Taliban-style justice for alleged U.S. spies

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – "I was given $122 to drop chips wrapped in cigarette paper at al-Qaida and Taliban houses," confessed 19-year-old Habibur Rehman, just before the Taliban shot him dead for spying for the United States. "If I was successful, I was told, I would be given thousands of dollars," he said.

In a video released last week by the Taliban as a warning to other would-be spies, Rehman recounted how he was recruited to spy on the Taliban in North Waziristan and drop small transmitter chips on specific targets to call in CIA pilotless drone aircraft.

"I thought this was a very easy job," Rehman said in the video before he was killed. "The money was good so I started throwing the chips all over. I knew people were dying because of what I was doing, but I needed the money."

VIDEO: Alleged Taliban spy confession

The chips transmit a signal to a satellite overhead. The drones, armed with Hellfire missiles, are controlled and remotely piloted by the CIA in the United States, according to Pakistani and western military analysts. Once the signal is received, the drone takes off from Shamsi air base in southwestern Pakistan and collects data and intelligence to attack the chosen Taliban and al-Qaida target.

A U.S. official, who spoke to NBC News on the condition of anonymity about the Taliban allegation said, "People should recognize this for what it is … extremist propaganda."

President Barack Obama has stated that he considers the drone program an effective tool to target al-Qaida sanctuaries in Pakistan’s tribal areas along the mountainous border with Afghanistan. Nine out of 20 wanted al-Qaida operatives, who were on a list drawn up by U.S. official last year, have been killed by drones using intelligence provided from chips planted by Pakistani and Afghan tribesmen working as spies.

Taliban says on to strategy
The top Taliban leaders believe they now have successfully infiltrated many of the spy networks operated by the U.S. and Pakistani military in North and South Waziristan – but not all.

"We used to watch these planes, but we had no idea they were chasing us and taking pictures of our activities," said a senior Taliban commander in North Waziristan, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"In the early days of our jihad, our training camps were visible and people would come and go. We were not so concerned about the security of our locations, but that is all changed now. We abandoned all our old camps and re-located to new places," he explained.

The commander, who is close to Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a top Taliban boss in North Waziristan, said that 40 training camps have been moved because their Afghan friends, working for the Americans in Afghanistan, tipped them off about planned U.S. attacks.

"They told us the Americans had gotten pictures of our whereabouts and of our training houses and were planning to attack us through these unmanned planes," the commander said.

The commander said that once the Taliban had foiled their original plans, the Americans started paying Pakistani and Afghan citizens to identify their secret locations.

Taliban-style justice
"Finally, with the help of our sources in the Pakistani and Afghan intelligence agencies, we detained two Afghan tribesmen, who after five days of interrogation by our men, confessed to spying for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. They revealed other names and then we knew there were entire networks of spies operating in our areas," he said.

"Finally we busted one network of spies after another," the commander said and named some Taliban militants in their ranks who were operating as Western agents.

"Mullah Omar recently outlawed beheading of these traitors," the commander added. "Now we shoot them with AK-47 rifles, but only after we are sure of the charges against them."

A senior government official in North Waziristan, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared for his life, said the Taliban have recently executed more than 100 alleged spies in North Waziristan.

Mohammed Nasir, who owns a general store in Miranshah, North Waziristan's main city, said that everyone is scared to death the Taliban will arrest them as spies.

"There is non-stop killing now of people accused of spying," said Nasir. "The government has no control – so the Taliban pick up people and try them in their secret courts. It is impossible to prove one’s innocence."

Before he was shot to death, Rehman said he did not know that he was spying for the United States, he just did it for the money. "I was told that if I could put a chip next to an Arab house, then I would get $12,000," he said.

Courtney Kube, NBC News Pentagon producer, contributed to this report.

It's sad that these guys got caught. May God bless them and protect the ones that haven't been caught.
Nice to know that my tax dollars spawned the taliban in the "war" against godless communists (aka Soviet Union and the Afghan Communist party) in Afghanistan and now support a Pakistani "govt" which actively is doing deals with them.
Over 100 killed as spies. So if your neighbor has a goat that you want just turn him in. The recent successes sound like the Salem witch trials and the famous denouncements of the Maosist. Ambitious Russians would turn others in during the Stalin days to protect themselves and prove their loyalty out of fear. Absolut power corrupts absolutly.. even those without authority.
A spy is a spy is a spy, however one slices it.
Pancho Villa outsmarted the US army for 11 months, and they eventually gave up!, who were the leaders of the expedition?? Joseph Pershing of world war one fame, and George Patton of world war two, its no wonder the mexicans worship the man.
This is propaganda, and MSNBC should be ashamed for spreading it.  Using words like "justice," and writing about how smart and successful these Taliban savages have become is ridiculous.  Certainly not good journalism.
When are people going to wake up and smell the giant pile of crap they continue to spew against the tactics used by our government to stop terrorists?  As Americans we are held to a "higher standard".  And just what have those higher standards given us?  Thousands of dead americans, civilian and military, africans, spanish, german, english, hell, name a country these psycopaths havent hit.  Why do we continue to bash our own governments efforts to get rid of these people instead of saying "Hey, do what ever the hell you need to do to stop them and stop them now."   Our new presidents policies are going to have the same outcome as the policies of Clinton, ingnore the problem til it sneaks up and bites us in the ass right in front of our faces.  Give me a break and how about moving into the REAL world where it isnt all as simple as these bleeding heart liberals make it out to be.
200 years ago, this country hung spies for treason. This is no different. All is fair in Love and War
After reading most replies I considered one remark
describing the terrorist spy as not showing signs of trauma  to be rather naive. The writer concluded the individual is not a  legitimate terrorist spy because eye movement and other indicators were normal. People do become numb and can continue ordinary behavior because their mind has knocked out aspects of a situation which they cannot accept and remain sane.
Maybe he had chips, maybe not, but he is definately interested in avoiding the Taliban. I don't perceive this conflict as being the most insidious in our country will face fundamentalists. Those Moslems responding to  radical politicians are also in the Far East. It is a time trusted formula, radical politics hides behind religious leadership to enforce domestic policty. The same pattern in Nazi Germany and unfortunately I have seen signs in front of churches  in West Virginia which decry inter racial relationships, Google Washington Post 2003 Senator Robert Byrd and read of his affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan. Senator John James Rockefeller dominates the media in the state and has never made a full financial disclosure to his constituents or the US Senate.  Both of these men are adept at manipulating the passions of a cowereing impoverished population who do not have the education or exposure to ask questions of their elected officials concerning bids, appointments and favoritism in state politics.Everone wonders why Rockefeller of W.Va. is on the Defense Committee, he has no record of service in the US Military as far as anyone knows and although he graduated from an Ivy League Institution his SAT/ACT scores were very very low. Rockefeller Foundation funds construction in W.Va. and Sen Rockefeller owns the construction company, Rockefeller's wife is on the Board of Directors of about six or seven of the states cultural and educational agencies collecting a paycheck. Does anyone believe she can really, honestly do all that work, some say her attendance is terrible. Forget Chips in Middle East-  We need some domestic scrutiny of  our  own national leadership by the institutions already in place. How much would it cost for a Super Team of Investigators to research highly profitable and cozy relationships between elected leadership and the public education, health care, transportation, hospitals, public broadcasting,
police and courts. If a Foundation such as Rockefellers offers grants and scholarships in many impact areas and the recipients go to work in his  home state where are  their loyalties, to the community or their benefactor? Ironically Senator John James Rockefeller is taking a tour of his home state, he will be in W.Va doing hospital tours! Most people wonder why, he is rumored to have made funds available for the construction of one hospital which badly needed equipment before adding more patients and stress to an obsolete hospital. Equipment first at hospital, then new wing. We need to focus on domestic issues with the same dedication as we have to foreign threats. We can do this without violence or
destabilizing our existing institutions, vote the buggers out.
war is hell on both sides because you never know how or when you will die. for instance in war there is no honor on niether side. just whoever fires first and lands a bullet in your face. period
The things that which people say the u.s.a. did was torture are the real threat to this society. The govt. Propaganda machine MSNBC,ABC,CBS,CNN, about 77% all the media is in the tank to lie and decive the average americain. Kieth oberman sickens me and should be in prison for treason,or worse. The ignorant followers of these networks are to stupid to see through their lies.

This dude is probably a trained suicide bomber who, instead of blowing himself up, "took one for the team" in this manner instead.

btw, whether we are humaine in our interagating tactics or not has no bearing on how terrorist treat their captives. That point has no place in the arguement of whether we should use certain tactics or not. These are animals who kill, maim and torture without a second thought.
Do you negotiate with a rabid dog?  Of course not! You shoot it dead.  There can be no rehabilitation of any dog who has rabies, although their puppies (who do not have rabies) can be saved from getting the disease.  Whether it's a rabid dog from the wilds of North Waziristan or from North Dakota, you shoot it.  The Taliban are the same.  There can be no negotiations, no second place finish in this war.  Taliban are dead men walking.  Their children may be rehabilitated, but only if they've not been consumed by the father's disease.  Then, they are Taliban, whether they're 47 or 17.
Can you imagine a world where the Greatest Generation settled for second place during WWII?  Today, we may be witnessing the birth of the Next-Greatest Generation.
Right on D.R.  waterboarding doesn't seem so bad.  But even the Taliban are relatively humane compared to the PolPot regime.  We should use the PolPot regime as our standard;
These is no "chip" with a battery small enough to be distributed in cigarette papers which could communicate the position. It is a pure fabrication. The alledged "spies" were innocent. Too bad.
Since the U.S. loves to advertise everything it does and how it does it, is it any wonder that these Middle Eastern terrorist groups would use this knowledge in their own propagandist ways?  Is their technology so sophisticated that they can detect these tracking chips that are randomly scattered in dust and dirt?  Give me a break!
leave it to NBC to once again publish that drones are based in Pakistan, this puts Pakistan in a tight situation, they need deniable plausability, but does NBC care?  No...
I’m so glad that we have a president that’s talking with Iran, Cuba, North Korea and all the peace loving countries in the world to let them know we just want to get along. It worked so well for Jimmy Carter, and that world was much safer then. We don’t need a Military to protect us, let’s get ride of all our weapons, I know evry one else will too. After all we build these weapons to pick a fight.
Boy it is so nice that everyone will just put down there arms. After all, the only reason WWI and WWII happened was because (the U.S.) were flexing our muscles and we tried to take over the world, right? I know Iran will love us, Russia will come to our aid should we need it. When the U.S. become a placid country, the world will be so safe, I’m so excited.
The world of Alice in Wonderland is just around the corner, Go for it Obama!!!!
I JUST WONDER IF THE BUSH/CHENEY TALIBAN FRIENDS ( OBAMA, OMAR, SAUDIA' KING'S)....ECT.... USED WATER BOARDING, BOXES WITH INSECTS, SLAMMING OF ONES HEAD AGAINST THE WALLS AND USED THE BUSH/CHENEY/YOO/RUMSFELD FIELD MANUAL.....
Pure Taliban propoganda to scare Afghans from working for the US and to inflate their own image of power and the threat they want people to percieve.
The taliban are feeling the heat, keep up the pressure on them, and maybe they will  kill themselves.
I don't see any of the Taliban torturing themselves. I am sure that all of these people that are beheaded, and however they are murdered are extremely tortured first of all. Everyone is a spy to the idiots or have done some unlawful by their version of Islam. My God when does this stuff stop? I say put them all together and let thme blow themselves up. My heart goes out to all who are in captive with these murderers. You know, there will be no mercy on the part of the Taliban for these poor women, children, men-only death will be theri relief. Good job Taliban-give yourselves a good pat on the back and may you have a nice hot ride to HELL!!
This guy is about has full of it has you can be.Are we supposed to be dumb enough to believe that this guy was "interagated" for five days by the Taliban? Hes
pretty composed for someone about to be excecuted.Maybe Obamas ideas are catching on.
I do not know any Taliban who came to the US to harm any of us; On the other hand, we have plenty of assets in their part of the world - and we are using them - to kill many of them; what a way to make friends in the world! An eye for an eye? Think again.
From what I read in the article, the fact that the drones are killing civilians must be due to the fact that these so called "Spies" are placing the chips no matter where just to earn the buck.  They really don't care if the USA looks bad from killing innocents.
This just shows the type of mentality that we are dealing with.  It's not loyalty for AlQaeda or any other movement.  It's who gives more.  People are so desperate that they'll do anything for a little money.
the people must know how we live in Occident, the confort of a house, the beauty on a clean body, the forests, the rivers, the wild animals, our cities, healh care, technology so they will compare how they live thanks to their anacronic islamic rules and the taliban and what they would get without such influence.
Wow, its disgusting how these poverty struck Afghans are being bribed and used for this type of work, shortly after they are killed. Its true that the U.S. feel that middle eastern/Afghan blood is cheap!

A.R.

How can you say that?  $12000 is one heck of a lot of money in a stone age society such as is found in waziristan, or anywhere else the Taliban hold "court".
The only way to destroy the Taliban is to make them irrelevant.

The way to destroy an enemy is to make him your friend.

The poor uneducated, indoctrinated people that form the bulk of the Taliban have been trained since childhood to hate the west and anyone with beliefs different from their own.

Destruction leads to more destruction.  I agree that we have to protect ourselves, but this is a tactical policy.  The long term strategic policy should be to help feed, educate and make more prosperous everyone in these areas that are used as recruiting grounds.  The average person in the northern tribal areas of Pakistan, and all of Afghanistan hate foreign intervention because it has almost always been hostile and destructive, of their lives, their ways of life, and their beliefs.

Killing people doesn’t bring peace, unless you totally break their will, or totally eliminate them;  helping people on the other hand………
i myself think that if your can torture someone and they give up their buddies after five days of beeing punched kicked burned shocked on different parts of the body i'd give up names hell yes i'd sell my mother out after that. So why is it so bad that we do it to them after a little water boarding they get a nice meal a nice bed a book to pray with and what every else they may need. But not over there the bad guys give a bullet and and not even a kiss good bye. SO WHATS WRONG WITH THIS STORY I SAY DO ON TO OTHERS AS THEY DO ON TO YOU, Torture them
Taliban are missing the boat on this one. They should have ordered the spies to place those transmitters next to the NATO camps, instead.
Will NYC - You made my point exactly.  If this poor guy was innocent, after 5 days of torture by the Taliban, they would say anything.  Even face death to get away from his captors.  People who are waterboarded would say anything to their captors to get them to stop.  How many were innocent?  How many were guilty?  Where are the statistics?  We are a people who are to BE the light on the hill; not fit in with all the rest of the terrorists on this earth.  I am talking about people who were at Guantanimo.
If you park van loaded w. explosives next to Oklahoma C. Federal building with intention to kill or "paint" the target to be bombed and people killed, you may expect the same justice be it in the USA or Afganistan. Many people forget Afgany "freedom fighters" (as p.Reagan would say) are defending their country against the mightiest empire. Many years back when I was in AFganistan experiencing appreciation Of Afganys for the U.S. military & financial help and for the Arabic manpower (coming in courtesy of CIA and Osama B.L.) against Soviet military, many Afganys were asking the q. if the U.S. doesn't want to switch chairs w. Soviets - in that case we would have to fight Americans, laughed Afganys - how prophetic~!
you use them as spies for killing people and then accuse the other party for punishing them if they are caught. hats of to u Americans.
TRACE TRAITORS WITHIN YOURSELVES..! As an old warrior take my advice, ALLWAYS LOOK FOR THE ENEMY WITHIN YOURSELVES, JUST LIKE IN STORY ABOVE.. Trace and see who put you in this situation (lost all of your jobs, houses and now you are in poverty) at first place..! Who cost you all these crises and trouble? Who is using you? Who is using your children and youth, for their own benefits? Who is really controlling you and your lives? Who is really, really behind the curtains? Who really manufacture all this deadly weapons in your own land? Where did all USA's money gone to? SUDDENLY disappeared when war started...! OLD TACTIC, IT DOES NOT FOOL ME..! You'll be surprise and really mad to yourselves, when you find out.. And will be another BIG turn in world's history..
GOD KNOWS THE BEST...
Wow!  Executed over 100 spies in just one area of the country.  Must be a well loved form of government to have so many traitors willing to risk life and limb for a payday!  And our government says that intelligence collection is difficult because it is hard to get the locals to turn on the Taliban out of fear for their lives.  I wonder which side is lying?
if you torture people enough you will get the answer you want but not the truth
The spy game is dirty and in fact it is very dirty. Just for a few bucks more they are prepared to do anything. Taliban is a menace undoubtedly bur we need not create more mess for killing the bigger menace. Eventually it is the people who suffer. Peopel who always have seen the worst that this civilization has thrown at them!
Honestly guys, we are busy making 'enemies' by what we are busy doing around the world. Lets face it, Taliban were not our enemies from the day go, neither did they threat US, so why are we going after them.
Neither was OBL our enemy, are we sure we didnt do one of similar 'acts' to piss them off to the extent that they came right into NY. Lets face it, what we now know we are doing, is making everybody in that region our enemy, and sooner or later they will hurt us.
So lets get off our high horse and stop making enemies by killing their families. We have no right to judge the world. Havnt we learnt a lesson in last 100 years
Even if it's propaganda, which I have doubts, that explains the rash of civilian deaths lately.  If he was dropping them like he says, then he deserved to die.  Thank you taliban for taking the US off the hook for all those deaths
Dear Americans, I think we screwed up! Yes we defeated the Russians in battlefield of Afghanistan, but we didn't settle down/ rehablitated muslim religious fighters there which included todays Taliban's parents (called Mujhadeen) and Osama-bin-Ladan (known as Arab fighters). So when we saw Russians bail out with their tails in their back, we also announced "Mission accomplished" and left Afghanistan.

Playing devils advocate,
1. Does "Al-Qaida" exist? After all we hear of it either on TV or internet as a virtual organization. The bloodshed we are slapping on 'Al-Qaida' can very well be done by our intelligence friends in 'every allied country". After-all CIA+ISI invented 'Afghan Mujhadeen", so we shouldnt be surprised to find Al-Qaida and now 'Taliban' to be a creation CIA+RAW+KHAD+ISI to push our political objectives into Russia, Iran and China!

2. See the Indian's are now tamed after 26/11 as they have allowed CIA/FBI access to RAW insiders, that they Indians didnt allow before this!

3. The only problem Obama government has is that we seem to have run out of money to play these "inteliigence games" and dont know how to get out of it!

Wish 'we' didnt start this dirty game of 'spooks'!
It is said that you become what you hate.  No doubt it is the hatred of the Taliban that has encouraged the US to become that which it hates.
This is the same moronic "intelligence" methodology that killed 1.3million, and counting, in Iraq and put 3000+ into Guantanamo Bay most of them just dirt poor villagers who were fingered because of a family feud or to make a bit of reward money. Where are they all now these "most dangerous of all?" the vast majority gone home to devastation not of their making. These sorts of screw-ups will always happen in unsophisticated tribal countries and it sickens me to listen to the ignorant try and justify this pathetic attempt to raise the "enemy" body count to satisfy US blood lust. Think of Lt.Calley in Vietnam think of the "School of the Americas" and its legacy in South America for the US fruit companies. The US doesn't care what is does around the world as long as its "interests" are looked after. And you try and destroy everyone who follows a similar policy in the name of their own "interests". For Gods sake stop and take a look at yourselves. You have squandered the vast goodwill and empathy we all around the world felt for you after 9/11. Read Blowback by the ex-US-intelligence operative written in the '80's. It should be your bible for Foreign Policy not the "I don't give a rats ass as long as we are OK and the military contractors are making a buck" policy. That only leads to more 9/11's. You think the "war on terror" has only been going on since 9/11? This "war on the rest of the world" has been going on since WW2 the only difference is that on 9/11 part of the world finally struck back.
To all of the bleeding hearts, It's them or us and that means you. Which do you prefer?
Im glad like us they make sure of the charges agaisnt them ---
I wonder if they show the same foolish mercy
How do you know this guy did any of this? The problem with torture, including when done by the US, is that you get unreliable information. People will name the names of innocents and confess to things they did not do, just to stop the pain.
You idiots that are so thrilled with waterboarding and other torture should ask what value it has returned. As many reports have now shown, it did no good at all, and probably caused us to to bomb innocent women and children.
Likewise with the Taliban. They are so paranoid that they are torturing and killing innocents.
This is why we hunt the Taliban. They are cruel, heartless animals that will torture their own to get info on more to torture. We should understand, in their minds, if you are not with us then you are against us. There is no informed middle ground with the Taliban. The sooner they are gone the better for all mankind.
So this man, Rehman was dropping chips randomly, putting some innocent civilians in the line of fire for $122.00. Whatever happened to 11 billions dollars that US govt gave to ex dictator of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf & Pakistan army ? Seems we are in the business of buying cheap spies. Guy paid with his life for measly sum of $122
GOD BLESS THE C.I.A.!
"We're better than that because we're Americans."

Unfortunately, that is no longer true. We have become what we despised.
This situation in Pakistan is the real deal.  We need to be vigilant....I think its wise that we're continuing these types of activities in terms of spying and developing spy networks.

What's happening in the SWAT Valley is an absolute travesty and could have tremendous consequences for us if Pakistan becomes a failed state and the Taliban and other Al Quaeda friendly groups are able to get more and more control of that country.  So - we have to move aggressively and quietly in the night so to speak on this.
