Wanted Taliban leader doesn't fear U.S.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Afghan intelligence agents are sharing information with militants about U.S. and NATO troop movements, a top Taliban commander told NBC News.

"The people of Afghanistan are with us," said Sirajuddin Haqqani, in an exclusive interview.  "The Afghan intelligence officials are sympathetic to the Taliban and they communicate the movements of the occupying forces [U.S. and NATO] to us."

There was no way to confirm Haqqani's claims, but nearly eight years after the attacks of 9/11, the United States has struggled to oust the Taliban and its al-Qaida allies from parts of Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.

On March 27, President Barack Obama pledged a fresh infusion of U.S. troops to the region. "If the Afghanistan government falls to the Taliban or allows al-Qaida to go unchallenged," Obama said, "that country will again be a base for terrorists."

The United States also has hinted at possible negotiations with some elements of the Taliban. On March 31, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Taliban members in Afghanistan who abandoned extremism must be granted an "honorable form of reconciliation" while Defense Secretary Robert Gates noted that a similar rapprochement worked in Iraq.

However, the Taliban commander – who has a $5 million bounty on his head – dismissed U.S. efforts. Haqqani said that, contrary to comments from U.S. officials, there are no moderate Taliban willing to talk to America. As for other negotiations, Haqqani said that rumors of Saudi Arabia brokering peace negotiations with the Taliban leadership were just that – rumors.

Haqqani said Taliban fighters are now more resourceful than in the past. "We have acquired the modern technology that we were lacking and we have mastered new and innovative methods of making bombs and explosives," he explained.

The commander said he travels freely around Afghanistan because most people don’t know what he looks like. The 29-year-old said he keeps a low profile by travelling alone or just with one companion.

Risky trip
This was the second time I travelled across the mountains from Pakistan into Afghanistan to meet Haqqani. Last July, I had no doubt I would get the interview – this time I wasn't so sure.

I had submitted my interview request through two Taliban commanders in South Waziristan. They are men I have known since I was a young reporter – they fled Afghanistan and settled in Pakistan, after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001.

But during the past year, the roads in Pakistan’s border areas have become much more dangerous – they are peppered with militants of all persuasions: thieves, warlords, drug lords and bandits who earn a living kidnapping hostages for ransom.

I decided to risk all and go. I left my home at dawn, in the pouring rain, one morning last week and hopped on a bus leaving Peshawar for South Waziristan, along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.  I calculated that the 4-1/2 hour uncomfortable bus trip would be safer than travelling by car.

The roof of the bus was leaking badly from the heavy downpour, so the passengers inside were angry and kept shouting at the driver. I was nervous he would stop the bus and order all of us to get off, but he drove on.

‘This is our area,’ says Taliban militant
When we arrived in Tank, a border town on the cusp of the Northwest Frontier Province and South Waziristan, I immediately felt the tension. The Taliban were in full view and in full control.

As we had arranged on the phone ahead of time, a taxi was waiting for me in Tank. I was told to give my phone to the driver and then after about two minutes, a Toyota pick-up truck with black windows pulled up alongside of me and I climbed in.  A young fighter, with a thick beard, asked my name. Once I assured him who I was, we never spoke again.

We traveled another four hours to Wana, the main city in South Waziristan. There I was introduced to two Taliban commanders who escorted me to a guest house where I was supposed to spend the night. I was tired and tried not to think of my safety; I just wanted to sleep. It had been a very long day.

Around midnight, the commander came to wake me – we had to leave the location – two U.S. drone aircraft were overhead. Now I was scared.

It was still raining. We moved from house to house, and location to location, all night long until we finally drove across the border.

When my escorts told me that we had arrived in Afghanistan, I became really frightened and wanted to return home.

The commander assured me that we were in an area controlled by the Taliban. "This is our area," he said. "Don’t be afraid."

Heard the bounty news on VOA-Pashto service
We continued to drive along unfamiliar terrain until we reached a non-descript mud-built house nestled in a valley and surrounded by plush mountains. I had no idea where I was but when a second car pulled up alongside of me, there was no mistaking the man who stepped out – he was tall, trim and almost handsome, with dark, mischievous eyes.

When one meets Haqqani, it is hard to believe he holds control over so many men; his demeanor is humble, polite and he listens attentively.

Haqqani is one of the top Afghan warlords; he claims to control Paktika, Paktia and Khost provinces as well as the capital, Kabul.

His father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, was one of the most feared and fearless mujahideen (holy warrior) commanders bankrolled by the CIA to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. The elder Haqqani is in failing health now. His second son, Sirajuddin, took over as the head of his network; he is considered to be so powerful that the United States recently put a $5 million bounty on his head.

I asked him about the reward money.

"I was staying with some people the night it was announced by the Americans," Haqqani told me. "I couldn’t sleep and switched on VOA [Voice of America]-Pashto service on the radio, that’s where I heard the news.

"Why are they wasting their time announcing a reward for me?" Haqqani asked. "The Americans still don’t understand that even if they kill me, there are thousands of ‘Sirajuddins’ in Afghanistan who want only to liberate our homeland from the occupying foreign forces."

U.S. intelligence officials believe that the Haqqani network has helped al-Qaida establish safe havens in Pakistan’s tribal areas after they fled Afghanistan following the U.S. invasion.

When I brought up President Barack Obama’s $15 billion economic aid package to help Pakistan combat militancy in the tribal regions near Afghanistan, Haqqani laughed. "The Americans think they can buy everything," he said. "The more money they give, the more pressure they will put on Pakistan. That money will only turn more people against America and give us more space."

Haqqani also brushed off the looming Afghan elections in August as a farce.

"These people who are holding office are incapable of operating a single government department. How can they run a country?

"It is too early to say how we will react to the elections," he added and indicated it was time for him to leave.

This is very sad, but I am afraid it is true. U.S Response is to send money or troops, or both. There are no moderate zealots. I am afraid President Obama is learning the world and its people are more complex than the he thought whe he was campaigning.
I am tired of this - all of this. I do not care if Mushtaq Yusufzai and Sirajuddin Haqqani have to suffer 4-1/2 hour bus rides, are uncomfortable when they get rained on or get turned into hamburger from a rain of steel. Afghanistan is a worthless country of rocks and sand. It is a habitat that is not even fit for goats and buzzards. None of it is worth 1 American life.
The leaders and people of Afganistan need to take the Taliban threat seriously and not try to appease. This is a terrorist organization that has nothing to offer the people but much suffering.
I still cannot get a single person/agency to comment on the oil pipeline that is in Afganistan...isnt this part of why we are really over there?
Many countries (including the Russians and Brazil) took a serious look at making an oil pipeline through Afghanistan, but it never actually happened.
IF THIS GUY IS THE LEADER HE THINKS HE IS ,WHY DOES HE SNEAK AROUND,'REAL BRAVE'.IT'S AMAZING HOW THESE PEOPLE WORSHIP THESE PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE GUTS TO STAND UP AND SHOW THEY ARE THE REAL LEADERS.
The "graveyard of empires" will be a black hole of enless dying for America.  As a combat veteran of Viet Nam and an Army brat for 16 yrs I know the US military.  We have been used and abused by corporate vampires who profit off of war. The father of our country, George Washington, said, " no standing army and no foreign entanglements" .  We have become Hessians, mercs killing for money.  Bring everyone home now. we are bankrupting our nation and robbing our own chuldren.  I will not allow my government to rule by fear.  Fear is the little death, I will allow it to flow through me and when it is gone, only I will remain.
dont these people realize that we want out of their country too?  We want them to establish freedoms and democracy that works best for them.  We alos do not want an area of the world that harbors terrorism; especially the likes of Al Qaida.  If they would work together, we would leave sooner.  Isn't that what they want?
We've nothing from the failed Soviet incurion and are therefore doomed to the same fate. This area opf the world cuased the total ecomonic collapse oof the soviet union! and it, along with Iraq is doing the same to the U>S>!!!
I just realized that the Taliban is really controlled by SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion).  The only alternative now is to send in James Bond and Rambo.
Wow...no wonder they want to kill us...look at the way we think of all Muslims as being terrorists...we're also so arrogant and misguideded that we speculate as to whether to acknowledge our president as an American or one of them (terrorist).  Before we can be successful, we have to clean up the race problems we have here. I'd rather send all the ignorant wastes of American life and resources to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight and die than watch my hardworking, honest, level headed brothers and sisters in the military die. And about us sympathizing with Muslims, it's a good thing.. The people of the Muslim world need to know that we are not after them, but if they are after us, that will change quickly.
Great idea, Dave.  Let's have no standing army.  Some of you might want to try and understand that things are slightly different today than in Colonial times.
We should focus on our mission.  Kill bin Laden and let the Afghans take care of themselves.  When they get tired of the BS...they'll rise up;  just as afflicted people in America and other countries have.  They like a primitive society, let them have and rule it.
how about if we just go ahead and nuke this whole region back to a time when there is nothing left but glassy dust? Who in the world would trust these people? They don't want us there, they grow enough opium to feed the entire world, and even their leader Karzai is starting to get a little bit of an attitude about the US and didn't we put him in there in the first place? That first rosey glow when the first warhead strikes might make them go, "OOOPPPSS! We Fu&(ed up this time!" Just be done with it-let the world snub us-who cares? We have enough problems here at home without worrying about whether we have "friends" in some God-forsaken country that barely has running water & lights! Nuke it and in a thousand years when it's safe to go in, build a giant mall for India since that's where most of our jobs & money is going to anyway!
I am a Canadian and I support our troops USA and Canada, but I think that we should get out and let the pile of sand blow where it wants. The NATO part of this is a joke! The day we leave the Taliban will be ruling again anyway so why waste more of our troops lives!
First we make sure that Iraq is totally secure from al-Qaida first. In Afghanistan we need to fight the Taliban and al-Qaida do ruthlessly.
They have no fear because Obama will hug them to death. Just as he is about to turn loose the terrorists at Gitmo.Msnbc don't you get it the terrorists are not to be called terrorists anymore. Better not let that happen again.
WOW, Mike Thompson...I guess you would know how to best deal with extremists, for you are one yourself "obamination" "Socialist Fools". Do you really believe you know what you are talking about? I love the freedom of speech, but we should preserve it's importance by leaving it for intelligent people.
No news here, we have known this all along.  This is a job for Hiliary and State.  Send them over there to talk, negociate, bow a little and we;ll see what happens.  While she's at it she can go to Somolia as well and exchange herself for out Capt. who is hostage.  Let her talk and talk and talk.
I sometimes wonder, if we had spent the kind of money we have spent on protecting the oil in the world... if we had taken that money and used it to research alternative sources of energy... say fusion, air, solar, natural gas, geo thermal... the list goes on... I have to wonder... how many lives is it worth to have the outdated energy source?  This is the Oil Age... We will all be viewed as very foolish people, fighting over oil.  Yes, they actually had wars, Johnny... It's ludicrous.  But on we go.
Mr. Haqqani certainly has some elaborate security measures for someone who claims not to be afraid of the US.  He is a common thief hiding behind a purported struggle against the imperialist US.  For the part of the US, this country objects to his exports of heroin and terrorism.  The Afgan people smile and clap for cameras when the Taliban are near but dread the slide back into hell promised by their return to power.

The US and the Afgan people have a big stake in what happens in Afganistan.  The country cannot be allowed to slide back into barbaric feudalsim that allows diseases like you to fester.  Someone may step in to take your place when you are gone, but then again there's always the chance that they will look at what happened to you and reconsider the wisdom of doing so.  As for your existence, from now on you will have to be right every time, but that drone flying overhead only has to be right once.  Pleasant dreams Mr. Haqqani your 15 minutes will soon be up.
We should focus on the fact that THIS is NOT our mission..It is not our mission to kill bin Laden, create democracy, change and destroy lives. It IS
our mission to be AMERICANS,take care of AMERICANS,AMERICAN jobs, corp.,co's,peoples and set the
example for those countries who wish to follow our way of life..help to improve it and enjoy it. That my friend is THE point.
I'd turn him in and keep the 5 million...lol
John Smith is typical of Americans, too bigoted to actually know anything about that which they speak.  I was in Afghanistan in the 70's just before the US CIA overthrew the government of Afghanistan.  All else is a result of that including Mr. Obama's current campaigne there.  Terrorists in Afghanistan?  I think not.  They come from America, Britain, France, Canada, Austrailia, etc.  The whole thing in Afghanistan is a fraud perpetrated by the US Government leading to over 6 and a half million deaths and injuries amongst the Afghans.  Not to mention the the almost half million deaths and injuries to Soviet troops when the Soviets "fell" into the "trap" set in Afghanistan by Mr. Carter and Mr. Brezinski along with the earlier machinations of Nixon, Kissinger and JFK there.  When a country half way round the world goes to another country and overthrows it's legitimate government and creates absolute chaos and war there, that government(and for those of you that need it spelled out for you: The Government of the United States of America)is a criminal entity.  And people like John Smith of Tacoma Wa are just a bunch of brainwashed bigots.  If anything needs to be nuked it is not Afghanistan or Pakistan, no the country and people that deserve it lie much closer to home.  I am truly embarrassed to call myself Amerikan anymore.  I was born here but know better.  America is nothing more than a criminal enterprise.  Afghanistan on the other hand was(at least) civilized and a happy country that was screwed over by the western powers, that is all.
Somebody had better collect on the $5m reward, thi9s guy is nuts and so is the reporter.  He is crazier than hell and there should be a reward on his head.
Can't believe how many comments are still determined to make this a Red/Blue political issue. We lost Afghanistan over the last 8 years because we relied solely on military tools. Dipomacy doesn't weaken our strategy. The US used to be one of the best diplomatic liasons in the world. Using the State Department to improve infrastructure in Afghanistan and shore up the foundations of the government there will nothelp the Taliban. Negotiating with moderate Taliban and tribesmen and getting them to fight FOR us will not weaken our position. Stop the cowboy mentality. It's not red or blue, it's just wrong. Let's be smart, not arrogant.
Of course he isn't afraid now.  We have namby pamby Obama as president.  He will do nothing but apologize for America and say oh we are bad and we are wrong and you are right and how much do we owe you.  Obama is turning this country into a bunch of p us sies and putting a big target on our backs.  He has ZERO experience people talked about Palin's lack of experience in Washington....she was only going to be vice president.  Obama had 2 years as a senator......that's it and the last year and a half he was on the campaign trail so you idiots elected a guy that has 6 months experience in washington with ZERO international experience.  It takes more experience to get hired to be a plumber and you elected this guy to be in charge of our economy and our safety.  God help us all if we manage to survive the next 4 years.  Between letting illegals in and kowtowing to terrorist and the rest of the world we are becoming the world's doormat.  We are nothing to be afraid of we are the kid trying to be the popular kid in school doing what everyone tells us to do....we aren't popular they are just making fun of us and enjoying us running around trying to please them all.  They don't like us unless we are handing them money and as soon as we do it is the big FU to us.  Grow up they don't like us and never will quit trying to be the popular kid........this isn't high school this is life they don't have to like us but we should make sure they respect the fact we aren't going to lay down and be a doormat but that is what Obama is turning us into.
The U.S. KNows Where These People Are, The Same With OBL. There's No Effort Involved. These MIlitants And Their Country Should Have Been Wiped Out And The Country Leveled. The U.S.Is Pussy-Footing This War.
It is obvious by the comments here that the American people understand little if nothing about other cultures.  Afghans and Arabs,Persians Pakistani, far easterners and the list goes on and on don't want foreigners in their country telling them how to act and how to live their lives.  The old saying the pen is mightier than the sword are probably the most important quote that describes the situation.  Bulletts will only go so far but wont change things they make people more determined. Our mentality towards others has to change in order to live in peace.
For all you mindless readers out there who cannot formulate an independent thought, the facts on the ground is different from what you hear on CNN and Faux News. The Taliban has the Americans back to the wall. And all the money spent won't alleviate the burden of defeat. It is inevitable, you will loose. The Afghans have a reason to fight to the death whereas the Americans for the most part don't have a clue why they're fighting or dying. The Taliban have the support of majority of Afghans, that's why the resistance is gettin strong and bolder. Obama does'nt have a clue what he's doing in Afghanistan. All his plots and schemes are doomed to fail.
Compare the State of Colorado with Afghanistan.  We have condos and ski resorts, and white water rafting, and all sorts of fun activities, and they have mud huts and religious fanatics with lice in their beards running all over the place beating up on people, and telling us how much they love God.  What a world!!
What the hell is the mission over there?  To make those people like us? I say screw them. Primitive and barbaric civilizations usually die out on their own, but oil money continues to allow these stoneage freaks to go on. Get the electric cars and let these idiots go back to living in tents, dying of malaria and stoning each other to death for blasphemy. And then see how long they last!
If he is not afraid, why is he hiding?
P. McIlveen, Van, BC
When your country starts defending it's self or starts paying our country for you defense, then you will get a vote....You are tired of Americans, were tired of your girly whining..... Grow a pair....
He is very right on one point; Americans think money is the answer to everything. How arrogant of Americans

""Haqqani laughed. "The Americans think they can buy everything," he said.""

looooooooooooooooooooooooool ahahha heheheheheh LOOL

SOOOOO damn agree..HOW arrogant of Americans //COME ON AMERICAN .ARE WE THAT ARROGANT WHEN IT COMES TO WAR??????
Well, Bush Cheney or administration under them never studied Muslim culture, life style and or Islam religion or history, although they were advised that every mughal emporer died in his sons' captivity and they can eliminate each other, but if you try to place bounty on them or try to do anything to them they unite. Only way victory is possible is when you follow British Monarchy rules that they used to keep India and almost of all of Pashtoont's and middle east under control for centuries. They started from Kolkatta (Previously Calcutta) where they got support from Muslims. These muslims do not need much to live and can live happily in "non-descript mud-built house nestled in a valley and surrounded by plush mountains" as taken from above article for years. They are like Haqqni "When one meets Haqqani, it is hard to believe he holds control over so many men; his demeanor is humble, polite and he listens attentively. His second son, Sirajuddin, took over as the head of his network; he is considered to be so powerful that the United States recently put a $5 million bounty on his head."
So only way US can succeed is what Robert Gate and Hillary are doing, but infitrating in that community and let community take care of itself, promote good leaders and kill bad leaders for a price. No annuouncements will get any one but a mosques leaders Fatwa can be carried out within days, so if they can implant leadership in Mosques, be it Iran or Afganistan, they will win, if not Haqqni is right they will give him more space. So go figure.

Sheesh, you people have rocks for brains.  Of course the Taliban are bad leaders and tyrants, but becoming the same in the name of freeing a people who do not want it, WILL NOT MAKE AMERICA SAFER.  Pull your heads out!  You claim that Pres. Obama is making us less safe by trying to find a middle-ground where we can attain at least a non-violent relationship is what you guys are claiming, right?  You know who else makes these kinds of statements??? The Taliban!  The right wingers in America have become our equivalent of the Taliban.  Morons.
Operating under the cover of darkness, moving from house (I use that term lightly) to house, planting roadside bombs to kill or maim any unsuspecting person, yes this includes women and children, would seem to indicate some sort of fear. The taliban and their so called leader, Haqqani, are all radical thugs who play on the fear of innocent Afghan people who simply want to earn a living to feed their family's. Our only interest in Afghanistan is to methodically root out and destroy muslim extremist who are under the impression that "holy war" exsist.
Doesn't fear the U.S?!?!? Are you kidding me? Sounds like the obstacle course this reporter had to go through just to have a 15 minute conversation with this guy would counter that headline. If that's how these scumbags have to operate, then I would have to say the U.S is doing something right and these pieces of crap have plenty fear in their hearts.
I suggest the strategy of "total war" against Afghanistan, just like General Sherman handled the Confederacy during the U:S: Civil War.  Any other tactic just puts off the inevitable. Thereafter, dissolve the country, and divide it into parts and give them to the countries that participated in the victory, subject to uniform rules.
Why do we as Americans keep blaming Bush? This problem lies much deeper than a President can create! I read this story and when i got to the end i read these comments Have we forgotten "United We Stand" dang people support your country, president, government. We are the people of the United States, it's not us against them in our country. Sad to read some of my fellow Americans Posts!
Some times the messages being reported by the media and the real agenda by our government are not the same. misinformation is a valuable tool in time of war, however I am of the opinion that our new president should stop saying he is sorry for the worlds problems, We are not the cause that have kept these warring tribes fighting for a thousand years, Our motive in being there is one of advancement of human rights and the elevation of the standard of living, We all know the old saying we can lead the horse to water but cant make him drink. We need to deploy many more special operations teams throughout the country and turn the lites out on these cavemen that have the most twisted moral values I have ever heard of, We have the ground forces qualified to get the job done, now lets see if Washington has the gonads to do the job and bring our boys home.
The wing nuts on the right want to disparage Obama for not going after the Taliban....PLEASE!  Who wasted US blood and treasure in Iraq while those responsible for 9/11 roamed Afghanistan planning more attacks on US and their allies?  The loudest mouths of the Conservative set are also the most cowardly.  Check how many have ever served in the Armed Forces.  Not Boss Hog Limbaugh or Hannity.  O'Reilly?  The closest he's come to combat is hitting a protester with his pen.  But they are good at serving up their warped propaganda to their hungry hordes of automatons who then come on sites like this spewing their hate like so many witless fools.
Are you kidding?  Pres. Obama is making us less safe than Bush?  Are you delusional?  Are you forgetting that after 9/11 the entire world was behind us and still respected and feared us?  Are you forgetting that after 7 years of failed wars, that our military is stretched so thin and the world now knows it?  They no longer respect us and surely do not fear us any longer.  You're going to try to blame that on Pres. Obama after 10 weeks?  You people are a joke!  It is your attitude which caused 9/11 and it is your attitude which is causing the downfall of our once great nation.  Moronic.
Welcome to the abyss.....  Maybe now the MSM will ask Joe Biden when that foreign policy test was coming?
US is not occupying Iraq or Afghanistan--military occupation-Territory is considered occupied when it is actually placed under the authority of the hostile army.
the US is not the authority in Iraq or Afghanistan--local governments control their own countries--we are there trying to keep them from killing each other--to try to bring some essence of peace so people can have some sort of safety--so they do not live there life everyday wondering who is going to try to kill them today--
THE RIGHT WILL ALWAY ALWAYS TRY TO BLAME OBAMA FOR THIS WAR ON TERROR.... BARACK IS TRYING TO STOP TERRORIST... WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN FIGHTING THESE TERRORIST FOR THE LAST 7 YEARS.... NOW LET OBAMA TRY TO CLEAN UP BUSH/CHENEY'S MESS
Why can't we "follow" the reporters...and place a nice JDAM right where they are meeting?
Strategy isnt working?  On what basis?  Have we been attacked on US soil since this "strategy" was implemented?  Based on almost 2,000 years of warmongering, what, exactly HASNT been said to bring peace in this region.

In that way, I agree with Obama - America IS arrogant if we think coffee and donuts will resolve a conflict that has endured since the dawn of civilization.
GPS tracking would not work, These people have all the technology they need to detect it and would kill any journalist who was armed with tracking devices. They use ipods and iphones and internets just like all our kids do. How do you think Osama gets his videos out?
if he is not afraid then why does he hide in the groud like a scared rabbit??

if the Talliban and all other insurgent groups are going to be contained, then the United Nations and US must put 500,000 troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan at the same time--otherwise lets pack our bags up and hope they do not plant a dirty bomb on US soil.
Everyone seems to forget--they attacked first.
