A touch too far by Michelle Obama?

LONDON – Of all the G-20 moments, it was always tipped by those of us in the know as the meeting to watch, because the unthinkable could always happen. And it did.

It wasn’t President Barack Obama talking to Prime Minister Gordon Brown about how to bail out the world’s economies. Not the nuclear discussions with those tricky Russians either.  Nor even what the Axis of Evil might get up to in London (France’s Sarkozy and Germany’s Merkel, that is!).

VIDEO: First lady touch, a royal faux pas?
No. It was a simple touch.

It came when the first lady of the United States of America met the first lady of Great Britain – Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of State of the United Kingdom and of 15 other Commonwealth realms. She is our Head of the Armed Forces, Fount of Justice and Defender of the Faith.

The queen’s been on the world stage for more than five decades; Michelle Obama for about five minutes  – but all of them quite dazzling.

Yesterday she showed Britons why.

It wasn’t only President Obama who slayed Britain with his charm. His wife was also successful, standing head and shoulders above the best.

She strode across the plush Buckingham Palace carpet to shake the queen’s hand with the kind of courteous informality that characterizes Americans. Unlike the British royals, they don’t do "stuffy." And they don’t curtsey much either.

The queen – accustomed to pomp and protocol at every step – seemed surprisingly at ease too. She took hold of Mrs. Obama’s hand firmly – not her usual end-of-fingertips, don’t-come-too-close handshake.

She gave the Obamas a signed and framed photograph of her and her husband Prince Phillip.

In return, the first couple gave her majesty an iPod. Not the most obvious gift for a monarch in her 9th decade, you might think – but then I guess they realized that those little ear-phones are just perfect when wearing a crown.

But there was more to come.

Over centuries those around the royals have drawn up a list of do’s and dont’s. Among them: Keep your hands off.

Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating was dubbed the "Lizard of Oz" by British tabloids when, in 1992, he was photographed with his arm resting on the queen’s back.  Simply not done, old chap.

President George W. Bush got a withering look in 2007 when he gave her a cheeky wink. He’s lucky she didn’t poke him in the eye.

Queen Elizabeth II gives President George W. Bush a withering look post-wink.

So I hid behind the sofa when I saw Mrs. Obama slide her arm around the queen yesterday.

But then the biggest surprise of all.

The queen returned the gesture, and placed her own arm gently on the first lady’s back.

Whatever next? You could almost hear Michelle inviting the queen to come over for a clambake. Another Buffalo wing, your majesty?

How ridiculous that the queen is not supposed to be be "touched." She is a mortal just like everyone else.
Michelle Obama going sleeveless is not a problem, her husband not wearing a jacket in the Oval Office...fine. Do your fist pounds, they're great. We get it, you're young, hip, and stylish. But please don't disrespect the traditions of another country. It's American arrogance packaged in a slicker package.
Everyone needs to relax over this!!!
We are living in the 21st century, not the stone-age.
I am so proud of our President and First Lady for the
manner in which they have conducted theirselves on this first major policy trip, abroad. Not to mention the highly fashionable manner in which they both have dressed. They are a credit to this nation and are doing everything possible to eradicate the negative attitude the world has adopted about our country over the past 8 years. I am so puzzled by the lack of comment by all those GOP members who absolutely, "love
our country" in this regard. Hypocrites and whinners..
that is all I can say - other than to reinterate:
Go - Barack and Michelle..you are the epitamy of the USA - 2009!!!! You represent us- the real people, WELL.
I think it is very brave and quite possibly the best thing to have happen. The Queen can be down to earth too.  Times have changed and the graceful Queen takes it in stride.  We are different, we are American's.  Bravo to the Obama's!
I think that is probably refreshing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to have someone in her presence that is as charming and down to earth as the First Lady. In speculation she was probably treated like a human being and really felt like on too. Good for Michelle!
If the Queen returned the favor, then I see no problem with it. Way to go, Michele!
Perhaps her highness recognized a friendly gesture. Perhaps she has decided that the “common” touch of Ms Obama was more to her liking than G.W.B’s clownish hi-jinks. After all, haven’t the British press & public given the Queen grief over her perceived aloofness? Mayhap she has seen the film ‘The Queen’, and decided that is no bad thing to be perceived as less frosty. Or, maybe, she’s just an elderly woman who has decided she like this young, attractive, energetic, & poised woman; and decided to show it.
Hunter in LA;
they are doing much better than your previous president. He was SO embarrassing.
Holy crap! What next?  Dogs and cats living together in bliss?  God bless the Obamas!!!
Come now you all need to get a grip noting stays the same. You much change with the time why keep doing the same old thing.Michelle, keep doing your thing!!!! I love all of it.
It was noted that the Queen made the first move to put her arm around Michelle. It would have been rude not to return the gesture. I think the Queen was genuinely touched by her meeting with the Obamas and wanted to reach out. So, STOP talking about it as if it were a social error!
I think it was great...Very relaxed..I beleive it was a natural reaction for Mrs Obama to put her hand on her back, like the queen did to her....
I loved it
Yes we do things a bit differently in the Western World, If the Queen was open to Mrs. Obamas honesty and warmth she wasn't shocked by the nonintrusive slight touch from the arm on her back, and graciously returned the same to Mrs. Obama, stuffy, no, touched yes. The Queen is still a class act, as well as Mrs. Obama.  Cheers for the Queen.
Whatever the protocol, if the First Lady was able to establish the kind of rapport that made Her Majesty want to reciprocate the gesture of unity, then so be it. Would it be a bad thing to have the world begin to love and accept one another regardless of differences? As great a step as this is in our actually becoming a mature and respectful people, we still have a long way to go and a lot to learn from each other. I say let's work together to build a legacy we will be proud of.
What a waste of time to discuss this issue.  Michelle's gesture was initialised by Her Majesty, and the Queen reciprocated.  End of story.

Why do you Yanks bother about our Sovereign and protocol for her subjects?  Get over it-we have bigger things to worry about, like the ECONOMY.
I love First Lady Obama's warm and charm! It appears as though Queen Elizabeth ll does, too. Formal protocol is lovely at certain times. This simply wasn't one of them. I sincerely appreciate our new President and First Lady presenting themselves in a warm, friendly manner. It's who they are and who most Americans are, too.
English people have some major, major issues.  I think they're still sullen since their empire crumbled a hundred years ago, and they feel indignant at having to acknowledge the United States as the most powerful nation on Earth.
That how the comfortable the Obama's are and have been all the time, you go girl and Bro I mean Mr. President and First Lady class class class'''
To Jo Anne Weathers.  I'm 73, very English and proud of it.  Having said that, I am delighted with the informality and ease which your President and First Lady approach everyone, including the policeman on the door.  That some of it could rub off on some of our wannabe dignitories.
change has come to the world....
Please remember she,the Queen initiated the contact by placing her arm around Mrs Obama.I know Fox is making a big deal aboutit but let calmer heads prevail.Much to do about nothing.
Indication of the warmness and sincerity of the Black Woman
To Jo Anne.  No.  The Obamas do not represent us-the real people, WELL.  In fact, barely more than 50% of the electorate thought that Mr. Obama was suitable for the Presidency.

As to the point of the story though.  There needs to be respect for another country's traditions and customs.

However, everyone needs to remember that our elected President-be it Mr. Obama, Mr. Bush, or whomever else-probably hasn't had years of proper court protical drilled into their head.  Give them a break for slipping every once in a while, whether with a wink or an arm...
hey I would like to know how much the FIRST LADY spent on her dresses
This was a cross-generational moment between a young, hip first lady and HRH the Queen of England whose Monarchy has shaped itself to be much more open and more in touch with its subjects.  This slight show of affection was spontaneous and mutual. I thought it was beautiful and as BOTH a US Citizen and a British Subject I am proud to say, GOD BLESS AMERICA, and, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!
IF WE ARE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE, THAT,S THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE. BE WARM WITH EACH OTHER WELL ONLY THEY CAN DO THAT
Gladly, the kindhearted gestures which come naturally to the American Obama's were not rebuked by Her Majesty, and even seemed accepted according to this article. The traditional formalities are wonderful and should be preserved, while being tolerant of other cultures. The world is getting smaller and with that comes change -- "call me Tony".
Its like, yor're thinking "No touching, no touching, no touching," and then when you're in the Presence, everything flies out of your head and everything becomes instinctual.  Perhaps this was a peak into who both women truly really are, good huggers.  Protocol is important, but doesnt everyone, including those who will not be touched, need a good hug everyday?
I saw "the touch" and winced, too (and may have even covered my eyes with one hand). Am much relieved to hear that Her Majesty was not at all offended but actually charmed -- and reciprocated. But really, Chris, a CLAMBAKE or BUFFALO WINGS? If anything (besides something organic and healthy), the First Lady would invite Her Majesty over for some Chicago BBQ or burgers, which I am sure the Queen would enjoy royally.
Sometimes you just make a connection with someone; Royal, non-Royal, traditions fly out the window.  They connected and were inclined to give a simple touch. NOT A BIG DEAL!  Make love, not war!!!!  Give HUGS!!  Really, its OKAY.
i found it appalling that Ms. Obama would be so arrogant to disrespect someone the the mighty Queen of England, and that great country's traditions.  Another example of ugly American arrogance.  Our representatives could certainly use a lesson in manners and pomp and circumstance.  Ms. Obama should have been strongly reprimanded, even sanctioned.
I understand. A Canadian touched me once.  It was appalling.
Who doesn't like to give a grandma a nice hug now and then?
"But please don't disrespect the traditions of another country. It's American arrogance packaged in a slicker package."
Give me a break.  Why is it when a U.S. citizen goes to any foreign country, we are expected to precisely follow their traditions, but when foreigners come to the U.S., they can totally ignore our traditions?
Ahhh - Magical Michelle.  Great First Lady.  Classy.
We know she is a very supportive wife and I'll just bet a dollar to a donought, she's a good Mom.  This country is so lucky to have her in our corner,
All this brouhaha has nothing whatsoever to do with the world economy, if trips like this ever do and ever did.  While millions of unknowns continue to starve to death and suffer in many other ways, we all have the glorious thrill of watching the Obamas have the thrill of meeting THE QUEEN!!

With that said, most Americans have an obsession with this particular Royal Family.  Spain has a King also, but you hardly ever hear about him.  This is why we have homecoming football queens and all that claptrap.

So, what's the historical background on this particular queen?  Would you be surprised to know that the current House of Windsor used to be the House of Saxe Coburg Gotha (a German House)?  However, during World War I the Brits were so mad at the Germans they forced the name change.  Before that, it was The House of Hanover which started with George I in the early 18th Century, because the Brits were upset with the "Catholicky" Stuarts, so they ended up with George I who could hardly speak English.

Oh well, our new President's dream came true - which is the dream of all of our Presidents to MEET THE QUEEN!!! It also goes to prove that nonsense is consistent and predictable.
I think its offensive that she did that, not just the touch, but the disrespect of it. and you all know that the Queen isn't going to cause a scene. what next, the new american president will try to take over England as well. and a ipod? I am sure the Queen doesn't even own a cell phone! come on  people!!
What's with all this talk about Michelle Obama touching the Queen? Is the news media trying to draw attention to the fact that the Queen has cooties? Lay off the Queen. She's old.
I was very impressed by the Obamas it shows the real love which exists in their hearts, God bless them for representing us in a very human way national and internationally.
Alas - the enemies of Barack and Michelle Obama can't find anything of substance to attack them with, so they are content to attack them mercilessly over the tiniest supposed "breaches" of protocol, though clearly nothing could be further from the truth.  Here's a statement from a Palace source:

“This was a mutual and spontaneous display of affection and appreciation between The Queen and Michelle Obama,” said a Palace spokeswoman.

WOW.  "Mutual and spontaneous diplay of affection and appreciation."  Gosh - sounds like a breach of protocol to me!!

As Shakespeare would likely have written, this is much ado about nothing.
Don H, take a nap...the IPOD represented new technology, had movies of the queen's visit to the U.S...and, she touched first...it must really upset all of you who just won't give any credit for the fact that a breath of fresh air is wiping out the decay of eight years of Dubya and that the rest of the world is enjoying stepping into the sunlight...and that the U.S. leadership is once again being respected and admired...
Please remember whereas it is a novelty or historic for America to have a black President, it is not so for Commonwealth. As a child from the Caribbean I stood in line to welcome the Queen in 84 degrees weather as she drove by and wave. She was warm and
dignify.
Remember when Princess Diana died the Queen finally
realized the beauty of giving and showing WARMTH.
At what point do all of the enamored Americans criticize the Obama's.  An IPOD!  You've got to be kidding me!  No Class!  And all of you who think that's cool obviously have no class either
This is perfectly acceptable. I am relieved that the two ladies are so comfortalbe. The Queen was totally at ease, so what do you care????? If you can do better, run for president, fix this mess our nation is in, and walk in the bubble at the same time. I know you could not do it.
Please someone don't get it so twisted.  These folks are meerly being nice to each other.  I suppose the Queen was looking forward to meeting the Obamas just  as much as the Obamas were meeting the Queen. From the pictures it seem as if they were fully engaged in a nice conversation.  Everyone looked super!!!
we was all made by the same God. He didn't make anyone any more special than the other. Touching is not off limits.
With all the things that we, (the world), have to worry about, a caring touch like this should be the last thing we should be concerned with.  I'm sure Rush Limbaugh will say it's a clear example of the socialist agenda of the evil liberals.
All of you whining about how this is "not news" ...why did you read it in the first place then?  Attention whor#s.

All of you griping about how you don't care about the Queen, that Royalty is so "19th century" (how ignorant are you?????? did you even take a history class?????), how shes no better than anyone else, yadda yadda yadda....If you don't like it then shut up and stop tearing down something you clearly don't understand...its NOT ABOUT YOU.

I'm an American and you people are an embarassment....you are so full of youselves...we as Americans are NOT the be all and end all of everythng.  Show some respect for other cultures ....its no  wonder the rest of the world looks at us like a bunch of power drunk, ignorant, spoilt children with no manners.
showing one another love is good. the queen is only human and needs to be treated so. mrs obama was being polite u peoplpe need to get over urselves uts 2009 do us all a favour and get with the times!!!!!!!!!
The Obamas are very warm people, it is so easily seen in their body language. Warmth is what is missing in this world, so one more good thing about our presidential couple.
After all, we all put our pants down, even the Queen.
