can kill whomever they want. But if they assasinate the militant organizers and leaders, and they know who they are, it's 2009, they f'in know who they are, have any of you even seen google earth? And that's the lame has been tech they let us play with!!! imagine what the spies have. No, Christian militants like the last admin and the pope and things like that, they know and are right that enough people will be swayed by the violence of militant muslims. It doesn't mean they will start going to church and donating to the cofers, but they won't be muslim!!!

This country was founded on equality of religion and labor, we don't bow to royalty on our own turf, But do so respectfully in another home. However, Bush Jr., feels it's necessary to roll out the red carpet for the Pope? The pope is a figure head for someone's personal beleif, He had no business on the White House lawn. What's scary is that someone beleives that saying something about the pope might land you in gods crosshairs, But in all likely hood, The pope is in god's crosshairs along with all other "clergy" for being free loaders. The pope has had no more connection or communication with god then any other human and he should have to contribute to the community with labor and humility, not a pointy fuckin hat.
No western power has ever defeated Afghanistan. Well we aren't trying to defeat afghanistan, just chump ass fighters from other countries. Oh, and it's not the people that defeated all those invaders, it was the terrain and lack of anything usefull. Why fight people when they have nothing.
Dave in NM & others are showing their ignorance.  They have absorbed the lie of certain liberals.  The Taliban is NOT conservative, let alone hypercondervative, by either the old meaning, or the meaning used by most conservatives today.  In the old meaning, conserve - ative meant people who wanted to conserve the old ways.  The Taliban doesn't want that.  For over a 1000 years Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived together, much of the time at peace, running the same businesses.  They want Sharia law -- NOT the old sharia'.  They want to require women to cover completely, and not learn how to read.  That's new since I was a child in the '60s (it was often in movies, but not normal back then unless you were going to be in the hot sun a lot).
Nor are the Taliban conservative in the usual sense:  less govt, more personal freedom.  They want total govt control.  This sounds like many modern falsely-called "Christian conservatives."
At least study occasionally about your subject so you will not look the fool.  When you open your mouth (that's in the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptures called Proverbs.
I think Pakistan is using taliban as weapon to extract Billion and Billions of $$ form us, why don't we use this free aid on our millitary take control over afghanistan pakistan border by lining our millitary and let india take care on their kashmir side. no free $$ no GDP, they will realise there's no free lunch and they will behave like atleast working humans rather then using terrorist as weapon to get free Billions of $$.
just don't understand why we offered free Billions even when they are forced to do more to control terrorism. we should reserve to enter pakistan only when chasing terrorist. why is pakistan blocking us to enter when we chase terroist entering pakistan, we are giving them free billions. THEY ARE FOOLING US AND USING TERRORISM AS WEAPON FOR FREE BILLIONS FROM US. WHY WHY AND WHY WE HAVE CREDIBLE EVIDENCE PAKISTAN'S INTER INTELLIGENCE AGENCY is well coneected with taliban....what's going on
I am aN engineering student from India, Pakistan's neighbour. Most of u have  missed 1 crucial point- Pakistan(under tutelage of Benazir Bhutto) Very decisively helped the Taliban and Al-Qaeda gain dominence by its intelligence agency ISI.It was, among other reasons, in return for d scores of Afghan,Arabic terrorists sent to our Kashmir to spread terror, bomb d markets, destroy lives. And it all went unabated, and d U.S ignored our calls till the same people broke your back.Right now, Kashmir is astoundingly peaceful, for they have got a new target-you, people of U.S.Bad for you, and us as well.Well,ISI sowed the seeds of medieval islam in madrasas of POK to bleed India out.And now, their own dragon has been set free.Yet, ISI still explicitly supports these outfits, gives sanctuary 2 wanted mafias of India.

If you Americans haven't got it yet,
TO DESTROY TALIBAN, YOU HAVE TO NEUTRALISE THE ISI.
I hope the Obama administration takes some explicit, tangible steps in that direction.
Thanks for opportunity to submit views.  I agree that subduing militant extremists through violence isn't the long-term answer, especially if it means ongoing, conscience numbing collateral damage to innocent civilians.

The Taliban has been coaching youngsters to live like militant martyrs.  In the long run, forcefully trying to subdue them might only strengthen their cause (against Western society). Americans don't wish to be subdued through violence, so why would we endeavor to  do likewise? Nevertheless, Pakistan with its unstable condition represents a potential worldwide threat should the Taliban take over.  We live in a global community.

How can we show a violent militant minority a better way than perpetual war?  "Three Cups of Tea" is an excellent and vital read that addresses this question.   Our hard earned tax dollars would be better earmarked for helping indigenous people in countries that accept our assistance--similiar to what Mr. Mortenson is doing. I assume that we are already doing this to a certain extent.

Rebuilding infrastructure will best communicate our sense of tolerance, our generosity and acceptance of various ethnicities.  Do we want other third world nations to genuinely succeed (employable work, decent living conditions)?  Or do we just wish to subdue them so they won't be any trouble to our national security interests?  These are the tough questions we need to ask ourselves.

The humanitarian potential of our own military should be expanded.  They could be helping to build roads and schools, medical centers, farms, wells, etc. for impoverished villages.  That would appear to be one of the wisest, and most peaceful investments in our collective global future.
I spent the last 4 years fighting these guys, when ut comes to tactics, they "hit it and quit".

Don't party to hard, the stories if their demise, are of course are hardly true, its their way of doing business. Please remember the Taliban and the USA where Bossom Buddies when they where fighting the Russians and then all of sudden they are these hard core terrorist.

Please remember they have never threaten a harmful act on American Soil.
While doing charity work in this region last year. I saw the Taliban Religous Orginization many times drop food off and Medical supplies to the very poor of that region.

These are good Godly Men-why bother the work of God, ever wonder why the USA is having a rough time-if you slap the Hand of God, you will pay, although Obam is repairing to a great extent the evil done by the BUSH/CHENEY Regime.
Is it me or does anyone else see the parallels between the Taliban and Nazi Germany just prior to WWII? Hitler kept advancing and promising he would not go any further while the world appeased him.
Aamir... Islamic law is already part of Pakistani society as evidenced by the Islamic overtones in their constitution. Letting a rogue faction of radical Islam enforce their will on the public through brutality and deception is internationally and domestically unacceptable. If the Taliban take control of nuclear armed Pakistan they'll have a platform on which to attempt to enforce their radical will on the world. If this were to happen, there's a good chance that the utlimate result would be invasion by an international force (U.N.) or nuclear war with neighboring nuclear powers. You see, the Taliban is looking to advance their agenda which is most certainly imposing Sharia worldwide. You handle your domestic issues how you please. Just keep in mind that when those views begin to affect other civilizations, it's going to get ugly and you will lose.
Wow Ray What a brilliant analysis, let's leave and let them determine their own destiny.  Even if that destiny is the use of nuclear weapons that they seize in a Gov't take over.  Ray you should be  Secretary of State your diplomacy tactics are amazing.  Well then again I sincerly doubt that the corn in Kansas is in any jepordy of a nuclear attack.  It must be wonderful to be so blissfully naive to sit back and hate American policy just because it is en vogue (Ray that means The prevailing fashion, practice, or style.  Get a clue Ray the policies you are critiquing with your brilliant analysis have kept you safe for more that a few years...guess maybe you should have come to Manhattan and smelled the smell of 3000 dead on 9/11 and still to this day.
you know what the problem is , we cant alow  the taliban or al Qauda acess to pakisan nuclear weapons,it would be a real disater to everyone nothing else realy matters ,the other issues can wait
