Wanted Taliban leader doesn't fear U.S.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Afghan intelligence agents are sharing information with militants about U.S. and NATO troop movements, a top Taliban commander told NBC News.

"The people of Afghanistan are with us," said Sirajuddin Haqqani, in an exclusive interview.  "The Afghan intelligence officials are sympathetic to the Taliban and they communicate the movements of the occupying forces [U.S. and NATO] to us."

There was no way to confirm Haqqani's claims, but nearly eight years after the attacks of 9/11, the United States has struggled to oust the Taliban and its al-Qaida allies from parts of Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.

On March 27, President Barack Obama pledged a fresh infusion of U.S. troops to the region. "If the Afghanistan government falls to the Taliban or allows al-Qaida to go unchallenged," Obama said, "that country will again be a base for terrorists."

The United States also has hinted at possible negotiations with some elements of the Taliban. On March 31, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Taliban members in Afghanistan who abandoned extremism must be granted an "honorable form of reconciliation" while Defense Secretary Robert Gates noted that a similar rapprochement worked in Iraq.

However, the Taliban commander – who has a $5 million bounty on his head – dismissed U.S. efforts. Haqqani said that, contrary to comments from U.S. officials, there are no moderate Taliban willing to talk to America. As for other negotiations, Haqqani said that rumors of Saudi Arabia brokering peace negotiations with the Taliban leadership were just that – rumors.

Haqqani said Taliban fighters are now more resourceful than in the past. "We have acquired the modern technology that we were lacking and we have mastered new and innovative methods of making bombs and explosives," he explained.

The commander said he travels freely around Afghanistan because most people don’t know what he looks like. The 29-year-old said he keeps a low profile by travelling alone or just with one companion.

Risky trip
This was the second time I travelled across the mountains from Pakistan into Afghanistan to meet Haqqani. Last July, I had no doubt I would get the interview – this time I wasn't so sure.

I had submitted my interview request through two Taliban commanders in South Waziristan. They are men I have known since I was a young reporter – they fled Afghanistan and settled in Pakistan, after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001.

But during the past year, the roads in Pakistan’s border areas have become much more dangerous – they are peppered with militants of all persuasions: thieves, warlords, drug lords and bandits who earn a living kidnapping hostages for ransom.

I decided to risk all and go. I left my home at dawn, in the pouring rain, one morning last week and hopped on a bus leaving Peshawar for South Waziristan, along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.  I calculated that the 4-1/2 hour uncomfortable bus trip would be safer than travelling by car.

The roof of the bus was leaking badly from the heavy downpour, so the passengers inside were angry and kept shouting at the driver. I was nervous he would stop the bus and order all of us to get off, but he drove on.

‘This is our area,’ says Taliban militant
When we arrived in Tank, a border town on the cusp of the Northwest Frontier Province and South Waziristan, I immediately felt the tension. The Taliban were in full view and in full control.

As we had arranged on the phone ahead of time, a taxi was waiting for me in Tank. I was told to give my phone to the driver and then after about two minutes, a Toyota pick-up truck with black windows pulled up alongside of me and I climbed in.  A young fighter, with a thick beard, asked my name. Once I assured him who I was, we never spoke again.

We traveled another four hours to Wana, the main city in South Waziristan. There I was introduced to two Taliban commanders who escorted me to a guest house where I was supposed to spend the night. I was tired and tried not to think of my safety; I just wanted to sleep. It had been a very long day.

Around midnight, the commander came to wake me – we had to leave the location – two U.S. drone aircraft were overhead. Now I was scared.

It was still raining. We moved from house to house, and location to location, all night long until we finally drove across the border.

When my escorts told me that we had arrived in Afghanistan, I became really frightened and wanted to return home.

The commander assured me that we were in an area controlled by the Taliban. "This is our area," he said. "Don’t be afraid."

Heard the bounty news on VOA-Pashto service
We continued to drive along unfamiliar terrain until we reached a non-descript mud-built house nestled in a valley and surrounded by plush mountains. I had no idea where I was but when a second car pulled up alongside of me, there was no mistaking the man who stepped out – he was tall, trim and almost handsome, with dark, mischievous eyes.

When one meets Haqqani, it is hard to believe he holds control over so many men; his demeanor is humble, polite and he listens attentively.

Haqqani is one of the top Afghan warlords; he claims to control Paktika, Paktia and Khost provinces as well as the capital, Kabul.

His father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, was one of the most feared and fearless mujahideen (holy warrior) commanders bankrolled by the CIA to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. The elder Haqqani is in failing health now. His second son, Sirajuddin, took over as the head of his network; he is considered to be so powerful that the United States recently put a $5 million bounty on his head.

I asked him about the reward money.

"I was staying with some people the night it was announced by the Americans," Haqqani told me. "I couldn’t sleep and switched on VOA [Voice of America]-Pashto service on the radio, that’s where I heard the news.

"Why are they wasting their time announcing a reward for me?" Haqqani asked. "The Americans still don’t understand that even if they kill me, there are thousands of ‘Sirajuddins’ in Afghanistan who want only to liberate our homeland from the occupying foreign forces."

U.S. intelligence officials believe that the Haqqani network has helped al-Qaida establish safe havens in Pakistan’s tribal areas after they fled Afghanistan following the U.S. invasion.

When I brought up President Barack Obama’s $15 billion economic aid package to help Pakistan combat militancy in the tribal regions near Afghanistan, Haqqani laughed. "The Americans think they can buy everything," he said. "The more money they give, the more pressure they will put on Pakistan. That money will only turn more people against America and give us more space."

Haqqani also brushed off the looming Afghan elections in August as a farce.

"These people who are holding office are incapable of operating a single government department. How can they run a country?

"It is too early to say how we will react to the elections," he added and indicated it was time for him to leave.

Why would you fear the United States.  We have a President apologizing to the world for everything American.  Funny, dumb Americans travel the world and tip everyone for serving them yet others from around the world travel and are demanding and do not tip the "extra" amounts that Americans do and we are the bad people.
America is getting soft and is no longer willing to defend herself.  The terrorists (oops) enemy combatants (wrong) nice people who disagree with the U.S. in the past administration have nothing to fear.  Obama will open our borders to them and us in the USA will pay the price.  Welcome to the new world order compliments of the charmer in peace that will get us all killed.
I hope that the 15 billion goes toward helping the people build the infrastructure they need to live. They need help and if we can provide it, they will shift loyalties. If we help the farmers with other crops, they won't have to turn to poppies to eak out a living. We should learn well what the Russians taught us about fighting the enemy in that region and try a different approach. Let's show the world that we really aren't warmongers settling things only with guns and bombs.
Of course this clown isn't afraid of us,Pres.Obama and Sec.of State Clinton want to "negotiate"with these savages. The Socialists in charge of the U.S. Government WILL NOT go after terrorists, they won't even call them enemy combatants anymore. We are going to be attacked,we are going to have to fight these terrorists on our own soil, and our Socialist Gov't.is giving our enemies every advantage. At the same time our Socialist Gov't.is working on a plan to take our guns. Some of these traitors, the Black Congressional Caucus, have even taken time off from looting the Treasury,to go hang out with Fidel Castro!!No,if I were a terrorist I wouldn't be very worried about the U.S.Gov't.Being a U.S.citizen I am very worried about the U.S.Gov't.
Maybe instead of describing how brave you are to go meet this animal, you should help shed some light to the military so they can capture him before he helps commit more terror. Real brave dude!
So isn't there a way to gather enough intelligence to pinpoint where those two drones were at the time he heard them overhead?  Passports stamps, travel logs, informants...It would make sense for that area to be targeted and destroyed.
So much time wasted by Bush chasing WMDs and trying to fight a war on a budget to keep the tax rate down.
I don't buy this story, why would they tell anyone that if it were true. They effectively would be killing the goose that lays the golden egg by saying it publicly and there goes that tactical advantage with a story such as this. This is just propaganda being used in a war of words.
It's a pity that the bushwhacker didn't go in to finish the job in Afghanistan when we had Osama bin Laden cornered at Tora Bora.  He didn't want to win the war too quickly so he let Osama escape to keep a convenient bogeyman around to scare us with.  Now over 7 years later Afghanistan is more dangerous than ever.  Heckuva Job Clueless George!

Hopefully Obama and Gates can get a new plan working that will get the Afghan people on our side.  Instead of eradication of the poppy crops, which has never worked, we need to buy the farmers off with agricultural subsidies so they don't need to grow opium poppies to feed their families.  We need to train up the Afghan Army that the bushwhacker failed to do so they can control their own country.  We also need to win over some of the more moderate Taliban so that we're only fighting the true extremists and thankfully we no longer have an idiot in the White House creating more of them with torture camps like Gitmo.

As always Obama has to clean up yet another mess made by the bushwhacker and his repugnant one pals.
One must remember that the "Taliban" has never threathened or been tied to terroirist activity on American Soil.

The Taliban also funds Medical Clinics and food give away to the poor in Pakistan and Afganistan-seen it with my own eyes.

They do need to reel in some of the ultra-religous out there on thereon their fringes, but I can see the Taliban being part of Afgani Governing Systems in the future.

Obama is right, Iraq was a foolish, evil mistake and a massive egotistical blunder by George "Mission Accomplished" Bush and his minion Cheney (who is just a weak, balding, fat evil minded little man).

Afganistan is where we should be, way to go President Obama.
Yeah of course he is not scared of us, that is why he has a 3 bedroom condo on the Persian Gulf and plays golf on the weekends, no, wait, isn't he "HIDING" in a cave somewhere?  Their definition of fear must be different from ours.
Mushtaq Yusufzai,

Back in 2001, after the WTC bombings, the US government accused osama bin laden of the attacks, and requested the taliban turn him over.  omar refused, saying he would not do so until we could prove anything.  when we were finally able to prove our accusations, he instead changed his mind, and shortly thereafter fled with osama.  omar was/is the leader of the taliban.  if we cant trust the leadership to make good on their word, why should we care what they think?  i say destroy them all.  rid afghanistan of the vermin, and let their god sort it out.

NEVER FORGET 9/11.
The Obama Administration has the same mindset the Bush Administration had regarding Afghanistan which is: that if the U.S. is not there, the U.S. will get another 9/11.  This government strategy/policy mental lockdown has absolutely no basis in logic, and is so stupid it borders on insanity.  This propaganda has been promoted in the U.S. and millions of people here still believe it. Incredible! This scam is one of the biggest con jobs in recent history.  How much grease does it take for a horse to be able to swallow a brick?  Maybe I'm too concerned.  Guess I need to stop using my brain, do a dumb down, and realize that terrorist attacks can be planned against the U.S. ONLY from the Afghanistan area, and that as long as there is one American there we will never have another 9/11.  And better yet, if we can only capture Osama bin Hiding we will never, ever have another 9/11 for sure.  Right?  Reminds me of when I was a little kid and I thought there was a monster in my closet, and if I covered my head with a blanket he would never attack me, or better yet how about when we were little kids and thought that if we put our hands over our eyes we would become invisible?
I have a problem with our government ideals and the way they think they helped these people push the Russians out but at what price have we paided for it? Would it not be wise to think through all the results and ask if it's worth getting involved with trying to play politics with countries they know nothing about there cultures. I still have some reservations about why Al Qada attacked us and why having such hatred for Saddam Hussien on Bush's watch both of them what price have we paided for invading Iraq? There is more to the story then is being told.
Just think.  If we could turn this individual around for the good, how it might speed things up in a good direction. Price tags on someone's head only stimulate they don't inhibit anything.
Why doesn't this reporter just date Haqqani.  He is obviously enamoured of him.  "his demeanor is humble, polite, and listens attentively."  He describes Haqqani as tall, trim, and almost handsome.  Oh yeah, and he is also a killer!  He falls in love with the guy faster than a female reporter and an incarcerated serial killer.
Until the world stop caring about material things and greed is defeated - we will always have these type of problems - there will be no peace.
God, Allah, Budda, etc they preach peace - but no takers.
Be afraid very afraid.....
Simple solution. Give the Intelligence agents lie detector test. Those that fail get shot. Now there is no leak to the taliban.
President Obama wants to apease these people and doesn't have a grasp on reality. These people (Taliban, etc.) have but one agenda, to destroy the West by any means...end of story.
If this so-called taliban leader doesn't fear the U.S. then why does he keep his face from view? Actions of a coward! That's why... If you're that brave then show your face!
Terrorist are all the same, get out of my country, we hate america, you will never stop us. Blah blah blah. I get sick of hearing them all the time. Hide in your caves and mud huts and cry about everything, while we do whatever we want to.
This interview seems so wrong on many levels...1: the government can't find these people with all it's resources, but a reporter gets to sit down with them and has a chat, 2: this reporter just sat face to face with someone who kills people for a living and did nothing, 3: I wonder when we will stop acting like a bunch of playground children with guns and pool the world's resources to figure out what we're going to do about survival of the human race with regards to global disasters, the sun exploding, meteors come crashing into us, or the ozone layer leaving...
The United States government still doesn't get it.....and probably never will.......meanwhile more and more and more and more and more and more U.S. soldiars will die over there and more and more and more and more and more taxpayer money will be wasted.
I have no doubt that there are people in these area's that believe that the taliban and al-Qaida are their savours but for the most part they are ruled over with fear and that control and lack of education makes them easy to control. al-Qaida leadership is only interested in making themself more important for their own ego, and the taliban are not do the work of GOD it is just a bunch of fat old men and bullies trying to impose their will over people and for them to tell the people under there rule that they speak for GOD will end up where all sinners go. the sad part is they will take so many good people with them it is a sad state of affairs but the poor of these countries have never had the chance to learn any other way. the only thing that could be worse for these people happens to be their own people kill their own family and friends in the name of there so called religion.
this guy is laughing just like the europeans are at our president - his style is spend, spend, spend and tax - then spend more 11 trillion dollars in 10yrs - the extremists know and respect one thing strength and force - this is how the lived for thousands of years money is not going to change that - give you an idea of how much a trillion dollars is - from the time jesus was born if you spent a million dollars a day until now you would still have 700yrs left to spend but we are talking about 11 TRILLION - WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?
This guy lilves in a non-descript mud-built hut... sounds like paradise to me! Glad to see the drone patrols keep these clowns shook. Can't move during the day, can't sleep at night, can't hardly breathe because the "eye in the sky" can nail you at any moment. They're like the Santa Claus of Death, always watching, waiting; except the gift they bring to the naughty creates more flame than any lump of coal could. They may act hardened, but imagine the stress that has to mount knowing your possibly under constant surveillance. I think the military needs smaller, bird-sized drones that carry only a camera, no weapons, that can better track these guys closer to the ground without detection. Then they would really be freaked out, like a crackhead, tweaking at every little noise until they lose their minds.
Also, this commander may be right in saying the money to Pakistan will do nothing. Look what it has done in Afghanistan. Once a hole, always a hole. In due time we're going to hit these higher value targets... its been awfully quiet lately. It leads me to believe were doing more tracking and less wiping out of lower value targets in order to wait and be led to the bigger fish. I wonder if you hear anything before the missle hits? Better make your bathroom breaks quick Taliban, because I would hate to die with my pants down.
Other than killing all of the Taliban there is no solution for us. It's obvious these people want nothing to do with our way of life and they don't intend to let their women have any say in it. Let's save all the money we've been wasting on these throwbacks- they're just like our right wing repugnants- they live on hate.
Obama has been president for quite a while now.  According to Bush-haters, it is a cakewalk to capture Bin Laden.

Where is Bin Laden?  Why is he still at large?  Why are we not invading Afghanistan to find him?  Why are we continuing to fight in Iraq?  Why are are troops not home?
I am sick and tired of the Americans claiming for all the actions of the world, starting from world war 2, to korea, to now. they are not the only ones fighting. There are British, Belgian, Canadian, & Many other NATO countries at arms with the taliban and al-qaeda.
The obamination just doesn't get it; these people are at war with US and they are intent on killing all Americans.  The obamination and his socialist fools don't understand that you cannot talk/negotiate/whatever with extremists.  The only thing extremists understand and respect is someone who is more powerful than they!
I operated throughout Paktika province in 2006-2007 and only experienced sporadic rocket-attacks on our Operating Base.  I wonder how Haqqani considers it a "controlled" province?
I can understand Afghanistans disapproval of foreign forces in their land, but too long their country's history has been only about national unity when it comes to fighting invading forces. The stakeholders in Afghanistan need to understand that they share cupability in their country's failure in providing for their citizens.  When will the warload adolescent personality of Afghanistan grow up and assume the responsibility of governance is the 64-million dollar question.

Pakistan is conveniently playing against both sides for their own twisted interest.  The diplomatic challenge is finding what will it take to get Pakistan's cooperation to satisfy America's security desires without causing an Islamic jihad and potential nuclear holocaust with its muslem sympathic population.

President Obama's muslem heritage and symbolic black skin of oppression makes the rhetoric against America less potent and credible.  Perhaps he is the angel that will broker the peace?  Surly, the solution is not a strategy of more bombs and bullets.  America cannot simply kill its way to success.  Instead we will have to invite them to the dinner table of prosperity and fast-food culture if we truly desire world peace.
These people are not mindless fanatics. We must talk to them and resolve our differences. They know it is easy for us to make life very difficult for them. They want to end the war as much as we do. They want power and money like all other rulers. They want to control thier little corner. We simply have to set the rules and they have to understand the consequences.
If the United States is not prepared to impose a "Carthaginian peace" in this war, there will
be no end to it.
We won't ever know if this is true but it's one more reason to eradicate terrorists as much as possible without the help of sympathizers.
Why should he fear the United States?  Obama just promised them the USA would not attack them and that we are not their enemies?

I'm not a Democrat nor a Republican but I swear  I wonder where our journalists heads are any more, and even worse, our leadership.  They don't know who the enemy is, and think they can light candles and sing John Lennon's songs and everything will be ok.  The truth is they will snuff your candle out then they will snuff you out.  These aren't respectable Muslims, they are terrorists, common criminals, and they deserve to be treated as such, not respected.
let these people have their space.Give them what they want, and we shall see what and if they do anything!Leave them to their own country, maybe just maybe they will better them  selfs and actually Help their people!hey ,Can it hurt us any more? Just make sure their nucular capibilities are NOT their!Let them understand one sure thing, play with fire and you WILL get Burned!ifso NUKE them and depart with that area of the world! WE do not need their oil!we need new alturnitives to other energies. thank you!Drumman55
They will never stop fighting. The sole purpose of the taliban and al-Quaida is to cause chaos in the world. They do not want peace and they will never have peace.  Just leave them to their own devices. Let them destroy themselves. We can beef up our own nation's security to prevent them from wreaking havoc over here.
Perhaps he should! He doesn't sound particularly brainy either.  I guess dummies can hate and pull triggers too.
The best way to fight any battle is to get ppl on your side.  "Money can't buy you love" sings the Beatles.  We need to win the hearts and souls of the Afgan ppl.  Schools, civic programs, civil defense: money for these programs - absolutely.  It will take a new generation of time ie. children schooled and trained into adults, but now you will have would-be / future thiefs and warlords on your side.  "train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it" King Solomon
I'm sure if the Taliban was getting intelligence info from NATO and US officials, they wouldn't be on TV telling people.

We are wasting our resources, both military and financial in this quagmire.  The current strategy isn't working.  I'm not sure what the right strategy is, but hoping for success is not a strategy.
Why should he fear us?  We wage war with our hands tied behind our backs, there is virtually no committment from NATO "partners".  Between the US and NATO, there should be 200,000 troops in country stabilizing it.  Or else we should get the hell out and give it back to Taliban, then absolutely level it if they ever attempt to strike us again.
I still cannot get a single person/agency to comment on the oil pipeline that is in Afganistan...isnt this part of why we are really over there?
"Why are they wasting their time announcing a reward for me?" Haqqani asked. "The Americans still don’t understand that even if they kill me, there are thousands of ‘Sirajuddins’ in Afghanistan who want only to liberate our homeland from the occupying foreign forces."

WAR I$ MONEY
This is exactly what's all about....they know that. But thats exactly the point. To ensure that the WAR MACHINE keeps rolling over & over for many many years, filling with tax payers money the HUGE bank accounts of the Military Industrial Complex Cartel.
America/Nato allies are smart enough to know that Afghanistan/Pakistan war its almost impossible to win, their second & first cousins (British & Russians)got their butt kicked before. But,hey! who cares about winning? All they care is about all those billions of dollars they can make while reducing the population with their GENOCIDE WAR$.
He is very right on one point; Americans think money is the answer to everything. How arrogant of Americans

""Haqqani laughed. "The Americans think they can buy everything," he said.""
isnt it time that all these idiots realize that they are killing each other because of man made philosophy religion is and will always be man made science on the other hand is real realize life does exist  in the cosmos we are not unique its time to stop living in yesterday its time to put human resources into expanding knowledge and saving human kind instead of destroying it
If the Afghan people are with them, as Sirajuddin Haqqani states, why do the Taliban feel it necessary to so ruthlessly oppress the populace in the areas under their control?

That would hardly be necessary if the Afghan people were truly supported the Taliban.
Ok, now why is it that we cant arm the "journalists" with tracking devices to find out where these extreamests are hiding? If the journalists" can have up close and personal meetings with these people why not tag em with a GPS locater and send in a couple of preditors? Oh I know, cause the journalist is protected. Bah! 1 Dead Journalist 10 Dead Terrorists, makes for a busy afternoon for St Peter.
Well,we are occuyping their Homeland.

How would you feel if a foreign Army occupied the USA?

Well never stop this stuff- thank you BUSH!
