A touch too far by Michelle Obama?

LONDON – Of all the G-20 moments, it was always tipped by those of us in the know as the meeting to watch, because the unthinkable could always happen. And it did.

It wasn’t President Barack Obama talking to Prime Minister Gordon Brown about how to bail out the world’s economies. Not the nuclear discussions with those tricky Russians either.  Nor even what the Axis of Evil might get up to in London (France’s Sarkozy and Germany’s Merkel, that is!).

VIDEO: First lady touch, a royal faux pas?
No. It was a simple touch.

It came when the first lady of the United States of America met the first lady of Great Britain – Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of State of the United Kingdom and of 15 other Commonwealth realms. She is our Head of the Armed Forces, Fount of Justice and Defender of the Faith.

The queen’s been on the world stage for more than five decades; Michelle Obama for about five minutes  – but all of them quite dazzling.

Yesterday she showed Britons why.

It wasn’t only President Obama who slayed Britain with his charm. His wife was also successful, standing head and shoulders above the best.

She strode across the plush Buckingham Palace carpet to shake the queen’s hand with the kind of courteous informality that characterizes Americans. Unlike the British royals, they don’t do "stuffy." And they don’t curtsey much either.

The queen – accustomed to pomp and protocol at every step – seemed surprisingly at ease too. She took hold of Mrs. Obama’s hand firmly – not her usual end-of-fingertips, don’t-come-too-close handshake.

She gave the Obamas a signed and framed photograph of her and her husband Prince Phillip.

In return, the first couple gave her majesty an iPod. Not the most obvious gift for a monarch in her 9th decade, you might think – but then I guess they realized that those little ear-phones are just perfect when wearing a crown.

But there was more to come.

Over centuries those around the royals have drawn up a list of do’s and dont’s. Among them: Keep your hands off.

Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating was dubbed the "Lizard of Oz" by British tabloids when, in 1992, he was photographed with his arm resting on the queen’s back.  Simply not done, old chap.

President George W. Bush got a withering look in 2007 when he gave her a cheeky wink. He’s lucky she didn’t poke him in the eye.

Queen Elizabeth II gives President George W. Bush a withering look post-wink.

So I hid behind the sofa when I saw Mrs. Obama slide her arm around the queen yesterday.

But then the biggest surprise of all.

The queen returned the gesture, and placed her own arm gently on the first lady’s back.

Whatever next? You could almost hear Michelle inviting the queen to come over for a clambake. Another Buffalo wing, your majesty?

I think its great that Michelle and Her Majesty broke down barriers, even small ones like that.  Its a small outreach, but I think it says volumes.
Get a life. Much to do about nothing.
Wow!  you mean the royals are real people too?  I think it's great.  Perhaps protocol needs to be modified for the 21st century.  But then again, I'm Yank, not a Brit.  I'm meeting a colleague from London for coffee tomorrow... I'll have to see what he thinks!
Since the Queen touched Michelle Obama on the back first, then I don't see any problem with Obama returning the gesture if only for a second. Why don't you report something really important?
What more can be said ...

Michelle Obama: the absolute darling of nbc, anyway. Charm is in the eye of the beholder, and I remain totally uncharmed.
I think that we should give the Queen credit for realizing that she meets real live people that interact with her real, live person.
So, this queen of yours is so sterile and important that she can't be touched?

Please....
Is it not true that if Her Majesty reaches out to you first, you may respond in kind?
UGH, IS THERE REALLY NO MORE PRESSING NEWS TO DISCUSS? NEXT THERE WILL BE A PLAY BY PLAY OF THEIR VISITS TO THE BATHROOM...
Everyone is the same-crowns, titles, make no difference.  We all put our pants on one leg at a time!
THE FIRST LADY'S GESTURE TO THE QUEEN WAS WARM AND GENUINE- AND CLEARLY WAS WELCOMED AS SUCH. WE SHOULD ALL BE SO PROUD OF THIS STUNNING AND BRILLIANT WOMAN -
This is not news. Who cares?
Every American should be proud on how the President and Mrs. Obama have represented our nation.
Yes, she went too far. I'm not a diplomat and will never get to meet the queen, but even I know you don't touch.
I think it's great...the formality should be more relaxed!
Yes! Know your boundries! Not everyone enjoys to be touched and fawned over. You need to know your place, and your hand on her back might go over in the US, but DON'T TOUCH THE QUEEN!  We ALL know this, why did you feel you could "get away with it?" Shame!
Michelle has been a perfect lady. I was wondering when someone would try to start some sheet ... :=\
Michelle Obama is a class act!  She makes so many American's proud!
The queen is a human like everyone else, so Michelle treated her like she would treat anyone.  The Queen has lived off of the poor British people's taxes long enough.  Time to let the British keep their taxes to improve their own lives and not support the extremely wealthy lives of the royals.
What are you talking about? Elizabeth II is the Queen of Great Britain not the United States of America. We don't curtsey or bow to "royals". What is so special about her that another person, especially one who represents a nation that is vastly superior to GB, cannot touch her? Before writing this kind of drivel in the future you would be better served to remember that we got rid of British rule and the obligation to kiss her behind nearly 3oo years ago.

all other accounts i've read say the queen initiated the gesture, and michele obama reciprocated briefly. also, the queen put out a statement saying that she had no problem with this interaction. i think it's great that was charmed by our first lady!
Its Prince Phillips Gaffe here in the UK  when he met the President and his first wife that seems to have caught the headlines more than the Prsidents wife touching the Queen.
The Queen takes everything in her stride and would not have been offended. After all she has been on the throne for 57 years and realises that people are nervous at meeting her and does all she can to put them at their ease.
Good for the first lady , she should be at ease and her self . be polite but don't put on airs ,a thing that you would not do at home.
It's amateur hour at the white house.
First it was Region 1 DVD's of Jazz as a gift.
Now it's an iPod for an 80 year old.

(BTW: The British gave us a custom made wood pen set that came from the very same wood used to create the presidents desk.  Ironically it was salvaged wood from a slave ship.)

Queen Elizabeth (or any other world leader) isn't any better than any other person, so why in the world should people cower in fear around her? This is 2009, not 1509! She's not going to send anyone to the guillotine for a friendly gesture. People are way too uptight. She of course deserves respect, but the royal family takes it way too far.
Mrs. Obama is a warm, nurturing individual and I am sure the Queen felt it immediately upon meeting her.  No harm - no foul just two lovely ladies of different eras connecting.
Thats the American way of showing love, caring and respect. We love to enbrace one another by placing our amrs on you or around you. Good job First Lady.
You go First Girl
I continue to believe that when we elected Obama, we made the wisest of choices. With Michelle, we received a wonderful and unique gift.  We Americans should all be proud.
It was a faux pas, but the Queen didn't seem to take too much offense to it. Someone though really should explain to Mrs. Obama proper protocol when meeting world leaders because what is perfectly acceptable in one country is going to be considered highly inappropriate or even offensive in others.
For pity's sake, how important is this little observation?
the british need to lighten up, and remember the queen is queen because of birth, not because of her own effort or abilities. and ultimately, even the queen is destined for the grave.
"the queen" "your majesty" :
Perhaps this lack of adulation comes from "all men are created equal", a key justification for American independence from England.  As England slides into irrelevance their people should look to their former colony, who though they are undoubtedly guilty of terrible mistakes remain a guiding light to democratic leadership, for guidance in leveling the social hierarchy and ending leader-worship. You can almost hear the author whispering "British policy is make the world England".
Give it a rest.
The world is in the middle of the worst economic downturn in at least a century, children are dieing of starvation on a global scale, the disparities between the haves and the have nots are becoming daily glaringly more obvious, the chances of another major war beginning are increasing at every turn, and people who just a few months ago were hard working, taxpaying citizens are sleeping on benches in the parks around your own Whitehall, and all you care about is whether or not Mrs. Obama broke protocols when she touched Her Majesty on the back?
I don't know what world you live in, but whether or not two women exchange a touch is hardly newsworthy.
Why does Her Majesty come across as stuffy and old school?
Because you, and others like you make her that way.
If you would take the time to read a little more of the history of this remarkable, remarkable woman, you might just come to find that she's really, really very normal too.
She has to appear stuffy because there are those of you who feel she must appear to be above the rest of us.
Now follow her to Scotland sometime, and watch her on her estates there. She's one awesome lady who probably wishes the rest of you would take all that protocol and stick it where the sun don't ever shine.
Absolutely Mrs. Obama did NOT go too far with the Queen.  If you watch the video, the Queen made the first gesture and Mrs. Obama responded in kind.
non-issue...what about poverty/unemployment/gap between rich and poor?
Human kindness over pomp and circumstance! The sky is falling! What a relief!
it's about time the Queen loosened up a bit and let her hair down.  You go girl!
haha, you Brits need to lighten up! She's not a God! Buffalo wings, lol. You kill me!
I think it is another example of how down to earth and real the Obama's are..Apparenlty the Quesn felt a sense of calm and ease being around the Obama's that even she was able to let her guard down..How wonderful it is , is to Royalty just acting like plain old folk for a change..Now that is another example of REAL CHANGE you can beleive in..Go Obama's you are making me and our country so very proud..

Why does kathy Lee Gifford think Michelle Obama should have curtised to the queen? Americans do not bow to foreign royalty. We fought a war so we wouldn't have to do that.  Sincerely

It's amazing how many people seem to forget that every member of the G20 is a human being -- nothing more. Reliable sources tell me that Queen Elizabeth II eats, sleeps, and defecates just like the rest of us. Was it a faux pas for Michelle Obama to put her arm around the queen? Absolutely not! The only faux pas would've been if the queen (or anyone else) thought she was somehow "above" such a gesture.
Check out the photo in the London Times from today.  The Queen also has her arm around Michelle Obama.  The Palace said absolutely nothing about this supposed breach today.  Some say, the Palace is definitely lightening up about such utter nonsense
I saw it on television, and the moment between the Queen and the First Lady was quite lovely. It was a rare, generational moment and mutual likeability and understanding.
I understand the protocal and prodecures, but I think with age you understand to ease up a little. Regardless, if your the Queen or not, older people like someone making a little fuss over them, and Michelle caring nature came through and the Queen like it. Remember to hug your grandmother and grandfather today folks. :^)
It is about time someone treated the Queen like a human being.  She probably needs a hug now and then just like the rest of us.  Michelle Obama is effortlessly graceful, and represents America well.
We all watched enthralled to see how the "tea at Buckingham Palace" would go.  Michelle Obama is truly America's "Queen"!
that great  gold bless the queen and michelle
Who cares, royalty is so 19th century. The "Queen" is no more important to me then the guy who picks up my garbage. Thats the true American spirit.
